On the uniqueness of the equation for state-vector collapse

The linearity of quantum mechanics leads, under the assumption that the wave function offers a complete description of reality, to grotesque situations famously known as Schroedinger's cat. Ways out are either adding elements of reality or replacing the linear evolution by a nonlinear one. Models of spontaneous wave function collapses took the latter path. The way such models are constructed leaves the question, whether such models are in some sense unique, i.e. whether the nonlinear equations replacing Schroedinger's equation, are uniquely determined as collapse equations. Various people worked on identifying the class of nonlinear modifications of the Schroedinger equation, compatible with general physical requirements. Here we identify the most general class of continuous wavefunction evolutions under the assumption of no-faster-than-light signalling.

Quantum Dynamics with Bohmian Trajectories

We describe the advantages and disadvantages of numerical methods when Bohmian trajectory-grids are used for numerical simulations of quantum dynamics. We focus on the crucial non crossing property of Bohmian trajectories, which numerically must be paid careful attention to. Failure to do so causes instabilities or leads to false simulations.

Spontaneous Pair Creation Revisited

Recently the so called Spontaneous Pair Creation of electron positron pairs in a strong external field has been rigorously established. We give here the heuristic core of the proof, since the results differ from those given in earlier works.

Asymptotic Behavior of Bohmian Trajectories in Scattering Situations

We study the asymptotic behavior of Bohmian trajectories in a scattering situation with short range potential and for wave functions with a scattering and a bound part. It is shown that the set of possible trajectories splits into trajectories whose long time behavior is governed by the scattering part of the wave function (scattering trajectories) and trajectories whose long time behavior is governed by the bound part of the wave function (bound trajectories). Furthermore the scattering trajectories behave like trajectories in classical mechanics in the long time limit. As an intermediate step we show that the asymptotic velocity v_{infty}:=lim_{t to infty}Q/t exists almost surely and is randomly distributed with the density |hat{Psi}^{out}|^2, where Psi^{out} is the outgoing asymptote of the scattering part of the wave function.

Decoherence in a Two-Particle Model

We consider a simple one dimensional quantum system consisting of a heavy and a light particle interacting via a point interaction. The initial state is chosen to be a product state, with the heavy particle described by a coherent superposition of two spatially separated wave packets with opposite momentum and the light particle localized in the region between the two wave packets. We characterize the asymptotic dynamics of the system in the limit of small mass ratio, with an explicit control of the error. We derive the corresponding reduced density matrix for the heavy particle and explicitly compute the (partial) decoherence effect for the heavy particle induced by the presence of the light one for a particular set up of the parameters.

Flux-Across-Surfaces Theorem for a Dirac Particle

We consider the asymptotic evolution of a relativistic spin-1/2-particle. i.e. a particle whose wavefunction satisfies the Dirac equation with external static potential. We prove that the probability for the particle crossing a (detector) surface converges to the probability, that the direction of the momentum of the particle lies within the solid angle defined by the (detector) surface, as the distance of the surface goes to infinity. This generalizes earlier non relativistic results, known as flux across surfaces theorems, to the relativistic regime.

Hypersurface Bohm-Dirac models

We define a class of Lorentz invariant Bohmian quantum models for N entangled but noninteracting Dirac particles. Lorentz invariance is achieved for these models through the incorporation of an additional dynamical space-time structure provided by a foliation of space-time. These models can be regarded as the extension of Bohm's model for N Dirac particles, corresponding to the foliation into the equal-time hyperplanes for a distinguished Lorentz frame, to more general foliations. As with Bohm's model, there exists for these models an equivariant measure on the leaves of the foliation. This makes possible a simple statistical analysis of position correlations analogous to the equilibrium analysis for (the nonrelativistic) Bohmian mechanics.

On the quantum probability flux through surfaces

We remark that the often ignored quantum probability current is fundamental for a genuine understanding of scattering phenomena and, in particular, for the statistics of the time and position of the first exit of a quantum particle from a given region, which may be simply expressed in terms of the current. This simple formula for these statistics does not appear as such in the literature. It is proposed that the formula, which is very different from the usual quantum mechanical measurement formulas, be verified experimentally. A full understanding of the quantum current and the associated formula is provided by Bohmian mechanics.

EPR-Bell Nonlocality, Lorentz Invariance, and Bohmian Quantum Theory

We discuss the problem of finding a Lorentz invariant extension of Bohmian mechanics. Due to the nonlocality of the theory there is (for systems of more than one particle) no obvious way to achieve such an extension. We present a model invariant under a certain limit of Lorentz transformations, a limit retaining the characteristic feature of relativity, the non-existence of absolute time resp. simultaneity. The analysis of this model exemplifies an important property of any Bohmian quantum theory: the quantum equilibrium distribution $ρ= |ψ|^2$ cannot simultaneously be realized in all Lorentz frames of reference.
