ROBOPOL: Social Robotics Meets Vehicular Communications for Cooperative Automated Driving

On the way toward full autonomy, sharing roads between automated and autonomous vehicles in so-called mixed traffic is unavoidable. Moreover, even if all vehicles on the road were autonomous, pedestrians would still cross streets. We propose social robots as moderators between autonomous vehicles and vulnerable road users. This paper presents a first proof-of-concept integration of a social robot advising pedestrians in crossing scenarios involving a cooperative automated vehicle. We also discuss key enablers required for designing "robot policeman" in a generic use case of cooperative intersection management. Our work provides a vision of the role of social robotics in future Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems.

Some reflected autoregressive processes with dependencies

Motivated by queueing applications, we study various reflected autoregressive processes with dependencies. Amongst others, we study cases where the interarrival and service times are proportionally dependent with additive and/or subtracting delay, as well as cases cases where interarrival times depends on whether the service duration of the previous arrival exceeds or not a random threshold. Moreover, we study cases where the autoregressive parameter is constant as well as a discrete or a continuous random variable, as well as cases where . More general dependence structures are also discussed. Our primary aim is to investigate a broad class of recursions of autoregressive type for which several independence assumptions are lifted, and for which a detailed exact analysis is provided. We provide expressions for the Laplace transform of the waiting time of a customer in the system in terms of an infinite product of known Laplace transforms. An integer-valued reflected autoregressive process that can be used to model a novel retrial queueing system with orbital searching time to depend on whether the last busy period starts with an empty or a non empty orbit queue, is also discussed. For such a model the probability generating function of the stationary orbit queue length is given as an infinite product of known generating functions. A first attempt towards multidimensional setting is also analyzed. Some additional generalizations with more general dependence structure are also discussed.

Networks of infinite-server queues with multiplicative transitions

This paper considers a network of infinite-server queues with the special feature that, triggered by specific events, the network population vector may undergo a linear transformation (a `multiplicative transition'). For this model we characterize the joint probability generating function in terms of a system of partial differential equations; this system enables the evaluation of (transient as well as stationary) moments. We show that several relevant systems fit in the framework developed, such as networks of retrial queues, networks in which jobs can be rerouted when links fail, and storage systems. Numerical examples illustrate how our results can be used to support design problems.

Information dissemination processes in directed social networks

Social networks can have asymmetric relationships. In the online social network Twitter, a follower receives tweets from a followed person but the followed person is not obliged to subscribe to the channel of the follower. Thus, it is natural to consider the dissemination of information in directed networks. In this work we use the mean-field approach to derive differential equations that describe the dissemination of information in a social network with asymmetric relationships. In particular, our model reflects the impact of the degree distribution on the information propagation process. We further show that for an important subclass of our model, the differential equations can be solved analytically.
