Thermal superpotential and thermodynamics of neutral hairy black holes in extended SUGRA

We present a family of exact neutral hairy black-hole solutions with spherical horizon topology in extended supergravity with Fayet--Iliopoulos terms. We consider a consistent dilaton truncation and analyze in detail a sector where the magnetic part of the FI terms vanishes. Using appropriate dilaton counterterms, we compute the thermodynamic quantities and show the existence of Hawking--Page phase transitions. As a holographic application, we derive the thermal superpotential in closed form and use it as a counterterm, explicitly demonstrating that no additional finite counterterms are required to regularize the Euclidean action and the quasi-local stress tensor. The dual stress tensor matches that of a thermal gas of massless particles and is consistent with mixed dilaton boundary conditions that preserve conformal symmetry.

Holographic renormalization and the variational problem for mixed boundary conditions via a solution-dependent superpotential-like function

We study holographic renormalization and the variational problem in four-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field in asymptotically AdS spacetimes with mixed, designer-gravity boundary conditions. For static black-hole solutions, we introduce a solution-dependent superpotential-like function $W(\phi)$, motivated by the Hamilton--Jacobi formulation but defined directly from the equations of motion. Focusing on the case $m^{2}L^{2}=-2$, we show that the near-boundary expansion $ W(\phi)=-\frac{4}{L}-\frac{\phi^{2}}{2L}+a\phi^{3}+\mathcal{O}(\phi^{4}) $ is not fully determined by the bulk equations. Instead, once integrable mixed boundary conditions $B=B(A)$ are imposed and the variational principle is required to be well posed, the cubic coefficient is fixed in terms of the boundary deformation. In this way, the mixed boundary condition is encoded directly in the scalar counterterm, rendering the Euclidean on-shell action finite without the need for additional scalar boundary terms. We then derive the renormalized Euclidean action and holographic stress tensor, verify the quantum-statistical relation under mixed boundary conditions, and show that $W(\phi)$ provides a natural characterization of holographic renormalization-group data in non-extremal backgrounds. Finally, we illustrate the formalism in exact asymptotically AdS black-hole solutions arising in consistent truncations, including a case where comparison with a supergravity superpotential clarifies why the RG observables are controlled by the solution-dependent function $W(\phi)$ rather than by $W_{\text{SUGRA}}$.

Exact hairy black holes asymptotically $AdS_{2+1}$

We present a family of $AdS_{2+1}$ asymptotically hairy black holes, within the context of Einstein's minimally coupled scalar field theory. We study the boundary conditions and construct the thermal superpotential. In the Euclidean section, we calculate the free energy and in the Lorentzian section, the Brown-York tensor, both regularized by two methods. Finally, we calculate the relevant thermodynamic quantities and analyze the different phases.

Anomalous changing of geodesics in hairy black holes

We study the motion of test particles and the propagation of light around neutral hairy black holes under the influence of a self-interacting real scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. The goal of the present work is to show that the time-like and null-like geodesics have an anomalous behaviour for a special range of parameters in the dense hair region, defined as $\sqrt{\Omega(x_{h})}\leq r\leq 2MG_{N}/c^{2}$.

Holography of AdS Hairy Black Holes and Cardy-Verlinde Formula

We discuss some aspects related to holography of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) dyonic hairy black holes, which break the conformal symetry of the boundary. We use counterterms for the scalar field that satisfies mixed boundary conditions to compute the Euclidean action and dual stress tensor. We apply these results to show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula is not satisfied. However, when the magnetic (or electric) charge vanishes, the conformal symmetry is preserved and the entropy of the black hole can be put in the Cardy-Verlinde form. In our analysis, there is no need of adding extra finite counterterms and, in this particular case, we explicitly show that our results match the ones obtained from using the superpotential as a counterterm.

Exact holographic RG flows in extended SUGRA

We present a family of exact planar hairy neutral black hole solutions in extended supergravity with Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms. We consider a model where the magnetic part of FI sector vanishes and obtain the superpotential at finite temperature in analytic form. Then, we discuss the thermodynamics and some holographic properties of these solutions. We regularize the action by two different methods, one with gravitational and scalar counterterms and the other using the thermal superpotential as a counterterm, and compute the holographic stress tensor. We also construct the $c$-function of the corresponding RG flow and obtain an exact holographic $\beta$-function for this model.

Phase transitions of neutral planar hairy AdS black holes

We investigate the phase diagram of a general class of $4$-dimensional exact regular hairy planar black holes. For some particular values of the parameters in the moduli potential, these solutions can be embedded in $\omega$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=8$ gauged supergravity. We construct the hairy soliton that is the ground state of the theory and show that there exist first order phase transitions.

Thermodynamically stable asymptotically flat hairy black holes with a dilaton potential

We present a detailed analysis of the thermodynamics of exact asymptotically flat hairy black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We compute the regularized action, quasilocal stress tensor, and conserved charges by using a `counterterm method' similar to the one extensively used in the AdS-CFT duality. In the presence of a non-trivial dilaton potential that vanishes at the boundary we prove that, for some range of parameters, there exist thermodynamically stable black holes in the grand canonical and canonical ensembles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a thermodynamically stable asymptotically flat black hole, without imposing artificial conditions corresponding to embedding in a finite box.

Scalar charges and the first law of black hole thermodynamics

We present a variational formulation of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in flat spacetime, when the asymptotic value of the scalar field is not fixed. We obtain the boundary terms that make the variational principle well posed and then compute the finite gravitational action and corresponding Brown-York stress tensor. We show that the total energy has a new contribution that depends of the asymptotic value of the scalar field and discuss the role of scalar charges for the first law of thermodynamics. We also extend our analysis to hairy black holes in Anti-de Sitter spacetime and investigate the thermodynamics of an exact solution that breaks the conformal symmetry of the boundary.

Periapsis shift and deflection of light by hairy black holes

We investigate the orbit equations and the eikonal equation for light respectively, under influence of the hairy black holes (asymptotically flat) in four dimensions. We consider two hairy black hole solutions with non-trivial potentials, and one of these solutions has Schwarzschild case as a smooth limit. Following to Landau and Lifshitz, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method, and we show hairy corrections for periapsis shift, where the effect of the hair is to increase it. In the same way, using the eikonal equation we show the deflection of the light and the relevant scalar hair corrections. Interestingly we find that the hair screening the gravitational field, decreasing the angle of deflection as the hair increases.

Hairy AdS Solitons

We construct exact hairy AdS soliton solutions in Einstein-dilaton gravity theory. We examine their thermodynamic properties and discuss the role of these solutions for the existence of first order phase transitions for hairy black holes. The negative energy density associated to hairy AdS solitons can be interpreted as the Casimir energy that is generated in the dual filed theory when the fermions are antiperiodic on the compact coordinate.

Trace Anomaly and Counterterms in Designer Gravity

We construct concrete counterterms of the Balasubramanian-Kraus type for Einstein-scalar theories with designer gravity boundary conditions in AdS$_{4}$, so that the total action is finite on-shell and satisfy a well defined variational principle for an arbitrary scalar field potential. We focus on scalar fields with the conformal mass, $m^{2}=-2l^{-2}$, and show that the holographic mass matches the Hamiltonian mass for any boundary conditions. We compute the trace anomaly of the dual field theory in the generic case, as well as when there exist logarithmic branches of non-linear origin. As expected, the anomaly vanishes for the boundary conditions that are AdS invariant. When the anomaly does not vanish, the dual stress tensor describes a thermal gas with an equation of state related to the boundary conditions of the scalar field. When the anomaly vanishes, we recover the dual theory of a massless thermal gas. As an application of the formalism, we consider a general family of exact hairy black hole solutions that, for some particular values of the parameters in the moduli potential, contains solutions of four-dimensional gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity and its $\omega$-deformation. Using the AdS/CFT duality dictionary, they correspond to triple trace deformations of the dual field theory.

On the thermodynamics of hairy black holes

We investigate the thermodynamics of a general class of exact 4-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter hairy black hole solutions and show that, for a fixed temperature, there are small and large hairy black holes similar to the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. The large black holes have positive specific heat and so they can be in equilibrium with a thermal bath of radiation at the Hawking temperature. The relevant thermodynamic quantities are computed by using the Hamiltonian formalism and counterterm method. We explicitly show that there are first order phase transitions similar to the Hawking-Page phase transition.
