Massless Dirac particle in a stochastic magnetic field: A solvable quantum walk approximation

A massless Dirac particle is considered, moving along the x-axis while Pauli-coupled by its anomalous magnetic moment to a piecewise constant magnetic field along the same axis, with stochastically varying sign. The motion is approximated as a quantum walk with unitary noise, for which the evolution can be found exactly. Initially ballistic, the motion approaches a classical diffusion on a time-scale determined by the speed of light, the size of the magnetic moment, the strength of the field and the time interval between changes in its direction. It is suggested that a process of this type could occur in the Sun's corona, significantly affecting the solar fluxes of one or more neutrino types.

Discrete Randomness in Discrete Time Quantum Walk: Study via Stochastic Averaging

The role of classical noise in quantum walks (QW) on integers is investigated in the form of discrete dichotomic random variable affecting its reshuffling matrix parametrized as a SU2)/U(1) coset element. Analysis in terms of quantum statistical moments and generating functions, derived by the completely positive trace preserving (CPTP) map governing evolution, reveals a pronounced eventual transition in walk's diffusion mode, from a quantum ballistic regime with rate O(t) to a classical diffusive regime with rate O(\surdt), when condition (strength of noise parameter)^{2}\times(number of steps)=1, is satisfied. The role of classical randomness is studied showing that the randomized QW, when treated on the stochastic average level by means of an appropriate CPTP averaging map, turns out to be equivalent to a novel quantized classical walk without randomness. This result emphasizes the dual role of quantization/randomization in the context of classical random walk.

Quantum Walks of SU(2)_k Anyons on a Ladder

We study the effects of braiding interactions on single anyon dynamics using a quantum walk model on a quasi-1-dimensional ladder filled with stationary anyons. The model includes loss of information of the coin and nonlocal fusion degrees of freedom on every second time step, such that the entanglement between the position states and the exponentially growing auxiliary degrees of freedom is lost. The computational complexity of numerical calculations reduces drastically from the fully coherent anyonic quantum walk model, allowing for relatively long simulations for anyons which are spin-1/2 irreps of SU(2)_k Chern-Simons theory. We find that for Abelian anyons, the walk retains the ballistic spreading velocity just like particles with trivial braiding statistics. For non-Abelian anyons, the numerical results indicate that the spreading velocity is linearly dependent on the number of time steps. By approximating the Kraus generators of the time evolution map by circulant matrices, it is shown that the spatial probability distribution for the k=2 walk, corresponding to Ising model anyons, is equal to the classical unbiased random walk distribution.

Optical ferris wheel for ultracold atoms

We propose a versatile optical ring lattice suitable for trapping cold and quantum degenerate atomic samples at discrete angular positions. We demonstrate the realisation of intensity patterns generated from Laguerre-Gauss ($\exp(i \ellθ)$) modes with different $\ell$ indices. The ring lattice can have either intensity maxima or minima, suitable for trapping in red or blue detuned light, and it can be rotated by introducing a frequency shift between the Laguerre Gauss modes. The potential wells can be joined to form a uniform ring trap, making it ideal for studying persistent currents and the Mott insulator transition in a ring geometry.

Free Dirac evolution as a quantum random walk

Any positive-energy state of a free Dirac particle that is initially highly-localized, evolves in time by spreading at speeds close to the speed of light. This general phenomenon is explained by the fact that the Dirac evolution can be approximated arbitrarily closely by a quantum random walk, where the roles of coin and walker systems are naturally attributed to the spin and position degrees of freedom of the particle. Initially entangled and spatially localized spin-position states evolve with asymptotic two-horned distributions of the position probability, familiar from earlier studies of quantum walks. For the Dirac particle, the two horns travel apart at close to the speed of light.

Non-positivity of the Wigner function and bounds on associated integrals

The Wigner function shares several properties with classical distribution functions on phase space, but is not positive-definite. The integral of the Wigner function over a given region of phase space can therefore lie outside the interval [0,1]. The problem of finding best-possible upper and lower bounds for a given region is the problem of finding the greatest and least eigenvalues of an associated Hermitian operator. Exactly solvable examples are described, and possible extensions are indicated.

Group Theory and Quasiprobability Integrals of Wigner Functions

The integral of the Wigner function of a quantum mechanical system over a region or its boundary in the classical phase plane, is called a quasiprobability integral. Unlike a true probability integral, its value may lie outside the interval [0,1]. It is characterized by a corresponding selfadjoint operator, to be called a region or contour operator as appropriate, which is determined by the characteristic function of that region or contour. The spectral problem is studied for commuting families of region and contour operators associated with concentric disks and circles of given radius a. Their respective eigenvalues are determined as functions of a, in terms of the Gauss-Laguerre polynomials. These polynomials provide a basis of vectors in Hilbert space carrying the positive discrete series representations of the algebra su(1,1)or so(2,1). The explicit relation between the spectra of operators associated with disks and circles with proportional radii, is given in terms of the dicrete variable Meixner polynomials.

Prime decomposition and correlation measure of finite quantum systems

Under the name prime decomposition (pd), a unique decomposition of an arbitrary $N$-dimensional density matrix $ρ$ into a sum of seperable density matrices with dimensions given by the coprime factors of $N$ is introduced. For a class of density matrices a complete tensor product factorization is achieved. The construction is based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem and the projective unitary representation of $Z_N$ by the discrete Heisenberg group $H_N$. The pd isomorphism is unitarily implemented and it is shown to be coassociative and to act on $H_N$ as comultiplication. Density matrices with complete pd are interpreted as grouplike elements of $H_N$. To quantify the distance of $ρ$ from its pd a trace-norm correlation index $\cal E$ is introduced and its invariance groups are determined.

Discretization of the phase space for a q-deformed harmonic oscillator with q a root of unity

The ``position'' and ``momentum'' operators for the q-deformed oscillator with q being a root of unity are proved to have discrete eigenvalues which are roots of deformed Hermite polynomials. The Fourier transform connecting the ``position'' and ``momentum'' representations is also found The phase space of this oscillator has a lattice structure, which is a non-uniformly distributed grid. Non-equidistant lattice structures also occur in the cases of the truncated harmonic oscillator and of the q-deformed parafermionic oscillator, while the parafermionic oscillator corresponds to a uniformly distributed grid.
