Topological Levinson's theorem and corrections at thresholds: the full picture in a quasi-1D example

Various threshold effects are investigated on a discrete quasi-1D scattering system. In particular, one of these effects is to add corrections to Levinson's theorem. We explain how these corrections are due to the opening or to the closing of channels of scattering, and how these contributions can be computed as partial winding numbers on newly introduced operators. Embedded thresholds, thresholds associated with changes of spectral multiplicity, and doubly degenerate thresholds are exhibited and analyzed. Most of the investigations are of an analytical nature, but the final equalities rely on a C*-algebraic framework.

Topological Levinson's theorem in presence of embedded thresholds and discontinuities of the scattering matrix

A family of discrete Schroedinger operators is investigated through scattering theory. The continuous spectrum of these operators exhibit changes of multiplicity, and some of these operators possess resonances at thresholds. It is shown that the corresponding wave operators belong to an explicitly constructed C*-algebra, whose K-theory is carefully analysed. An index theorem is deduced from these investigations, which corresponds to a topological version of Levinson's theorem in presence of embedded thresholds, resonances, and changes of multiplicity of the scattering matrices. In the second half of the paper, very detailed computations for the simplest realisation of this family of operators are provided. In particular, a surface of resonances is exhibited, probably for the first time. For Levinson's theorem, it is shown that contributions due to resonances at the lowest value and at the highest value of the continuous spectrum play an essential role.

Does Levinson's theorem count complex eigenvalues ?

Yes it does ! Indeed an extended version of Levinson's theorem is proposed for a system involving complex eigenvalues. The perturbed system corresponds to a realization of the Schroedinger operator with inverse square potential on the half-line, while the Dirichlet Laplacian on the half-line is chosen for the reference system. The resulting relation is an equality between the number of eigenvalues of the perturbed system and the winding number of the scattering system together with additional operators living at 0-energy and at infinite energy.

Continuity of the spectra for families of magnetic operators on Z^d

For families of magnetic self-adjoint operators on ${\mathbb Z}^d$ whose symbols and magnetic fields depend continuously on a parameter $\epsilon$, it is shown that the main spectral properties of these operators also vary continuously with respect to $\epsilon$. The proof is based on an algebraic setting involving twisted crossed product C*-algebras.

Compactness Criteria for Sets and Operators in the Setting of Continuous Frames

To a generalized tight continuous frame in a Hilbert space $\H$ indexed by a locally compact space $\Si$ endowed with a Radon measure, one associates a coorbit theory converting spaces of functions on $\Si$ in spaces of vectors comparable with $\H$. If the continuous frame is provided by the action of a suitable family of bounded operators on a fixed window, a symbolic calculus emerges, assigning operators in $\H$ to functions on $\Si$. We give some criteria of relative compactness for sets and for families of compact operators, involving tightness properties in terms of objects canonically associated to the frame. Particular attention is dedicated to a magnetic version of the pseudodifferential calculus.
