Percolation in the vacant set of Poisson cylinders

We consider a Poisson point process on the space of lines in R^d, where a multiplicative factor u>0 of the intensity measure determines the density of lines. Each line in the process is taken as the axis of a bi-infinite cylinder of radius 1. We investigate percolative properties of the vacant set, defined as the subset of R^d that is not covered by any such cylinder. We show that in dimensions d >= 4, there is a critical value u_*(d) \in (0,\infty), such that with probability 1, the vacant set has an unbounded component if u u_*(d). For d=3, we prove that the vacant set does not percolate for large u and that the vacant set intersected with a two-dimensional subspace of R^d does not even percolate for small u>0.

Giant vacant component left by a random walk in a random d-regular graph

We study the trajectory of a simple random walk on a d-regular graph with d>2 and locally tree-like structure as the number n of vertices grows. Examples of such graphs include random d-regular graphs and large girth expanders. For these graphs, we investigate percolative properties of the set of vertices not visited by the walk until time un, where u>0 is a fixed positive parameter. We show that this so-called vacant set exhibits a phase transition in u in the following sense: there exists an explicitly computable threshold u* such that, with high probability as n grows, if u u*, then it has a volume of order log(n). The critical value u* coincides with the critical intensity of a random interlacement process (introduced by Sznitman [arXiv:0704.2560]) on a d-regular tree. We also show that the random interlacement model describes the structure of the vacant set in local neighbourhoods.

Entropy of random walk range on uniformly transient and on uniformly recurrent graphs

We study the entropy of the distribution of the set R_n of vertices visited by a simple random walk on a graph with bounded degrees in its first n steps. It is shown that this quantity grows linearly in the expected size of R_n if the graph is uniformly transient, and sublinearly in the expected size if the graph is uniformly recurrent with subexponential volume growth. This in particular answers a question asked by Benjamini, Kozma, Yadin and Yehudayoff (arXiv:0903.3179v1).

On the fragmentation of a torus by random walk

We consider a simple random walk on a discrete torus (Z/NZ)^d with dimension d at least 3 and large side length N. For a fixed constant u > 0, we study the percolative properties of the vacant set, consisting of the set of vertices not visited by the random walk in its first [uN^d] steps. We prove the existence of two distinct phases of the vacant set in the following sense: if u > 0 is chosen large enough, all components of the vacant set contain no more than a power of log(N) vertices with high probability as N tends to infinity. On the other hand, for small u > 0, there exists a macroscopic component of the vacant set occupying a non degenerate fraction of the total volume N^d. In dimensions d at least 5, we additionally prove that this macroscopic component is unique, by showing that all other components have volumes of order at most a power of log(N). Our results thus solve open problems posed by Benjamini and Sznitman in arXiv:math/0610802, who studied the small u regime in high dimension. The proofs are based on a coupling of the random walk with random interlacements on Z^d. Among other techniques, the construction of this coupling employs a refined use of discrete potential theory. By itself, this coupling strengthens a result in arXiv:0802.3654.

Random walks on discrete cylinders with large bases and random interlacements

Following the recent work of Sznitman (arXiv:0805.4516), we investigate the microscopic picture induced by a random walk trajectory on a cylinder of the form G_N x Z, where G_N is a large finite connected weighted graph, and relate it to the model of random interlacements on infinite transient weighted graphs. Under suitable assumptions, the set of points not visited by the random walk until a time of order |G_N|^2 in a neighborhood of a point with Z-component of order |G_N| converges in distribution to the law of the vacant set of a random interlacement on a certain limit model describing the structure of the graph in the neighborhood of the point. The level of the random interlacement depends on the local time of a Brownian motion. The result also describes the limit behavior of the joint distribution of the local pictures in the neighborhood of several distant points with possibly different limit models. As examples of G_N, we treat the d-dimensional box of side length N, the Sierpinski graph of depth N and the d-ary tree of depth N, where d >= 2.

On the disconnection of a discrete cylinder by a biased random walk

We consider a random walk on the discrete cylinder $({\mathbb{Z}}/N{\mathbb{Z}})^d\times{\mathbb{Z}}$, $d\geq3$ with drift $N^{-dα}$ in the $\mathbb{Z}$-direction and investigate the large $N$-behavior of the disconnection time $T^{\mathrm{disc}}_N$, defined as the first time when the trajectory of the random walk disconnects the cylinder into two infinite components. We prove that, as long as the drift exponent $α$ is strictly greater than 1, the asymptotic behavior of $T^{\mathrm{disc}}_N$ remains $N^{2d+o(1)}$, as in the unbiased case considered by Dembo and Sznitman, whereas for $α<1$, the asymptotic behavior of $T^{\mathrm{disc}}_N$ becomes exponential in $N$.

Logarithmic components of the vacant set for random walk on a discrete torus

This work continues the investigation, initiated in a recent work by Benjamini and Sznitman, of percolative properties of the set of points not visited by a random walk on the discrete torus (Z/NZ)^d up to time uN^d in high dimension d. If u>0 is chosen sufficiently small it has been shown that with overwhelming probability this vacant set contains a unique giant component containing segments of length c_0 log N for some constant c_0 > 0, and this component occupies a non-degenerate fraction of the total volume as N tends to infinity. Within the same setup, we investigate here the complement of the giant component in the vacant set and show that some components consist of segments of logarithmic size. In particular, this shows that the choice of a sufficiently large constant c_0 > 0 is crucial in the definition of the giant component.

Random walk on a discrete torus and random interlacements

We investigate the relation between the local picture left by the trajectory of a simple random walk on the torus (Z/NZ)^d, d >= 3, until u N^d time steps, u > 0, and the model of random interlacements recently introduced by Sznitman. In particular, we show that for large N, the joint distribution of the local pictures in the neighborhoods of finitely many distant points left by the walk up to time u N^d converges to independent copies of the random interlacement at level u.
