A model structure for cartesian 2-fibrations

Cartesian 2-fibrations provide a way to understand indexed categories, but their classical ``straightening'' construction requires several layers of weak coherence data. This paper develops a homotopical framework that replaces much of this bookkeeping with a fully strict model. By using marked 2-categories to record the cartesian morphisms and 2-cells, we construct a model structure whose fibrant objects are precisely the cartesian 2-fibrations over a fixed 2-category $\mathcal{C}$. We then show that the marked Grothendieck construction identifies these 2-fibrations, up to weak equivalence, with strict 2-functors from $\mathcal{C}$ into $2\mathrm{Cat}$. As an additional contribution, we construct localizations of 2-categories that simultaneously invert selected morphisms and 2-cells.

Mutual Influence of Symmetries and Topological Field Theories

We study how the fusion 2-category symmetry of a fermionic (2+1)d QFT can be affected when one allows for stacking with TQFTs to be an equivalence relation for QFTs. Focusing on a simple kind of fermionic fusion 2-category described purely by group theoretical data, our results reveal that by allowing for stacking with $\mathrm{Spin}(n)_1$ as an equivalence relation enables a finite set of inequivalent modifications to the original fusion 2-categorical-symmetry. To put our results in a broader context, we relate the order of the symmetry modifications to the image of a map between groups of minimal nondegenerate extensions, and to the tangential structure set by the initial categorical symmetry on the background manifold for the QFT.

Higher tensor categories and their extensions: notes from the Scottish Talbot On Algebra and Topology

These lecture notes are the product of a week-long learning workshop on the work of Johnson-Freyd and Reutter on the problem of the existence of minimal nondegenerate extensions of braided fusion categories (arXiv:2105.15167). They recount the mathematical arguments of the original paper from an expository angle, with background material covering the algebra and homotopy theory required to understand the statement and follow the proof. The notes are aimed at newcomers to the field of (braided) fusion 1- and 2-categories.

Complexity and Floquet dynamics: non-equilibrium Ising phase transitions

We study the time-dependent circuit complexity of the periodically driven transverse field Ising model using Nielsen's geometric approach. In the high-frequency driving limit the system is known to exhibit non-equilibrium phase transitions governed by the amplitude of the driving field. We analytically compute the complexity in this regime and show that it clearly distinguishes between the different phases, exhibiting a universal linear behavior at early times. We also evaluate the time averaged complexity, provide evidence of non-analytic behavior at the critical points, and discuss its origin. Finally, we comment on the freezing of quantum dynamics at specific configurations and on the use of complexity as a new tool to understand quantum phase transitions in Floquet systems.

Maximally entangling states and dynamics in one dimensional nearest neighbor Floquet systems

We describe conditions for generating entanglement between two regions at the optimal rate in a class of one-dimensional quantum circuits with Floquet dynamics. The optimal value follows from subadditivity and Araki-Lieb inequalities. A quantum circuit composed of parallel SWAP gates that act periodically on entangled pairs is a simple system that saturates the bound. We show that any other system that entangles at this maximal rate must act as a generalized SWAP gate dynamics on the relevant states of the Hilbert space. We further discuss some characterizations of states according to entropy generation. States with multipartite entanglement generically fail to entangle efficiently as time evolves. This suggests that chaos, which tend to produce such entanglement patterns, is expected to work against the process of spreading information efficiently. It also provides a simple intuition for why the entangling tsunami velocity must be slower than the Lieb-Robinson velocity.

Existence and Classification of Pseudo-Asymptotic Solutions for Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff Systems

The Tolman--Oppenheimer--Volkoff (TOV) equations are a partially uncoupled system of nonlinear and non-autonomous ordinary differential equations which describe the structure of isotropic spherically symmetric static fluids. Nonlinearity makes finding explicit solutions of TOV systems very difficult and such solutions and very rare. In this paper we introduce the notion of pseudo-asymptotic TOV systems and we show that the space of such systems is at least fifteen-dimensional. We also show that if the system is defined in a suitable domain (meaning the extended real line), then well-behaved pseudo-asymptotic TOV systems are genuine TOV systems in that domain, ensuring the existence of new fourteen analytic solutions for extended TOV equations. The solutions are classified according to the nature of the matter (ordinary or exotic) and to the existence of cavities and singularities. It is shown that at least three of them are realistic, in the sense that they are formed only by ordinary matter and contain no cavities or singularities.

Supersymmetric Many-Body Systems from Partial Symmetries: Integrability, Localization and Scrambling

Partial symmetries are described by generalized group structures known as symmetric inverse semigroups. We use the algebras arising from these structures to realize supersymmetry in (0+1) dimensions and to build many-body quantum systems on a chain. This construction consists in associating appropriate supercharges to chain sites, in analogy to what is done in spin chains. For simple enough choices of supercharges, we show that the resulting states have a finite non-zero Witten index, which is invariant under perturbations, therefore defining supersymmetric phases of matter protected by the index. The Hamiltonians we obtain are integrable and display a spectrum containing both product and entangled states. By introducing disorder and studying the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC), we find that these systems are in the many-body localized phase and do not thermalize. Finally, we reformulate a theorem relating the growth of the second Renyi entropy to the OTOC on a thermal state in terms of partial symmetries.
