Neutrino masses and proton decay in SO(10)

We consider the constraints on SO(10) unified models coming from the lower limits on proton lifetime and on the scale of B-L symmetry breaking within the framework of the seesaw model for neutrino masses. By upgrading a triangular relationship for the inverse of Majorana masses to the experimental situation with non maximal 2-3 mixing and non vanishing 1-3 mixing, we get for the sum of neutrino masses the upper limit 0.16 eV.

Seesaw model in SO(10) with an upper limit on right-handed neutrino masses

In the framework of SO(10) gauge unification and the seesaw mechanism, we show that the upper bound on the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino $M_{R_3} < 3 \times 10^{11}$ GeV, given by the Pati-Salam intermediate scale of $B-L$ spontaneous symmetry breaking, constrains the observables related to the left-handed light neutrino mass matrix. We assume such an upper limit on the masses of right-handed neutrinos and, as a first approximation, a Cabibbo form for the matrix $V^L$ that diagonalizes the Dirac neutrino matrix $m_D$. Using the inverse seesaw formula, we show that our hypotheses imply a triangular relation in the complex plane of the light neutrino masses with the Majorana phases. We obtain normal hierarchy with an absolute scale for the light neutrino spectrum. Two regions are allowed for the lightest neutrino mass $m_1$ and for the Majorana phases, implying predictions for the neutrino mass measured in Tritium decay and for the double beta decay effective mass $| |$.

Seesaw and leptogenesis: a triangular ansatz

A triangular ansatz for the seesaw mechanism and baryogenesis via leptogenesis is explored. In a basis where both the charged lepton and the Majorana mass matrix are diagonal, the Dirac mass matrix can generally be written as the product of a unitary times a triangular matrix. We assume the unitary matrix to be the identity and then an upper triangular Dirac matrix. Constraints from bilarge lepton mixing and leptogenesis are studied.

Baryogenesis via leptogenesis from quark-lepton symmetry\par and a compact heavy $N_R$ spectrum

By demanding a compact spectrum for the right-handed neutrinos and an approximate quark-lepton symmetry inspired from SO(10) gauge unification (assuming a Dirac neutrino mass matrix close to the up quark mass matrix), we construct a {\it fine tuning} scenario for baryogenesis via leptogenesis. We find two solutions with a normal hierarchy, with the lightest neutrino mass $m_1$ different from zero, providing an absolute scale for the spectrum. In the approximations of the model, there are three independent CP phases : $δ_L$ (that we take of the order of the quark Kobayashi-Maskawa phase) and the two light neutrino Majorana phases $α$ and $β$. A main conclusion is that, although this general scheme is rather flexible, in some regions of parameter space we find that the necessary baryogenesis with its sign is given in terms of the $δ_L$ phase alone. The light Majorana phases can also be computed and turn out to be close of $π/2$ or small. Moreover, SO(10) breaks down to the Pati-Salam group $SU(4) \times SU(2) \times SU(2)$ at the expected natural intermediate scale of about $10^{10}-10^{11}\ GeV$. A prediction is done for the effective mass in $(ββ)_{0ν}$ decay, the $ν_e$ mass and the sum of all light neutrino masses.

Spectrum of positive and negative parity pentaquarks, including $SU(3)_F$ breaking

We present the spectrum of the lightest pentaquark states of both parities and compare it with the present experimental evidence for these states. We have assumed that the main role for their mass splittings is played by the chromo-magnetic interaction. We have also kept into account the $SU(3)_F$ breaking for their contribution and for the spin orbit term. The resulting pattern is in good agreement with experiment.

Leptogenesis within a generalized quark-lepton symmetry

Quark-lepton symmetry has been shown to be inconsistent with baryogenesis via leptogenesis in natural schemes of the see-saw mechanism. Within the phenomenological approach of textures, we relax this strict symmetry and propose weaker conditions, namely models of the neutrino Dirac mass matrix $M_D$ which have the same hierarchy as the matrix elements of $M_u$. We call this guide-line generalized $hierarchical$ quark-lepton symmetry. We consider in detail particular cases in which the moduli of the matrix elements of $M_D$ are equal to those of $M_u$. Within the phenomenological approach of textures, we try for the heavy Majorana mass matrix diagonal and off-diagonal forms. We find that an ansatz for $M_D$ preserving the hierarchy, together with an off-diagonal model for the heavy Majorana neutrino mass, is consistent with neutrino masses, neutrino mixing and baryogenesis via leptogenesis for an intermediate mass scale $m_R \sim 10^{12}$ GeV. The preservation of the hierarchical structure could come from a possible symmetry scheme.

Seesaw mechanism and leptogenesis

A brief overview of the phenomenology related to the seesaw mechanism and the baryogenesis via leptogenesis is presented. In particular, it is explained how large but not maximal lepton mixing can be achieved within the type II seesaw mechanism. Moreover, the consequences for leptogenesis are explored, including flavor effects.

Quark-lepton symmetry and complementarity

We argue that the difference between the observed approximate quark-lepton complementarity and the theoretical prediction based on realistic quark-lepton symmetry within the seesaw mechanism may be adjusted by means of a triplet contribution in the seesaw formula.

Lepton mixing and seesaw mechanism

In the context of a typical model for fermion mass matrices, possibly based on the horizontal U(2) symmetry, we explore the effect of the type II seesaw mechanism on lepton mixings. We find that the combined contribution of type I and type II terms is able to explain the large but not maximal 1-2 mixing and the near maximal 2-3 mixing, while the 1-3 mixing angle is predicted to be small.

Spectrum of the Y=2 Pentaquarks

By assuming a mass formula for the spectrum of the Y=2 pentaquarks, where the chromo-magnetic interaction plays a main role, and identifying the lightest state with the Theta^+(1540), we predict a spectrum in good agreement with the few I=0 and I=1 candidates proposed in the past.

Neutrinoless double beta decay in SO(10) inspired seesaw models

By requiring the lower limit for the lightest right-handed neutrino mass, obtained in the baryogenesis from leptogenesis scenario, and a Dirac neutrino mass matrix similar to the up-quark mass matrix we predict small values for the $ν_e$ mass and for the matrix element $m_{ee}$ responsible of the neutrinoless double beta decay, $m_{ν_e}$ around $5\cdot10^{-3}$ eV and $m_{ee}$ smaller than $ 10^{-3}$ eV, respectively. The allowed range for the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino is centered around the value of the scale of B - L breaking in the SO(10) gauge theory with Pati-Salam intermediate symmetry.

Minimal seesaw mechanism

In the framework of the seesaw mechanism, and adopting a typical form for the Dirac neutrino mass matrix, we discuss the impact of minimal forms of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix. These matrices contain four or three texture zeros and only two parameters, a scale factor and a hierarchy parameter. Some forms are not compatible with large lepton mixing and are ruled out. Moreover, a normal mass hierarchy for neutrinos is predicted.

From neutrino oscillations to baryogenesis

The evidence for neutrino oscillations leads to small neutrino masses, which can be realized by means of the seesaw mechanism. In this framework, baryogenesis may be achieved from leptogenesis.

Inverting the seesaw formula

By inverting the seesaw formula we determine the heavy neutrino mass matrix. The impact on the baryogenesis via leptogenesis and the radiative lepton decays in supersymmetric models is described. Links to neutrinoless double beta decay are also briefly discussed. The analysis leads to two distinct matrix models. One has small mixings while the other has one maximal mixing. Both cannot give a sufficient amount of baryon asymmetry. Then we also comment on a different form of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix, which does provide sufficient baryon asymmetry. In a supersymmetric scenario the branching ratios of radiative lepton decays are enhanced for this model.

Bounds for the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino in SO(10) theories

By relating the Dirac neutrino mass matrix to the mass of the charged fermions and assuming that the product of the masses of the two lightest left-handed neutrinos is of the order of $Δm^2_{sol}$, we derive, within a leptogenesis scenario, a range of values for the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino, centered around the scale of $B-L$ symmetry breaking in the SO(10) theory with Pati-Salam intermediate symmetry.

Lepton number and lepton flavor violations in seesaw models

We discuss the impact of fermion mass matrices on some lepton number violating processes, namely baryogenesis via leptogenesis and neutrinoless double beta decay, and on some lepton flavor violating processes, namely radiative lepton decays in supersymmetric seesaw models.

Seesaw mechanism, baryon asymmetry and neutrinoless double beta decay

A simplified but very instructive analysis of the seesaw mechanism is here performed. Assuming a nearly diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix, we study the forms of the Majorana mass matrix of right-handed neutrinos, which reproduce the effective mass matrix of left-handed neutrinos. As a further step, the important effect of a non diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix is explored. The corresponding implications for the baryogenesis via leptogenesis and for the neutrinoless double beta decay are reviewed. We propose two distinct models where the baryon asymmetry is enhanced.
