An Improved Weighting Algorithm to Achieve Software Compensation in a Fine Grained LAr Calorimeter

An improved weighting algorithm applied to hadron showers has been developed for a fine grained LAr calorimeter. The new method uses tabulated weights which depend on the density of energy deposited in individual cells and in a surrounding cone whose symmetry axis connects the interaction vertex with the highest energy cluster in the shower induced by a hadron. The weighting of the visible energy and the correction for losses due to noise cuts are applied in separate steps. In contrast to standard weighting procedures the new algorithm allows to reconstruct the total energy as well as the spatial energy deposition on the level of individual calorimeter cells. The linearity and the energy resolution of the pion signal in the momentum interval 2 GeV/c <= p <= 20 GeV/c studied in this analysis are considerably improved in comparison to the standard weighting algorithm as practiced presently by the H1 collaboration. Moreover the energy spectra reconstructed with the new method follow in a broad interval a Gaussian distribution and have less pronounced tails.

On the Investigation of the Proton Structure Using QED Compton Events in ep Scattering

QED Compton scattering at HERA is discussed in terms of the information it may reveal on the proton structure at low momentum transfers Q2. Detailed Monte Carlo studies are performed which show that the analysis of inelastic QED Compton events allows the extension of present HERA structure function measurements to a kinematic regime, which up to now was only accessed in fixed target data. For these studies an improved version of the COMPTON event generator is used, where special emphasis has been put on modelling the hadronic final state at low invariant masses. As the low Q2 regime is sometimes also discussed in the context of the collinear approximation and the possibility of measuring the photonic content of the proton, the Monte Carlo studies are also used to check the validity of this approach. It is found that the proposed concept of a photon density of the proton does not provide sufficient accuracy for the description of inelastic QED Compton scattering.

Observation of coasting beam at the HERA Proton--Ring

We present data collected with the HERA-B wire target which prove the existence of coasting beam at the HERA proton storage ring. The coasting beam is inherently produced by the proton machine operation and is not dominated by target effects.
