B(E1) Strengths from Coulomb Excitation of 11Be

The $B$(E1;$1/2^+\to1/2^-$) strength for $^{11}$Be has been extracted from intermediate energy Coulomb excitation measurements, over a range of beam energies using a new reaction model, the extended continuum discretized coupled channels (XCDCC) method. In addition, a measurement of the excitation cross section for $^{11}$Be+$^{208}$Pb at 38.6 MeV/nucleon is reported. The $B$(E1) strength of 0.105(12) e$^2$fm$^2$ derived from this measurement is consistent with those made previously at 60 and 64 MeV/nucleon, i n contrast to an anomalously low result obtained at 43 MeV/nucleon. By coupling a multi-configuration description of the projectile structure with realistic reaction theory, the XCDCC model provides for the first time a fully quantum mechanical description of Coulomb excitation. The XCDCC calculations reveal that the excitation process involves significant contributions from nuclear, continuum, and higher-order effects. An analysis of the present and two earlier intermediate energy measurements yields a combined B(E1) strength of 0.105(7) e$^2$fm$^2$. This value is in good agreement with the value deduced independently from the lifetime of the $1/2^-$ state in $^{11}$Be, and has a comparable p recision.

Structure of 12Be: intruder d-wave strength at N=8

The breaking of the N=8 shell-model magic number in the 12Be ground state has been determined to include significant occupancy of the intruder d-wave orbital. This is in marked contrast with all other N=8 isotones, both more and less exotic than 12Be. The occupancies of the 0 hbar omega neutron p1/2-orbital and the 1 hbar omega, neutron d5/2 intruder orbital were deduced from a measurement of neutron removal from a high-energy 12Be beam leading to bound and unbound states in 11Be.

Three-centre cluster structure in 11C and 11B

Studies of the 16O(9Be,alpha 7Be)14C, 7Li(9Be,alpha 7Li)5He and 7Li(9Be,alpha alpha t)5He reactions at E(beam)=70 and 55 MeV have been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques. The 11C excited states decaying into alpha+7Be(gs) are observed between 8.5 and 13.5 MeV. The alpha+7Li(gs), alpha+7Li*(4.652 MeV) and t+8Be(gs) decays of 11B excited states between 9 and 19 MeV are observed. The decay processes are used to indicate the possible three-centre 2alpha+3He (2alpha+3H) cluster structure of observed states. This cluster structure is more prominent in the positive-parity states, where two rotational bands with large deformations are suggested. Excitations of some of the observed T=1/2 resonances coincide with the energies of previously measured T=3/2 isobaric analogs of the 11Be states, indicating that these states may have mixed isospin.

Correlation functions and emission time sequence of light charged particles from projectile-like fragment source in E/A = 44 and 77 MeV 40Ar + 27Al collisions

Two-particle correlation functions, involving protons, deuterons, tritons, and alpha-particles, have been measured at very forward angles (0.7 deg < theta_lab < 7 deg), in order to study projectile-like fragment (PLF) emission in E/A = 44 and 77 MeV 40Ar + 27Al collisions. Peaks, originating from resonance decays, are larger at E/A = 44 than at 77 MeV. This reflects the larger relative importance of independently emitted light particles, as compared to two-particle decay from unstable fragments, at the higher beam energy. The time sequence of the light charged particles, emitted from the PLF, has been deduced from particle-velocity-gated correlation functions (discarding the contribution from resonance decays). Alpha-particles are found to have an average emission time shorter than protons but longer than tritons and deuterons.

alpha-decay of excited states in 11C and 11B

Studies of the 16O(9Be,alpha7Be)14C and 7Li(9Be,alpha7Li)5He reactions at E{beam}=70 MeV have been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques. The 11C excited states decaying into alpha+7Be(gs) are observed at 8.65, 9.85, 10.7 and 12.1 MeV as well as possible states at 12.6 and 13.4 MeV. This result is the first observation of alpha-decay for excited states above 9 MeV. The alpha+7Li(gs) decay of 11B excited states at 9.2, 10.3, 10.55, 11.2, (11.4), 11.8, 12.5,(13.0), 13.1, (14.0), 14.35, (17.4) and (18.6) MeV is observed. The decay processes are used to indicate the possible three-centre 2alpha+3He(3H) cluster structure of observed states. Two rotational bands corresponding to very deformed structures are suggested for the positive-parity states. Excitations of some observed T=1/2 resonances coincide with the energies of T=3/2 states which are the isobaric analogs of the lowest 11Be states. Some of these states may have mixed isospin.

Cluster structure of 13C probed via the 7Li(9Be,13C*->9Be+alpha) reaction

A study of the 7Li(9Be,4He9Be)3H reaction at E{beam}=70 MeV has been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques and provides a measurement of alpha-decaying states in 13C. Excited states are observed at 12.0, 13.4, 14.1, 14.6, 15.2, 16.8, 17.9, 18.7, 21.3 and 23.9 MeV. This study provides the first measurement of the three highest energy states. Angular distribution measurements have been performed and have been employed to indicate the transferred angular momentum for the populated states. These data are compared with recent speculations of the presence of chain-like structures in 13C.

4He decay of excited states in 14C

A study of the 7Li(9Be,4He 10Be)2H reaction at E{beam}=70 MeV has been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques and provides the first measurements of alpha-decaying states in 14C. Excited states are observed at 14.7, 15.5, 16.4, 18.5, 19.8, 20.6, 21.4, 22.4 and 24.0 MeV. The experimental technique was able to resolve decays to the various particle bound states in 10Be, and provides evidence for the preferential decay of the high energy excited states into states in 10Be at ~6 MeV. The decay processes are used to indicate the possible cluster structure of the 14C excited states.

Highly deformed $^{40}$Ca configurations in $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C

The possible occurrence of highly deformed configurations in the $^{40}$Ca di-nuclear system formed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C reaction is investigated by analyzing the spectra of emitted light charged particles. Both inclusive and exclusive measurements of the heavy fragments (A $\geq$ 10) and their associated light charged particles (protons and $α$ particles) have been made at the IReS Strasbourg {\sc VIVITRON} Tandem facility at bombarding energies of $E_{lab} (^{28}$Si) = 112 MeV and 180 MeV by using the {\sc ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The energy spectra, velocity distributions, and both in-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations of light charged particles are compared to statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. The analysis suggests the onset of large nuclear deformation in $^{40}$Ca at high spin.

8Be cluster emission versus alpha evaporation in 28Si + 12C

The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations in the $^{40}$Ca di-nuclear system formed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C reaction is investigated by analyzing the spectra of emitted light charged particles. Both inclusive and exclusive measurements of the heavy fragments (A $\geq$ 10) and their associated light charged particles (protons and $α$ particles) have been made at the IReS Strasbourg {\sc VIVITRON} Tandem facility at bombarding energies of $E_{lab}$ ($^{28}$Si) = 112 MeV and 180 MeV by using the {\sc ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The energy spectra, velocity distributions, in-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations of light charged particles are compared to statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. This spin dependence approach suggests the onset of large nuclear deformation in $^{40}$Ca at high spin. This conclusion might be connected with the recent observation of superdeformed bands in the $^{40}$Ca nucleus. The analysis of $α$ particles in coincidence with $^{32}$S fragments suggests a surprisingly strong $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.

Deformation effects in the $^{28}$Si+$^{12}$C and $^{28}$Si+$^{28}$Si reaction Search

The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations is investigated in the $^{40}$Ca and $^{56}$Ni di-nuclear systems as formed in the $^{28}$Si+$^{12}$C,$^{28}$Si reactions by using the properties of emitted light charged particles. Inclusive as well as exclusive data of the heavy fragments and their associated light charged particles have been collected by using the {\sc ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The data are analysed by Monte Carlo CASCADE statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. Significant deformation effects at high spin are observed as well as an unexpected large $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.

Search for emission of unstable $^8$Be clusters from hot $^40$Ca and $^56$Ni nuclei

The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations is investigated in the $^{40}$Ca and $^{56}$Ni di-nuclear systems as formed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C and $^{28}$Si + $^{28}$Si reactions, respectively, by using the properties of emitted light charged particles. Inclusive as well as exclusive data of the heavy fragments (A $\geq$ 6) and their associated light charged particles (p, d, t, and $α$-particles) have been collected at the IReS Strasbourg VIVITRON Tandem facility with two bombarding energies $E_{lab}(^{28}$Si) = 112 and 180 MeV by using the ICARE charged particle multidetector array, which consists of nearly 40 telescopes. The measured energy spectra, velocity distributions, in-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations are analysed by Monte Carlo CASCADE statistical-model calculations using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. Although significant deformation effects at high spin are needed, the remaining disagreement observed in the $^{28}$Si + $^{12}$C reaction for the S evaporation residue suggests an unexpected large unstable $^{8}$Be cluster emission of a binary nature.

Extended Hauser-Feshbach Method for Statistical Binary-Decay of Light-Mass Systems

An Extended Hauser-Feshbach Method (EHFM) is developed for light heavy-ion fusion reactions in order to provide a detailed analysis of all the possible decay channels by including explicitly the fusion-fission phase-space in the description of the cascade chain. The mass-asymmetric fission component is considered as a complex-fragment binary-decay which can be treated in the same way as the light-particle evaporation from the compound nucleus in statistical-model calculations. The method of the phase-space integrations for the binary-decay is an extension of the usual Hauser-Feshbach formalism to be applied to the mass-symmetric fission part. The EHFM calculations include ground-state binding energies and discrete levels in the low excitation-energy regions which are essential for an accurate evaluation of the phase-space integrations of the complex-fragment emission (fission). In the present calculations, EHFM is applied to the first-chance binary-decay by assuming that the second-chance fission decay is negligible. In a similar manner to the description of the fusion-evaporation process, the usual cascade calculation of light-particle emission from the highly excited complex fragments is applied. This complete calculation is then defined as EHFM+CASCADE. Calculated quantities such as charge-, mass- and kinetic-energy distributions are compared with inclusive and/or exclusive data for the $^{32}$S+$^{24}$Mg and $^{35}$Cl+$^{12}$C reactions which have been selected as typical examples. Finally, the missing charge distributions extracted from exclusive measurements are also successfully compared with the EHFM+CASCADE predictions.

Statistical Binary Decay of $^{35}$Cl + $^{24}$Mg at 8 MeV/nucleon

The properties of the two-body channels in the $^{35}$Cl + $^{24}$Mg reaction at a bombarding energy of 275 MeV have been investigated by using fragment-fragment coincident techniques. The exclusive data show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process. The rather large number of secondary light charged-particles emitted from the two excited exit fragments are cnsistent with the expectations of the Extended Hauser-Feshbach Method. No evidence for the occurence of ternary break-up events is observed.

$^{35}$Cl+$^{12}$C Asymmetrical fission excitation functions

The fully energy-damped yields from the $^{35}$Cl+$^{12}$C reaction have been systematically investigated using particle-particle coincidence techniques at a $^{35}$Cl bombarding energy of $\sim$ 8 MeV/nucleon. The fragment-fragment correlation data show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process with rather large numbers of secondary light-charged particles emitted from the two excited exit fragments. No evidence is observed for ternary break-up events. The binary-process results of the present measurement, along with those of earlier, inclusive experimental data obtained at several lower bombarding energies are compared with predictions of two different kinds of statistical model calculations. These calculations are performed using the transition-state formalism and the Extended Hauser-Feshbach method and are based on the available phase space at the saddle point and scission point of the compound nucleus, respectively. The methods give comparable predictions and are both in good agreement with the experimental results thus confirming the fusion-fission origin of the fully-damped yields. The similarity of the predictions for the two models supports the claim that the scission point configuration is very close to that of the saddle point for the light $^{47}$V mass-asymmetry-dependent fission barriers needed in the transition-state calculation.
