The inhomogeneous Khintchine Theorem in dimension two

We prove that the inhomogeneous variant of Khintchine's Theorem holds in dimension $2$ without any monotonicity assumption. This resolves the last remaining case in the metric theory of inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation: while the monotonicity assumption is known to be unnecessary in dimensions $m\geq 3$ and necessary in dimension $m=1$, the two-dimensional case has remained open. It also settles the final outstanding case of a Khintchine--Groshev-type theorem for the approximation of systems of linear forms, confirming a conjecture of the first and third authors. Our results bring the inhomogeneous theory of metric Diophantine approximation into alignment with its homogeneous counterpart.

Rectangular Shrinking Targets on Self-Similar Carpets

Since the introduction of the shrinking target problem by Hill and Velani in 1995 there has been a surge of interest in the area. In this paper we consider the case where the target is a rectangle, rather than a ball, and the underlying space is a self-similar carpet. We calculate the exact Hausdorff dimension of the resulting shrinking target set. Interestingly the Hausdorff dimension depends on the centre of the target, a condition uncommon in most other shrinking target type problems. This extends a theorem of Wang and Wu [Theorem 12.1, Math. Ann. 2021].

Inhomogeneous approximation for systems of linear forms with primitivity constraints

We study (inhomogeneous) approximation for systems of linear forms using integer points which satisfy additional primitivity constraints. The first family of primitivity constraints we consider were introduced in 2015 by Dani, Laurent, and Nogueira, and are associated to partitions of the coordinate directions. Our results in this setting strengthen a theorem of Dani, Laurent, and Nogueira, and address problems posed by those same authors. The second primitivity constraints we consider are analogues of the coprimality required in the higher-dimensional Duffin--Schaeffer conjecture, posed by Sprind\v{z}uk in the 1970's and proved by Pollington and Vaughan in 1990. Here, with attention restricted to systems of linear forms in at least three variables, we prove a univariate inhomogeneous version of the Duffin--Schaeffer conjecture for systems of linear forms, the multivariate homogeneous version of which was stated by Beresnevich, Bernik, Dodson, and Velani in 2009 and recently proved by the second author.

Recurrence rates for shifts of finite type

Let $\Sigma_{A}$ be a topologically mixing shift of finite type, let $\sigma:\Sigma_{A}\to\Sigma_{A}$ be the usual left-shift, and let $\mu$ be the Gibbs measure for a H\"{o}lder continuous potential that is not cohomologous to a constant. In this paper we study recurrence rates for the dynamical system $(\Sigma_{A},\sigma)$ that hold $\mu$-almost surely. In particular, given a function $\psi:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{N}$ we are interested in the following set $$R_{\psi}=\{{\texttt i}\in \Sigma_{A}:i_{n+1}\ldots i_{n+\psi(n)+1}=i_1\ldots i_{\psi(n)}\textrm{ for infinitely many }n\in\mathbb{N}\}.$$ We provide sufficient conditions for $\mu(R_{\psi})=1$ and sufficient conditions for $\mu(R_{\psi})=0$. As a corollary of these results, we discover a new critical threshold where the measure of $R_{\psi}$ transitions from zero to one. This threshold was previously unknown even in the special case of a non-uniform Bernoulli measure defined on the full shift. The proofs of our results combine ideas from Probability Theory and Thermodynamic Formalism. In our final section we apply our results to the study of dynamics on self-similar sets.

Weighted approximation in higher-dimensional missing digit sets

In this note, we use the mass transference principle for rectangles, recently obtained by Wang and Wu (Math. Ann., 2021), to study the Hausdorff dimension of sets of "weighted $\Psi$-well-approximable" points in certain self-similar sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. Specifically, we investigate weighted $\Psi$-well-approximable points in "missing digit" sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The sets we consider are natural generalisations of Cantor-type sets in $\mathbb{R}$ to higher dimensions and include, for example, four corner Cantor sets (or Cantor dust) in the plane with contraction ratio $\frac{1}{n}$ with $n \in \mathbb{N}$.

A note on dyadic approximation in Cantor's set

We consider the convergence theory for dyadic approximation in the middle-third Cantor set, $K$, for approximation functions of the form $\psi_{\tau}(n) = n^{-\tau}$ ($\tau \ge 0$). In particular, we show that for values of $\tau$ beyond a certain threshold we have that almost no point in $K$ is dyadically $\psi_{\tau}$-well approximable with respect to the natural probability measure on $K$. This refines a previous result in this direction obtained by the first, third, and fourth named authors (arXiv, 2020).

Independence inheritance and Diophantine approximation for systems of linear forms

The classical Khintchine-Groshev theorem is a generalization of Khintchine's theorem on simultaneous Diophantine approximation, from approximation of points in $\mathbb R^m$ to approximation of systems of linear forms in $\mathbb R^{nm}$. In this paper, we present an inhomogeneous version of the Khintchine-Groshev theorem which does not carry a monotonicity assumption when $nm>2$. Our results bring the inhomogeneous theory almost in line with the homogeneous theory, where it is known by a result of Beresnevich and Velani (2010) that monotonicity is not required when $nm>1$. That result resolved a conjecture of Beresnevich, Bernik, Dodson, and Velani (2009), and our work resolves almost every case of the natural inhomogeneous generalization of that conjecture. Regarding the two cases where $nm=2$, we are able to remove monotonicity by assuming extra divergence of a measure sum, akin to a linear forms version of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture. When $nm=1$ it is known by work of Duffin and Schaeffer (1941) that the monotonicity assumption cannot be dropped. The key new result is an independence inheritance phenomenon; the underlying idea is that the sets involved in the $((n+k)\times m)$-dimensional Khintchine-Groshev theorem ($k\geq 0$) are always $k$-levels more probabilistically independent than the sets involved the $(n\times m)$-dimensional theorem. Hence, it is shown that Khintchine's theorem itself underpins the Khintchine-Groshev theory.

Dyadic Approximation in the Middle-Third Cantor Set

In this paper, we study the metric theory of dyadic approximation in the middle-third Cantor set. This theory complements earlier work of Levesley, Salp, and Velani (2007), who investigated the problem of approximation in the Cantor set by triadic rationals. We find that the behaviour when we consider dyadic approximation in the Cantor set is substantially different to considering triadic approximation in the Cantor set. In some sense, this difference in behaviour is a manifestation of Furstenberg's times 2 times 3 phenomenon from dynamical systems, which asserts that the base 2 and base 3 expansions of a number are not both structured.

On the Hausdorff measure of shrinking target sets on self-conformal sets

In this article, we study the Hausdorff measure of shrinking target sets on self-conformal sets. The Hausdorff dimension of the sets we are interested in here was established by Hill and Velani in 1995. However, until recently, little more was known about the Hausdorff measure of these particular sets. In this paper we provide a complete characterisation of the Hausdorff measure of these sets, obtaining a dichotomy for the Hausdorff measure which is determined by the convergence or divergence of a sum depending on the radii of our "shrinking targets". Our main result complements earlier work of Levesley, Salp, and Velani~(2007), and recent work of Baker (2019).

A General Mass Transference Principle

In this paper we prove a general form of the Mass Transference Principle for $\limsup$ sets defined via neighbourhoods of sets satisfying a certain local scaling property. Such sets include self-similar sets satisfying the open set condition and smooth compact manifolds embedded in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our main result is applicable in locally compact metric spaces and allows one to transfer Hausdorff $g$-measure statements to Hausdorff $f$-measure statements. This work extends previous results of this type in several distinct directions.

The Mass Transference Principle: Ten Years On

In this article we discuss the Mass Transference Principle due to Beresnevich and Velani and survey several generalisations and variants, both deterministic and random. Using a Hausdorff measure analogue of the inhomogeneous Khintchine-Groshev Theorem, proved recently via an extension of the Mass Transference Principle to systems of linear forms, we give an alternative proof of a general inhomogeneous Jarn\'{\i}k-Besicovitch Theorem which was originally proved by Levesley. We additionally show that without monotonicity Levesley's theorem no longer holds in general. Thereafter, we discuss recent advances by Wang, Wu and Xu towards mass transference principles where one transitions from $\limsup$ sets defined by balls to $\limsup$ sets defined by rectangles (rather than from "balls to balls" as is the case in the original Mass Transference Principle). Furthermore, we consider mass transference principles for transitioning from rectangles to rectangles and extend known results using a slicing technique. We end this article with a brief survey of random analogues of the Mass Transference Principle.

A Mass Transference Principle for systems of linear forms and its applications

In this paper we establish a general form of the Mass Transference Principle for systems of linear forms conjectured in [1]. We also present a number of applications of this result to problems in Diophantine approximation. These include a general transference of Lebesgue measure Khintchine-Groshev type theorems to Hausdorff measure statements. The statements we obtain are applicable in both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous settings as well as allowing transference under any additional constraints on approximating integer points. In particular, we establish Hausdorff measure counterparts of some Khintchine-Groshev type theorems with primitivity constraints recently proved by Dani, Laurent and Nogueira [8].

Distribution Of Sequences Generated By Certain Simply-Constructed Normal Numbers

In 1949 Wall showed that $x = 0.d_1d_2d_3 \dots$ is normal if and only if $(0.d_nd_{n+1}d_{n+2} \dots)_n$ is a uniformly distributed sequence. In this article, we consider sequences which are slight variants on this. In particular, we show that certain normal numbers of the form $0.a_na_{n+1}a_{n+2} \dots$, where $a_n$ is a sequence of positive integers, give rise in a rather natural way to sequences which are not uniformly distributed. Motivated by a result of Davenport and Erd\H{o}s we also show that for a non-constant integer polynomial the sequence $(0.f(n)f(n+1)f(n+2) \dots)_n$ is not uniformly distributed.
