Machine Learning for Building Energy and Indoor Environment: A Perspective

Machine learning is a promising technique for many practical applications. In this perspective, we illustrate the development and application for machine learning. It is indicated that the theories and applications of machine learning method in the field of energy conservation and indoor environment are not mature, due to the difficulty of the determination for model structure with better prediction. In order to significantly contribute to the problems, we utilize the ANN model to predict the indoor culturable fungi concentration, which achieves the better accuracy and convenience. The proposal of hybrid method is further expand the application fields of machine learning method. Further, ANN model based on HTS was successfully applied for the optimization of building energy system. We hope that this novel method could capture more attention from investigators via our introduction and perspective, due to its potential development with accuracy and reliability. However, its feasibility in other fields needs to be promoted further.

Learning-Based Computation Offloading for IoT Devices with Energy Harvesting

Internet of Things (IoT) devices can apply mobile-edge computing (MEC) and energy harvesting (EH) to provide the satisfactory quality of experiences for computation intensive applications and prolong the battery lifetime. In this article, we investigate the computation offloading for IoT devices with energy harvesting in wireless networks with multiple MEC devices such as base stations and access points, each with different computation resource and radio communication capability. We propose a reinforcement learning based computation offloading framework for an IoT device to choose the MEC device and determine the offloading rate according to the current battery level, the previous radio bandwidth to each MEC device and the predicted amount of the harvested energy. A "hotbooting" Q-learning based computation offloading scheme is proposed for an IoT device to achieve the optimal offloading performance without being aware of the MEC model, the energy consumption and computation latency model. We also propose a fast deep Q-network (DQN) based offloading scheme, which combines the deep learning and hotbooting techniques to accelerate the learning speed of Q-learning. We show that the proposed schemes can achieve the optimal offloading policy after sufficiently long learning time and provide their performance bounds under two typical MEC scenarios. Simulations are performed for IoT devices that use wireless power transfer to capture the ambient radio-frequency signals to charge the IoT batteries. Simulation results show that the fast DQN-based offloading scheme reduces the energy consumption, decreases the computation delay and the task drop ratio, and increases the utility of the IoT device in dynamic MEC, compared with the benchmark Q-learning based offloading.

Cauchy problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with an external force

In this paper we focus on the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a rough external force. If the given rough external force is small, we prove the local-in-time existence of this system for any initial data belonging to the critical Besov space $\dot{B}_{p,p}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}$, where $3<p<\infty$. Moreover, We show the long-time behavior of the priori global solutins constructed by us. Also, we give three kinds of uniqueness results of the forced Navier-Stokes equations.

Observation of spin-orbit magnetoresistance in metallic thin films on magnetic insulators

A magnetoresistance effect induced by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction was predicted, but not yet observed, in bilayers consisting of normal metal and ferromagnetic insulator. Here, we present an experimental observation of this new type of spin-orbit magnetoresistance (SOMR) effect in a bilayer structure Cu[Pt]/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG), where the Cu/YIG interface is decorated with nanosize Pt islands. This new MR is apparently not caused by the bulk spin-orbit interaction because of the negligible spin-orbit interaction in Cu and the discontinuity of the Pt islands. This SOMR disappears when the Pt islands are absent or located away from the Cu/YIG interface, therefore we can unambiguously ascribe it to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction at the interface enhanced by the Pt decoration. The numerical Boltzmann simulations are consistent with the experimental SOMR results in the angular dependence of magnetic field and the Cu thickness dependence. Our finding demonstrates the realization of the spin manipulation by interface engineering.

Tailoring Semiconductor Lateral Multi-junctions for Giant Photoconductivity Enhancement

Semiconductor heterostructures have played a critical role as the enabler for new science and technology. The emergence of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) as atomically thin semiconductors has opened new frontiers in semiconductor heterostructures either by stacking different TMDs to form vertical heterojunctions or by stitching them laterally to form lateral heterojunctions via direct growth. In conventional semiconductor heterostructures, the design of multi-junctions is critical to achieve carrier confinement. Analogously, we report successful synthesis of monolayer WS2/WS2(1-x)Se2x/WS2 multi-junction lateral heterostructure via direct growth by chemical vapor deposition. The grown structures are characterized by Raman, photoluminescence, and annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy to determine its lateral compositional profile. More importantly, using microwave impedance microscopy, we demonstrate that the local photoconductivity in the alloy region can be tailored and enhanced by 2 orders of magnitude over pure WS2. Finite element analysis confirms that this effect is due to the carrier diffusion and confinement into the alloy region. Our work exemplifies the technological potential of atomically thin lateral heterostructures in optoelectronic applications.

Sorting with GPUs: A Survey

Sorting is a fundamental operation in computer science and is a bottleneck in many important fields. Sorting is critical to database applications, online search and indexing, biomedical computing, and many other applications. The explosive growth in computational power and availability of GPU coprocessors has allowed sort operations on GPUs to be done much faster than any equivalently priced CPU. Current trends in GPU computing shows that this explosive growth in GPU capabilities is likely to continue for some time. As such, there is a need to develop algorithms to effectively harness the power of GPUs for crucial applications such as sorting.

Out-of-plane Piezoelectricity and Ferroelectricity in Layered $α$-In2Se3 Nano-flakes

Piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties in the two dimensional (2D) limit are highly desired for nanoelectronic, electromechanical, and optoelectronic applications. Here we report the first experimental evidence of out-of-plane piezoelectricity and ferroelectricity in van der Waals layered $α$-In2Se3 nano-flakes. The non-centrosymmetric R3m symmetry of the $α$-In2Se3 samples is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation, and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Domains with opposite polarizations are visualized by piezo-response force microscopy. Single-point poling experiments suggest that the polarization is potentially switchable for $α$-In2Se3 nano-flakes with thicknesses down to ~ 10 nm. The piezotronic effect is demonstrated in two-terminal devices, where the Schottky barrier can be modulated by the strain-induced piezopotential. Our work on polar $α$-In2Se3, one of the model 2D piezoelectrics and ferroelectrics with simple crystal structures, shows its great potential in electronic and photonic applications.

A Bayesian Risk Approach to Data-driven Stochastic Optimization: Formulations and Asymptotics

A large class of stochastic programs involve optimizing an expectation taken with respect to an underlying distribution that is unknown in practice. One popular approach to addressing the distributional uncertainty, known as the distributionally robust optimization (DRO), is to hedge against the worst case over an uncertainty set of candidate distributions. However, it has been observed that inappropriate construction of the uncertainty set can sometimes result in over-conservative solutions. To explore the middle ground between optimistically ignoring the distributional uncertainty and pessimistically fixating on the worst-case scenario, we propose a Bayesian risk optimization (BRO) framework for parametric underlying distributions, which is to optimize a risk functional applied to the posterior distribution of an unknown distribution parameter. Of our particular interest are four risk functionals: mean, mean-variance, value-at-risk, and conditional value-at-risk. To unravel the implication of BRO, we establish the consistency of objective functions and optimal solutions, as well as the asymptotic normality of objective functions and optimal values. More importantly, our analysis reveals a hidden interpretation: the objectives of BRO can be approximately viewed as a weighted sum of posterior mean objective and the (squared) half-width of the true objective's confidence interval.

Kernalised Multi-resolution Convnet for Visual Tracking

Visual tracking is intrinsically a temporal problem. Discriminative Correlation Filters (DCF) have demonstrated excellent performance for high-speed generic visual object tracking. Built upon their seminal work, there has been a plethora of recent improvements relying on convolutional neural network (CNN) pretrained on ImageNet as a feature extractor for visual tracking. However, most of their works relying on ad hoc analysis to design the weights for different layers either using boosting or hedging techniques as an ensemble tracker. In this paper, we go beyond the conventional DCF framework and propose a Kernalised Multi-resolution Convnet (KMC) formulation that utilises hierarchical response maps to directly output the target movement. When directly deployed the learnt network to predict the unseen challenging UAV tracking dataset without any weight adjustment, the proposed model consistently achieves excellent tracking performance. Moreover, the transfered multi-reslution CNN renders it possible to be integrated into the RNN temporal learning framework, therefore opening the door on the end-to-end temporal deep learning (TDL) for visual tracking.

A Survey on Monochromatic Connections of Graphs

The concept of monochromatic connection of graphs was introduced by Caro and Yuster in 2011. Recently, a lot of results have been published about it. In this survey, we attempt to bring together all the results that dealt with it. We begin with an introduction, and then classify the results into the following categories: monochromatic connection coloring of edge-version, monochromatic connection coloring of vertex-version, monochromatic index, monochromatic connection coloring of total-version.

Exploiting Massive D2D Collaboration for Energy-Efficient Mobile Edge Computing

In this article we propose a novel Device-to-Device (D2D) Crowd framework for 5G mobile edge computing, where a massive crowd of devices at the network edge leverage the network-assisted D2D collaboration for computation and communication resource sharing among each other. A key objective of this framework is to achieve energy-efficient collaborative task executions at network-edge for mobile users. Specifically, we first introduce the D2D Crowd system model in details, and then formulate the energy-efficient D2D Crowd task assignment problem by taking into account the necessary constraints. We next propose a graph matching based optimal task assignment policy, and further evaluate its performance through extensive numerical study, which shows a superior performance of more than 50% energy consumption reduction over the case of local task executions. Finally, we also discuss the directions of extending the D2D Crowd framework by taking into variety of application factors.

Hierarchical Control Framework for Integrated Coordination between DERs and Demand Response

Demand response represents a significant but largely untapped resource that can greatly enhance the flexibility and reliability of power systems. This paper proposes a hierarchical control framework to facilitate the integrated coordination between distributed energy resources and demand response. The proposed framework consists of coordination and device layers. In the coordination layer, various resource aggregations are optimally coordinated in a distributed manner to achieve the system-level objectives. In the device layer, individual resources are controlled in real time to follow the optimal power dispatch signals received from the coordination layer. For practical applications, a method is presented to determine the utility functions of controllable loads by accounting for the real-time load dynamics and the preferences of individual customers. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is validated by detailed simulation studies.

Interfacial Control of Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction in Heavy Metal_Ferromagnetic Metal Thin Film Heterostructures

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (DMI) in ultrathin magnetic thin film heterostructures provides a new approach for controlling spin textures on mesoscopic length scales. Here we investigate the dependence of the interfacial DMI constant D on a Pt wedge insertion layer in Ta_CoFeB_Pt(wedge)_MgO thin films by observing the asymmetric spin wave dispersion using Brillouin light scattering. Continuous tuning of D by more than a factor of three is realized by inserting less than one monolayer of Pt. The observations provide new insights for designing magnetic thin film heterostructures with tailored D for controlling skyrmions and magnetic domain wall chirality and dynamics.

New forms and thermodynamics of the neutral rotating squashed black hole in five-dimensional vacuum Einstein gravity theory

We initiated the program to look for new and simple forms for the five-dimensional rotating squashed black holes by solving directly the equation of motion. In a recent paper, the metric ansatz of dimensional reduction along the fifth spatial dimension was used to obtain a new but rather simple form for the five-dimensional rotating uncharged black hole solution with squashed horizons via solving the vacuum Einstein field equations. In this work, we continue to seek for another new but relatively simple form for the neutral rotating squashed black hole solution by using a different metric ansatz of time-like dimensional reduction. We then find its relation to our previous solution and investigate its thermodynamics by means of the counterterm method. Compared with the previous results given by the other author, both of our new metric forms and their associated thermodynamic expressions are very concise and elegant. Both of two new forms for the neutral rotating squashed black hole solution presented in this paper can be used as the seed to generate its charged generalization in D=5 minimal supergravity.

Impact of Grain Boundaries on Efficiency and Stability of Organic-Inorganic Trihalide Perovskites

Organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells have attracted tremendous attention because of their remarkably high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). To further improve the device performance, however, it is imperative to obtain fundamental understandings on the photo-response and long-term stability down to the microscopic level. Here, we report the first quantitative nanoscale photoconductivity imaging on two methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI3) thin films with different PCEs by light-stimulated microwave impedance microscopy. The intrinsic photo-response is largely uniform across grains and grain boundaries, which is direct evidence on the inherently benign nature of microstructures in the perovskite thin films. In contrast, the carrier mobility and lifetime are strongly affected by bulk properties such as the sample crystallinity. As visualized by the spatial evolution of local photoconductivity, the degradation due to water diffusion through the capping layer begins with the disintegration of large grains rather than the nucleation and propagation from grain boundaries. Our findings provide new insights to improve the electro-optical properties of MAPbI3 thin films towards large-scale commercialization.

Uncovering edge states and electrical inhomogeneity in MoS2 field-effect transistors

The understanding of various types of disorders in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), including dangling bonds at the edges, chalcogen deficiencies in the bulk, and charges in the substrate, is of fundamental importance for their applications in electronics and photonics. Because of the imperfections, electrons moving on these two-dimensional (2D) crystals experience a spatially non-uniform Coulomb environment, whose effect on the charge transport has not been microscopically studied. Here, we report the mesoscopic conductance mapping in monolayer and few-layer MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) by microwave impedance microscopy (MIM). The spatial evolution of the insulator-to-metal transition is clearly resolved. Interestingly, as the transistors are gradually turned on, electrical conduction emerges initially at the edges before appearing in the bulk of MoS2 flakes, which can be explained by our first-principles calculations. The results unambiguously confirm that the contribution of edge states to the channel conductance is significant under the threshold voltage but negligible once the bulk of the TMD device becomes conductive. Strong conductance inhomogeneity, which is associated with the fluctuations of disorder potential in the 2D sheets, is also observed in the MIM images, providing a guideline for future improvement of the device performance.

Large-area and high-quality 2D transition metal telluride

Atomically thin transitional metal ditellurides like WTe2 and MoTe2 have triggered tremendous research interests because of their intrinsic nontrivial band structure. They are also predicted to be 2D topological insulators and type-II Weyl semimetals. However, most of the studies on ditelluride atomic layers so far rely on the low-yield and time-consuming mechanical exfoliation method. Direct synthesis of large-scale monolayer ditellurides has not yet been achieved. Here, using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, we demonstrate controlled synthesis of high-quality and atom-thin tellurides with lateral size over 300 μm. We found that the as-grown WTe2 maintains two different stacking sequences in the bilayer, where the atomic structure of the stacking boundary is revealed by scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). The low-temperature transport measurements revealed a novel semimetal-to-insulator transition in WTe2 layers and an enhanced superconductivity in few-layer MoTe2. This work paves the way to the synthesis of atom-thin tellurides and also quantum spin Hall devices.
