Torelli loci, product cycles, and the homomorphism conjecture for $\mathcal{A}_g$

The tautological $\mathbb{Q}$-subalgebra $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{A}_g) \subset \mathsf{CH}^*(\mathcal{A}_g)$ of the Chow ring of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties is generated by the Chern classes of the Hodge bundle. There is a canonical $\mathbb{Q}$-linear projection operator $\mathsf{taut}: \mathsf{CH}^*(\mathcal{A}_g) \rightarrow \mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{A}_g).$ We present here new calculations of intersection products of the Torelli locus in $\mathcal{A}_g$ with the product loci $\mathcal{A}_{r}\times \mathcal{A}_{g-r} \rightarrow \mathcal{A}_g$ for $r\leq 3$. The results suggest that $\mathsf{taut}$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra homomorphism, at least for special cycles. We discuss a conjectural framework for this homomorphism property. Our calculations follow two independent approaches. The first is a direct study of the excess intersection geometry of the fiber product of the Torelli and product morphisms. The second recasts the geometry in terms of families Gromov-Witten classes, which are computed by a wall-crossing formula related to unramified maps. We define tautological projections of cycles on the fiber products $\mathcal X_g^s \to \mathcal A_g$ of the universal family. We compute these projections for a class of product cycles on $\mathcal X_g^s$ in terms of a determinant involving the universal theta divisors and Poincar\'e classes. Using Abel-Jacobi pullbacks of product cycles on $\mathcal X_g^s$ and their projections, we construct a new family of classes which we conjecture to lie in the Gorenstein kernels of the tautological rings $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal M^{\mathrm{ct}}_{g,n})$. In particular, we construct nontrivial elements of the Gorenstein kernels of $\mathsf{R}^5(\mathcal{M}_{5,2}^{\mathrm{ct}})$ and $\mathsf{R}^5(\mathcal{M}_{4,4}^{\mathrm{ct}})$.

On the Hilbert-Chow crepant resolution conjecture

We prove the Hilbert-Chow crepant resolution conjecture in the exceptional curve classes for all projective surfaces and all genera. In particular, this confirms Ruan's cohomological Hilbert-Chow crepant resolution conjecture. The proof exploits Fulton-MacPherson compactifications, reducing the conjecture to the case of the affine plane. As an application, using previous results of the author, we also deduce the families DT/GW correspondence for threefolds $S \times C$ in classes that are zero on the first factor, yielding a wall-crossing proof of the correspondence in this case. Finally, we speculate on the relationship between Hilbert schemes and Fulton-MacPherson compactifications beyond the topics considered in this work.

Admissible covers and stable maps

Moduli spaces of admissible covers and stable maps of target curves give rise to cycles on $\overline{M}_{g,n}$. We prove a formula relating these cycles. It recovers both the Ekedahl-Lando-Shapiro-Vainshtein formula and the Gromov-Witten/Hurwitz correspondence, providing a cycle-theoretic refinement thereof. The formula is verified computationally in low-genus cases with the help of Johannes Schmitt.

Unramified Gromov-Witten and Gopakumar-Vafa invariants

Kim, Kresch and Oh defined unramified Gromov-Witten invariants. For a threefold, Pandharipande conjectured that they are equal to Gopakumar-Vafa invariants (BPS invariants) in the case of Fano classes and primitive Calabi-Yau classes. We prove the conjecture using a wall-crossing technique. This provides an algebro-geometric construction of Gopakumar-Vafa invariants in these cases.

On quasimap invariants of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles

We compute odd-degree genus 1 quasimap (and Gromov--Witten) invariants of moduli spaces of Higgs $\mathrm{SL}_2$-bundles on a curve of genus $g\geq2$. We also compute certain invariants for all prime ranks. This proves some parts of author's conjectures on quasimap invariants of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles. More generally, our methods provide a computation scheme for genus 1 quasimap (and Gromov--Witten) invariants in the case when degrees of maps are coprime to the rank. This requires a careful analysis of the localisation formula for certain Quot schemes parametrising higher-rank quotients on an elliptic curve. Invariants for degrees which are not coprime to the rank exhibit a very different structure for a reason that we explain.

Enumerative mirror symmetry for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles and S-duality

We derive conjectures, called genus 1 Enumerative mirror symmetry for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles, which relate curve-counting invariants of moduli spaces of Higgs $\mathrm{SL}_r$-bundles to curve-counting invariants of moduli spaces of Higgs $\mathrm{PGL}_r$-bundles. This contrasts with Enumerative mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau 3-folds which relates curve-counting invariants to periods. We also provide extensive mathematical evidence for these conjectures. The conjectures are obtained with the help of the theory of quasimaps to moduli spaces of sheaves, Tanaka-Thomas's construction of Vafa-Witten theory, Jiang-Kool's enumerative S-duality of Vafa-Witten invariants and Manschot-Moore's calculations. We use the latter together with some basic computations to give a complete list of conjectural expressions for genus 1 quasimap invariants for all prime ranks. They have many interesting properties, among which is quantum $\chi$-independence. The wall-crossing to Gromov-Witten theory is also thoroughly discussed.

Gromov-Witten/Hurwitz wall-crossing

For a target variety $X$ and a nodal curve $C$, we introduce a one-parameter stability condition, termed $\epsilon$-admissibility, for maps from nodal curves to $X\times C$. If $X$ is a point, $\epsilon$-admissibility interpolates between moduli spaces of stable maps to $C$ relative to some fixed points and moduli spaces of admissible covers with arbitrary ramifications over the same fixed points and simple ramifications elsewhere on $C$. Using Zhou's entangled tails, we prove wall-crossing formulas relating invariants for different values of $\epsilon$. If $X$ is a surface, we use this wall-crossing in conjunction with author's quasimap wall-crossing to show that the relative Pandharipande-Thomas/Gromov-Witten correspondence of $X\times C$ and Ruan's extended crepant resolution conjecture of the pair $X^{[n]}$ and $[X^{(n)}]$ are equivalent up to explicit wall-crossings. We thereby prove the crepant resolution conjecture for 3-point genus-0 invariants in all classes, if $X$ is a toric del Pezzo surface.

Quasimaps to moduli spaces of sheaves

We develop a theory of quasimaps to a moduli space of sheaves $M$ on a surface $S$. Under some assumptions, we prove that moduli spaces of quasimaps are proper and carry a perfect obstruction theory. Moreover, they are naturally isomorphic to moduli spaces of sheaves on threefolds $S\times C$, where $C$ is a nodal curve. Using Zhou's theory of entangled tails, we establish a wall-crossing formula which therefore relates the Gromov-Witten theory of $M$ and the Donaldson-Thomas theory of $S\times C$ with relative insertions. We evaluate the wall-crossing formula for Hilbert schemes of points $S^{[n]}$, if $S$ is a del Pezzo surface.

Quasimaps to moduli spaces of sheaves on a $K3$ surface

In this article, we study quasimaps to moduli spaces of sheaves on a $K3$ surface $S$. We construct a surjective cosection of the obstruction theory of moduli spaces of quasimaps. We then establish reduced wall-crossing formulas which relate the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of moduli spaces of sheaves on $S$ and the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of $S\times C$, where $C$ is a nodal curve. As applications, we prove the Hilbert-schemes part of the Igusa cusp form conjecture; higher-rank/rank-one Donaldson-Thomas correspondence with relative insertions on $S\times C$, if $g(C)\leq1$; Donaldson-Thomas/Pandharipande-Thomas correspondence with relative insertions on $S\times \mathbb{P}^1$.

Elliptic curves in hyper-K\"ahler varieties

We show that the moduli space of elliptic curves of minimal degree in a general Fano variety of lines of a cubic fourfold is a non-singular curve of genus $631$. The curve admits a natural involution with connected quotient. We find that the general Fano contains precisely $3780$ elliptic curves of minimal degree with fixed (general) $j$-invariant. More generally, we express (modulo a transversality result) the enumerative count of elliptic curves of minimal degree in hyper-K\"ahler varieties with fixed $j$-invariant in terms of Gromov--Witten invariants. In $K3[2]$-type this leads to explicit formulas of these counts in terms of modular forms.
