Subdifferentiable functions satisfy Lusin properties of class $C^1$ or $C^2$

Let $f:\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}$ be a function. Assume that for a measurable set $\Omega$ and almost every $x\in\Omega$ there exists a vector $\xi_x\in\mathbb{R}^n$ such that $$\liminf_{h\to 0}\frac{f(x+h)-f(x)-\langle \xi_x, h\rangle}{|h|^2}>-\infty.$$ Then we show that $f$ satisfies a Lusin-type property of order $2$ in $\Omega$, that is to say, for every $\varepsilon>0$ there exists a function $g\in C^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ such that $\mathcal{L}^{n}\left(\{x\in\Omega : f(x)\neq g(x)\}\right)\leq\varepsilon$. In particular every function which has a nonempty proximal subdifferential almost everywhere also has the Lusin property of class $C^2$. We also obtain a similar result (replacing $C^2$ with $C^1$) for the Fr\'echet subdifferential. Finally we provide some examples showing that this kind of results are no longer true for "Taylor subexpansions" of higher order.

The Morse-Sard theorem revisited

Let $n, m, k$ be positive integers with $k=n-m+1$. We establish an abstract Morse-Sard-type theorem which allows us to deduce, on the one hand, a previous result of De Pascale's for Sobolev $W^{k,p}_{\textrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m)$ functions with $p>n$ and, on the other hand, also the following new result: if $f\in C^{k-1}(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m)$ satisfies $$\limsup_{h\to 0}\frac{|D^{k-1}f(x+h)-D^{k-1}f(x)|}{|h|}<\infty$$ for every $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$ (that is, $D^{k-1}f$ is a Stepanov function), then the set of critical values of $f$ is Lebesgue-null in $\mathbb{R}^m$. In the case that $m=1$ we also show that this limiting condition holding for every $x\in\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\mathcal{N}$, where $\mathcal{N}$ is a set of zero $(n-2+\alpha)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure for some $0<\alpha<1$, is sufficient to guarantee the same conclusion.

Global approximation of convex functions

Let $U\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}$ be open and convex. We show that every (not necessarily Lipschitz or strongly) convex function $f:U\to\mathbb{R}$ can be approximated by real analytic convex functions, uniformly on all of $U$. In doing so we provide a technique which transfers results on uniform approximation on bounded sets to results on uniform approximation on unbounded sets, in such a way that not only convexity and $C^k$ smoothness, but also local Lipschitz constants, minimizers, order, and strict or strong convexity, are preserved. This transfer method is quite general and it can also be used to obtain new results on approximation of convex functions defined on Riemannian manifolds or Banach spaces. We also provide a characterization of the class of convex functions which can be uniformly approximated on $\mathbb{R}^n$ by strongly convex functions. Finally, we give some counterexamples showing that $C^0$-fine approximation of convex functions by smooth convex functions is not possible on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ whenever $n\geq 2$.

Real analytic approximation of Lipschitz functions on Hilbert space and other Banach spaces

Let $X$ be a separable Banach space with a separating polynomial. We show that there exists $C\geq 1$ (depending only on $X$) such that for every Lipschitz function $f:X\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$, and every $\epsilon>0$, there exists a Lipschitz, real analytic function $g:X\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ such that $|f(x)-g(x)|\leq \epsilon$ and $\textrm{Lip}(g)\leq C\textrm{Lip}(f)$. This result is new even in the case when $X$ is a Hilbert space. Furthermore, in the Hilbertian case we also show that $C$ can be assumed to be any number greater than 1.

Generalized motion of level sets by functions of their curvatures on Riemannian manifolds

We consider the generalized evolution of compact level sets by functions of their normal vectors and second fundamental forms on a Riemannian manifold M. The level sets of a function $u:M\to\mathbb{R}$ evolve in such a way whenever u solves an equation $u_{t}+F(Du, D^{2}u)=0$, for some real function F satisfying a geometric condition. We show existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to this equation under the assumptions that M has nonnegative curvature, F is continuous off Du=0, (degenerate) elliptic, and locally invariant by parallel translation. We then prove that this approach is geometrically consistent, hence it allows to define a generalized evolution of level sets by very general, singular functions of their curvatures. For instance, these assumptions on F are satisfied when F is given by the evolutions of level sets by their mean curvature (even in arbitrary codimension) or by their positive Gaussian curvature. We also prove that the generalized evolution is consistent with the classical motion by the corresponding function of the curvature, whenever the latter exists. When M is not of nonnegative curvature, the same results hold if one additionally requires that F is uniformly continuous with respect to D^2 u. Finally we give some counterexamples showing that several well known properties of the evolutions in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ are no longer true when M has negative sectional curvature.

Smooth Approximation of Lipschitz functions on Riemannian manifolds

We show that for every Lipschitz function $f$ defined on a separable Riemannian manifold $M$ (possibly of infinite dimension), for every continuous $ε:M\to (0,+\infty)$, and for every positive number $r>0$, there exists a $C^\infty$ smooth Lipschitz function $g:M\to\mathbb{R}$ such that $|f(p)-g(p)|\leqε(p)$ for every $p\in M$ and $\textrm{Lip}(g)\leq\textrm{Lip}(f)+r$. Consequently, every separable Riemannian manifold is uniformly bumpable. We also present some applications of this result, such as a general version for separable Riemannian manifolds of Deville-Godefroy-Zizler's smooth variational principle.

Approximation by smooth functions with no critical points on separable Banach spaces

We characterize the class of separable Banach spaces $X$ such that for every continuous function $f:X\to\mathbb{R}$ and for every continuous function $ε:X\to\mathbb(0,+\infty)$ there exists a $C^1$ smooth function $g:X\to\mathbb{R}$ for which $|f(x)-g(x)|\leqε(x)$ and $g'(x)\neq 0$ for all $x\in X$ (that is, $g$ has no critical points), as those Banach spaces $X$ with separable dual $X^*$. We also state sufficient conditions on a separable Banach space so that the function $g$ can be taken to be of class $C^p$, for $p=1,2,..., +\infty$. In particular, we obtain the optimal order of smoothness of the approximating functions with no critical points on the classical spaces $\ell_p(\mathbb{N})$ and $L_p(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Some important consequences of the above results are (1) the existence of {\em a non-linear Hahn-Banach theorem} and (2) the smooth approximation of closed sets, on the classes of spaces considered above.
