Profinite tensor powers

We discuss the problem of defining a tensor product of profinitely many copies of a vector space $V$, and propose a definition $\bigotimes_X^{\mathrm{mcc}} V$ in the special situation that (1) $V$ is finite-dimensional over $\mathbf{F}_2$, and (2) the profinite $X$ indexing the tensor factors is acted on with finitely many orbits by a pro-$2$-group. The "mcc" on the tensor sign stands for "magnetized and conditionally convergent." A variant construction makes sense when $V$ is a bimodule over a ring of the form $\mathbf{F}_2 \times \cdots \times \mathbf{F}_2$, and the index set $X$ has the profinite version of a cyclic order. The definition organizes some computations in Heegaard Floer homology: it can be pitched as a computation of the Heegaard Floer theory of some pro-$3$-manifolds, though we do not know how to define such a thing.

$G$-spectra of cyclic defect

Brou\'{e}'s Abelian Defect Conjecture predicts interesting derived equivalences between derived categories of modular representations of finite groups. We investigate a generalization of Brou\'{e}'s Conjecture to ring spectrum coefficients and prove this generalization in the cyclic defect case, following an argument of Rouquier.

Complex K-theory of mirror pairs

We formulate some conjectures about the K-theory of symplectic manifolds and their Fukaya categories, and prove some of them in very special cases.

Kasteleyn operators from mirror symmetry

Given a consistent bipartite graph $\Gamma$ in $T^2$ with a complex-valued edge weighting $\mathcal{E}$ we show the following two constructions are the same. The first is to form the Kasteleyn operator of $(\Gamma, \mathcal{E})$ and pass to its spectral transform, a coherent sheaf supported on a spectral curve in $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^2$. The second is to form the conjugate Lagrangian $L \subset T^* T^2$ of $\Gamma$, equip it with a brane structure prescribed by $\mathcal{E}$, and pass to its mirror coherent sheaf. This lives on a stacky toric compactification of $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^2$ determined by the Legendrian link which lifts the zig-zag paths of $\Gamma$ (and to which the noncompact Lagrangian $L$ is asymptotic). We work in the setting of the coherent-constructible correspondence, a sheaf-theoretic model of toric mirror symmetry. We also show that tensoring with line bundles on the compactification is mirror to certain Legendrian autoisotopies of the asymptotic boundary of $L$.

The Alexander polynomial at prime powers

When $K$ is a knot and $p \gg 0$ is a prime, we discuss a finite set whose cardinality is $\Delta_K(p^n)$, the value of the Alexander polynomial of $K$ at $p^n$.

Brane structures in microlocal sheaf theory

Let $L$ be an exact Lagrangian submanifold of a cotangent bundle $T^* M$, asymptotic to a Legendrian submanifold $\Lambda \subset T^{\infty} M$. We study a locally constant sheaf of $\infty$-categories on $L$, called the sheaf of brane structures or $\mathrm{Brane}_L$. Its fiber is the $\infty$-category of spectra, and we construct a Hamiltonian invariant, fully faithful functor from $\Gamma(L,\mathrm{Brane}_L)$ to the $\infty$-category of sheaves of spectra on $M$ with singular support in $\Lambda$.

Cubic Planar Graphs and Legendrian Surface Theory

We study Legendrian surfaces determined by cubic planar graphs. Graphs with distinct chromatic polynomials determine surfaces that are not Legendrian isotopic, thus giving many examples of non-isotopic Legendrian surfaces with the same classical invariants. The Legendrians have no exact Lagrangian fillings, but have many interesting non-exact fillings. We obtain these results by studying sheaves on a three-ball with microsupport in the surface. The moduli of such sheaves has a concrete description in terms of the graph and a beautiful embedding as a holomorphic Lagrangian submanifold of a symplectic period domain, a Lagrangian that has appeared in the work of Dimofte-Gabella-Goncharov [DGGo]. We exploit this structure to find conjectural open Gromov-Witten invariants for the non-exact filling, following Aganagic-Vafa [AV, AV2].

On the combinatorics of exact Lagrangian surfaces

We study Weinstein 4-manifolds which admit Lagrangian skeleta given by attaching disks to a surface along a collection of simple closed curves. In terms of the curves describing one such skeleton, we describe surgeries that preserve the ambient Weinstein manifold, but change the skeleton. The surgeries can be iterated to produce more such skeleta --- in many cases, infinitely many more. Each skeleton is built around a Lagrangian surface. Passing to the Fukaya category, the skeletal surgeries induce cluster transformations on the spaces of rank one local systems on these surfaces, and noncommutative analogues of cluster transformations on the spaces of higher rank local systems. In particular, the problem of producing and distinguishing such Lagrangians maps to a combination of combinatorial-geometric questions about curve configurations on surfaces and algebraic questions about exchange graphs of cluster algebras. Conversely, this expands the dictionary relating the cluster theory of character varieties, positroid strata, and related spaces to the symplectic geometry of Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian knots, by incorporating cluster charts more general than those associated to bicolored surface graphs.

Cluster varieties from Legendrian knots

Many interesting spaces --- including all positroid strata and wild character varieties --- are moduli of constructible sheaves on a surface with microsupport in a Legendrian link. We show that the existence of cluster structures on these spaces may be deduced in a uniform, systematic fashion by constructing and taking the sheaf quantizations of a set of exact Lagrangian fillings in correspondence with isotopy representatives whose front projections have crossings with alternating orientations. It follows in turn that results in cluster algebra may be used to construct and distinguish exact Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian links in the standard contact three space.

Representations of finite groups on modules over K-theory (with an appendix by Akhil Mathew)

Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\mathbf{K}_p$ denote the completion at $p$ of the complex $K$-theory spectrum. $\mathbf{K}_p$ is a commutative ring spectrum that in some ways is very similar to the usual ring $\mathbf{Z}_p$ of $p$-adic integers. We discuss $G$-actions on $\mathbf{K}_p$-modules, and propose to study them by analogy with the classical theory of modular representations of $G$.

Functoriality, Smith theory, and the Brauer homomorphism

If $\sigma$ is an automorphism of order $p$ of the semisimple group $\mathbf{G}$, there is a natural correspondence between mod $p$ cohomological automorphic forms on $\mathbf{G}$ and $\mathbf{G}^\sigma$. We describe this correspondence in the global and local settings.

Legendrian knots and constructible sheaves

We study the unwrapped Fukaya category of Lagrangian branes ending on a Legendrian knot. Our knots live at contact infinity in the cotangent bundle of a surface, the Fukaya category of which is equivalent to the category of constructible sheaves on the surface itself. Consequently, our category can be described as constructible sheaves with singular support controlled by the front projection of the knot. We use a theorem of Guillermou-Kashiwara-Schapira to show that the resulting category is invariant under Legendrian isotopies, and conjecture it is equivalent to the representation category of the Chekanov-Eliashberg differential graded algebra. We also find two connections to topological knot theory. First, drawing a positive braid closure on the annulus, the moduli space of rank-n objects maps to the space of local systems on a circle. The second page of the spectral sequence associated to the weight filtration on the pushforward of the constant sheaf is the (colored-by-n) triply-graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology. Second, drawing a positive braid closure in the plane, the number of points of our moduli spaces over a finite field with q elements recovers the lowest coefficient in 'a' of the HOMFLY polynomial of the braid closure.

Skeleta of Affine Hypersurfaces

A smooth affine hypersurface Z of complex dimension n is homotopy equivalent to an n-dimensional cell complex. Given a defining polynomial f for Z as well as a regular triangulation of its Newton polytope, we provide a purely combinatorial construction of a compact topological space S as a union of components of real dimension n, and prove that S embeds into Z as a deformation retract. In particular, Z is homotopy equivalent to S.

Noncommutative Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence and the Heegaard Floer homology of double covers

Let A be a dg algebra over F_2 and let M be a dg A-bimodule. We show that under certain technical hypotheses on A, a noncommutative analog of the Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence starts at the Hochschild homology of the derived tensor product of M with itself and converges to the Hochschild homology of M. We apply this result to bordered Heegaard Floer theory, giving spectral sequences associated to Heegaard Floer homology groups of certain branched and unbranched double covers.

Constructible functions and Lagrangian cycles on orbifolds

On a smooth manifold M, the Kashiwara index formula expresses the weighted Euler characteristic of a constructible function in terms of its characteristic cycle. We generalize this formula to the case when M is a smooth orbifold, answering a question of Behrend.
