Index theory for improper actions: localization at units

We pursue the study of local index theory for operators of Fourier-integral type associated to non-proper and non-isometric actions of Lie groupoids, initiated in a previous work. We introduce the notion of geometric cocycles for Lie groupoids, which allow to represent fairly general cyclic cohomology classes of the convolution algebra of Lie groupoids localized at isotropic submanifolds. Then we compute the image of geometric cocycles localized at units under the excision map of the fundamental pseudodifferential extension. As an illustrative example, we prove an equivariant longitudinal index theorem for a codimension one foliation endowed with a transverse action of the group of real numbers.

An equivariant index theorem for hypoelliptic operators

Let M be a foliated manifold and G a discrete group acting on M by diffeomorphisms mapping leaves to leaves. Then G naturally acts by automorphisms on the algebra of Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators on the foliation. Our main result is an index theorem for hypoelliptic-type operators which belong to the crossed product of the Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators with the group G. As a corollary, we get a solution to Connes-Moscovici's transverse problem in arbitrary codimensions, by exhibiting an explicit formula in terms of characteristic classes of equivariant vector bundles over M, for the Chern-Connes character associated to their hypoelliptic signature operator.

Local index theory for certain Fourier integral operators on Lie groupoids

We develop a local index theory for Fourier-integral operators associated to non-proper and non-isometric actions of Lie groupoids on smooth submersions. To such action is associated a short exact sequence of algebras, relating genuine Fourier-integral operators to their non-commutative symbol. We then compute the connecting map induced by this extension on periodic cyclic cohomology. When cyclic cohomology is localized at appropriate isotropic submanifolds of the groupoid in question, we find that the connecting map is expressed in terms of an explicit Wodzicki-type residue formula, which involves the jets of non-commutative symbols at the fixed-point set of the action.

Pseudodifferential extension and Todd class

Let M be a closed manifold. Wodzicki shows that, in the stable range, the cyclic cohomology of the associative algebra of pseudodifferential symbols of order \leq 0 is isomorphic to the homology of the cosphere bundle of M. In this article we develop a formalism which allows to calculate that, under this isomorphism, the Radul cocycle corresponds to the Poincar\'e dual of the Todd class. As an immediate corollary we obtain a purely algebraic proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic pseudodifferential operators on closed manifolds.

Extensions and renormalized traces

It has been shown by Nistor that given any extension of associative algebras over C, the connecting morphism in periodic cyclic homology is compatible, under the Chern-Connes character, with the index morphism in lower algebraic K-theory. The proof relies on the abstract properties of cyclic theory, essentially excision, which does not provide explicit formulas a priori. Avoiding the use of excision, we explain in this article how to get explicit formulas in a wide range of situations. The method is connected to the renormalization procedure introduced in our previous work on the bivariant Chern character for quasihomomorphisms, leading to "local" index formulas in the sense of non-commutative geometry. We illustrate these principles with the example of the classical family index theorem: we find that the characteristic numbers of the index bundle associated to a family of elliptic pseudodifferential operators are expressed in terms of the (fiberwise) Wodzicki residue.

Localization over complex-analytic groupoids and conformal renormalization

We present a higher index theorem for a certain class of etale one-dimensional complex-analytic groupoids. The novelty is the use of the local anomaly formula established in a previous paper, which represents the bivariant Chern character of a quasihomomorphism as the chiral anomaly associated to a renormalized non-commutative chiral field theory. In the present situation the geometry is non-metric and the corresponding field theory can be renormalized in a purely conformal way, by exploiting the complex-analytic structure of the groupoid only. The index formula is automatically localized at the automorphism subset of the groupoid and involves a cap-product with the sum of two different cyclic cocycles over the groupoid algebra. The first cocycle is a trace involving a generalization of the Lefschetz numbers to higher-order fixed points. The second cocycle is a non-commutative Todd class, constructed from the modular automorphism group of the algebra.

The equivariant index theorem in entire cyclic cohomology

Let G be a locally compact group acting smoothly and properly by isometries on a complete Riemannian manifold M, with compact quotient. There is an assembly map which associates to any G-equivariant K-homology class on M, an element of the topological K-theory of a suitable Banach completion B of the convolution algebra of continuous compactly supported functions on G. The aim of this paper is to calculate the composition of the assembly map with the Chern character in the entire cyclic homology of B. We prove an index theorem reducing this computation to a cup-product in bivariant entire cyclic cohomology. As a consequence we obtain an explicit localization formula which includes, as particular cases, the equivariant Atiyah-Segal-Singer index theorem when G is compact, and the Connes-Moscovici index theorem for G-coverings when G is discrete. The proof is based on the bivariant Chern character introduced in previous papers.

Secondary invariants for Frechet algebras and quasihomomorphisms

A Frechet algebra endowed with a multiplicatively convex topology has two types of invariants: homotopy invariants (topological K-theory and periodic cyclic homology) and secondary invariants (multiplicative K-theory and the non-periodic versions of cyclic homology). The aim of this paper is to establish a Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem relating direct images for homotopy and secondary invariants of Frechet m-algebras under finitely summable quasihomomorphisms.

Quasihomomorphisms and the residue Chern character

We develop a general procedure, based on the renormalized eta-cochain, which allows to find local representatives of the bivariant Chern character of finitely summable quasihomomorphisms. In particular, using zeta-function renormalization we obtain a bivariant generalization of the Connes-Moscovici residue formula, and explain the link with chiral and multiplicative anomalies in quantum field theory.

Anomalies and noncommutative index theory

These are the notes of a lecture given during the summer school "Geometric and Topological Methods for Quantum Field Theory", Villa de Leyva, Colombia, july 11 - 29, 2005. We review basic facts concerning gauge anomalies and discuss the link with the Connes-Moscovici index formula in noncommutative geometry.

Retraction of the bivariant Chern character

We show that the bivariant Chern character in entire cyclic cohomology constructed in a previous paper in terms of superconnections and heat kernel regularization, retracts on periodic cocycles under some finite summability conditions. The trick is a bivariant generalization of the Connes-Moscovici method for finitely summable K-cycles. This yields concrete formulas for the Chern character of p-summable quasihomomorphisms and invertible extensions, analogous to those of Nistor. The latter formulation is completely algebraic and based on the universal extensions of Cuntz and Zekri naturally appearing in the description of bivariant K-theory.

A bivariant Chern character for families of spectral triples

In this paper we construct a bivariant Chern character defined on ``families of spectral triples''. Such families should be viewed as a version of unbounded Kasparov bimodules adapted to the category of bornological algebras. The Chern character then takes its values in the bivariant entire cyclic cohomology of Meyer. The basic idea is to work within Quillen's algebra cochains formalism, and construct the Chern character from the exponential of the curvature of a superconnection, leading to a heat kernel regularization of traces. The obtained formula is a bivariant generalization of the JLO cocycle.

Chern character, Hopf algebras, and BRS cohomology

We present the construction of a Chern character in cyclic cohomology, involving an arbitrary number of associative algebras in contravariant or covariant position. This is a generalization of the bivariant Chern character for bornological algebras introduced in a previous paper, based on Quillen superconnections and heat-kernel regularization. Then we adapt the formalism to the cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras in the sense of Connes-Moscovici. This yields a Chern character for ``equivariant K-cycles'' over a bornological algebra A, generalizing the Connes-Moscovici characteristic maps. In the case of equivariant spectral triples verifying some additional conditions, we also exhibit secondary characteristic classes. The latter are not related to topology but rather define characteristic maps for the higher algebraic K-theory of A. In the classical case of spin manifolds, we compute and interpret these secondary classes in terms of BRS cohomology in Quantum Field Theory.

A Riemann-Roch Theorem For One-Dimensional Complex Groupoids

We consider a smooth groupoid of the form Σ\rtimesΓwhere Σis a Riemann surface and Γa discrete pseudogroup acting on Σby local conformal diffeomorphisms. After defining a K-cycle on the crossed product C_0(Σ)\rtimesΓgeneralising the classical Dolbeault complex, we compute its Chern character in cyclic cohomology, using the index theorem of Connes and Moscovici. This involves in particular a generalisation of the Euler class constructed from the modular automorphism group of the von Neumann algebra L^{\infty}(Σ)\rtimesΓ.

On the Topological Interpretation of Gravitational Anomalies

We consider the mixed gravitational-Yang-Mills anomaly as the coupling between the $K$-theory and $K$-homology of a $C^*$-algebra crossed product. The index theorem of Connes-Moscovici allows to compute the Chern character of the $K$-cycle by local formulae involving connections and curvatures. It gives a topological interpretation to the anomaly, in the sense of noncommutative algebras.
