Microchannel plate detector development for ultraviolet astronomy

Observational data from the UV wavelength range is crucial to solve several astrophysical puzzles. Consequently, there are a number of upcoming UV missions from CubeSats up to the future flagship Habitable Worlds Observatory. Besides novel instrument concepts and improved coatings, advanced detectors are key for the success of these missions. The microchannel plate (MCP) detector technology offers a unique asset in the UV: the combination of single-photon counting and visible-blindness. The UV hardware group at the Institut f\"ur Astronomie und Astrophysik T\"ubingen (IAAT) develops a versatile MCP detector system that addresses the complete UV band. While a sealed-tube design is limited to wavelengths above 118\,nm, an open-face variant also covers the whole far- and extreme-UV. Both use the same readout: a coplanar cross-strip anode and FPGA-based electronics. In this contribution, we report on the status of the detector development, present the latest characterization results, and give an outlook on the mission prospects.

Progress towards a microchannel plate detector with AlGaN photocathode and cross-strip anode for ultraviolet astronomy

Microchannel plates (MCPs) were the driving detector technology for ultraviolet (UV) astronomy over many years, and still today MCP-based detectors are the baseline for several planned UV instruments. The development of advanced MCP detectors is ongoing and pursues the major goals of maximizing sensitivity, resolution, and lifetime, while at the same time decreasing weight, volume, and power consumption. Development efforts for an MCP-based detector system for the UV are running at IAAT at the University of T\"ubingen. In this publication, we present our latest results towards coating aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN) photocathodes directly on MCPs, to improve quantum detection efficiency in the far- and extreme-UV. Furthermore, we report on the implementation of a non-iterative centroiding algorithm for our coplanar cross-strip anode directly in an FPGA.

NMR and dc-susceptibility studies of NaVGe2O6

We report the results of measurements of the dc magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and of the 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) response of NaVGe2O6, a material in which the V ions form a network of interacting one-dimensional spin S=1 chains. The experiments were made at temperatures between 2.5 and 300 K. The chi(T) data suggest that the formation of the expected low-temperature Haldane phase is intercepted by an antiferromagnetic phase transition at 18 K. The transition is also reflected in the 23Na NMR spectra and the corresponding spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1(T). In the ordered phase, 1/T1(T) decreases by orders of magnitude with decreasing temperature, indicating the formation of a gap of the order of 12 K in the magnetic excitation spectrum.

Unusual magnetic properties of the low-dimensional quantum magnet Na2V3O7

We report the results of low-temperature measurements of the specific heat Cp(T), ac susceptibility chi(T) and 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance NMR of Na2V3O7. At liquid He temperatures Cp(T)/T exhibits broad field-dependent maxima, which shift to higher temperatures upon increasing the applied magnetic field H. Below 1.5 K the ac magnetic susceptibility chi(T) follows a Curie-Weiss law and exhibits a cusp at 0.086 mK which indicates a phase transition at very low temperatures. These results support the previous conjecture that Na2V3O7 is close to a quantum critical point (QCP) at mu_{0}H = 0 T. The entire data set, including results of measurements of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation 1/T1(T), reveals a complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures. We argue that it is due to a distribution of singlet-triplet energy gaps of dimerized V moments. The dimerization process evolves over a rather broad temperature range around and below 100 K. At the lowest temperatures the magnetic properties are dominated by the response of only a minor fraction of the V moments.

Unconventional Charge Ordering in Na0.70CoO2 below 300 K

We present the results of measurements of the dc-magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and the 23Na-NMR response of Na_{0.70}CoO_{2} at temperatures between 50 and 340 K. The chi(T) data suggest that for T > 75 K, the Co ions adopt an effective configuration of Co^{3.4+}. The 23Na-NMR response reveals pronounced anomalies near 250 and 295 K, but no evidence for magnetic phase transitions is found in chi(T). Our data suggest the onset of a dramatic change in the Co 3d-electron spin dynamics at 295 K. This process is completed at 230 K. Our results maybe interpreted as evidence for either a tendency to electron localization or an unconventional charge-density wave phenomenon within the cobalt oxide layer, CoO_2, 3d electron system near room temperature.

Inhomogeneous magnetism in decagonal Al$_{69.8}$Pd$_{12.1}$Mn$_{18.1}$

We report the results of measurements of $^{27}$Al and $^{55}$Mn NMR spectra, the related spin-lattice relaxation rates, and the dc magnetic susceptibility of the stable decagonal quasicrystal Al$_{69.8}$Pd$_{12.1}$Mn$_{18.2}$. The temperature-variation of the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ reveals that the Mn ions carry only an average magnetic moment of approximately $2μ_{\mathrm{B}}$, and confirms a spin-glass type freezing of the Mn-moments at $T_f=12$K. The NMR spectra reveal two partially resolved lines for the $^{27}$Al-nuclei, indicating that there are two different sets of environments for the Al-sites. The integrated intensity of the Mn line in the spectra suggests that about half of the Mn ions carry no magnetic moment. Below 50K, and upon decreasing the temperature, the $^{27}$Al NMR-linewidth $w$ and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ both grow with an increasingly negative slope, as it is often observed and interpreted as a critical "slowing down" of magnetic moments in systems approaching a spin-glass transition. Various features, such as a broad maximum in $T_1^{-1}(T)$ and a slope change in the $w(χ)$ plot, both around 120K, suggest a gradual reduction of the number of Mn moments with decreasing temperature below 120K.

A low-dimensional spin S = 1/2 system at the quantum critical limit: Na2V2O7

We report the results of measurements of the dc-susceptibility and the 23Na-NMR response of Na2V2O7, a recently synthesized, non metallic low dimensional spin system. Our results indicate that upon reducing the temperature to below 100 K, the V^{4+} moments are gradually quenched, leaving only one moment out of 9 active. The NMR data reveal a phase transition at very low temperatures. With decreasing applied field H, the critical temperature shifts towards T = 0 K, suggesting that Na2V2O7 may be regarded as an insulator reaching a quantum critical point at H = 0.

Anomalous NMR response of quasicrystalline icosahedral A_{72.4}Pd_{20.5}Mn_{7.1} at low temperatures

We report the observation of an anomalous {27}Al-NMR response of a single grain Al_{72.4}Pd_{20.5}Mn_{7.1} icosahedral quasicrystal at low temperatures. In an external magnetic field of 6 T and upon decreasing temperature, we observe a sharp 100 % increase of the resonance linewidth at 2.5 K. No further changes of the linewidth are observed down to 0.05 K. The linewidth enhancement is accompanied by a small but distinct increase of the spin-lattice relaxation rate T_{1}^{-1} and by a maximum of the spin-spin relaxation time T_{2}(T). All these anomalies are absent in external fields of 2.5 T and below. Our observations indicate unusual variations in the stability of isolated magnetic moments in a quasiperiodic metallic environment.

Anomalous NMR Spin-Lattice Relaxation in SrB_{6} and Ca_{1-x}La_{x}B_{6}

We report the results of {11}B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of SrB_{6} and Ca_{0.995}La_{0.05}B_{6} below room temperature. Although the electrical resistivities of these two materials differ substantially, their {11}B-NMR responses exhibit some strikingly common features. Both materials exhibit ferromagnetic order, but their {11}B-NMR spectra reveal very small hyperfine fields at the Boron sites. The spin lattice relaxation T_{1}^{-1} varies considerably with external field but changes with temperature only below a few K. We discuss these unusual results by considering various different scenarios for the electronic structure of these materials.
