Dynamical Chaos in a Dissipative Driven Quantum Soft Impact Oscillator

Dynamical chaos in a periodically driven, dissipative soft impact oscillator is investigated in the quantum regime using the complex-number quantum Langevin equation (c-number QLE). The averaged system dynamics are analyzed through a comprehensive suite of time-series diagnostics, including bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, Fourier spectra, and the 0-1 test. Systematic variation of the wall position reveals a rich sequence of dynamical transitions and grazing bifurcations, progressing from periodic to multiperiodic motion and culminating in chaotic behavior. These results demonstrate the persistence of impact-induced chaos under quantum dissipation and elucidate how environmental fluctuations influence non-linear dynamics in open quantum systems.

Quantum-Classical Correspondence in a Quartic Oscillator -- Corrections to Frequency and Bounds for Periodic Motion

We take a qualitative comparative look at quantum and classical quartic anharmonic oscillators. It has been shown that the behavior of the quantum anharmonic oscillator mimics that of the classical anharmonic oscillators with the structurally same Hamiltonian in the coherent state basis of the harmonic oscillators. The associated equation of motion allows us to use Lindstet-Poincare perturbation method to compute the classical frequency of the oscillation order by order, by taking care of its dependence on amplitude and the quantum corrections. We also derive a bound for periodicity of such oscillations in both the classical and quantum cases.

Phase diffusion and fluctuations in a dissipative Bose-Josephson junction

We analyze the phase diffusion, quantum fluctuations and their spectral features of an one-dimensional Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to a bosonic heat bath. We show the dependence of the phase diffusion coefficient on the on-site interaction parameter $U$ and the temperature in zero-phase and $\pi$-phase modes. We find that in the $\pi$-phase mode, the phase diffusion co-efficient as a function of $U$ decreases so long as $U$ is below a critical value while it increases above the critical value. This criticality of on-site interaction reflects a transition between Josephson oscillation and macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) regime. Based on the thermal canonical Wigner distribution, we calculate the coherence factor to understand its dependence on temperature and on-site interaction energy in Josephson oscillation and MQST regime. Furthermore, we discuss coherent and incoherent spectral properties in connection with the fluctuations of the relative phase and the population imbalance in both zero and $\pi$-phase modes from weak to strong dissipation regime.

Microscopic quantum generalization of classical Li\'{e}nard oscillators

Based on a system-reservoir model and an appropriate choice of nonlinear coupling, we have explored the microscopic quantum generalization of classical Li\'{e}nard systems. Making use of oscillator coherent states and canonical thermal distributions of the associated c-numbers, we have derived the quantum Langevin equation of the reduced system which admits of single or multiple limit cycles. It has been shown that detailed balance in the form of fluctuation-dissipation relation preserves the dynamical stability of the attractors even in case of vacuum excitation. The quantum versions of Rayleigh, Van der Pol and several other variants of Li\'{e}nard oscillators are derived as special cases in our theoretical scheme within a mean-field description.

Systematic designing of bi-rhythmic and tri-rhythmic models in families of Van der Pol and Rayleigh oscillators

Van der Pol and Rayleigh oscillators are two traditional paradigms of nonlinear dynamics. They can be subsumed into a general form of Li\'enard--Levinson--Smith(LLS) system. Based on a recipe for finding out maximum number of limit cycles possible for a class of LLS oscillator, we propose here a scheme for systematic designing of generalised Rayleigh and Van der Pol families of oscillators with a desired number of multiple limit cycles. Numerical simulations are explicitly carried out for systematic search of the parameter space for bi-rhythmic and tri-rhythmic systems and their higher order variants.

Nonlinear dynamics of emergent traveling waves in a reaction-Cattaneo system

Standard diffusion equation is based on Brownian motion of the dispersing species without considering persistence in the movement of the individuals. This description allows for the instantaneous spreading of the transported species over an arbitrarily large distances from their original location predicting infinite velocities. This feature is unrealistic particularly while considering biological invasion dynamics and a better description needs the consideration of dispersal with inertia. We here examine the behavior of non-infinitesimal perturbation on the steady state of an one-dimensional reaction-Cattaneo system with a cubic polynomial source term describing population dynamics or flame propagation models. It has been shown analytically that while linear analysis predicts stability of the homogeneous state, consideration of nonlinear contribution leads to a growth of spatiotemporal perturbation as a traveling wave. We show that the presence of a small finite relaxation time of the diffusive flux modifies the speed of the traveling wave. Specifically, we find that the wave speed decays with an increase of a finite relaxation time of flux. Our analytical predictions are well corroborated with the numerical results.

Parametric oscillations in a dissipative bosonic Josephson junction

We study the dynamics of a nonlinear dissipative bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) with a time-dependent sinusoidal perturbation in interaction term. We demonstrate parametric resonance where the system undergoes sustained periodic oscillations even in the presence of dissipation. This happens when the frequency of the perturbation is close to twice the frequency of the unperturbed Josephson oscillations and the strength of perturbation exceeds a critical threshold. We have formulated the threshold conditions for parametric oscillations. To explore the nature of the oscillations, we carry out a multiple time scale analysis of the stability boundaries in terms of the V-shaped Arnold's tongue in the parameter space. Full numerical simulations have been performed for the zero-, running- and $\pi$-phase modes of nonlinear Josephson effect. Our results demonstrate that in $\pi$-phase mode, the system is capable of making a transition from regular parametric to chaotic parametric oscillations as one crosses the stability boundary. Also, the phase difference undergoes phase slip before executing sustained parametric oscillations.

Reduction of Kinetic Equations to Li\'enard-Levinson-Smith Form: Counting Limit Cycles

We have presented an unified scheme to express a class of system of equations in two variables into a Li\'enard-Levinson-Smith (LLS) oscillator form. We have derived the condition for limit cycle with special reference to Rayleigh and Li\'enard systems for arbitrary polynomial functions of damping and restoring force. Krylov-Boguliubov (K-B) method is implemented to determine the maximum number of limit cycles admissible for a LLS oscillator atleast in the weak damping limit. Scheme is illustrated by a number of model systems with single cycle as well as the multiple cycle cases.

Dynamics of atomic and molecular solitary waves inatom-molecular hybrid Bose-Einstein condensates coupled by Magnetic Feshbach Resonance: Role of induced decays of Feshbach Molecules

Dynamics of atomic and molecular bright solitons in a hybrid atom-molecular BEC (Bose Einstein Condensate) system of 85Rb coupled through Magnetic Feshbach Resonance (MFR) has been investigated. By solving the time independent atom-molecular coupled equations, the initial atomic and molecular wavefunctions were obtained and the dynamics of the initial atomic and molecular waves in a spherical one-dimensional trap were studied by solving the time-dependent atom-molecular coupled equations. During evolution two types of induced or stimulated decays of the feshbach molecules were switched on. These two types of stimulated decays of the feshbach molecules to the two-atom continuum and to the bound level of the lowest hyperfinee state of the molecule were induced by laser or Radio Frequency fields. Hence the strength of these two induced decays can be controlled by varying the laser or RF field parameters e.g. intensity, detuning etc. It is found that depending on the relative strength of these two types of stimulated or induced decays initial atomic and molecular waves assume solitonic nature as bright solitons during evolution and the stability of these solitonic waves can be achieved by controlling the relative strength of induced decays in two different channels. It is shown that these two induced decays lead to the formation of stable atomic and molecular solitons by suppressing the initial oscillations and instability in the atom-molecular coupled system of 85Rb atoms.

Stochastic dynamics of two-step processes with harmonic potential

In this paper we address the one-dimensional problem of stochastic renewal in different damping environments. An ensemble of particles with some specified initial distribution in phase space are allowed to evolve stochastically till a certain instant of time (say,$tau$), when a restoring force is applied to bring them back to some point in configuration space. The physical quantities of interest that have been studied are the Survival Probability and the First Passage distribution for return to the specified target point. We observe nontrivial dependence of these quantities on $tau$ as well as on the width of the initial distribution, which has been taken to be Gaussian in position and velocity.

Fluctuation corrections on thermodynamic functions: Finite size effect

The explicit thermodynamic functions, in particular, the specific heat of a spin system interacting with a spin bath which exerts finite dissipation on the system are determined. We show that the specific heat is a sum of the products of a thermal equilibration factor that carries the temperature dependence and a dynamical correction factor, characteristic of the dissipative energy flow under steady state from the system. The variation of specific heat with temperature is accompanied by an abrupt transition that depends on these dynamical factors characteristic of the finite system size.

Coherent state of a weakly interacting ultracold Fermi gas

We examine the weakly interacting atoms in an ultracold Fermi gas leading to a state of macroscopic coherence, from a theoretical perspective. It has been shown that this state can be described as a fermionic coherent state. These coherent states are the eigenstates of fermionic annihilation operators, the eigenvalues being anti-commuting numbers or Grassmann numbers. By exploiting the simple rules of Grassmann algebra and a close kinship between relations evaluated for more familiar bosonic fields and those for fermionic fields, we derive the thermodynamic limit, the spontaneous symmetry breaking and the quasi-particle spectrum of the fermionic system.

Characterizing dynamical transitions in bistable system using non-equilibrium measurement of work

We show how Jarzynski relation can be exploited to analyze the nature of order-disorder and a bifurcation type dynamical transition in terms of a response function derived on the basis of work distribution over non-equilibrium paths between two thermalized states. The validity of the response function extends over linear as well as nonlinear regime and far from equilibrium situations.

Noise correlation-induced splitting of Kramers' escape rate from a metastable state

A correlation between two noise processes driving the thermally activated particles in a symmetric triple well potential, may cause a symmetry breaking and a difference in relative stability of the two side wells with respect to the middle one. This leads to an asymmetric localization of population and splitting of Kramers' rate of escape from the middle well, ensuring a preferential distribution of the products in the course of a parallel reaction.

Interference of stochastic resonances: Splitting of Kramers' rate

We consider the escape of particles located in the middle well of a symmetric triple well potential driven sinusoidally by two forces such that the potential wells roll as in stochastic resonance and the height of the potential barrier oscillates symmetrically about a mean as in resonant activation. It has been shown that depending on their phase difference the application of these two synchronized signals may lead to a splitting of time averaged Kramers' escape rate and a preferential product distribution in a parallel chemical reaction in the steady state.

Inhomogeneous quantum diffusion and decay of a meta-stable state

We consider the quantum stochastic dynamics of a system whose interaction with the reservoir is considered to be linear in bath co-ordinates but nonlinear in system co-ordinates. The role of the space-dependent friction and diffusion has been examined in the decay rate of a particle from a meta-stable well. We show how the decay rate can be hindered by inhomogeneous dissipation due nonlinear system-bath coupling strength.

Quantum escape kinetics over a fluctuating barrier

The escape rate of a particle over a fluctuating barrier in a double well potential exhibits resonance at an optimum value of correlation time of fluctuation. This has been shown to be important in several variants of kinetic model of chemical reactions . We extend the analysis of this phenomenon of resonant activation to quantum domain to show how quantization significantly enhances resonant activation at low temperature due to tunneling.

Langevin dynamics with dichotomous noise; direct simulation and applications

We consider the motion of a Brownian particle moving in a potential field and driven by dichotomous noise with exponential correlation. Traditionally, the analytic as well as the numerical treatments of the problem, in general, rely on Fokker-Planck description. We present a method for direct numerical simulation of dichotomous noise to solve the Langevin equation. The method is applied to calculate nonequilibrium fluctuation induced current in a symmetric periodic potential using asymmetric dichotomous noise and compared to Fokker-Planck-Master equation based algorithm for a range of parameter values. Our second application concerns the study of resonant activation over a fluctuating barrier.
