Vacuum and thermal fluctuations of a scalar field with point interactions

We investigate the vacuum and thermal fluctuations of a neutral massless scalar field living in Minkowski spacetime and interacting with a finite number of point-like obstacles, modelled by zero-range potentials. The system is described rigorously in terms of self-adjoint realizations of the Laplacian, under assumptions ensuring the absence of instabilities. Using the relative zeta-function technique, we determine the renormalized connected partition function and derive explicit expressions for the thermodynamic observables, characterizing both their low- and high-temperature behaviours. Furthermore, we derive of a convergent Born series expansion for the Casimir energy, which identifies multiple-scattering processes as the mechanism underlying vacuum forces. The latter decompose into pairwise contributions directed along the lines joining the obstacles, with intensities depending non-locally on the full configuration. We also present some numerical results for identical obstacles, indicating that the Casimir forces are always attractive in this context.

Homogenization of point interactions

We consider a non-relativistic quantum particle in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2$ or $d = 3$, interacting with singular zero-range potentials concentrated on a large collection of points. We analyze the homogenization regime where the intensities of the singular potentials and the distances between the points simultaneously go to zero as their number grows, while the total interaction strength remains finite. Assuming that the singular potentials have negative scattering lengths and are uniformly distributed, we prove the strong resolvent convergence as $N \to \infty$ of the family of operators to a Schr\"{o}dinger operator with a regular electrostatic potential. The result is obtained via $\Gamma$-converge of the associated quadratic forms. Moreover, in presence of an external trapping potential, the convergence is lifted to uniform resolvent sense.

On two-dimensional Dirac operators with critical delta-shell interactions

We study two-dimensional Dirac operators with singular interactions of electrostatic and Lorentzscalar type, supported either on a straight line or a circle. For certain critical values of the interaction strengths, the essential spectrum of such operators comprises an isolated point lying within the mass gap. We clarify the nature of this point in both geometries. For the straight line model, this point is known to be an eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity, and we provide a detailed analysis of the corresponding eigenfunctions. By contrast, in the case of a circle, we show that the said point is not itself an eigenvalue, but rather an accumulation point of a double sequence of simple eigenvalues. In view of the high degree of symmetry of the configurations under analysis, this behavior is unexpected and our findings lead us to formulate some conjectures concerning critical singular interactions supported on generic smooth curves.

The Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonian: self-adjointness, spectral and scattering properties

This work provides an introduction and overview on some basic mathematical aspects of the single-flux Aharonov-Bohm Schr\"odinger operator. The whole family of admissible self-adjoint realizations is characterized by means of four different methods: von Neumann theory, boundary triplets, quadratic forms and Kre{\u\i}n's resolvent formalism. The relation between the different parametrizations thus obtained is explored, comparing the asymptotic behavior of functions in the corresponding operator domains close to the flux singularity. Special attention is devoted to those self-adjoint realizations which preserve the same rotational symmetry and homogeneity under dilations of the basic differential operator. The spectral and scattering properties of all the Hamiltonian operators are finally described.

Pauli Hamiltonians with an Aharonov-Bohm Flux

We study a two-dimensional Pauli operator describing a charged quantum particle with spin $1/2$ moving on a plane in presence of an orthogonal Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux. We classify all the admissible self-adjont realizations and give a complete picture of their spectral and scattering properties. Symmetries of the resulting Hamiltonians are also discussed, as well as their connection with the Dirac operator perturbed by an Aharonov-Bohm singularity.

Deficiency indices for singular magnetic Schr\"{o}dinger operators

We show that the deficiency indices of magnetic Schr\"odinger operators with several local singularities can be computed in terms of the deficiency indices of operators carrying just one singularity each. We discuss some applications to physically relevant operators.

Rigorous derivation of the Efimov effect in a simple model

We consider a system of three identical bosons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with two-body zero-range interactions and a three-body hard-core repulsion of a given radius $a>0$. Using a quadratic form approach we prove that the corresponding Hamiltonian is self-adjoint and bounded from below for any value of $a$. In particular this means that the hard-core repulsion is sufficient to prevent the fall to the center phenomenon found by Minlos and Faddeev in their seminal work on the three-body problem in 1961. Furthermore, in the case of infinite two-body scattering length, also known as unitary limit, we prove the Efimov effect, \emph{i.e.}, we show that the Hamiltonian has an infinite sequence of negative eigenvalues $E_n$ accumulating at zero and fulfilling the asymptotic geometrical law $\;E_{n+1} / E_n \; \to \; e^{-\frac{2\pi}{s_0}}\,\; \,\text{for} \,\; n\to +\infty$ holds, where $s_0\approx 1.00624$.

Schr\"{o}dinger operators with multiple Aharonov-Bohm fluxes

We study the Schr\"{o}dinger operator describing a two-dimensional quantum particle moving in presence of $ N \geqslant 1 $ Aharonov-Bohm magnetic fluxes. We classify all the self-adjont realizations of such an operator, providing an explicit characterization of their domains and actions. Moreover, we examine their spectral and scattering properties, proving in particular the existence and completeness of wave operators in relation with the free dynamics.

Quadratic forms for Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonians

We consider a charged quantum particle immersed in an axial magnetic field, comprising a local Aharonov-Bohm singularity and a regular perturbation. Quadratic form techniques are used to characterize different self-adjoint realizations of the reduced two-dimensional Schr\"odinger operator, including the Friedrichs Hamiltonian and a family of singular perturbations indexed by $2 \times 2$ Hermitian matrices. The limit of the Friedrichs Hamiltonian when the Aharonov-Bohm flux parameter goes to zero is discussed in terms of $\Gamma$ - convergence.

Periodic striped states in Ising models with dipolar interactions

We review the problem of determining the ground states of 2D Ising models with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic and dipolar interactions, and prove a new result supporting the conjecture that, if the nearest neighbor coupling $J$ is sufficiently large, the ground states are periodic and `striped'. More precisely, we prove a restricted version of the conjecture, by constructing the minimizers within the variational class of states whose domain walls are arbitrary collections of horizontal and/or vertical straight lines.

A note on "Algebraic approach to Casimir force between two $\delta$-like potentials" (K. Ziemian, Ann. Henri Poincar\'e, Online First, 2021)

We comment on the recent work [1], and on its relations with our papers [2,3] cited therein. In particular we show that, contrarily to what stated in [1], the Casimir energy density determined therein in the case of a single delta-like singularity coincides with the energy density obtained previously in our paper [2] using a different approach.

Vacuum polarization with zero-range potentials on a hyperplane

The quantum vacuum fluctuations of a neutral scalar field induced by background zero-range potentials concentrated on a flat hyperplane of co-dimension $1$ in $(d+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime are investigated. Perfectly reflecting and semitransparent surfaces are both taken into account, making reference to the most general local, homogeneous and isotropic boundary conditions compatible with the unitarity of the quantum field theory. The renormalized vacuum polarization is computed for both zero and non-zero mass of the field, implementing a local version of the zeta regularization technique. The asymptotic behaviours of the vacuum polarization for small and large distances from the hyperplane are determined to leading order. It is shown that boundary divergences are soften in the specific case of a pure Dirac delta potential.

The semi-classical limit with a delta-prime potential

We consider the quantum evolution $e^{-i\frac{t}{\hbar}H_{\beta}} \psi_{\xi}^{\hbar}$ of a Gaussian coherent state $\psi_{\xi}^{\hbar}\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ localized close to the classical state $\xi \equiv (q,p) \in \mathbb{R}^{2}$, where $H_{\beta}$ denotes a self-adjoint realization of the formal Hamiltonian $-\frac{\hbar^{2}}{2m}\,\frac{d^{2}\,}{dx^{2}} + \beta\,\delta'_{0}$, with $\delta'_{0}$ the derivative of Dirac's delta distribution at $x = 0$ and $\beta$ a real parameter. We show that in the semi-classical limit such a quantum evolution can be approximated (w.r.t. the $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$-norm, uniformly for any $t \in \mathbb{R}$ away from the collision time) by $e^{\frac{i}{\hbar} A_{t}} e^{it L_{B}} \phi^{\hbar}_{x}$, where $A_{t} = \frac{p^{2}t}{2m}$, $\phi_{x}^{\hbar}(\xi) := \psi^{\hbar}_{\xi}(x)$ and $L_{B}$ is a suitable self-adjoint extension of the restriction to $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}_{c}({\mathscr M}_{0})$, ${\mathscr M}_{0} := \{(q,p) \in \mathbb{R}^{2}\,|\,q \neq 0\}$, of ($-i$ times) the generator of the free classical dynamics. While the operator $L_{B}$ here utilized is similar to the one appearing in our previous work [C. Cacciapuoti, D. Fermi, A. Posilicano, The semi-classical limit with a delta potential, Annali di Matematica Pura e Applicata (2020)] regarding the semi-classical limit with a delta potential, in the present case the approximation gives a smaller error: it is of order $\hbar^{7/2-\lambda}$, $0 < \lambda < 1/2$, whereas it turns out to be of order $\hbar^{3/2-\lambda}$, $0 < \lambda < 3/2$, for the delta potential. We also provide similar approximation results for both the wave and scattering operators.

Magnetic Perturbations of Anyonic and Aharonov-Bohm Schr\"{o}dinger Operators

We study the Hamiltonian describing two anyons moving in a plane in presence of an external magnetic field and identify a one-parameter family of self-adjoint realizations of the corresponding Schr\"{o}dinger operator. We also discuss the associated model describing a quantum particle immersed in a magnetic field with a local Aharonov-Bohm singularity. For a special class of magnetic potentials, we provide a complete classification of all possible self-adjoint extensions.

The semiclassical limit on a star-graph with Kirchhoff conditions

We consider the dynamics of a quantum particle of mass $m$ on a $n$-edges star-graph with Hamiltonian $H_K=-(2m)^{-1}\hbar^2 \Delta$ and Kirchhoff conditions in the vertex. We describe the semiclassical limit of the quantum evolution of an initial state supported on one of the edges and close to a Gaussian coherent state. We define the limiting classical dynamics through a Liouville operator on the graph, obtained by means of Kre\u{\i}n's theory of singular perturbations of self-adjoint operators. For the same class of initial states, we study the semiclassical limit of the wave and scattering operators for the couple $(H_K,H_{D}^{\oplus})$, where $H_{D}^{\oplus}$ is the free Hamiltonian with Dirichlet conditions in the vertex.

Integrable scalar cosmologies with matter and curvature

We show that several integrable (i.e., exactly solvable) scalar cosmologies considered by Fr\'e, Sagnotti and Sorin (Nuclear Physics \textbf{B 877}(3) (2013), 1028--1106) can be generalized to include cases where the spatial curvature is not zero and, besides a scalar field, matter or radiation are present with an equation of state $p^{(m)} = w\, \rho^{(m)}$; depending on the specific form of the self-interaction potential for the field, the constant $w$ can be arbitrary or must be fixed suitably.

The Casimir energy anomaly for a point interaction

The Casimir energy for a massless, neutral scalar field in presence of a point interaction is analyzed using a general zeta-regularization approach developed in earlier works. In addition to a regular bulk contribution, there arises an anomalous boundary term which is infinite despite renormalization. The intrinsic nature of this anomaly is briefly discussed.

The semi-classical limit with delta potentials

We consider the semi-classical limit of the quantum evolution of Gaussian coherent states whenever the Hamiltonian $\mathsf H$ is given, as sum of quadratic forms, by $\mathsf H= -\frac{\hbar^{2}}{2m}\,\frac{d^{2}\,}{dx^{2}}\,\dot{+}\,\alpha\delta_{0}$, with $\alpha\in\mathbb R$ and $\delta_{0}$ the Dirac delta-distribution at $x=0$. We show that the quantum evolution can be approximated, uniformly for any time away from the collision time and with an error of order $\hbar^{3/2-\lambda}$, $0\!<\!\lambda\!<\!3/2$, by the quasi-classical evolution generated by a self-adjoint extension of the restriction to $\mathcal C^{\infty}_{c}({\mathscr M}_{0})$, ${\mathscr M}_{0}:=\{(q,p)\!\in\!\mathbb R^{2}\,|\,q\!\not=\!0\}$, of ($-i$ times) the generator of the free classical dynamics; such a self-adjoint extension does not correspond to the classical dynamics describing the complete reflection due to the infinite barrier. Similar approximation results are also provided for the wave and scattering operators.
