On asymptotic expansions of the density of states for Poisson distributed random Schr\"odinger operators

We study a random Schr\"odinger operator with a potential distributed according to a Poisson process. Asymptotic expansions for traces of resolvents in the limit of small disorder are derived. Explicit estimates for the expansion coefficients are given and we show that their infinite volume limits are finite as the spectral parameter approaches the spectrum of the free Laplacian. As an application we derive bounds on the integrated density of states.

Resonances for Atoms in Dipole approximation of non-relativistic QED

We consider atoms or molecules coupled to the quantized electromagnetic radiation field in a dipole approximation. We show the existence of ground states and resonance states in situations where the eigenvalues are degenerate and protected by a symmetry group. We show that ground states and resonance states as well as their energies depend analytically on the coupling constant. Our results are an application of the result in [20], which in turn is obtained using operator theoretic renormalization.

The European Satellite-Based QKD System EAGLE-1

The satellite mission EAGLE-1 represents an important step towards a future pan-European secure quantum key distribution (QKD) network. The public-private partnership behind the mission consists of a consortium of universities, research institutes, and companies partially funded by ESA, the European Union, and supported by national delegations. This unique combination of academic partners and industry facilitates a swift knowledge transfer from basic research to commercial application. Within the consortium, Tesat-Spacecom (TESAT) is responsible for developing and integrating the payload assembly of the low-earth orbit EAGLE-1 satellite. In addition, TESAT provides the SCOT80 laser terminal with minor adaptations for the mission. Here, we report on the status, technical aspects and TESATs contribution to the satellite-to-ground prepare-and-measure QKD mission.

Non-Fock Ground States in the Translation-Invariant Nelson Model Revisited Non-Perturbatively

The Nelson model, describing a quantum mechanical particle linearly coupled to a bosonic field, exhibits the infrared problem in the sense that no ground state exists at arbitrary total momentum. However, passing to a non-Fock representation, one can prove the existence of so-called dressed one-particle states. In this article, we give a simple non-perturbative proof for the existence of such one-particle states at arbitrary coupling strength and for almost all total momenta in a physically motivated momentum region. Our results hold both for the non- and the semi-relativistic Nelson model.

Approximating the density of states for Poisson distributed random Schroedinger operators

We consider a Schroedinger operator with random potential distributed according to a Poisson process. We show that expectations of matrix elements of the resolvent as well as the density of states can be approximated to arbitrary precision in powers of the coupling constant. The expansion coefficients are given in terms of expectations obtained by Neumann expanding the potential around the free Laplacian. One can control these expansion coefficients in the infinite volume limit. We show that for this limit the boundary value as the spectral parameter approaches the real axis exists as well. Our results are valid for arbitrary strength of the disorder parameter, including the small disorder regime.

On dilation analyticity and spatial exponential decay of atomic ground states in non-relativistic qed

We consider the ground state and the ground state energy of an atom with spinless electrons in the framework of non-relativistic qed. We show that the ground state energy as well as the ground state depend analytically on the parameters of the group of dilations, the parameter of a group of spatial dependent phase changes, and on the minimal coupling constant. As a corollary we obtain spatial exponential decay of the ground state as well as of its dilation analytic extension. No infrared regularization is needed for the result. Our result is based on operator theoretic renormalization.

Symmetries in non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics

We define symmetries in non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics, which have the physical interpretation of rotation, parity and time reversal symmetry. We collect transformation properties related to these symmetries in Fock space representation as well as in the Schr\"odinger representation. As an application, we generalize and improve theorems about Kramer's degeneracy in non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics.

Degenerate perturbation theory for models of quantum field theory with symmetries

We consider Hamiltonians of models describing non-relativistic quantum mechanical matter coupled to a relativistic field of bosons. If the free Hamiltonian has an eigenvalue, we show that this eigenvalue persists also for nonzero coupling. The eigenvalue of the free Hamiltonian may be degenerate provided there exists a symmetry group acting irreducibly on the eigenspace. Furthermore, if the Hamiltonian depends analytically on external parameters then so does the eigenvalue and eigenvector. Our result applies to the ground state as well as resonance states. For our results we assume a mild infrared condition. The proof is based on operator theoretic renormalization. It generalizes the method used in [15] to non-degenerate situations, where the degeneracy is protected by a symmetry group, and utilizes Schur's lemma from representation theory.

On asymptotic expansions of resolvents for Poisson distributed random Schr\"odinger operators

We study expectation values of matrix elements of the resolvent for a random Schr\"odinger operator with potential distributed according to a Poisson process. Asymptotic expansions for these matrix elements of resolvents in the limit of small disorder are derived. Explicit estimates for the expansion coefficients are given and we show that their infinite volume limits are finite as the spectral parameter approaches the spectrum of the free Laplacian.

Ground States for Infrared Renormalized Translation-Invariant Non-Relativistic QED

We consider a translation-invariant Pauli-Fierz model describing a non-relativistic charged quantum mechanical particle interacting with the quantized electromagnetic field. The charged particle may be spinless or have spin one half. We decompose the Hamiltonian with respect to the total momentum into a direct integral of so called fiber Hamiltonians. We perform an infrared renormalization, in the sense of norm resolvent convergence, for each fiber Hamiltonian, which has the physical interpretation of removing an infinite photon cloud. We show that the renormalized fiber Hamiltonians have a ground state for almost all values for the total momentum with modulus less than one.

FKN Formula and Ground State Energy for the Spin Boson Model with External Magnetic Field

We consider the spin boson model with external magnetic field. We prove a path integral formula for the heat kernel, known as Feynman-Kac-Nelson (FKN) formula. We use this path integral representation to express the ground state energy as a stochastic integral. Based on this connection, we determine the expansion coefficients of the ground state energy with respect to the magnetic field strength and express them in terms of correlation functions of a continuous Ising model. From a recently proven correlation inequality, we can then deduce that the second order derivative is finite. As an application, we show existence of ground states in infrared-singular situations.

Correlation Bound for a One-Dimensional Continuous Long-Range Ising Model

We consider a measure given as the continuum limit of a one-dimensional Ising model with long-range translationally invariant interactions. Mathematically, the measure can be described by a self-interacting Poisson driven jump process. We prove a correlation inequality, estimating the magnetic susceptibility of this model, which holds for small $L^1$-norm of the interaction function. The bound on the magnetic susceptibility has applications in quantum field theory and can be used to prove existence of ground states for the spin boson model.

On Existence of Ground States in the Spin Boson Model

We show the existence of ground states in the massless spin boson model without any infrared regularization. Our proof is non-perturbative and relies on a compactness argument. It works for arbitrary values of the coupling constant under the hypothesis that the second derivative of the ground state energy as a function of a constant external magnetic field is bounded.

Thermal Ionization for Short-Range Potentials

We study a concrete model of a confined particle in form of a Schr\"odinger operator with a compactly supported smooth potential coupled to a bosonic field at positive temperature. We show, that the model exhibits thermal ionization for any positive temperature, provided the coupling is sufficiently small. Mathematically, one has to rule out that zero is an eigenvalue of the self-adjoint generator of time evolution - the Liouvillian. This will be done by using positive commutator methods with dilations in the space of scattering functions. Our proof relies on a spatial cutoff in the coupling but does otherwise not require any unnatural restrictions.

Renormalization Analysis for Degenerate Ground States

We consider a Hamilton operator which describes a finite dimensional quantum mechanical system with degenerate eigenvalues coupled to a field of relativistic bosons. We show that the ground state projection and the ground state energy are analytic functions of the coupling constant in a cone with apex at the origin, provided a mild infrared assumption holds. To show the result operator theoretic renormalization is used and extended to degenerate situations.

On Asymptotic Expansions in Spin Boson Models

We consider expansions of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of models of quantum field theory. For a class of models known as generalized spin boson model we prove the existence of asymptotic expansions of the ground state and the ground state energy to arbitrary order. We need a mild but very natural infrared assumption, which is weaker than the assumption usually needed for other methods such as operator theoretic renormalization to be applicable. The result complements previously shown analyticity properties.
