Bar cohomology of links: beyond Milnor invariants

We develop bar cohomology of link complements as an invariant of links in homology spheres. In this setting, bar cohomology is a Hopf algebra which is calculable using surfaces and their intersection curves in a link complement. In this first in a sequence of works, we introduce the invariant and show that it defines a canonical subspace of the tensor Hopf algebra, which already encodes information about Milnor's link invariants and provides geometrically significant information beyond them.

The transverse singular complex

Let $M$ be a smooth manifold without boundary and let $\mathcal{T}$ be a countable collection of manifolds with corners, each equipped with a smooth map to $M$. We show that the singular simplicial set $\mathrm{Sing}(M)$ of $M$ deformation retracts onto the simplicial subset $\mathrm{Sing}^{\mathcal{T}}\!(M)$ of smooth singular simplices that are transverse to every element of $\mathcal{T}$.

Infinitesimal calculations in fundamental groups

We show that Hopf invariants, defined by evaluation in Harrison cohomology of the commutative cochains of a space, calculate the logarithm map from a fundamental group to its Malcev Lie algebra. They thus present the zeroth Harrison cohomology as a universal dual object to the Malcev Lie algebra. This structural theorem supports explicit calculations in algebraic topology, geometric topology, and combinatorial group theory. In particular, we give the first algorithm to determine whether a power of a word is a k-fold nested commutator while encoding commutator structure in any group presented by generators and relations.

Foundations of geometric cohomology: from co-orientations to product structures

This manuscript develops a geometric approach to ordinary cohomology of smooth manifolds, constructing a cochain complex model based on co-oriented smooth maps from manifolds with corners. Special attention is given to the pull-back product of such smooth maps, which provides our geometric cochains with a partially defined product structure inducing the cup product in cohomology. A parallel treatment of homology is also given allowing for a geometric unification of the contravariant and covariant theories.

Flowing from intersection product to cup product

We use a vector field flow defined through a cubulation of a closed manifold to reconcile the partially defined commutative product on geometric cochains with the standard cup product on cubical cochains, which is fully defined and commutative only up to coherent homotopies. The interplay between intersection and cup product dates back to the beginnings of homology theory, but, to our knowledge, this result is the first to give an explicit cochain level comparison between these approaches.

Linear discriminant initialization for feed-forward neural networks

Informed by the basic geometry underlying feed forward neural networks, we initialize the weights of the first layer of a neural network using the linear discriminants which best distinguish individual classes. Networks initialized in this way take fewer training steps to reach the same level of training, and asymptotically have higher accuracy on training data.

Linking of letters and the lower central series of free groups

We develop invariants of the lower central series of free groups through linking of letters, showing they span the rational linear dual of the lower central series subquotients. We build on an approach to Lie coalgebras through operads, setting the stage for generalization to the lower central series Lie algebra of any group. Our approach yields a new co-basis for free Lie algebras. We compare with the classical approach of Fox derivatives. v2: substantial refinement of exposition

Evidence-based teaching: how do we all get there?

There are compelling reasons to shift our pedagogy toward evidence-based active learning methods that substantially improve student success, and now plenty of resources to aid in that shift. These include the recent CBMS Statement on Active Learning, MAA Instructional Practices Guide (IPG), and MIT Electronic Seminar on Mathematics Education. But implementation is neither quick nor easy. There are still plenty of individual, institutional, cultural, and professional obstacles, along with wonderful opportunities. At the 2019 Joint Mathematics Meetings we co-organized a guided discussion -- an ``un-panel'' -- sponsored by the American Mathematical Society's Committee on Education in order to stimulate the process of our community moving toward active learning in our teaching pedagogy. Seventy participants with fifteen discussion leaders expanded an initial list of issues, and considered questions around both challenges and opportunities. Here we summarize from these discussions, suggesting areas for collaborative efforts ranging from local colleagues and educational institutions to national and global professional societies.

Mod-two cohomology rings of alternating groups

We calculate the mod-two cohomology of all alternating groups together, with both cup and transfer product structures, which in particular determines the additive structure and ring structure of the cohomology of individual groups. We show that there are no nilpotent elements in the cohomology rings of individual alternating groups. We calculate the action of the Steenrod algebra and discuss individual component rings. A range of techniques is needed: an almost Hopf ring structure associated to the embeddings of products of alternating groups, the Gysin sequence relating the cohomology of alternating groups to that of symmetric groups, Fox-Neuwirth resolutions, and restriction to elementary abelian subgroups.

Embedding calculus knot invariants are of finite type

We show that the map on components from the space of classical long knots to the n-th stage of its Goodwillie-Weiss embedding calculus tower is a map of monoids whose target is an abelian group and which is invariant under clasper surgery. We deduce that this map on components is a finite type-(n-1) knot invariant. We also compute the second page in total degree zero for the spectral sequence converging to the components of this tower as Z-modules of primitive chord diagrams, providing evidence for the conjecture that the tower is a universal finite-type invariant over the integers. Key to these results is the development of a group structure on the tower compatible with connect-sum of knots, which in contrast with the corresponding results for the (weaker) homology tower requires novel techniques involving operad actions, evaluation maps, and cosimplicial and subcubical diagrams.

Fox-Neuwirth cell structures and the cohomology of symmetric groups

We use the Fox-Neuwirth cell structure for one-point compactifications of configuration spaces as the starting point for understanding our recent calculation of the mod-two cohomology of symmetric groups. We then use that calculation to give short proofs of classical results on this cohomology due to Nakaoka and to Madsen. v2. Added references, expanded exposition on the cochain model and a mathematical correction in the final section. v3. Added references.

Koszul duality in algebraic topology - an historical perspective

We survey the topology which led to the original bar and cobar constructions, for both associative algebras and coalgebras and for Lie algebras and commutative coalgebras. These constructions are often viewed as part of the larger theory of Koszul duality of operads, so this survey is meant to offer an historical perspective on the most prominent cases of that theory. We also explain recent work which shows that Hopf/linking invariants for homotopy are at the heart of the duality between commutative algebras and Lie coalgebras.

Mod-two cohomology of symmetric groups as a Hopf ring

We compute the mod-2 cohomology of the collection of all symmetric groups as a Hopf ring, where the second product is the transfer product of Strickland and Turner. We first give examples of related Hopf rings from invariant theory and representation theory. In addition to a Hopf ring presentation, we give geometric cocycle representatives and explicitly determine the structure as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra. All calculations are explicit, with an additive basis which has a clean graphical representation. We also briefly develop related Hopf ring structures on rings of symmetric invariants and end with a generating set consisting of Stiefel-Whitney classes of regular representations v2. Added new results on varieties which represent the cocycles, a graphical representation of the additive basis, and on the Steenrod algebra action. v3. Included a full treatment of invariant theoretic Hopf rings, refined the definition of representing varieties, and corrected and clarified references.

Lie coalgebras and rational homotopy theory, I: Graph coalgebras

We develop a new, intrinsic, computationally friendly approach to Lie coalgebras through graph coalgebras, which are new and likely to be of independent interest. Our graph coalgebraic approach has advantages both in finding relations between coalgebra elements and in having explicit models for linear dualities. As a result, proofs in the realm of Lie coalgebras are often simpler to give through graph coalgebras than through classical methods, and for some important statements we have only found proofs in the graph coalgebra setting. For applications, we investigate the word problem for Lie coalgebras, we revisit Harrison homology, and we unify the two standard Quillen functors between differential graded commutative algebras and Lie coalgebras.

Lie coalgebras and rational homotopy theory II: Hopf invariants

We give a new solution of the "homotopy periods" problem, as highlighted by Sullivan, which places explicit geometrically meaningful formulae first dating back to Whitehead in the context of Quillen's formalism for rational homotopy theory and Koszul-Moore duality. Geometrically, we show that homotopy groups are rationally given by "generalized linking/intersection invariants" of cochain data. Moreover, we give a method for determining when two maps from $S^n$ to $X$ are homotopic after allowing for multiplication by some integer. For applications, we investigate wedges of spheres and homogeneous spaces (where homotopy is given by classical linking numbers), and configuration spaces (where homotopy is given by generalized linking numbers); also we propose a generalization of the Hopf invariant one question.

Operads and knot spaces

We show that the Kontsevich operad, as an operad with multiplication, provides a model for the Taylor tower of the functor defined by taking the homotopy fiber of the inclusion of embeddings of an interval in a cube to the corresponding space of immersions. In developing the Kontsevich operad, we find an operad structure on the simplicial model for the two-sphere, in the opposite category to finite sets. Applications of our result include using machinery of McClure-Smith to produce a little two-disk action on our knot spaces.

The homology of the little disks operad

In this expository paper we give an elementary, hands-on computation of the homology of the little disks operad, showing that the homology of a $d-fold loop space is a Poisson algebra. One aim is to familiarize a greater audience with Euclidean configuration spaces, using tools accessible to second-year graduate students. We also give a brief introduction to the theory of operads. New results include identifying the pairing between homology and cohomology of these spaces as a pairing of graphs and trees, and treating the cooperad structure on cohomology.

Manifold theoretic compactifications of configuration spaces

We present new definitions for and give a comprehensive treatment of the canonical compactification of configuration spaces due to Fulton-MacPherson and Axelrod-Singer in the setting of smooth manifolds, as well as a simplicial variant of this compactification initiated by Kontsevich. Our constructions are elementary and give simple global coordinates for the compactified configuration space of a general manifold embedded in Euclidean space. We stratify the canonical compactification, identifying the diffeomorphism types of the strata in terms of spaces of configurations in the tangent bundle, and give completely explicit local coordinates around the strata as needed to define a manifold with corners. We analyze the quotient map from the canonical to the simplicial compactification, showing it is a homotopy equivalence. We define projection maps and diagonal maps, which for the simplicial variant satisfy cosimplicial identities.
