How smooth can the convex hull of a L\'evy path be?

We describe the rate of growth of the derivative $C'$ of the convex minorant of a L\'evy path at times where $C'$ increases continuously. Since the convex minorant is piecewise linear, $C'$ may exhibit such behaviour either at the vertex time $\tau_s$ of finite slope $s=C'_{\tau_s}$ or at time $0$ where the slope is $-\infty$. While the convex hull depends on the entire path, we show that the local fluctuations of the derivative $C'$ depend only on the fine structure of the small jumps of the L\'evy process and are the same for all time horizons. In the domain of attraction of a stable process, we establish sharp results essentially characterising the modulus of continuity of $C'$ up to sub-logarithmic factors. As a corollary we obtain novel results for the growth rate at $0$ of meanders in a wide class of L\'evy processes.

When is the convex hull of a L\'evy path smooth?

We characterise, in terms of their transition laws, the class of one-dimensional L\'evy processes whose graph has a continuously differentiable (planar) convex hull. We show that this phenomenon is exhibited by a broad class of infinite variation L\'evy processes and depends subtly on the behaviour of the L\'evy measure at zero. We introduce a class of strongly eroded L\'evy processes, whose Dini derivatives vanish at every local minimum of the trajectory for all perturbations with a linear drift, and prove that these are precisely the processes with smooth convex hulls. We study how the smoothness of the convex hull can break and construct examples exhibiting a variety of smooth/non-smooth behaviours. Finally, we conjecture that an infinite variation L\'evy process is either strongly eroded or abrupt, a claim implied by Vigon's point-hitting conjecture. In the finite variation case, we characterise the points of smoothness of the hull in terms of the L\'evy measure.

Asymptotic shape of the concave majorant of a L\'evy process

We establish distributional limit theorems for the shape statistics of a concave majorant (i.e. the fluctuations of its length, its supremum, the time it is attained and its value at $T$) of any L\'evy process on $[0,T]$ as $T\to\infty$. The scale of the fluctuations of the length and other statistics, as well as their asymptotic dependence, vary significantly with the tail behaviour of the L\'evy measure. The key tool in the proofs is the recent representation of the concave majorant for all L\'evy processes using a stick-breaking representation.

A Gaussian approximation theorem for L\'evy processes

Without higher moment assumptions, this note establishes the decay of the Kolmogorov distance in a central limit theorem for L\'evy processes. This theorem can be viewed as a continuous-time extension of the classical random walk result by Friedman, Katz and Koopmans.
