Target mass and finite $t$ corrections to diffractive deeply inelastic scattering

The quantum field theoretic treatment of inclusive deep--inelastic diffractive scattering given in a previous paper \cite{BGR2006} is discussed in detail using an equivalent formulation with the aim to derive a representation suitable for data analysis. We consider the off-cone twist--2 light-cone operators to derive the target mass and finite $t$ corrections to diffractive deep--inelastic scattering and deep--inelastic scattering. The corrections turn out to be at most proportional to $x |t|/Q^2, x M^2/Q^2, x = x_{\rm BJ} {\rm or} x_\PP$, which suggests an expansion in these parameters. Their contribution varies in size considering diffractive scattering or meson--exchange processes. Relations between different kinematic amplitudes which are determined by one and the same diffractive GPD or its moments are derived. In the limit $t, M^2 \to 0$ one obtains the results of \cite{Blumlein:2001xf} and \cite{Blumlein:2002fw}.

Target Mass Corrections in Diffractive Scattering

We describe the twist-2 contributions to inclusive unpolarized and polarized deep-inelastic diffractive scattering in an operator approach. The representation refers to the observed large rapidity gap but does not require reference to a pomeron picture. We discuss both the case of vanishing target mass $M$ and momentum transfer $t$ as well as the effects at finite $t$ and $M$, which lead to modifications at large $β$ and low values of $Q^2$.

The twist-2 Compton operator and its hidden Wandzura-Wilczek and Callan-Gross relations

Power corrections for virtual Compton scattering at leading twist are etermined at operator level. From the complete off-cone representation of the twist-2 Compton operator integral representations for the trace, antisymmetric and symmetric part of that operator are derived. The operator valued invariant functions are written in terms of iterated operators and may lead to interrelations. For matrix elements they go over into relations for generalized parton distributions. -- Reducing to the s-channel relevant part one gets operator pre-forms of the Wandzura-Wilczek and the (target mass corrected) Callan-Gross relations whose structure is exactly the same as known from the case of deep inelastic scattering; taking non-forward matrix elements one reproduces earlier results [B. Geyer, D. Robaschik and J. Eilers, Nucl. Phys. B 704 (2005) 279] for the absorptive part of the virtual Compton amplitude. -- All these relations, obtained without any approximation or using equations of motion, are determined solely by the twist-2 structure of the underlying operator and, therefore, are purely of geometric origin.

Target mass corrections for virtual Compton scattering at twist-2 and generalized, non-forward Wandzura-Wilczek and Callan-Gross relations

The off-cone Compton operator of twist-2 is Fourier transformed using a general procedure which is applicable, in principle, to any QCD tensor operator of definite (geometric) twist. That method allows, after taking the non-forward matrix elements, to separate quite effectively their imaginary part and to reveal some hidden structure in terms of appropriately defined variables, including generalized Nachtmann variables. In this way, without using the equations of motion, generalizations of the Wandzura-Wilzcek relation and of the mass-corrected Callan-Gross relation to the non-forward scattering, having the same shape as in the forward case, are obtained. In addition, new relations for those structure functions which vanish in the forward case are derived. These structure functions are written in terms of iterated generalized parton distributions of $n$-th order.

Polarized Deep Inelastic Diffractive Scattering near the Light Cone

Polarized inclusive deep-inelastic scattering is formulated in the light cone expansion. The QCD evolution of the leading twist distribution functions is derived. It is shown that the twist--2 contribution to the structure functions g_2^{D(3)} is obtained via g_1^{D(3)} by a Wandzura--Wilczek relation.

Polarized Deep Inelastic Diffractive ep Scattering: Operator Approach

Polarized inclusive deep-inelastic diffractive scattering is dealt with in a quantum field theoretic approach. The process can be described in the general framework of non-forward scattering processes using the light-cone expansion in the generalized Bjorken region applying the generalized optical theorem. The diffractive structure functions $g_1^{D(3)}$ and $g_2^{D(3)}$ are calculated in the twist-2 approximation and are expressed by diffractive parton distributions, which are derived from pseudo-scalar two-variable operator expectation values. In this approximation the structure functions $g_2^{D(3)}$ is obtained from $g_1^{D(3)}$ by a Wandzura-Wilczek relation similar as for deep inelastic scattering. The evolution equations are given. We also comment on the higher twist contributions in the light-cone expansion.

On the Scaling Violations of Diffractive Structure Functions: Operator Approach

A quantum field theoretic treatment of inclusive deep-inelastic diffractive scattering is given. The process can be described in the general framework of non-forward scattering processes using the light-cone expansion in the generalized Bjorken region. Evolution equations of the diffractive hadronic matrix elements are derived at the level of the twist-2 contributions and are compared to those of inclusive deep-inelastic forward scattering (DIS). The diffractive parton densities are obtained as projections of two-variable parton distributions. We also comment on the higher twist contributions in the light-cone expansion.

The Virtual Compton Amplitude in the Generalized Bjorken Region: Twist--2 Contributions

A systematic derivation is presented of the twist-2 anomalous dimensions of the general quark and gluon light-ray operators in the generalized Bjorken region in leading order both for unpolarized and polarized scattering. Various representations of the anomalous dimensions are derived both in the non-local and the local light cone expansion and their properties are discussed in detail. Evolution equations for these operators are derived using different representations. General two- and single-variable evolution equations are presented for the expectation values of these operators for non-forward scattering. The Compton amplitude is calculated in terms of these distribution amplitudes. In the limit of forward scattering a new derivation of the integral relations between the twist-2 contributions to the structure functions is given. Special limiting cases which are derived from the general relations are discussed, as the forward case, near-forward scattering, and vacuum-meson transition. Solutions of the two-variable evolution equations for non-forward scattering are presented.

Decomposition of nonlocal light-cone operators into harmonic operators of definite twist

Bilocal light-ray operators which are Lorentz scalars, vectors or antisymmetric tensors, and which appear in various hard scattering QCD processes, are decomposed into operators of definite twist. These operators are harmonic tensor functions and their Taylor expansion consists of (traceless) local light-cone operators with span irreducible representations of the Lorentz group with definite spin j and common geometric twist (= dimension - spin). Some applications concerning the nonforward matrix elements of these operators and the generalization fo conformal light-cone operators of definite twist is considered. The group theoretical background of the method has been made clear.

Representation of the virtual Compton amplitude for polarized scattering in the generalized Bjorken region

The Compton amplitude is calculated in terms of expectation values of light-ray quark operators. As a technical tool we apply the nonlocal light-cone expansion. Thereby we express the expectation value of the vector light-ray operator with the help of the expectation value of the corresponding scalar operator of twist 2. This allows important simplifications. In the limit of forward scattering the integral relations between the twist-2 contributions of the structure functions are implied directly.

Thermodynamics of the Casimir effect

A complete thermodynamic treatment of the Casimir effect is presented. Explicit expressions for the free and the internal energy, the entropy and the pressure are discussed. As an example we consider the Casimir effect with different temperatures between the plates ($T$) resp. outside of them ($T'$). For $T'<T$ the pressure of heat radiation can eventually compensate the Casimir force and the total pressure can vanish. We consider both an isothermal and an adiabatic treatment of the interior region. The equilibrium point (vanishing pressure) turns out instable in the isothermal case. In the adiabatic situation we have both an instable and a stable equilibrium point, if $T'/T$ is sufficiently small. Quantitative aspects are briefly discussed.

Wave Functions, Evolution Equations and Evolution Kernels from Light-Ray Operators of QCD

The widely used nonperturbative wave functions and distribution functions of QCD are determined as matrix elements of light-ray operators. These operators appear as large momentum limit of nonlocal hadron operators or as summed up local operators in light-cone expansions. Nonforward one-particle matrix elements of such operators lead to new distribution amplitudes describing both hadrons simultaneously. These distribution functions depend besides other variables on two scaling variables. They are applied for the description of exclusive virtual Compton scattering in the Bjorken region near forward direction and the two meson production process. The evolution equations for these distribution amplitudes are derived on the basis of the renormalization group equation of the considered operators. This includes that also the evolution kernels follow from the anomalous dimensions of these operators. Relations between different evolution kernels (especially the Altarelli-Parisi and the Brodsky-Lepage) kernels are derived and explicitly checked for the existing two-loop calculations of QCD. Technical basis of these results are support and analytically properties of the anomalous dimensions of light-ray operators obtained with the help of the $α$-representation of Green's functions.

Thermodynamics of the Casimir Effect - Asymptotic Considerations -

We study the Casimir effect with different temperatures between the plates ($T$) resp. outside of them ($T'$). If we consider the inner system as the black body radiation for a special geometry, then contrary to common belief the temperature approaches a constant value for vanishing volume during isentropic processes. This means: the reduction of the degrees of freedom can not be compensated by a concentration of the energy during an adiabatic contraction of the two-plate system. Looking at the Casimir pressure, we find one unstable equilibrium point for isothermal processes with $T > T'$. For isentropic processes there is additionally one stable equilibrium point for larger values of the distances between the two plates.}

Twist-2 Light-Ray Operators: Anomalous Dimensions and Evolution Equations

The non-singlet and singlet anomalous dimensions of the twist--2 light-ray operators for unpolarized and polarized deep inelastic scattering are calculated in $O(α_s)$. We apply these results for the derivation of evolution equations for partition functions, structure functions, and wave functions which are defined as Fourier transforms of the matrix elements of the light-ray operators. Special cases are the Altarelli-Parisi and Brodsky-Lepage kernels. Finally we extend Radyushkin's solution from the non-singlet to the singlet case.

Evolution Kernels for Light-Ray Operators: Twist 2 and Twist 3 Contributions

The general evolution kernels of the twist 2 light-ray operators for unpolarized and polarized deep inelastic scattering are calculated in ${\cal O}(α_s)$. From these evolution kernels a series of special evolution equations can be derived, among them the Altarelli-Parisi equations and the evolution equation for the meson wave function. In the case of twist 3 the results of Balitzki and Braun are confirmed.

On the Evolution Kernels of Twist 2 Light-Ray Operators for Unpolarized and Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering

The non-singlet and singlet evolution kernels of the twist--2 light-ray operators for unpolarized and polarized deep inelastic scattering are calculated in $O(α_s)$ for the general case of virtualities $q^2, q'^2 \neq 0$. Special cases as the kernels for the general single-variable evolution equation and the Altarelli-Parisi and Brodsky-Lepage limits are derived from these results.

The evolution of the nonsinglet twist-3 parton distribution function

The twist three contributions to the $Q^2$-evolution of the spin-dependent structure function $g_2(x_{Bj},Q^2)$ are considered in the non-local operator product approach. Defining appropriate twist three distribution function we derive their evolution equation for the nonsinglet case in leading order approximation. In the limit $x_{Bj} \rightarrow 1$ as well as in the large $N_c$ limit we confirm the result that the evolution of the nonsinglet part of $g_2$ is governed by a Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equation.
