Machine Learning model driven prediction of the initial geometry in Heavy-Ion Collision experiments

We demonstrate high prediction accuracy of three important properties that determine the initial geometry of the heavy-ion collision (HIC) experiments by using supervised Machine Learning (ML) methods. These properties are the impact parameter, the eccentricity and the participant eccentricity. Though ML techniques have been used previously to determine the impact parameter of these collisions, we study multiple ML algorithms, their error spectrum, and sampling methods using exhaustive parameter scans and ablation studies to determine a combination of efficient algorithm and tuned training set that gives multi-fold improvement in accuracy for all three different heavy-ion collision models. The three models chosen are a transport model, a hydrodynamic model and a hybrid model. The motivation of using three different heavy-ion collision models was to show that even if the model is trained using a transport model, it gives accurate results for a hydrodynamic model as well as a hybrid model. We show that the accuracy of the impact parameter prediction depends on the centrality of the collision. With the standard application of ML training methods, prediction accuracy is considerable low for central collisions. Our method increases this accuracy by multiple folds. We also show that the eccentricity prediction accuracy can be improved by inclusion of the impact parameter as a feature in all these algorithms. We discuss how the errors can be minimized and the accuracy can be improved to a great extent in all the ranges of impact parameter and eccentricity predictions.

Giant coherence in driven systems

We study the noise-induced currents and reliability or coherence of transport in two different classes of rocking ratchets. For this, we consider the motion of Brownian particles in the over damped limit in both adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes subjected to unbiased temporally symmetric and asymmetric periodic driving force. In the case of a time symmetric driving, we find that even in the presence of a spatially symmetric simple sinusoidal potential, highly coherent transport occurs. These ratchet systems exhibit giant coherence of transport in the regime of parameter space where unidirectional currents in the deterministic case are observed. Outside this parameter range, i.e., when current vanishes in the deterministic regime, coherence in transport is very low. The transport coherence decreases as a function of temperature and is a non-monotonic function of the amplitude of driving. The transport becomes unreliable as we go from the adiabatic to the non-adiabatic domain of operation.

Solving the Advection-Diffusion Equations in Biological Contexts using the Cellular Potts Model

The Cellular Potts Model (CPM) is a robust, cell-level methodology for simulation of biological tissues and morphogenesis. Both tissue physiology and morphogenesis depend on diffusion of chemical morphogens in the extra-cellular fluid or matrix (ECM). Standard diffusion solvers applied to the cellular potts model use finite difference methods on the underlying CPM lattice. However, these methods produce a diffusing field tied to the underlying lattice, which is inaccurate in many biological situations in which cell or ECM movement causes advection rapid compared to diffusion. Finite difference schemes suffer numerical instabilities solving the resulting advection-diffusion equations. To circumvent these problems we simulate advection-diffusion within the framework of the CPM using off-lattice finite-difference methods. We define a set of generalized fluid particles which detach advection and diffusion from the lattice. Diffusion occurs between neighboring fluid particles by local averaging rules which approximate the Laplacian. Directed spin flips in the CPM handle the advective movement of the fluid particles. A constraint on relative velocities in the fluid explicitly accounts for fluid viscosity. We use the CPM to solve various diffusion examples including multiple instantaneous sources, continuous sources, moving sources and different boundary geometries and conditions to validate our approximation against analytical and established numerical solutions. We also verify the CPM results for Poiseuille flow and Taylor-Aris dispersion.

Noise induced currents and reliability of transport in frictional ratchets

We study the coherence of transport of an overdamped Brownian particle in frictional ratchet system in the presence of external Gaussian white noise fluctuations. The analytical expressions for the particle velocity and diffusion coefficient are derived for this system and the reliability or coherence of transport is analysed by means of their ratio in terms of a dimensionless P$\acute{e}$clet number. We show that the coherence in the transport can be enhanced or degraded depending sensitively on the frictional profile with respect to the underlying potential.

Diffusion accompanying noise induced transport in frictional ratchets

We study the noise induced transport of an overdamped Brownian particle in frictional ratchet systems in the presence of external Gaussian white noise fluctuations. The analytical expressions for current and diffusion coefficient are derived and the reliability or coherence of transport are discussed by means of their ratio. We show that frictional ratchets exhibit larger coherence as compared to the flashing and rocking ratchets.

Transport Coherence in Frictional Ratchets

We study the phenomena of noise induced transport in frictional ratchet systems. For this we consider a Brownian particle moving in a space dependent frictional medium in the presence of external white noise fluctuations. To get the directed transport, unlike in other ratchet models like flashing or rocking ratchets etc., we do not require the potential experienced by the particle to be asymmetric nor do we require the external fluctuations to be correlated. We have obtained analytical expressions for current and the diffusion coefficient. We show that the frictional ratchet do not exhibit a pronounced coherence in the transport in that the diffusion spread overshadows the accompanying directed transport in system with finite spatial extensions.

Bona fide Stochastic Resonance: A view point from stochastic energetics

We investigate the resonance type behaviour of an overdamped Brownian particle in a bistable potential driven by external periodic signal. It has been shown previously that the input energy pumped into the system by the external drive shows resonance type behaviour as function of noise strength. We further extend this idea to study the behaviour as function of frequency of the external driving force and show the occurrence of similar nonmonotonic behaviour, which can be ascribed as a signature of bona fide stochastic resonance. Both weak and strong driving limit has been explored indicating the occurrence of marginal supra-threshold stochastic resonance in a bistable potential system.

Giant diffusion and coherent transport in tilted periodic inhomogeneous systems

We investigate the dynamics of an overdamped Brownian particle moving in a washboard potential with space dependent friction coefficient. Analytical expressions have been obtained for current and diffusion coefficient. We show that the effective diffusion coefficient can be enhanced or suppressed compared to that of the uniform friction case. The diffusion coefficient is maximum near the critical threshold ($F_{c}$), which is sensitive to temperature and the frictional profile. In some parameter regime we observe that increase in noise (temperature) decreases the diffusion, which is counter-intuitive. This leads to coherent transport with large mean velocity accompanied by small diffusion. This is shown explicitly by analysis of Péclet number, which has been introduced to study coherent or optimal transport. This phenomena is complementary to giant diffusion.

A Biologically Inspired Ratchet Model of Two Coupled Brownian Motors

A ratchet model for coupled Brownian motors, inspired by the motion of individual two-headed molecular motors on cytoskeletal filaments, is proposed. Such motors are modeled as two elastically coupled Brownian particles, each of which moves in a flashing ratchet potential. The ratchet potentials felt by the individual particles are anti-correlated, modeling the successive binding and unbinding of the two motor heads to the filament. We obtain, via Langevin simulations, steady-state currents as functions of noise strength, the equilibrium separation of the particles and the rate of switching between potential states. We observe an enhanced current due to coupling, noise induced stability and phase-locked behaviour in the deterministic regime. A qualitative understanding of these features is provided.

Energetics of rocked inhomogeneous ratchets

We study the efficiency of frictional thermal ratchets driven by finite frequency driving force and in contact with a heat bath. The efficiency exhibits varied behavior with driving frequency. Both nonmonotonic and monotonic behavior have been observed. In particular the magnitude of efficiency in finite frequency regime may be more than the efficiency in the adiabatic regime. This is our central result for rocked ratchets. We also show that for the simple potential we have chosen, the presence of only spatial asymmetry (homogeneous system) or only frictional ratchet (symmetric potential profile), the adiabatic efficiency is always more than in the nonadiabatic case.

AC driven thermal ratchets

We consider the motion of a overdamped Brownian particle in periodic asymmetric potential with space dependent friction coefficient. In the presence of external time periodic forcing, the system shows multiple current reversals on varying the amplitude of the external forcing and the temperature of the thermal bath. In the adiabatic regime we find a single reversal of current as a function of noise strength which can only be accounted due to the presence of space dependent friction coefficient. For very large forcing term, the current does not go to zero, instead it asymptotically tends to a limiting value depending on the phase shift between the potential and the friction. This fact plays an important role in obtaining multiple current reversals.

Multiple current reversals in forced inhomogeneous ratchets

Transport properties of overdamped Brownian paricles in a rocked thermal ratchet with space dependent friction coefficient is studied. By tuning the parameters, the direction of current exhibit multiple reversals, both as a function of the thermal noise strength as well as the amplitude of rocking force. Current reversals also occur under deterministic conditions and exhibits intriguing structure. All these features arise due to mutual interplay between potential asymmetry, noise, driving frequency and inhomogeneous friction.

Motion in a rocked ratchet with spatially periodic friction

We present a detailed study of the transport and energetics of a Brownian particle moving in a periodic potential in the presence of an adiabatic external periodic drive. The particle is considered to move in a medium with periodic space dependent friction with the same periodicity as that of the potential but with a phase lag. We obtain several results, most of them arising due to the medium being inhomogeneous and are sensitive to the phase lag. When the potential is symmetric we show that efficiency of energy transduction can be maximised as a function of noise strength or temperature. However, in the case of asymmtertic potential the temperature may or may not facilitate the energy conversion but current reversals can be obtained as a function of temperature and the amplitude of the periodic drive. The reentrant behaviour of current can also be seen as a function of phase lag.

Efficiency and current reversals in spatially inhomogeneous ratchets

Efficiency of generation of net unidirectional current in an adiabatically driven symmetric periodic potential system is studied. The efficiency shows a maximum, in the case of an inhomogeneous system with spatially varying periodic friction coefficient, as a function of temperature. The ratchet is not most efficient when it gives maximum current. The direction of current may also be reversed as a function of noise strength when, instead, an asymmetric periodic potential is considered.

Mobility and stochastic resonance in spatially inhomogeneous system

The mobility of an overdamped particle, in a periodic potential tilted by a constant external field and moving in a medium with periodic friction coefficient is examined. When the potential and the friction coefficient have the same periodicity but have a phase difference, the mobility shows many interesting features as a function of the applied force, the temperature, etc. The mobility shows stochastic resonance even for constant applied force, an issue of much recent interest. The mobility also exhibits a resonance like phenomenon as a function of the field strength and noise induced slowing down of the particle in an appropriate parameter regime.

Stochastic Resonance in Washboard Potentials

We study the mobility of an overdamped particle in a periodic potential tilted by a constant force. The mobility exhibits a stochastic resonance in inhomogeneous systems with space dependent friction coefficient. The result indicates that the presence of oscillating external field is not essential for the observability of stochastic resonance, at least in the inhomogenous medium.
