The weak-type (1,1) bound for the Hardy--Littlewood maximal function is $O(\sqrt{n} \log n)$

We prove a weak-type $(1,1)$ estimate for the centered Hardy--Littlewood maximal function with respect to Euclidean balls with dimensional dependence $O(\sqrt{n} \log n)$. This improves the order of growth in the classical $O(n)$ estimate of Stein and Str\"omberg. The proof goes through a pointwise bound of the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator by the heat maximal operator with $\sqrt{n}$ loss. The key technical aspect of our result is an improvement of the weak-type bound for the heat maximal operator from $O(\sqrt{n})$ to $O(\log n)$.

A dimension-free weak-type $(1,1)$ bound for the vector Riesz transform on $\mathbb{R}^n$

We show that the best constant in the weak-type $(1,1)$ bound for the vector Riesz transform on $\mathbb{R}^n$ is at most $2$, independent of the dimension $n$. The proof relies on a new decomposition of the input data involving an obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian and an associated Lewy-Stampacchia type estimate on an unbounded domain. This settles a problem posed by E. M. Stein at the 1986 International Congress of Mathematicians.

Potential Estimates and Hodge Systems with $L^1$ data on compact manifolds

In this paper we establish optimal Lorentz estimates for the Riesz potentials acting on closed or co-closed $k$-forms of finite mass on a smooth, compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$: For $\alpha \in (0,n)$ and $k=1,\ldots,n-1$, there exists a constant $C>0$ such that \begin{align*} \| \mathcal{I}_{\alpha,k} F \|_{L^{n/(n-\alpha),1}(\Lambda^k)} \leq C \| F\|_{L^1(\Lambda^k)} \end{align*} for all $k$-forms $F \in L^1(\Lambda^k)$ orthogonal to the space of harmonic $k$-forms and satisfying $\mathrm{d} F=0$ or $\mathrm{d}^* F=0$. We show how this inequality implies analogous Lorentz bounds for solutions of the $k$-form Poisson equation and for the Hodge system with data having finite mass. These results include as a special case the div--curl system on the $3$-dimensional torus, where we answer an open question originally posed by J. Bourgain and H. Brezis.

Boundary estimates for the fractional spherical maximal function

In this article, we study the fractional spherical maximal function and its lacunary counterpart. We study the necessary and sufficient conditions for $L^p-L^q$ boundedness of both maximal functions. In particular, we prove the restricted weak type estimate for both full and lacunary fractional spherical maximal functions at the boundary of the maximal $L^p-L^q$ bounded regions.

Estimates for the wave equation on $\beta$-dimensional spaces of measures

In this paper, we establish Miyachi-Peral-type fixed-time estimates for wave multipliers acting on $\beta$-dimension stable spaces of measures. Our estimates give a refinement of known estimates for the Hardy space. From these bounds, we deduce corresponding estimates for the wave equation with measure data.

An atomic decomposition for functions of bounded variation

In this paper, we give a decomposition of the gradient measure $Du$ of an arbitrary function of bounded variation $u$ into a sum of atoms $\mu=D\chi_{F}$, where $F$ is a set of finite perimeter. The atoms further satisfy the support, cancellation, normalization, and size conditions: For each $\mu$, there exists a cube $Q$ such that $\operatorname*{supp}\mu\subset Q$, $\mu(Q)=0$, $|\mu|(Q)\leq 1$, and, denoting by $p_t$ the heat kernel in $\mathbb{R}^d$, \[ \sup_{x \in \mathbb{R}^d, t>0} |t^{1/2} p_t \ast \mu (x)| \leq \frac{1}{l(Q)^{d-1}}. \] Our proof relies on a sampling of the coarea formula and a new boxing identity. We present several consequences of this result, including Sobolev inequalities, dimension estimates, and trace inequalities.

On the Fourier transform of measures in Besov spaces

We prove quantitative estimates for the decay of the Fourier transform of the Riesz potential of measures that are in homogeneous Besov spaces of negative exponent: \begin{align*} \|\widehat{I_{\alpha}\mu}\|_{L^{p, \infty}} \leq C \|\mu\|_{M_b}^{\frac{1}{2}}\left(\sup_{t>0} t^{\frac{d-\beta}{2}}\|p_{t}\ast \mu\|_{\infty}\right)^{\frac{1}{2}}, \end{align*} where $p=\frac{2d}{2\alpha+\beta}$ with $\beta \in (0,d)$ and $I_\alpha \mu$ is the Riesz potential of $\mu$ of order $\alpha \in ((d-\beta)/2,d-\beta/2)$. Our results are naturally applicable to the Morrey space $\mathcal{M}^{\beta}$, including for example the Frostman measure $\mu_K$ of any compact set $K$ with $0<\mathcal{H}^\beta(K)<+\infty$ for some $\beta \in (0,d]$. When $\mu=D\chi_E$ for $\chi_E \in \operatorname*{BV}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $\alpha =1$, and $\beta=d-1$, our results extend the work of Herz and Ko--Lee. We provide examples which show the sharpness of our results.

An atomic decomposition of one-dimensional metric currents without boundary

This paper proves an atomic decomposition of the space of $1$-dimensional metric currents without boundary, in which the atoms are specified by closed Lipschitz curves with uniform control on their Morrey norms. Our argument relies on a geometric construction which states that for any $\epsilon>0$ one can express a piecewise-geodesic closed curve as the sum of piecewise-geodesic closed curves whose total length is at most $(1+\epsilon)$ times the original length and whose Morrey norms are each bounded by a universal constant times $\epsilon^{-2}$. In Euclidean space, our results refine the state of the art, providing an approximation of divergence free measures by limits of sums of closed polygonal paths whose total length can be made arbitrarily close to the norm of the approximated measure.

The Capacitary John-Nirenberg Inequality Revisited

In this paper, we establish maximal function estimates, Lebesgue differentiation theory, Calder\'on-Zygmund decompositions, and John-Nirenberg inequalities for translation invariant Hausdorff contents. We further identify a key structural component of these results -- a packing condition satisfied by these Hausdorff contents which compensates for the non-linearity of the capacitary integrals. We prove that for any outer capacity, this packing condition is satisfied if and only if the capacity is equivalent to its induced Hausdorff content. Finally, we use this equivalence to extend the preceding theory to general outer capacities which are assumed to satisfy this packing condition.

Sobolev inequalities for canceling operators

Sobolev type inequalities involving homogeneous elliptic canceling differential operators and rearrangement-invariant norms on the Euclidean space are considered. They are characterized via considerably simpler one-dimensional Hardy type inequalities. As a consequence, they are shown to hold exactly for the same norms as their counterparts depending on the standard gradient operator of the same order. The results offered provide a unified framework for the theory of Sobolev embeddings for the elliptic canceling operators. They build upon and incorporate earlier fundamental contributions dealing with the endpoint case of $L^1$-norms. They also include previously available results for the symmetric gradient, a prominent instance of an elliptic canceling operator. In particular, the optimal rearrangement-invariant target norm associated with any given domain norm in a Sobolev inequality for any elliptic canceling operator is exhibited. Its explicit form is detected for specific families of rearrangement-invariant spaces, such as the Orlicz spaces and the Lorentz-Zygmund spaces. Especially relevant instances of inequalities for domain spaces neighboring $L^1$ are singled out.

On sharp constants in higher order Adams-Cianchi inequalities

The main results of this paper are the establishment of sharp constants for several families of critical Sobolev embeddings. These inequalities were pioneered by David R. Adams, while the sharp constant in the first order case is due to Andrea Cianchi. We also prove a trace improvement of an inequality obtained independently by K. Hansson and H. Brezis and S. Wainger.

A sparse resolution of the DiPerna-Majda gap problem for $2$D Euler equations

A central question which originates in the celebrated work in the 1980's of DiPerna and Majda asks what is the optimal decay $f > 0$ such that uniform rates $|\omega|(Q) \leq f(|Q|)$ of the vorticity maximal functions guarantee strong convergence without concentrations of approximate solutions to energy-conserving weak solutions of the $2$D Euler equations with vortex sheet initial data. A famous result of Majda (1993) shows $f(r) = [\log (1/r)]^{-1/2}$, $r<1/2$, as the optimal decay for \emph{distinguished} sign vortex sheets. In the general setting of \emph{mixed} sign vortex sheets, DiPerna and Majda (1987) established $f(r) = [\log (1/r)]^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha > 1$ as a sufficient condition for the lack of concentrations, while the expected gap $\alpha \in (1/2, 1]$ remains as an open question. In this paper we resolve the DiPerna-Majda $2$D gap problem: In striking contrast to the well-known case of distinguished sign vortex sheets, we identify $f(r) = [\log (1/r)]^{-1}$ as the optimal regularity for mixed sign vortex sheets that rules out concentrations. For the proof, we propose a novel method to construct explicitly solutions with mixed sign to the $2$D Euler equations in such a way that wild behaviour creates within the relevant geometry of \emph{sparse} cubes (i.e., these cubes are not necessarily pairwise disjoint, but their possible overlappings can be controlled in a sharp fashion). Such a strategy is inspired by the recent work of the first author and Milman \cite{DM} where strong connections between energy conservation and sparseness are established.

$BMO$ and gradient estimates for solutions of critical elliptic equations

In this paper we explore several applications of the recently introduced spaces of functions of bounded $\beta$-dimensional mean oscillation for $\beta \in (0,n]$ to regularity theory of critical exponent elliptic equations. We first show that functions with gradient in weak-$L^n$ are in $BMO^\beta$ for any $\beta \in (0,n]$, improving the classical result $\nabla u\in L^n$ implies $u\in BMO$. We apply this result to the Poisson equation $-\Delta u = \operatorname*{div} F$ with zero boundary conditions in a bounded $C^1$ domain to show that $u\in BMO^{\beta}$ when $F$ is in weak-$L^n$. Next, we consider the $n$-Laplace equation \begin{align*} -\operatorname*{div}( |\nabla U|^{n-2} \nabla U) &= F \text{ in } \Omega, \newline U &=0 \text{ on }\partial \Omega. \end{align*} with $F\in L^1(\Omega)$ and show that the classical result $u\in BMO$ can be improved to $u\in BMO^\beta$. Finally, we consider the $n$-Laplace equation in the case when $F \in L^1$, $\operatorname*{div} F=0$ and prove that for smooth domains $\Omega$ we have the estimate \begin{align*} \|\nabla U \|_{L^n} \mathbb \leq C \, \|F\|^{1/(n-1)}_{L^1}, \end{align*} where the constant $C$ is independent of $F$.

Potential trace inequalities via a Calder\'on-type theorem

In this paper we develop a general theoretical tool for the establishment of the boundedness of notoriously difficult operators (such as potentials) on certain specific types of rearrangement-invariant function spaces from analogous properties of operators that are easier to handle (such as fractional maximal operators). A principal example of the new results one obtains by our analysis is the following inequality, which generalizes a result of Korobkov and Kristensen (who had treated the case $\mu=\mathcal{L}^n$, the Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$): There exists a constant $C>0$ such that \[\int_{\mathbb{R}^n} |I_\alpha^\mu f|^p d\nu \leq C \|f\|_{L^{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^n,\mu)}^p\] for all $f$ in the Lorentz space $L^{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^n,\mu)$, where $\mu, \nu$ are Radon measures such that \[\sup_{Q} \frac{\mu(Q)}{l(Q)^{d}} < \infty \quad \text{and} \quad \sup_{\mu(Q)>0} \frac{\nu(Q)}{\quad\mu(Q)^{1-\frac{\alpha p}{d}}} < \infty,\] and $I_\alpha^\mu$ is the Riesz potential defined with respect to $\mu$ of order $\alpha \in (0,d)$. More broadly, we obtain inequalities in this spirit in the context of rearrangement-invariant spaces through a result of independent interest, an extension of an interpolation theorem of Calder\'on where the target space in one endpoint is a space of bounded functions.

On dimension stable spaces of measures

In this paper, we define spaces of measures $DS_\beta(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with dimensional stability $\beta \in (0,d)$. These spaces bridge between $M_b(\mathbb{R}^d)$, the space of finite Radon measures, and $DS_d(\mathbb{R}^d)= \mathrm{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, the real Hardy space. We show the spaces $DS_\beta(\mathbb{R}^d)$ support Sobolev inequalities for $\beta \in (0,d]$, while for any $\beta \in [0,d]$ we show that the lower Hausdorff dimension of an element of $DS_\beta(\mathbb{R}^d)$ is at least $\beta$.

On the Trace of $\dot{W}_{a}^{m+1,1}(\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n+1})$

In this paper we prove extension results for functions in Besov spaces. Our results are new in the homogeneous setting, while our technique applies equally in the inhomogeneous setting to obtain new proofs of classical results. While our results include $p>1$, of principle interest is the case $p=1$, where we show that \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n+1}}t^{a}|\nabla^{m+1}u(x,t)|\;dtdx\lesssim\left\vert f\right\vert _{B^{m-a,1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})} \end{equation*} for all $f \in \dot{B}^{m-a,1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ (the homogeneous Besov space) where $u$ is a suitably scaled heat extension of $f$.

Capacitary Maximal Inequalities and Applications

In this paper we introduce capacitary analogues of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, \begin{align*} \mathcal{M}_C(f)(x):= \sup_{r>0} \frac{1}{C(B(x,r))} \int_{B(x,r)} |f|\;dC, \end{align*} for $C=$ the Hausdorff content or a Riesz capacity. For these maximal functions, we prove a strong-type $(p,p)$ bound for $1<p \leq+\infty$ on the capacitary integration spaces $L^p(C)$ and a weak-type $(1,1)$ bound on the capacitary integration space $L^1(C)$. We show how these estimates clarify and improve the existing literature concerning maximal function estimates on capacitary integration spaces. As a consequence, we deduce correspondingly stronger differentiation theorems of Lebesgue-type, which in turn, by classical capacitary inequalities, yield more precise estimates concerning Lebesgue points for functions in Sobolev spaces.

Some Remarks on Capacitary Integrals and Measure Theory

We present results for Choquet integrals with minimal assumptions on the monotone set function through which they are defined. They include the equivalence of sublinearity and strong subadditivity independent of regularity assumptions on the capacity, as well as various forms of standard measure theoretic convergence theorems for these non-additive integrals, e.g. Fatou's lemma and Lebesgue's dominated convergence theorem.
