Lattice Models for Double Whittaker Polynomials and Motivic Chern Classes

We will describe solvable lattice models whose partition functions depend on two sets of variables, $x_1,\cdots,x_n$ and $y_1, y_2, \cdots $ that have different connections with the representation theory of $\text{GL}(n,F)$ where $F$ is a nonarchimedean local field. If the boundary conditions are chosen in one way, they are essentially the Motivic Chern classes that were used very effectively by Aluffi, Mihalcea, Sch\"urmann and Su (AMSS) to study such problems. In particular, using this specialization we can obtain deformations $r_{u,v}$ of the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials that were used by Bump, Nakasuji and Naruse to study matrix coefficients of intertwining operators (introduced by Casselman). Thus we are able see that the recursion formula for the $r_{u,v}$ is a reflection of the Yang-Baxter equation. On the other hand, with more general boundary conditions, specializing the parameters $y_i\to 0$ we recover colored lattice models that were previously used by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump and Gustafsson to represent Iwahori Whittaker functions on $GL(n,F)$. Thus we term the resulting two-variable-set family of functions as ``double Whittaker polynomials.''

Quantum superalgebras and the free-fermionic Yang-Baxter equation

The free-fermion point refers to a $\operatorname{GL}(2)\times\operatorname{GL}(1)$ parametrized Yang-Baxter equation within the six-vertex model. It has been known for a long time that this is connected with the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(1|1))$. We demonstrate that $R$-matrices from the finite quantum superalgebra $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(1|1))$ produce a dense subset of the free-fermionic Yang-Baxter equations of the six-vertex model, matching those of the prime, simple modules in the affine quantum superalgebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|1))$. Either of these quantum groups can be used to generate the full free-fermion point, and we discuss them both. Our discussion includes 6 families of six-vertex models used by Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg in connection with Tokuyama's theorem, a deformation of the Weyl character formula. Thus our work gives quantum group interpretations for those models, known informally as Tokuyama ice.

The Six-Vertex Yang-Baxter Groupoid

A parametrized Yang-Baxter equation is usually defined to be a map from a group to a set of R-matrices, satisfying the Yang-Baxter commutation relation. These are a mainstay of solvable lattice models. We will show how the parameter space can sometimes be enlarged to a groupoid, and give two examples of such groupoid parametrized Yang-Baxter equations, within the six vertex model. A groupoid parametrized Yang-Baxter equation consists of a groupoid $\mathfrak{G}$ together with a map $\pi:\mathfrak{G}\to\operatorname{End}(V\otimes V)$ for some vector space $V$ such that the Yang-Baxter commutator $[[ \pi(u),\pi(w),\pi(v)]]=0$ if $u,v\in\mathfrak{G}$ are such that the groupoid composition $w=u\star v$ is defined. An important role is played by an object map $\Delta:\mathfrak{G}\to M$ for some set $M$ such that $\Delta(u)=\Delta(v')$, $\Delta(w)=\Delta(v)$ and $\Delta(w')=\Delta(u')$, where $v\mapsto v'$ is the groupoid inverse map. There are two main regimes of the six-vertex model: the free-fermionic point, and everything else. For the free-fermionic point, there exists a parametrized Yang-Baxter equation with a large parameter group $\operatorname{GL}(2)\times\operatorname{GL}(1)$. For non-free-fermionic six-vertex matrices, there are also well-known (group) parametrized Yang-Baxter equations, but these do not account for all possible interactions. Instead we will construct a groupoid parametrized Yang-Baxter equation that accounts for essentially all possible Yang-Baxter equations in the six-vertex model. We will also exhibit a separate groupoid for the five-vertex model. We will show how to construct solvable lattice models based on groupoid parametrized Yang-Baxter equations.

On the Boson-Fermion Correspondence for Factorial Schur Functions

We give an algebraic (non-analytic) proof of the deformed boson-fermion Fock space construction of Molev's double supersymmetric Schur functions, among other results, from our previous paper. In other words, we make no assumptions on the variables and parameters. By specializing to a finite number of variables and shifting parameters, we recover the factorial Schur functions. Furthermore, we realize the bosonic construction through a representation of a completion of the infinite rank general linear Lie algebra.

Factorial Fock free fermions

We use a double shifted power analog of free fermion fields to introduce current operators, Hamiltonians, and vertex operators which are deformed by two families of parameters and satisfy analogous formulas to the classical case. We show that the deformed half vertex operators correspond to the row transfer matrices of a solvable six vertex model recently given by Naprienko [arXiv:2301.12110], which under a specialization yields the factorial Schur functions (up to a reindexing of parameters). As a consequence, we show that under the boson-fermion correspondence using our deformed half vertex operators, the natural basis (under this specialization) maps to the double factorial Schur functions. Furthermore, the image of the natural basis vectors are tau function solutions to the 2D Toda lattice.

Colored Bosonic Models and Matrix Coefficients

We develop the theory of colored bosonic models (initiated by Borodin and Wheeler). We will show how a family of such models can be used to represent the values of Iwahori vectors in the "spherical model" of representations of $GL_r(F)$, where $F$ is a nonarchimedean local field. Among our results are a monochrome factorization, which is the realization of the Boltzmann weights by fusion of simpler weights, a local lifting property relating the colored models with uncolored models, and an action of the affine Hecke algebra on the partition functions of a particular family of models by Demazure-Lusztig operators. As an application of the local lifting property we reprove a theorem of Korff evaluating the partition functions of the uncolored models in terms of Hall-Littlewood plynomials. Our results are very closely parallel to the theory of fermionic models representing Iwahori Whittaker functions developed by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump and Gustafsson, with many striking relationships between the two theories, confirming the philosophy that the spherical and Whittaker models of principal series representations are dual.

Iwahori-metaplectic duality

We construct a family of solvable lattice models whose partition functions include $p$-adic Whittaker functions for general linear groups from two very different sources: from Iwahori-fixed vectors and from metaplectic covers. Interpolating between them by Drinfeld twisting, we uncover unexpected relationships between Iwahori and metaplectic Whittaker functions. This leads to new Demazure operator recurrence relations for spherical metaplectic Whittaker functions. In prior work of the authors it was shown that the row transfer matrices of certain lattice models for spherical metaplectic Whittaker functions could be represented as "half-vertex operators" operating on the $q$-Fock space of Kashiwara, Miwa and Stern. In this paper the same is shown for all the members of this more general family of lattice models including the one representing Iwahori Whittaker functions.

Matrix coefficients of intertwining operators and the Bruhat order

Let $(\pi_{\mathbf{z}},V_{\mathbf{z}})$ be an unramified principal series representation of a reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field, parametrized by an element $\mathbf{z}$ of the maximal torus in the Langlands dual group. If $v$ is an element of the Weyl group $W$, then the standard intertwining integral $\mathcal{A}_v$ maps $V_{\mathbf{z}}$ to $V_{v\mathbf{z}}$. Letting $\psi^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ with $w\in W$ be a suitable basis of the Iwahori fixed vectors in $V_{\mathbf{z}}$, and $\widehat\psi^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ a basis of the contragredient representation, we define $\sigma(u,v,w)$ (for $u,v,w\in W$) to be $\langle \mathcal{A}_v\psi_u^{\mathbf{z}},\widehat\psi^{v\mathbf{z}}_w\rangle$. This is an interesting function and we initiate its study. We show that given $u$ and $w$, there is a minimal $v$ such that $\sigma(u,v,w)\neq 0$. Denoting this $v$ as $v_\hbox{min}=v_\hbox{min}(u,w)$, we will prove that $\sigma(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ is a polynomial of the cardinality $q$ of the residue field. Indeed if $v>v_\hbox{min}$, then $\sigma(u,v,w)$ is a rational function of $\mathbf{z}$ and $q$, whose denominator we describe. But if $v=v_\hbox{min}$, the dependence on $\mathbf{z}$ disappears. We will express $\sigma(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ as the Poincar\'e polynomial of a Bruhat interval. The proof leads to fairly intricate considerations of the Bruhat order. Thus our results require us to prove some facts that may be of independent interest, relating the Bruhat order $\leqslant$ and the weak Bruhat order $\leqslant_R$. For example we will prove (for finite Coxeter groups) the following "mixed meet" property. If $u, w$ are elements of $W$, then there exists a unique element $m \in W$ that is maximal with respect to the condition that $m \leqslant_R u$ and $m \leqslant w$. Thus if $z \leqslant_R u$ and $z \leqslant w$, then $x \leqslant m$. The value $v_\hbox{min}$ is $m^{-1}u$.

Metaplectic Iwahori Whittaker functions and supersymmetric lattice models

In this paper we compute new values of Iwahori Whittaker functions on $n$-fold metaplectic covers $\widetilde{G}$ of $\mathbf{G}(F)$ with $\mathbf{G}$ a split reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$. For every Iwahori Whittaker function $\phi$, and for every $g\in\widetilde{G}$, we evaluate $\phi(g)$ by recurrence relations over the Weyl group using novel "vector Demazure-Whittaker operators." The general formula and strategy of proof are inspired by ideas appearing in the theory of integrable systems. Specializing to the case of $\mathbf{G} = \mathbf{GL}_r$, we construct a solvable lattice model of a new type associated with the quantum affine super group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(r|n))$ and prove that its partition function equals $\phi(g)$. To prove this equality we match the recurrence relations on the lattice model side (obtained from the Yang-Baxter equation) to the recurrence relations for $\phi(g)$ derived by using the representation theory of $\widetilde{G}$. Remarkably, there is a bijection between the boundary data specifying the partition function and the data determining all values of the Whittaker functions.

Colored Vertex Models and Iwahori Whittaker Functions

We give a recursive method for computing all values of a basis of Whittaker functions for unramified principal series invariant under an Iwahori or parahoric subgroup of a split reductive group $G$ over a nonarchimedean local field $F$. Structures in the proof have surprising analogies to features of certain solvable lattice models. In the case $G=\mathrm{GL}_r$ we show that there exist solvable lattice models whose partition functions give precisely all of these values. Here `solvable' means that the models have a family of Yang-Baxter equations which imply, among other things, that their partition functions satisfy the same recursions as those for Iwahori or parahoric Whittaker functions. The R-matrices for these Yang-Baxter equations come from a Drinfeld twist of the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(r|1))$, which we then connect to the standard intertwining operators on the unramified principal series. We use our results to connect Iwahori and parahoric Whittaker functions to variations of Macdonald polynomials.

Colored five-vertex models and Demazure atoms

Type A Demazure atoms are pieces of Schur functions, or sets of tableaux whose weights sum to such functions. Inspired by colored vertex models of Borodin and Wheeler, we will construct solvable lattice models whose partition functions are Demazure atoms; the proof of this makes use of a Yang-Baxter equation for a colored five-vertex model. As a biproduct, we construct Demazure atoms on Kashiwara's $\mathcal{B}_\infty$ crystal and give new algorithms for computing Lascoux-Sch\"utzenberger keys.

Vertex operators, solvable lattice models and metaplectic Whittaker functions

We show that spherical Whittaker functions on an $n$-fold cover of the general linear group arise naturally from the quantum Fock space representation of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}(n))$ introduced by Kashiwara, Miwa and Stern (KMS). We arrive at this connection by reconsidering solvable lattice models known as `metaplectic ice' whose partition functions are metaplectic Whittaker functions. First, we show that a certain Hecke action on metaplectic Whittaker coinvariants agrees (up to twisting) with a Hecke action of Ginzburg, Reshetikhin, and Vasserot. This allows us to expand the framework of KMS by Drinfeld twisting to introduce Gauss sums into the quantum wedge, which are necessary for connections to metaplectic forms. Our main theorem interprets the row transfer matrices of this ice model as `half' vertex operators on quantum Fock space that intertwine with the action of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}(n))$. In the process, we introduce new symmetric functions termed \textit{metaplectic symmetric functions} and explain how they relate to Whittaker functions on an $n$-fold metaplectic cover of GL$_r$. These resemble \textit{LLT polynomials} introduced by Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon; in fact the metaplectic symmetric functions are (up to twisting) specializations of \textit{supersymmetric LLT polynomials} defined by Lam. Indeed Lam constructed families of symmetric functions from Heisenberg algebra actions on the Fock space commuting with the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}(n))$-action. We explain that half vertex operators agree with Lam's construction and this interpretation allows for many new identities for metaplectic symmetric and Whittaker functions, including Cauchy identities. While both metaplectic symmetric functions and LLT polynomials can be related to vertex operators on the $q$-Fock space, only metaplectic symmetric functions are connected to solvable lattice models.

Casselman's basis of Iwahori vectors and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials

A problem in representation theory of $p$-adic groups is the computation of the \textit{Casselman basis} of Iwahori fixed vectors in the spherical principal series representations, which are dual to the intertwining integrals. We shall express the transition matrix $(m_{u,v})$ of the Casselman basis to another natural basis in terms of certain polynomials which are deformations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials. As an application we will obtain certain new functional equations for these transition matrices under the algebraic involution sending the residue cardinality $q$ to $q^{-1}$. We will also obtain a new proof of a surprising result of Nakasuji and Naruse that relates the matrix $(m_{u,v})$ to its inverse.

Duality for metaplectic ice

We interpret values of spherical Whittaker functions on metaplectic covers of the general linear group over a nonarchimedean local field as partition functions of two different solvable lattice models. We prove the equality of these two partition functions by showing the commutativity of transfer matrices associated to different models via the Yang-Baxter equation.

Hecke Modules from Metaplectic Ice

We present a new framework for a broad class of affine Hecke algebra modules, and show that such modules arise in a number of settings involving representations of $p$-adic groups and $R$-matrices for quantum groups. Instances of such modules arise from (possibly non-unique) functionals on $p$-adic groups and their metaplectic covers, such as the Whittaker functionals. As a byproduct, we obtain new, algebraic proofs of a number of results concerning metaplectic Whittaker functions. These are thus expressed in terms of metaplectic versions of Demazure operators, which are built out of $R$-matrices of quantum groups depending on the cover degree and associated root system.

A Yang-Baxter equation for metaplectic ice

We will give new applications of quantum groups to the study of spherical Whittaker functions on the metaplectic $n$-fold cover of $GL(r,F)$, where $F$ is a nonarchimedean local field. Earlier Brubaker, Bump, Friedberg, Chinta and Gunnells had shown that these Whittaker functions can be identified with the partition functions of statistical mechanical systems. They postulated that a Yang-Baxter equation underlies the properties of these Whittaker functions. We confirm this, and identify the corresponding Yang-Baxter equation with that of the quantum affine Lie superalgebra $U_{\sqrt{v}}(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$, modified by Drinfeld twisting to introduce Gauss sums. (The deformation parameter $v$ is specialized to the inverse of the residue field cardinality.) For principal series representations of metaplectic groups, the Whittaker models are not unique. The scattering matrix for the standard intertwining operators is vector valued. For a simple reflection, it was computed by Kazhdan and Patterson, who applied it to generalized theta series. We will show that the scattering matrix on the space of Whittaker functions for a simple reflection coincides with the twisted $R$-matrix of the quantum group $U_{\sqrt{v}}(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(n))$. This is a piece of the twisted $R$-matrix for $U_{\sqrt{v}}(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$, mentioned above.

Useful bounds on the extreme eigenvalues and vectors of matrices for Harper's operators

In analyzing a simple random walk on the Heisenberg group we encounter the problem of bounding the extreme eigenvalues of an $n\times n$ matrix of the form $M=C+D$ where $C$ is a circulant and $D$ a diagonal matrix. The discrete Schr\"odinger operators are an interesting special case. The Weyl and Horn bounds are not useful here. This paper develops three different approaches to getting good bounds. The first uses the geometry of the eigenspaces of $C$ and $D$, applying a discrete version of the uncertainty principle. The second shows that, in a useful limit, the matrix $M$ tends to the harmonic oscillator on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and the known eigenstructure can be transferred back. The third approach is purely probabilistic, extending $M$ to an absorbing Markov chain and using hitting time arguments to bound the Dirichlet eigenvalues. The approaches allow generalization to other walks on other groups.

Matrix Coefficients and Iwahori-Hecke Algebra Modules

We establish a connection between certain unique models, or equivalently unique functionals, for representations of p-adic groups and linear characters of their corresponding Hecke algebras. This allows us to give a uniform evaluation of the image of spherical and Iwahori-fixed vectors in the unramified principal series for this class of models. We provide an explicit alternator expressionfor the image of the spherical vectors under these functionals in terms of the representation theory of the dual group.
