Bounds on scattering amplitudes of non-identical scalar particles in 4d

We initiate the study of two-to-two scattering amplitudes involving two distinct scalar particles in $d = 4$ spacetime dimensions using the primal S-matrix bootstrap. We impose a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ global symmetry under which the two particles are the lightest ones carrying charges $(-,+)$ and $(+,-)$, guaranteeing their absolute stability and absence of triangular anomalous thresholds. For unequal masses, the presence of a pseudo-physical cut whose discontinuity is not directly constrained by physical unitarity qualitatively changes the bootstrap problem. We find several observables to be unbounded, while others obey non-trivial one-sided bounds or become bounded once another observable is fixed. In the equal-mass limit, where the pseudo-physical region disappears, two-sided bounds are recovered. As a proof of concept, we show that supplying information about the pseudo-physical discontinuity through an Omn\`es parametrisation also restores boundedness. Our results provide a starting point for future studies of physical processes such as pion-kaon and pion-nucleon scattering.

Bounds on Abelian Currents in 4d CFTs

We study four-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with an abelian $U(1)$ global symmetry using the conformal bootstrap approach. We obtain numerical bounds on the scaling dimensions of low-lying operators, the stress-tensor central charge, and a particular combination of the 't Hooft anomaly and the current central charge. Our analysis provides the first non-perturbative constraints on four-dimensional CFTs with conserved abelian currents and establishes a framework that can be extended to theories with non-abelian global symmetries.

Correlation Functions and Trace Anomalies in Weakly Relevant Flows

We study abstract weakly relevant flows in a general number of dimensions. They arguably provide the simplest example of renormalization group (RG) flows between two non-trivial fixed points. We compute several two-point correlation functions in position space valid along the whole RG flow. This is done by using conformal perturbation theory together with the solution of the Callan-Symanzik equation. From the explicit expressions of the two-point functions of conserved currents and the stress-tensor we extract the change in the central charges between the UV and IR fixed points. This immediately gives us $\Delta c$, the change of the $c-$trace anomaly between the UV and IR fixed points in 4d. We also discuss three-point functions. We couple weakly relevant flows to non-dynamical dilaton and graviton background fields in 4d. We compute the three-dilaton vertex in terms of the scalar two-point function and extract the value of $\Delta a$, the change of the $a$-trace anomaly between the UV and IR fixed points. We also compute the graviton-graviton-dilaton vertex in terms of the three-point function of two stress-tensors and a scalar, and extract the value of $\Delta c$. The $\Delta c$ values obtained with the two different methods agree.

Trace Anomalies and the Graviton-Dilaton Amplitude

We consider 3+1 dimensional Quantum Field Theories (QFTs) coupled to the dilaton and the graviton. We show that the graviton-dilaton scattering amplitude receives a universal contribution which is helicity flipping and is proportional to $\Delta c-\Delta a$ along any RG flow, where $\Delta c$ and $\Delta a$ are the differences of the UV and IR $c$- and $a$-trace anomalies respectively. This allows us to relate $\Delta c-\Delta a$ to spinning massive states in the spectrum of the QFT. We test our predictions in two simple examples: in the theory of a massive free scalar and in the theory of a massive Dirac fermion (a more complicated example is provided in a companion paper [1]). We discuss possible applications.

Bounds on scattering of neutral Goldstones

We study the space of $2\to 2$ scattering amplitudes of neutral Goldstone bosons in four space-time dimensions. We establish universal bounds on the first two non-universal Wilson coefficients of the low energy Effective Field Theory (EFT) for such particles. We reconstruct the analytic, crossing-symmetric, and unitary amplitudes saturating our bounds, and we study their physical content. We uncover non-perturbative Regge trajectories by continuing our numerical amplitudes to complex spins. We then explore the consequence of additional constraints arising when we impose the knowledge about the EFT up to the cut-off scale. In the process, we improve on some aspects of the numerical $S$-matrix bootstrap technology for massless particles.

Bounds on photon scattering

We study 2-to-2 scattering amplitudes of massless spin one particles in $d=4$ space-time dimensions, like real world photons. We define a set of non-perturbative observables (Wilson coefficients) which describe these amplitudes at low energies. We use full non-linear unitarity to construct various novel numerical bounds on these observables. For completeness, we also rederive some bounds using positivity only. We discover and explain why some of these Wilson coefficients cannot be bounded.

Nonperturbative Bounds on Scattering of Massive Scalar Particles in $d \geq 2$

We study two-to-two scattering amplitudes of a scalar particle of mass $m$. For simplicity, we assume the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and that the particle is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ odd. We consider two classes of amplitudes: the fully nonperturbative ones and effective field theory (EFT) ones with a cut-off scale $M$. Using the primal numerical method which allows us to impose full non-linear unitarity, we construct novel bounds on various observables in $2 \leq d \leq 4$ space-time dimensions for both classes of amplitudes. We show that our bounds are much stronger than the ones obtained by using linearized unitarity or positivity only. We discuss applications of our bounds to constraining EFTs. Finally, we compare our bounds to the amplitude in $\phi^4$ theory computed perturbatively at weak coupling, and find that they saturate the bounds.

Bootstrapping the $a$-anomaly in $4d$ QFTs

We study gapped 4d quantum field theories (QFTs) obtained from a relevant deformation of a UV conformal field theory (CFT). For simplicity, we assume the existence of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and a single $\mathbb{Z}_2$-odd stable particle and no $\mathbb{Z}_2$-even particles at low energies. Using unitarity, crossing and the assumption of maximal analyticity we compute numerically a lower bound on the value of the $a$-anomaly of the UV CFT as a function of various non-perturbative parameters describing the two-to-two scattering amplitude of the particle.

Bootstrapping 2d $\phi^4$ Theory with Hamiltonian Truncation Data

We combine the methods of Hamiltonian Truncation and the recently proposed generalisation of the S-matrix bootstrap that includes local operators to determine the two-particle scattering amplitude and the two-particle form factor of the stress tensor at $s>0$ in the 2d $\phi^4$ theory. We use the form factor of the stress tensor at $s\le 0$ and its spectral density computed using Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT), and inject them into the generalized S-matrix bootstrap set-up. The obtained results for the scattering amplitude and the form factor are fully reliable only in the elastic regime. We independently construct the "pure" S-matrix bootstrap bounds (bootstrap without including matrix elements of local operators), and find that the sinh-Gordon model and its analytic continuation the "staircase model" saturate these bounds. Surprisingly, the $\phi^4$ two-particle scattering amplitude also very nearly saturates these bounds, and moreover is extremely close to that of the sinh-Gordon/staircase model.

Form Factors and Spectral Densities from Lightcone Conformal Truncation

We use the method of Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) to obtain form factors and spectral densities of local operators $\mathcal{O}$ in $\phi^4$ theory in two dimensions. We show how to use the Hamiltonian eigenstates from LCT to obtain form factors that are matrix elements of a local operator $\mathcal{O}$ between single-particle bra and ket states, and we develop methods that significantly reduce errors resulting from the finite truncation of the Hilbert space. We extrapolate these form factors as a function of momentum to the regime where, by crossing symmetry, they are form factors of $\mathcal{O}$ between the vacuum and a two-particle asymptotic scattering state. We also compute the momentum-space time-ordered two-point functions of local operators in LCT. These converge quickly at momenta away from branch cuts, allowing us to indirectly obtain the time-ordered correlator and the spectral density at the branch cuts. We focus on the case where the local operator $\mathcal{O}$ is the trace $\Theta$ of the stress tensor.

Two-point Functions and Bootstrap Applications in Quantum Field Theories

We study two-point functions of local operators and their spectral representation in UV complete quantum field theories in generic dimensions focusing on conserved currents and the stress-tensor. We establish the connection with the central charges of the UV and IR fixed points. We re-derive c-theorems in 2d and show the absence of their direct analogs in higher dimensions. We conclude by focusing on quantum field theories with a mass gap. We study the stress tensor two-particle form factor, derive implications of unitarity and define concrete bootstrap problems in generic dimensions.

Spinning S-matrix Bootstrap in 4d

We review unitarity and crossing constraints on scattering amplitudes for particles with spin in four dimensional quantum field theories. As an application we study two to two scattering of neutral spin 1/2 fermions in detail. Assuming Mandelstam analyticity of its scattering amplitude, we use the numerical S-matrix bootstrap method to estimate various non-perturbative bounds on quartic and cubic (Yukawa) couplings.

Bootstrapping Massive Quantum Field Theories

We propose a new non-perturbative method for studying UV complete unitary quantum field theories (QFTs) with a mass gap in general number of spacetime dimensions. The method relies on unitarity formulated as positive semi-definiteness of the matrix of inner products between asymptotic states (in and out) and states created by the action of local operators on the vacuum. The corresponding matrix elements involve scattering amplitudes, form factors and spectral densities of local operators. We test this method in two-dimensional QFTs by setting up a linear optimization problem that gives a lower bound on the central charge of the UV CFT associated to a QFT with a given mass spectrum of stable particles (and couplings between them). Some of our numerical bounds are saturated by known form factors in integrable theories like the sine-Gordon, E8 and O(N) models.

Fermion Conformal Bootstrap in 4d

We apply numerical conformal bootstrap techniques to the four-point function of a Weyl spinor in 4d non-supersymmetric CFTs. We find universal bounds on operator dimensions and OPE coefficients, including bounds on operators in mixed symmetry representations of the Lorentz group, which were inaccessible in previous bootstrap studies. We find discontinuities in some of the bounds on operator dimensions, and we show that they arise due to a generic yet previously unobserved fake primary effect, which is related to the existence of poles in conformal blocks. We show that this effect is also responsible for similar discontinuities found in four-fermion bootstrap in 3d, as well as in the mixed-correlator analysis of the 3d Ising CFT. As an important byproduct of our work, we develop a practical technology for numerical approximation of general 4d conformal blocks.

Harmonic Analysis and Mean Field Theory

We review some aspects of harmonic analysis for the Euclidean conformal group, including conformally-invariant pairings, the Plancherel measure, and the shadow transform. We introduce two efficient methods for computing these quantities: one based on weight-shifting operators, and another based on Fourier space. As an application, we give a general formula for OPE coefficients in Mean Field Theory (MFT) for arbitrary spinning operators. We apply this formula to several examples, including MFT for fermions and "seed" operators in 4d, and MFT for currents and stress-tensors in 3d.

Scalar-Fermion Analytic Bootstrap in 4D

In this work we discuss an analytic bootstrap approach [1,2] in the context of spinning 4D conformal blocks [3,4]. As an example we study the simplest spinning case, the scalar-fermion correlator $\langle\phi\psi\phi\bar\psi\rangle$. We find that to every pair of primary scalar $\phi$ and fermion $\psi$ correspond two infinite towers of fermionic large spin primary operators. We compute their twists and products of OPE coefficients using both s-t and u-t bootstrap equations to the leading and sub-leading orders. We find that the leading order is represented by the scalar-fermion generalized free theory and the sub-leading order is governed by the minimal twist bosonic (light scalars, currents and the energy-momentum tensor) and fermionic (light fermions and the suppersymmetric current) operators present in the spectrum.

Weight Shifting Operators and Conformal Blocks

We introduce a large class of conformally-covariant differential operators and a crossing equation that they obey. Together, these tools dramatically simplify calculations involving operators with spin in conformal field theories. As an application, we derive a formula for a general conformal block (with arbitrary internal and external representations) in terms of derivatives of blocks for external scalars. In particular, our formula gives new expressions for "seed conformal blocks" in 3d and 4d CFTs. We also find simple derivations of identities between external-scalar blocks with different dimensions and internal spins. We comment on additional applications, including derivation of recursion relations for general conformal blocks, reducing inversion formulae for spinning operators to inversion formulae for scalars, and deriving identities between general 6j symbols (Racah-Wigner coefficients/"crossing kernels") of the conformal group.

General Bootstrap Equations in 4D CFTs

We provide a framework for generic 4D conformal bootstrap computations. It is based on the unification of two independent approaches, the covariant (embedding) formalism and the non-covariant (conformal frame) formalism. We construct their main ingredients (tensor structures and differential operators) and establish a precise connection between them. We supplement the discussion by additional details like classification of tensor structures of n-point functions, normalization of 2-point functions and seed conformal blocks, Casimir differential operators and treatment of conserved operators and permutation symmetries. Finally, we implement our framework in a Mathematica package and make it freely available.
