Upgoing ANITA events as evidence of the CPT symmetric universe

We explain the two upgoing ultra-high energy shower events observed by ANITA as arising from the decay in the Earth's interior of the quasi-stable dark matter candidate in the CPT symmetric universe. The dark matter particle is a 480 PeV right-handed neutrino that decays into a Higgs boson and a light Majorana neutrino. The latter interacts in the Earth's crust to produce a tau lepton that in turn initiates an atmospheric upgoing shower. The fact that both events emerge at the same angle from the Antarctic ice-cap suggests an atypical dark matter density distribution in the Earth.

Light scalar dark matter at neutrino oscillation experiments

Couplings between light scalar dark matter (DM) and neutrinos induce a perturbation to the neutrino mass matrix. If the DM oscillation period is smaller than ten minutes (or equivalently, the DM particle is heavier than $0.69\times10^{-17}$ eV), the fast-averaging over an oscillation cycle leads to a modification of the measured oscillation parameters. We present a specific $μ-τ$ symmetric model in which the measured value of $θ_{13}$ is entirely generated by the DM interaction, and which reproduces the other measured oscillation parameters. For a scalar DM particle lighter than $10^{-15}$ eV, adiabatic solar neutrino propagation is maintained. A suppression of the sensitivity to CP violation at long-baseline neutrino experiments is predicted in this model. We find that DUNE cannot exclude the DM scenario at more than $3σ$ C.L. for bimaximal, tribimaximal and hexagonal mixing, while JUNO can rule it out at more than $6σ$ C.L. by precisely measuring both $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{13}$.

Directly detecting Isospin-Violating Dark Matter

We consider the prospects for multiple dark matter direct detection experiments to determine if the interactions of a dark matter candidate are isospin-violating. We focus on theoretically well-motivated examples of isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM), including models in which dark matter interactions with nuclei are mediated by a dark photon, a Z, or a squark. We determine that the best prospects for distinguishing IVDM from the isospin-invariant scenario arise in the cases of dark photon- or Z-mediated interactions, and that the ideal experimental scenario would consist of large exposure xenon- and neon-based detectors. If such models just evade current direct detection limits, then one could distinguish such models from the standard isospin-invariant case with two detectors with of order 100 ton-year exposure.

IceCube's astrophysical neutrino energy spectrum from CPT violation

The 6-year dataset of high-energy starting events (HESE) at IceCube indicates a spectrum of astrophysical neutrinos much softer than expected from the Fermi shock acceleration mechanism. On the other hand, IceCube's up-going muon neutrino dataset and Fermi-LAT's gamma-ray spectrum point to an $E^{-2}$ neutrino spectrum. If the HESE data above 200 TeV are fit with the latter flux, an excess at lower energies ensues, which then suggests a multicomponent spectrum. We show that the HESE dataset can be explained by a single $E^{-2}$ power-law neutrino flux from a muon-damped $pγ$ source if neutrino interactions are modified by CPT violation. The low-energy excess is naturally explained by the pileup of events from superluminal neutrino decay, and there is no cutoff at high energies due to the contribution of subluminal antineutrinos. The best-fit scenario with CPT violation also predicts the observation of Glashow resonance events in the near future.

COHERENT constraints on nonstandard neutrino interactions

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering consistent with the standard model has been observed by the COHERENT experiment. We study nonstandard neutrino interactions using the detected spectrum. For the case in which the nonstandard interactions (NSI) are induced by a vector mediator lighter than 50 MeV, we obtain constraints on the coupling of the mediator. For a heavier mediator, we find that degeneracies between the NSI parameters severely weaken the constraints. However, these degeneracies do not affect COHERENT constraints on the effective NSI parameters for matter propagation in the Earth.

The Galactic Contribution to IceCube's Astrophysical Neutrino Flux

High energy neutrinos have been detected by IceCube, but their origin remains a mystery. Determining the sources of this flux is a crucial first step towards multi-messenger studies. In this work we systematically compare two classes of sources with the data: Galactic and extragalactic. We assume that the neutrino sources are distributed according to a class of Galactic models. We build a likelihood function on an event by event basis including energy, event topology, absorption, and direction information. We present the probability that each high energy event with deposited energy $E_{\rm dep}>60$ TeV in the HESE sample is Galactic, extragalactic, or background. For Galactic models considered the Galactic fraction of the astrophysical flux has a best fit value of $1.3\%$ and is $<9.5\%$ at 90\% CL. A zero Galactic flux is allowed at $<1σ$.

A light $Z^\prime$ for the $R_K$ puzzle and nonstandard neutrino interactions

We show that the $R_K$ puzzle in LHCb data and the discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon can be simultaneously explained if a 10 MeV mass $Z^\prime$ boson couples to the muon but not the electron, and that clear evidence of the nonstandard matter interactions of neutrinos induced by this coupling may be found at DUNE.

Nonstandard interactions in solar neutrino oscillations with Hyper-Kamiokande and JUNO

Measurements of the solar neutrino mass-squared difference from KamLAND and solar neutrino data are somewhat discrepant, perhaps due to nonstandard neutrino interactions in matter. We show that the zenith angle distribution of solar neutrinos at Hyper-Kamiokande and the energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos at JUNO can conclusively confirm the discrepancy and detect new neutrino interactions.

Nonmaximal neutrino mixing at NO$ν$A from nonstandard interactions

Muon neutrino disappearance measurements at NO$ν$A suggest that maximal $θ_{23}$ is excluded at the 2.6$σ$ CL. This is in mild tension with T2K data which prefer maximal mixing. Considering that NO$ν$A has a much longer baseline than T2K, we point out that the apparent departure from maximal mixing in NO$ν$A may be a consequence of nonstandard neutrino propagation in matter.

Nonstandard neutrino interactions at DUNE, T2HK and T2HKK

We study the matter effect caused by nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) in the next generation long-baseline neutrino experiments, DUNE, T2HK and T2HKK. If multiple NSI parameters are nonzero, the potential of these experiments to detect CP violation, determine the mass hierarchy and constrain NSI is severely impaired by degeneracies between the NSI parameters and by the generalized mass hierarchy degeneracy. In particular, a cancellation between leading order terms in the appearance channels when $ε_{eτ} = \cotθ_{23} ε_{eμ}$, strongly affects the sensitivities to these two NSI parameters at T2HK and T2HKK. We also study the dependence of the sensitivities on the true CP phase $δ$ and the true mass hierarchy, and find that overall DUNE has the best sensitivity to the magnitude of the NSI parameters, while T2HKK has the best sensitivity to CP violation whether or not there are NSI. Furthermore, for T2HKK a smaller off-axis angle for the Korean detector is better overall. We find that due to the structure of the leading order terms in the appearance channel probabilities, the NSI sensitivities in a given experiment are similar for both mass hierarchies, modulo the phase change $δ\to δ+ 180^\circ$.

Vector dark matter annihilation with internal bremsstrahlung

We consider scenarios in which the annihilation of self-conjugate spin-1 dark matter to a Standard Model fermion-antifermion final state is chirality suppressed, but where this suppression can be lifted by the emission of an additional photon via internal bremsstrahlung. We find that this scenario can only arise if the initial dark matter state is polarized, which can occur in the context of self-interacting dark matter. In particular, this is possible if the dark matter pair forms a bound state that decays to its ground state before the constituents annihilate. We show that the shape of the resulting photon spectrum is the same as for self-conjugate spin-0 and spin-1/2 dark matter, but the normalization is less heavily suppressed in the limit of heavy mediators.

IceCube neutrinos, decaying dark matter, and the Hubble constant

Cosmological parameters deduced from the Planck measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background are at some tension with direct astronomical measurements of various parameters at low redshifts. Very recently, it has been conjectured that this discrepancy can be reconciled if a certain fraction of dark matter is unstable and decays between recombination and the present epoch. Herein we show that if the superheavy relics have a branching into neutrinos B (X \to ν\bar ν) \sim 3 \times 10^{-9}, then this scenario can also accommodate the recently discovered extraterrestrial flux of neutrinos, relaxing the tension between IceCube results and Fermi LAT data. The model is fully predictive and can be confronted with future IceCube data. We demonstrate that in 10 years of observation IceCube will be able to distinguish the mono-energetic signal from X decay at the 3σlevel. In a few years of data taking with the upgraded IceCube-Gen2 enough statistics will be gathered to elucidate the dark matter--neutrino connection at the 5σlevel.

Impact of nonstandard interactions on sterile neutrino searches at IceCube

We analyze the energy and zenith angle distributions of the latest 2-year IceCube dataset of upward going atmospheric neutrinos to constrain sterile neutrinos at the eV scale in the 3+1 scenario. We find that the parameters favored by a combination of LSND and MiniBooNE data are excluded at more than the 99% C.L. We explore the impact of nonstandard matter interactions on this exclusion, and find that the exclusion holds for nonstandard interactions (NSI) that are within the stringent model-dependent bounds set by collider and neutrino scattering experiments. However, for large NSI parameters subject only to model-independent bounds from neutrino oscillation experiments, the LSND and MiniBooNE data are consistent with IceCube.

Degeneracies in long-baseline neutrino experiments from nonstandard interactions

We study parameter degeneracies that can occur in long-baseline neutrino appearance experiments due to nonstandard interactions (NSI) in neutrino propagation. For a single off-diagonal NSI parameter, and neutrino and antineutrino measurements at a single L/E, there exists a continuous four-fold degeneracy (related to the mass hierarchy and $θ_{23}$ octant) that renders the mass hierarchy, octant, and CP phase unknowable. Even with a combination of NO$ν$A and T2K data, which in principle can resolve the degeneracy, both NSI and the CP phase remain unconstrained because of experimental uncertainties. A wide-band beam experiment like DUNE will resolve this degeneracy if the nonzero off-diagonal NSI parameter is $ε_{eμ}$. If $ε_{eτ}$ is nonzero, or the diagonal NSI parameter $ε_{ee}$ is O(1), a wrong determination of the mass hierarchy and of CP violation can occur at DUNE. The octant degeneracy can be further complicated by $ε_{eτ}$, but is not affected by $ε_{ee}$.

Dark matter annihilation with s-channel internal Higgsstrahlung

We study the scenario of fermionic dark matter that annihilates to standard model fermions through an s-channel axial vector mediator. We point out that the well-known chirality suppression of the annihilation cross section can be alleviated by s-channel internal Higgsstrahlung. The shapes of the cosmic ray spectra are identical to that of t-channel internal Higgsstrahlung in the limit of a heavy mediating particle. Unlike the general case of t-channel bremsstrahlung, s-channel Higgsstrahlung can be the dominant annihilation process even for Dirac dark matter. Since the s-channel mediator can be a standard model singlet, collider searches for the mediator are easily circumvented.

Optimal configurations of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

We perform a comprehensive study of the ability of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to answer outstanding questions in the neutrino sector. We consider the sensitivities to the mass hierarchy, the octant of θ_{23} and to CP violation using data from beam and atmospheric neutrinos. We evaluate the dependencies on the precision with which θ_{13} will be measured by reactor experiments, on the detector size, beam power and exposure time, on detector magnetization, and on the systematic uncertainties achievable with and without a near detector. We find that a 35 kt far detector in DUNE with a near detector will resolve the eight-fold degeneracy that is intrinsic to long baseline experiments and will meet the primary goals of oscillation physics that it is designed for.

Vector dark matter at the LHC

We consider monojet searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for spin-1 dark matter that interacts with quarks through a contact operator. If the dark matter particles are produced with longitudinal polarizations, then the production matrix element is enhanced by factors of the energy. We show that this particularly effective search strategy can test models for which the energy suppression scale of the operator is as large as 10^5 TeV. As such, these searches can probe a large class of models for which the contact-operator approximation is valid. We find that for contact operators that permit velocity-independent dark matter-nucleon scattering, LHC monojet searches for spin-1 dark matter are competitive with or far surpass direct-detection searches depending on whether the scattering is spin independent or spin dependent, respectively.

Matrix element analyses of dark matter scattering and annihilation

We provide a compendium of results at the level of matrix elements for a systematic study of dark matter scattering and annihilation. We identify interactions that yield spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering and specify whether the interactions are velocity- and/or momentum-suppressed. We identify the interactions that lead to s-wave or p-wave annihilation, and those that are chirality-suppressed. We also list the interaction structures that can interfere in scattering and annihilation processes. Using these results, we point out situations in which deviations from the standard lore are obtained.
