Sub-actions for geodesic flows on locally CAT(-1) spaces

We extend a result of Lopes and Thieullen on sub-actions for smooth Anosov flows to the setting of geodesic flow on locally CAT(-1) spaces. This allows us to use arguments originally due to Croke and Dairbekov to prove a volume rigidity theorem for some interesting locally CAT(-1) spaces, including quotients of Fuchsian buildings and surface amalgams.

Local product structure for equilibrium states of geodesic flows and applications

Let $S$ be a compact surface of genus $\geq 2$ equipped with a metric that is flat everywhere except at finitely many cone points with angles greater than $2\pi$. We examine the geodesic flow on $S$ and prove local product structure for a wide class of equilibrium states. Using this, we establish the Bernoulli property for these systems. We also establish local product structure for a similar class of equilibrium states for geodesic flows on rank 1, nonpositively curved manifolds.

Unique equilibrium states for geodesic flows on flat surfaces with singularities

Consider a compact surface of genus $\geq 2$ equipped with a metric that is flat everywhere except at finitely many cone points with angles greater than $2\pi$. Following the technique in the work of Burns, Climenhaga, Fisher, and Thompson, we prove that sufficiently regular potential functions have unique equilibrium states if the singular set does not support the full pressure. Moreover, we show that the pressure gap holds for any potential which is locally constant on a neighborhood of the singular set. Finally, we establish that the corresponding equilibrium states have the $K$-property, and closed regular geodesics equidistribute.

Entropy rigidity for finite volume strictly convex projective manifolds

We prove entropy rigidity for finite volume strictly convex projective manifolds in dimensions $\geq 3$, generalizing the work of arXiv:1708.03983 to the finite volume setting. The rigidity theorem uses the techniques of Besson, Courtois, and Gallot's entropy rigidity theorem. It implies uniform lower bounds on the volume of any finite volume strictly convex projective manifold in dimensions $\geq 3$.

Strong symbolic dynamics for geodesic flow on CAT(-1) spaces and other metric Anosov flows

We prove that the geodesic flow on a locally CAT(-1) metric space which is compact, or more generally convex cocompact with non-elementary fundamental group, can be coded by a suspension flow over an irreducible shift of finite type with H\"older roof function. This is achieved by showing that the geodesic flow is a metric Anosov flow, and obtaining H\"older regularity of return times for a special class of geometrically constructed local cross-sections to the flow. We obtain a number of strong results on the dynamics of the flow with respect to equilibrium measures for H\"older potentials. In particular, we prove that the Bowen-Margulis measure is Bernoulli except for the exceptional case that all closed orbit periods are integer multiples of a common constant. We show that our techniques also extend to the geodesic flow associated to a projective Anosov representation, which verifies that the full power of symbolic dynamics is available in that setting.

A quantitative shrinking target result on Sturmian sequences for rotations

Let $R_\alpha$ be an irrational rotation of the circle, and code the orbit of any point $x$ by whether $R_\alpha^i(x)$ belongs to $[0,\alpha)$ or $[\alpha,1)$ -- this produces a Sturmian sequence. A point is undetermined at step $j$ if its coding up to time $j$ does not determine its coding at time $j+1$. We prove a pair of results on the asymptotic frequency of a point being undetermined, for full measure sets of $\alpha$ and $x$.

Entropy Rigidity and Hilbert Volume

For a closed, strictly convex projective manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ that admits a hyperbolic structure, we show that the ratio of Hilbert volume to hyperbolic volume is bounded below by a constant that depends only on dimension. We also show that for such spaces, if topological entropy of the geodesic flow goes to zero, the volume must go to infinity. These results follow from adapting Besson--Courtois--Gallot's entropy rigidity result to Hilbert geometries.

The weak specification property for geodesic flows on CAT(-1) spaces

We prove that the geodesic flow on a compact locally CAT(-1) space has the weak specification property, and give various applications. We show that every H\"older potential on the space of geodesics has a unique equilibrium state. We establish the equidistribution of weighted periodic orbits and the large deviations principle for all such measures. The thermodynamic results are proved for the class of expansive flows with weak specification.

Compact forms of homogeneous spaces and higher-rank semisimple group actions

This paper proves that there are no compact forms for a large class of homogeneous spaces admitting actions by higher-rank semisimple Lie groups. It builds on Zimmer's approach for studying such spaces using cocycle superrigidity. The proof involves cocycle superrigidity, measure rigidity for unipotent flows, techniques from partially hyperbolic dynamics, and the geometry and pseudo-Riemannian structure of the homogeneous space.

Everywhere divergence of the one-sided ergodic Hilbert transform and Liouville numbers

We prove some results on the behavior of infinite sums of the form $Σf\circ T^n(x)\frac{1}{n}$, where $T:S^1\to S^1$ is an irrational circle rotation and $f$ is a mean-zero function on $S^1$. In particular, we show that for a certain class of functions $f$, there are Liouville $α$ for which this sum diverges everywhere. We also show that there are Liouville $α$ for which the sum converges everywhere.

On the Hausdorff dimension of CAT($\kappa$) surfaces

We prove that a closed surface with a CAT($\kappa$) metric has Hausdorff dimension = 2, and that there are uniform upper and lower bounds on the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure of small metric balls. We also discuss a connection between this uniformity condition and some results on the dynamics of the geodesic flow for such surfaces. Finally, we give a short proof of topological entropy rigidity for geodesic flow on certain CAT(-1) manifolds.

Marked length spectrum rigidity in nonpositive curvature with singularities

Combining several previously known arguments, we prove marked length spectrum rigidity for surfaces with nonpositively curved Riemannian metrics away from a finite set of cone-type singularities with cone angles $>2π$. With an additional condition, we can weaken the requirement on one metric to `no conjugate points.'

Marked length rigidity for Fuchsian buildings

We consider finite 2-complexes X that arise as quotients of Fuchsian buildings by subgroups of the combinatorial automorphism group, which we assume act freely and cocompactly. We show that locally CAT(-1) metrics on X which are piecewise hyperbolic and satisfy a natural non-singularity condition at vertices are marked length spectrum rigid within certain classes of negatively curved, piecewise Riemannian metrics on X. As a key step in our proof, we show that the marked length spectrum function for such metrics determines the volume of X.

Surface subgroups for lattices in Fuchsian buildings

We consider finite 2-dimensional polyhedral complexes, equipped with piecewise non-positively curved, locally CAT(0) metrics. We give conditions on the complex X that ensure that its fundamental group contains a surface subgroup. Concrete examples covered by our methods include compact quotients of sufficiently thick Fuchsian buildings, where the lattice acts freely and the quotient has at least two vertices.

Marked length rigidity for one dimensional spaces

We prove that for compact, non-contractible, one dimensional geodesic spaces, a version of the marked length spectrum conjecture holds. For a compact one dimensional geodesic space X, we define a subspace Conv(X). When X is non-contractible, we show that X deformation retracts to Conv(X). If two such spaces X, Y have the same marked length spectrum, we prove that Conv(X) and Conv(Y) are isometric to each other.

2-Frame flow dynamics and hyperbolic rank rigidity in nonpositive curvature

This paper presents hyperbolic rank rigidity results for rank 1, nonpositively curved spaces. Let $M$ be a compact, rank 1 manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature and suppose that along every geodesic in $M$ there is a parallel vector field making curvature $-a^2$ with the geodesic direction. We prove that $M$ has constant curvature equal to $-a^2$ if $M$ is odd dimensional, or if $M$ is even dimensional and has sectional curvature pinched as follows: $-Λ^2 < K < -λ^2$ where $λ/Λ> >.93$. When $-a^2$ is the upper curvature bound this gives a shorter proof of the hyperbolic rank rigidity theorem of Hamenstädt, subject to the pinching condition in even dimension; in all other cases it is a new result. We also present a rigidity result using only an assumption on maximal Lyapunov exponents in direct analogy with work done by Connell. The proof of the main theorem is simplified considerably by assuming strict negative curvature; in fact, in all dimensions but 7 and 8 it is then an immediate consequence of ergodicity of the $(dim(M)-1)$-frame flow. In these exceptional dimensions, recourse to the dynamics of the 2-frame flow must be made and the scheme of proof developed there can be generalized to deal with rank 1, nonpositively curved spaces.
