Topological nodal-line fermions in ZrSiSe and ZrSiTe

The discovery of topological semimetal phase in three-dimensional (3D) systems is a new breakthrough in topological material research. Dirac nodal-line semimetal is one of the three topological semimetal phases discovered so far; it is characterized by linear band crossing along a line/loop, contrasted with the linear band crossing at discrete momentum points in 3D Dirac and Weyl semimetals. The study of nodal-line semimetal is still at initial stage; only three material systems have been verified to host nodal line fermions until now, including PbTaSe2, PtSn 4and ZrSiS. In this letter, we report evidence of nodal line fermions in ZrSiSe and ZrSiTe probed in de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) quantum oscillations. Although ZrSiSe and ZrSiTe share similar layered structure with ZrSiS, our measurements of angular dependences of dHvA oscillations indicate the Fermi surface (FS) enclosing Dirac nodal line is of 2D character in ZiSiTe, in contrast with 3D-like FS in ZrSiSe and ZrSiS. Another important property revealed in our experiment is that the nodal line fermion density in ZrSi(S/Se) (~ 10^20-10^21 cm^-3) is much higher than the Dirac/Weyl fermion density of any known topological materials. In addition, we have demonstrated ZrSiSe and ZrSiTe single crystals can be thinned down to 2D atomic thin layers through microexfoliation, which offers a promising platform to verify the predicted 2D topological insulator in the monolayer materials with ZrSiS-type structure

Fermi surface reconstruction in FeSe under high pressure

We report Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation measurements on FeSe under high pressure up to $P$ = 16.1 kbar. We find a sudden change in SdH oscillations at the onset of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetism at $P$ $\sim$ 8 kbar. We argue that this change can be attributed to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by the antiferromagnetic order. The negative d$T_c$/d$P$ observed in a range between $P$ $\sim$ 8 and 12 kbar may be explained by the reduction in the density of states due to the reconstruction. The ratio of the transition temperature to the effective Fermi energy remains high under high pressure: $k_BT_c/E_F$ $\sim$ 0.1 even at $P$ = 16.1 kbar.

Evidence of topological two-dimensional metallic surface states in thin bismuth nanoribbons

Understanding of the exotic quantum phenomena in bulk bismuth beyond its ultraquantum limit still remains controversial and gives rise to a renewed interest. The focus of the issues is whether these quantum properties have a conventional bulk nature or just the surface effect due to the significant spin-orbital interaction and in relation to the Bi-based topological insulators. Here, we present angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) measurements on single-crystal bismuth nanoribbons of different thickness with magnetic fields up to 31 T. In thin nanoribbons with thickness of ~40 nm, a two-fold rational symmetry of the low field AMR spectra and two sets of 1/2-shifted (i.e. γ=1/2) Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations with exact two- dimensional (2D) character were obtained. However, when the thickness of the ribbon increases, a 3D bulk-like SdH oscillations with γ=0 and a four-fold rotational symmetry of the AMR spectra appear. These results unambiguously provided the first transport evidence of the topological 2D metallic surface states in thinner nanoribbons with an insulating bulk. Our observations provide a promising pathway to understand the quantum phenomena in Bi arising from the surface states.
