Thermodynamics of a generalized graphene-motivated (2+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu model beyond mean field within the Beth-Uhlenbeck approach

We investigate the thermodynamics at finite density of a generalized $(2 + 1)$-dimensional Gross-Neveu model of $N$ fermion species with various types of four-fermion interactions. The motivation for considering such a generalized schematic model arises from taking the Fierz-transformation of an effective Coulomb current-current interaction and certain symmetry breaking interaction terms, as considered for graphene-type models in Ref. [16]. We then apply path-integral bosonization techniques, based on the large $N$ limit, to derive the thermodynamic potential. This includes the leading order mean-field (saddle point) contribution as well as the next-order contribution of Gaussian fluctuations of exciton fields. The main focus of the paper is then the investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the resulting fermion-exciton plasma. In particular, we derive an extended Beth-Uhlenbeck form of the thermodynamic potential, discuss the Levinson theorem and the decomposition of the phase of the exciton correlation into a resonant and scattering part.

Effects of composite pions on the chiral condensate within the PNJL model at finite temperature

We investigate the effect of composite pions on the behaviour of the chiral condensate at finite temperature within the Polyakov-loop improved NJL model. To this end we treat quark-antiquark correlations in the pion channel (bound states and scattering continuum) within a Beth-Uhlenbeck approach that uses medium-dependent phase shifts. A striking medium effect is the Mott transition which occurs when the binding energy vanishes and the discrete pion bound state merges the continuum. This transition is triggered by the lowering of the continuum edge due to the chiral restoration transition. This in turn also entails a modification of the Polyakov-loop so that the SU(3) center symmetry gets broken at finite temperature and dynamical quarks (and gluons) appear in the system, taking over the role of the dominant degrees of freedom from the pions. At low temperatures our model reproduces the chiral perturbation theory result for the chiral condensate while at high temperatures the PNJL model result is recovered. The new aspect of the current work is a consistent treatment of the chiral restoration transition region within the Beth-Uhlenbeck approach on the basis of mesonic phase shifts for the treatment of the correlations.

Variational path-integral approach to back-reactions of composite mesons in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

For the investigation of back-reactions of composite mesons in the NJL model, a variational path-integral treatment is formulated which yields an effective action $\mathscr{A}_{\rm eff}[D_{\sigma},D_{\pi}; S]$, depending on the propagators $D_\sigma$, $D_\pi$ of $\sigma-$ and $\pi-$mesons and on the full quark propagator $S$. The stationarity conditions $\delta \mathscr{A}_{\rm eff}/ \delta S = 0$, $\delta \mathscr{A}_{\rm eff}/ \delta D_\sigma = 0$, $\delta \mathscr{A}_{\rm eff}/ \delta D_\pi = 0$, then lead to coupled Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equations for the quark self-energy and the meson polarization functions. These results reproduce and extend results of the so-called "$\Phi-$derivable" approach and provide a functional formulation for diagrammatic resummations of $1/N_c-$corrections in the NJL model. Finally, we perform a low-momentum estimate of the quark and meson loop contributions to the polarization function of the pion and on this basis discuss the Goldstone theorem.

Duality between chiral symmetry breaking and charged pion condensation at large $N_c$: Consideration of an NJL$_2$ model with baryon-, isospin- and chiral isospin chemical potentials

In this paper we investigate the phase structure of a (1+1)-dimensional schematic quark model with four-quark interaction and in the presence of baryon ($\mu_B$), isospin ($\mu_I$) and chiral isospin ($\mu_{I5}$) chemical potentials. It is established that in the large-$N_c$ limit ($N_c$ is the number of colored quarks) there exists a duality correspondence between the chiral symmetry breaking phase and the charged pion condensation (PC) one. The role and influence of this property on the phase structure of the model are studied. Moreover, it is shown that the chemical potential $\mu_{I5}$ promotes the appearance of the charged PC phase with nonzero baryon density.

Competition and duality correspondence between chiral and superconducting channels in (2+1)-dimensional four-fermion models with fermion number and chiral chemical potentials

In this paper the duality correspondence between fermion-antifermion and difermion interaction channels is established in two (2+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu type models with a fermion number chemical potential $\mu$ and a chiral chemical potential $\mu_5$. The role and influence of this property on the phase structure of the models are investigated. In particular, it is shown that the chemical potential $\mu_5$ promotes the appearance of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, whereas the chemical potential $\mu$ contributes to the emergence of superconductivity.

Phase transitions in hexagonal, graphene-like lattice sheets and nanotubes under the influence of external conditions

In this paper we consider a class of (2+1)D schematic models with four-fermion interactions that are effectively used in studying condensed-matter systems with planar crystal structure, and especially graphene. Symmetry breaking in these models occurs due to a possible appearance of condensates. Special attention is paid to the symmetry properties of the appearing condensates in the framework of discrete chiral and $\mathcal C$, $\mathcal P$ and $\mathcal T$ transformations. Moreover, boundary conditions corresponding to carbon nanotubes are considered and their relations with the effect of an applied external magnetic field are studied. To this end we calculated the effective potential for the nanotube model including effects of finite temperature, density and an external magnetic field. As an illustration we made numerical calculations of the chiral symmetry properties in a simpler Gross--Neveu model with only one condensate taken into account. We also investigated the phase structure of the nanotube model under the influence of the Aharonov--Bohm effect and demonstrated that there is a nontrivial relation between the magnitude of the Aharonov--Bohm phase, compactification of the spatial dimension and thermal restoration of the originally broken chiral symmetry.

Interplay between superconductivity and chiral symmetry breaking in a (2+1)-dimensional model with compactified spatial coordinate

In this paper a (2+1)-dimensional model with four-fermion interactions is investigated in the case when one spatial coordinate is compactified and the space topology takes the form of an infinite cylinder, $R^1\otimes S^1$. It is supposed that the system is embedded into real three-dimensional space and that a magnetic flux $\Phi$ crosses the transverse section of the cylinder. The model includes four-fermion interactions both in the fermion-antifermion (or chiral) and fermion-fermion (or superconducting) channels. We then study phase transitions in dependence on the chemical potential $\mu$ and the flux $\Phi$ in the leading order of the large-$N$ expansion technique, where $N$ is the number of fermion fields. It is demonstrated that for arbitrary relations between coupling constants in the chiral and superconducting channels, superconductivity appears in the system at rather high values of $\mu$ (the length $L$ of the circumference $S^1$ is fixed). Moreover, it is shown that at sufficiently small values of $\mu$ the growth of the magnetic flux $\Phi$ leads to a periodical reentrance of the chiral symmetry breaking or superconducting phase, depending on the values of $\mu$ and coupling constants.

Strong decays of vector mesons to pseudoscalar mesons in the relativistic quark model

Strong decays of vector ($^3S_1$) mesons to the pair of pseudoscalar ($^1S_0$) mesons are considered in the framework of the microscopic decay mechanism and the relativistic quark model based on the quasipotential approach. The quark-antiquark potential, which was previously used for the successful description of meson spectroscopy and electroweak decays, is employed as the source of the $q\bar q$ pair creation. The relativistic structure of the decay matrix element, relativistic contributions and boosts of the meson wave functions are comprehensively taken into account. The calculated rates of strong decays of light, heavy-light mesons and heavy quarkonia agree well with available experimental data.

Competition and duality correspondence between inhomogeneous fermion-antifermion and fermion-fermion condensations in the NJL$_2$ model

We investigate the possibility of spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous chiral fermion-antifermion condensation and superconducting fermion-fermion pairing in the (1+1)-dimensional model by Chodos {\it et al.} [ Phys. Rev. D 61, 045011 (2000)] generalized to continuous chiral invariance. The consideration is performed at nonzero values of temperature $T$, electric charge chemical potential $\mu$ and chiral charge chemical potential $\mu_5$. It is shown that at $G_1 G_2$ (called duality correspondence). Under the duality transformation the (inhomogeneous) chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) phase is mapped into the (inhomogeneous) superconducting (SC) phase and vice versa. If $G_1=G_2$, then the phase structure of the model is self-dual. Nevertheless, the degeneracy between the CSB and SC phases is possible in this case only when there is a spatial inhomogeneity of condensates.

Pseudopotential model for Dirac electrons in graphene with line defects

We consider electron transport in a planar fermion model containing various types of line defects modelled by $\delta$--function pseudopotentials with different matrix coefficients. The transmission probability for electron transport through the defect line is obtained for various types of pseudopotentials. For the schematic model considered that may describe a graphene structure with different types of linear defects, the valley polarization is obtained.

Suppression of superconductivity by inhomogeneous chiral condensation in the NJL$_2$ model

We investigate the possibility of spatially inhomogeneous chiral and Cooper, or superconducting, pairing in the (1+1)-dimensional model by Chodos et al [ Phys. Rev. D61, 045011 (2000)] generalized to continuous chiral invariance. The consideration is performed at nonzero temperature $T$ and quark number chemical potential $\mu$. It is shown in the framework of the Fulde--Ferrel inhomogeneity ansatz for chiral and Cooper condensates that if $G_1>G_2$, where $G_1$ and $G_2$ are the coupling constants in the quark-antiquark and diquark channels, then in the $(\mu,T)$-phase diagram the superconducting phase is suppressed by spatially inhomogeneous chiral spiral phase with broken chiral symmetry. In contrast, in the above mentioned original Chodos et al model, where only the opportunity for homogeneous condensates were taken into account, the superconducting phase is realized at sufficiently high values of $\mu$ at arbitrary values of $G_2>0$, including the interval $0<G_2<G_1$.

Spectroscopy and Regge trajectories of heavy quarkonia and B_c mesons

The mass spectra of charmonia, bottomonia and B_c mesons are calculated in the framework of the QCD-motivated relativistic quark model based on the quasipotential approach. The dynamics of heavy quarks and antiquarks is treated fully relativistically without application of the nonrelativistic v^2/c^2 expansion. The known one-loop radiative corrections to the heavy quark potential are taken into account perturbatively. The heavy quarkonium masses are calculated up to rather high orbital and radial excitations (L=5, n_r=5). On this basis the Regge trajectories are constructed both in the total angular momentum J and radial quantum number n_r. It is found that the daughter trajectories are almost linear and parallel, while parent trajectories exhibit some nonlinearity in the low mass region. Such nonlinearity is most pronounced for bottomonia and is only marginal for charmonia. The obtained results are compared with the available experimental data, and a possible interpretation of the new charmonium-like states above open charm production threshold is discussed.

Exclusive semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of B mesons to orbitally excited light mesons

The form factors of weak decays of the B meson to orbitally excited scalar, axial vector and tensor light mesons are calculated in the framework of the QCD-motivated relativistic quark model based on the quasipotential approach. Relativistic effects are systematically taken into account. The form factors are expressed trough the overlap integrals of the meson wave functions and their dependence on the momentum transfer is selfconsistently determined in the whole kinematical range. On this basis semileptonic and two-body nonleptonic B decay rates to orbitally excited light mesons are calculated. Good agreement of the obtained predictions with available experimental data is found.

Finite-size effects in pion condensation phenomena of dense baryonic matter in the NJL$_2$ model

The properties of two-flavored massless Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in (1+1)-dimensional $R^1\times S^1$ spacetime with compactified space coordinate are investigated in the presence of isospin and quark number chemical potentials $\mu_I$, $\mu$. The consideration is performed in the large $N_c$ limit, where $N_c$ is the number of colored quarks. It is shown that at $L=\infty$ ($L$ is the length of the circumference $S^1$) the pion condensation (PC) phase with {\it zero quark number density} is realized at arbitrary nonzero $\mu_I$ and for rather small values of $\mu$. However, at arbitrary finite values of $L$ the phase portrait of the model contains the PC phase with {\it nonzero quark number density} (in the case of periodic boundary conditions for quark fields). Hence, finite sizes of the system can serve as a factor promoting the appearance of the PC phase in quark matter with nonzero baryon densities. In contrast, the phase with chiral symmetry breaking may exist only at rather large values of $L$.

Spectroscopy and Regge trajectories of heavy baryons in the relativistic quark-diquark picture

Mass spectra of heavy baryons are calculated in the heavy-quark--light-diquark picture in the framework of the QCD-motivated relativistic quark model. The dynamics of light quarks in the diquark as well as the dynamics of the heavy quark and light diquark in the baryon are treated completely relativistically without application of nonrelativistic v/c and heavy quark 1/m_Q expansions. Such approach allows us to get predictions for the heavy baryon masses for rather high orbital and radial excitations. On this basis the Regge trajectories of heavy baryons for orbital and radial excitations are constructed, and their linearity, parallelism, and equidistance are verified. The relations between the slopes and intercepts of heavy baryons are considered and a comparison of the slopes of Regge trajectories for heavy baryons and heavy-light mesons is performed. All available experimental data on heavy baryons fit nicely to the constructed Regge trajectories. The possible assignment of the quantum numbers to the observed excited charmed baryons is discussed.

Chiral density waves in the NJL$_2$ model with quark number and isospin chemical potentials

We investigate the phase portrait of the (1+1)-dimensional massless two-flavored NJL$_2$ model containing a quark number chemical potential $\mu$ and an isospin chemical potential $\mu_I$ in the limit of a large number of colors $N_c\to\infty$. Particular attention is paid to the question to what extent the inclusion of an isospin asymmetry affects chiral condensates to have a spatial inhomogeneity in the form of the so-called chiral density waves (CDW) (chiral spirals). It is shown that at zero temperature and comparatively small values of $\mu$, i.e. at $\mu<\mu_c\approx 0.68M_0$ ($M_0$ is the dynamical quark mass in the vacuum) only the homogeneous charged pion condensation phase is realized for arbitrary nonzero values of $\mu_I$. Contrary to this, for large values of $\mu>\mu_c$, two CDW phases appear in the $(\mu_I,\mu)$-phase diagram of the model. In the first phase, CDWs are clockwise twisted chiral spirals and in the second phase they are counterclockwise. The influence of nonzero temperature on the formation of the CDW phases is also investigated.

Masses of tetraquarks with open charm and bottom

The masses of the heavy tetraquarks with open charm and bottom are calculated within the diquark-antidiquark picture in the framework of the relativistic quark model. The dynamics of the light quarks and diquarks is treated completely relativistically. The diquark structure is taken into account by calculating the diquark-gluon form factor. New experimental data on charmed and charmed-strange mesons are discussed. Our results indicate that the anomalous scalar D_{s0}^*(2317) and axial vector D_{s1}(2460) mesons could not be considered as diquark-antidiquark bound states. On the other hand, D_s(2632) and D_{sJ}^*(2860) could be interpreted as scalar and tensor tetraquarks, respectively. The predictions for masses of the corresponding bottom counterparts of the charmed tetraquarks are given.

Semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of B_c mesons to orbitally excited heavy mesons in the relativistic quark model

The form factors of weak decays of the B_c meson to orbitally excited charmonium, D, B_s and B mesons are calculated in the framework of the QCD-motivated relativistic quark model based on the quasipotential approach. Relativistic effects are systematically taken into account. The form factor dependence on the momentum transfer is reliably determined in the whole kinematical range. The form factors are expressed trough the overlap integrals of the meson wave functions which are known from the previous mass spectra calculations within the same model. On this basis semileptonic and nonleptonic B_c decay rates to orbitally excited heavy mesons are calculated. Predictions for the B_c decays to the orbitally and radially excited 2P and 3S charmonium states are given which could be used for clarifying the nature of the recently observed charmonium-like states above the open charm production threshold.
