Poncelet property of planar elliptic integrable Kepler billiards

We consider the integrable dynamics of a Kepler billiard in the plane bounded by a branch of a conic section focused at the Kepler center. We show that in this case, for non-zero-energy orbits, the lines of consecutive second orbital foci along a billiard trajectory are all tangent to a fixed circle. Based on this observation we analyse in details the integrable dynamics of a planar Kepler billiard inside or outside an elliptic reflection wall, with the Kepler center occupying one of its foci. We identify the associated elliptic curve on which the dynamics is linearized, and the shift defined thereon. We also discuss explicit conditions on $n$-periodicity using Cayley's criteria.

Geometric properties of integrable Kepler and Hooke billiards with conic section boundaries

We study the geometry of reflection of a massive point-like particle at conic section boundaries. Thereby the particle is subjected to a central force associated with either a Kepler or Hooke potential. The conic section is assumed to have a focus at the Kepler center, or have its center at the Hookian center respectively. When the particle hits the boundary it is ideally reflected according to the law of reflection. These systems are known to be integrable. We describe the consecutive billiard orbits in terms of their foci. We show that the second foci of these orbits always lie on a circle in the Kepler case. In the Hooke case, we show that the foci of the orbits lie on a Cassini oval. For both systems we analyze the envelope of the directrices of the orbits as well.

Gravitational billiards -- bouncing inside a paraboloid cavity

In this work the confined domains for a point-like particle propagating within the boundary of an ideally reflecting paraboloid mirror are derived. Thereby it is proven that all consecutive flight parabola foci points lie on the surface of a common sphere of radius $R$. The main results are illustrated in various limiting cases and are compared to its two-dimensional counterpart.

Gravitational billiards bouncing inside general domains -- foci curves and confined domains

A massive particle under the influence of a constant gravitational force that is bouncing inside an ideal reflecting mirror described by some function $f(x)$ is considered. For the associated flight trajectories we derive the parametric curves, named foci curves. All foci points of the parabolas for a given initial position and energy lie on these curves. From these foci curves the associated flight parabola envelopes are derived resulting, together with the mirror surface, in a confined domain for all possible particle trajectories in the non-periodic orbit case. The general results are briefly discussed and visualized for three concrete mirror surfaces.

Poncelet Plectra: Harmonious Curves in Cosine Space

It has been shown that the family of Poncelet N-gons in the confocal pair (elliptic billiard) conserves the sum of cosines of its internal angles. Curiously, this quantity is equal to the sum of cosines conserved by its affine image where the caustic is a circle. We show that furthermore, (i) when N=3, the cosine triples of both families sweep the same planar curve: an equilateral cubic resembling a plectrum (guitar pick). We also show that (ii) the family of triangles excentral to the confocal family conserves the same product of cosines as the one conserved by its affine image inscribed in a circle; and that (iii) cosine triples of both families sweep the same spherical curve. When the triple of log-cosines is considered, this curve becomes a planar, plectrum-shaped curve, rounder than the one swept by its parent confocal family.

Poncelet Propellers: Invariant Total Blade Area

Given a triangle, a trio of circumellipses can be defined, each centered on an excenter. Over the family of Poncelet 3-periodics (triangles) in a concentric ellipse pair (axis-aligned or not), the trio resembles a rotating propeller, where each "blade" has variable area. Amazingly, their total area is invariant, even when the ellipse pair is not axis-aligned. We also prove a closely-related invariant involving the sum of blade-to-excircle area ratios.

Integer Sequences from Circle Divisions in Rational Billiards

We study rational circular billiards. By viewing the trajectory formed after each reflection point to another inside the circle as the number of circle divisions into regions we derive a general formula for the number of division regions after each reflection. This will give rise to an integer division sequence. Restricting to the special cases $\vartheta =\frac{q}{2q+1}\cdot 2\pi$ we show that the number of regions after each reflection $n$ is beautifully related to Gauss 's arithmetic series.

Playing a game of billiard with Fibonacci

By making use of the greatest common divisor's ($gcd$) properties we can highlight some connections between playing billiard inside a unit square and the Fibonacci sequence as well as the Euclidean algorithm. In particular by defining two maps $\tau$ and $\sigma$ corresponding to translations and mirroring we are able to rederive Lam\'{e}'s theorem and to equip it with a geometric interpretation realizing a new way to construct the golden ratio. Further we discuss distributions of the numbers $p,q\in \mathbb{N}$ with $gcd(q,p)=1$ and show that these also relate to the Fibonacci sequence.

Entanglement and topological interfaces

In this paper we consider entanglement entropies in two-dimensional conformal field theories in the presence of topological interfaces. Tracing over one side of the interface, the leading term of the entropy remains unchanged. The interface however adds a subleading contribution, which can be interpreted as a relative (Kullback-Leibler) entropy with respect to the situation with no defect inserted. Reinterpreting boundaries as topological interfaces of a chiral half of the full theory, we rederive the left/right entanglement entropy in analogy with the interface case. We discuss WZW models and toroidal bosonic theories as examples.
