ZIF-90 treats fungal keratitis by promoting macrophage apoptosis and inhibiting inflammatory response

Fungal keratitis is a severe vision-threatening corneal infection with a prognosis influenced by fungal virulence and the host's immune defense mechanisms. The immune system, through its regulation of the inflammatory response, ensures cells and tissues can effectively activate defense mechanisms in response to infection and injury. However, there is still a lack of effective drugs that attenuate fungal virulence while relieving the inflammatory response caused by fungal keratitis. Therefore, finding effective treatments to solve these problems is particularly important. We synthesized ZIF-90 by water-based synthesis and characterized by SEM, XRD etc. In vitro experiments included CCK-8 and ELISA. These evaluations verified the disruptive effects of ZIF-90 on Aspergillus. fumigatus spore adhesion, morphology, cell membrane, and the effect of ZIF-90 on apoptosis. In addition, to investigate whether the metal-ligand zinc and the organic ligand imidazole act as essential factors in ZIF-90, we investigated the in vitro antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and MOF-74 (Zn) by MIC and ELISA experiments. ZIF-90 has therapeutic effects on fungal keratitis, which could break the protective organelles of Aspergillus. fumigatus, such as the cell wall. In addition, ZIF-90 can avoid excessive inflammatory response by promoting apoptosis of inflammatory cells. The results demonstrated that both zinc ions and imidazole possessed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, ZIF-90 exhibited better biocompatibility compared to ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and MOF-74 (Zn). ZIF-90 has anti-inflammatory and antifungal effects and preferable biocompatibility, and has great potential for the treatment of fungal keratitis.

Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 offers an anti-inflammatory and antifungal method in the treatment of Aspergillus fungus keratitis in vitro and in vivo

Background: Fungal keratitis is a serious blinding eye disease. Traditional drugs used to treat fungal keratitis commonly have the disadvantages of low bioavailability, poor dispersion, and limited permeability. Purpose: To develop a new method for the treatment of fungal keratitis with improved bioavailability, dispersion, and permeability. Purpose: To develop a new method for the treatment of fungal keratitis with improved bioavailability, dispersion, and permeability. Methods: Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) was formed by zinc ions and 2-methylimidazole linked by coordination bonds and characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Zeta potential. The safety of ZIF-8 on HCECs and RAW 264.7 cells was detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8). The anti-inflammatory effects of ZIF-8 on RAW 246.7 cells were evaluated by Quantitative Real-Time PCR Experiments (qPCR) and Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical score, Colony-Forming Units (CFU). In vivo, treatment with ZIF-8 reduced corneal fungal load and mitigated neutrophil infiltration in fungal keratitis, which effectively reduced the severity of keratitis in mice and alleviated the infiltration of inflammatory factors in the mouse cornea. In addition, ZIF-8 reduces the inflammatory response by downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-{\alpha}, IL-6, and IL-1\b{eta} after Aspergillus fumigatus infection in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion: ZIF-8 has a significant anti-inflammatory and antifungal effect, which provides a new solution for the treatment of fungal keratitis.

Non-uniform continuity on initial data for the two-component b-family system in Besov space

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of a two-component b-family system, which includes the two-component Camassa-Holm system and the two-component Degasperis-Procesi system. It is shown that the solution map of the two-component b-family system is not uniformly continuous on the initial data in Besov spaces $B_{p, r}^{s-1}(\mathbb{R})\times B_{p, r}^s(\mathbb{R})$ with $s>\max\{1+\frac{1}{p}, \frac{3}{2}\}$, $1\leq p, r< \infty$. Our result covers and extends the previous non-uniform continuity in Sobolev spaces $H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R})\times H^s(\mathbb{R})$ for $s>\frac{5}{2}$ (Nonlinear Anal., 2014) to Besov spaces.

Seamless maps of major elements of the Moon: Results from high-resolution geostationary satellite

Major elements such as Fe, Ti, Mg, Al, Ca, and Si play very important roles in understanding the origin and evolution of the Moon. Previous maps of these major elements derived from orbital data are based on mosaic images or low-resolution Gamma ray data. The hue variations and gaps among orbital boundaries in the mosaic images are not conducive to geological studies. This paper aims to produce seamless and homogenous distribution maps of major elements using the single-exposure image of the whole lunar disk obtained by China's high-resolution geostationary satellite, Gaofen-4, with a spatial resolution of ~500 m. The elemental contents of soil samples returned by Apollo and Luna missions were used as ground truth, and were correlated with the reflectance of the sampling sites extracted from Gaofen-4 data. The final distribution maps of these major oxides are generated with the statistical regression model. With these products the average contents and proportions of the major elements for maria and highlands were estimated and compared. The results showed that SiO2 and TiO2 have the highest and lowest fractions in mare and highland areas, respectively. Besides, the relative concentrations of these elements could serve as indicators of geologic processes, e.g., the obviously asymmetric distributions of Al2O3, CaO, and SiO2 around Tycho crater may suggest that Tycho crater was formed by an oblique impact from the southwest direction.

Unveiling the secrets of the mid-infrared Moon

The Moon's optical characteristics in visible and long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) have long been observed with our eyes or with instruments. What the mid-infrared (MIR) Moon looks like is still a mystery. For the first time we present detailed appearance of the MIR Moon observed by a high-resolution geostationary satellite and reveal the essence behind its appearance. The appearance of the MIR Moon is opposite to its normal visible appearance. In addition the MIR Moon shows limb darkening. Both the absolute and the relative brightness distribution of the MIR lunar disk changes with the solar incidence angle. The signatures of the MIR Moon are controlled by both the reflection and emission of the lunar surface. We also show first-ever brightness temperature maps of the lunar disk without needing a mosaic, which better show the temperature variation across the lunar disk. They reveal that the relationship between brightness temperature and solar incidence angle i is cos1/bi, and the power parameter is smaller than the Lambertian temperature model of cos1/4i observed for lunar orbit-based measurements. The slower decrease of the brightness temperature when moving away from the sub-solar point than the Lambertian model is due to topographic effects. The brightness temperature is dominated by albedo and the solar incidence angle and influenced by the topography. Our results indicate that the Moon in the MIR exhibits many interesting phenomena which were previously unknown, and contains abundant information about lunar reflection and thermal emission for future study.

Spin polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in $e^+e^-\to\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ at BESIII

The BESIII collaboration here reports the first observation of polarized $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons produced in two different processes: i) the resonant $e^+e^- \to J/\psi\to\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$, using a data sample of 1.31 $\times$ 10$^9$ $J/\psi$ events and ii) the non-resonant $e^+e^-\to \gamma^* \to \Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$, using a 66.9 pb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at $\sqrt{s} =$ 2.396 GeV. In $e^+e^-\to J/\psi\to\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$, the phase between the electric and the magnetic amplitude is measured for the first time to be $42.3^{\mathrm{o}} \pm 0.6^{\mathrm{o}} \pm 0.5^{\mathrm{o}}$. The multi-dimensional analysis enables a model-independent measurement of the decay parameters for $\Lambda\to p\pi^-$ ($\alpha_-$), $\bar{\Lambda}\to\bar{p}\pi^+$ ($\alpha_+$) and $\bar{\Lambda}\to\bar{n}\pi^0$ ($\bar{\alpha}_0$). The obtained value $\alpha_-=0.750\pm0.009\pm0.004$ differs with ~5$\sigma$ from the PDG value. This value, together with the measurement $\alpha_+=-0.758\pm0.010\pm0.007$ allow for the most precise test of CP violation in $\Lambda$ decays so far: $A_{CP} = (\alpha_- + \alpha_+)/(\alpha_- - \alpha_+)$ of $-0.006\pm0.012\pm0.007$. The decay asymmetry $\bar{\alpha}_0 = -0.692\pm0.016\pm0.006$ is measured for the first time. The $e^+e^- \to \Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ reaction at $\sqrt{s} =$ 2.396 GeV enables a first complete measurement of the time-like electric and magnetic form factor of any baryon, of the modulus of the ratio $R=|G_E/G_M|$ and of the relative phase $\Delta\Phi=\Phi_E-\Phi_M$. With the decay asymmetry parameters from the $J/\psi$ data, the obtained values are $R=0.96\pm0.14\pm0.02$ and $\Delta\Phi = 37^{\mathrm{o}} \pm 12^{\mathrm{o}} \pm 6^{\mathrm{o}}$. In addition, the cross section has been measured with unprecedented precision to be $\sigma = 119.0\pm 5.3\pm5.1$ pb, which corresponds to an effective form factor of $|G|=0.123 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.003$.

Unidirectional, dual-comb lasing under multiple pulse formation mechanisms in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser

Dual-comb lasers from which asynchronous ultrashort pulses can be simultaneously generated have recently become an interesting research subject. They could be an intriguing alternative to the current dual-laser optical-frequency-comb source with highly sophisticated electronic control systems. If generated through a common light path traveled by all pulses, the common-mode noises between the spectral lines of different pulse trains could be significantly reduced. Therefore, coherent dual-comb generation from a completely common-path, unidirectional lasing cavity would be an interesting territory to explore. In this paper, we demonstrate such a dual-comb lasing scheme based on a nanomaterial saturable absorber with additional pulse narrowing and broadening mechanisms concurrently introduced into a mode-locked fiber laser. The interactions between multiple soliton formation mechanisms result in unusual bifurcation into two-pulse states with quite different characteristics. Simultaneous oscillation of pulses with four-fold difference in pulsewidths and tens of Hz repetition rate difference is observed. The coherence between these spectral-overlapped, picosecond and femtosecond pulses is further verified by the corresponding asynchronous cross-sampling and dual-comb spectroscopy measurements.

Picometer-resolution dual-comb spectroscopy with a free-running fibre laser

Dual-comb spectroscopy utilizes two sets of comb lines with slightly different comb-tooth-spacings, and optical spectral information is acquired by measuring the radio-frequency beat notes between the sets of comb lines. It holds the promise as a real-time, high-resolution analytical spectroscopy tool for a range of applications. However, the stringent requirement on the coherence between comb lines from two separate lasers and the sophisticated control system to achieve that have confined the technology to the top metrology laboratories. By replacing control electronics with an all-optical dual-comb lasing scheme, a simplified dual-comb spectroscopy scheme is demonstrated using just one dual-wavelength, passively mode-locked fiber laser. Dual-comb pulses with a repetition-frequency difference determined by the intracavity dispersion are shown to be sufficiently stable against common-mode cavity drifts and noises. As sufficiently low relative linewidth is maintained between two sets of comb lines, capability to resolve RF beat notes between comb teeth and picometer-wide optical spectral features is demonstrated using a simple data acquisition and processing system in an all-fiber setup. Possibility to use energy-efficient, free-running fiber lasers with a small comb-tooth-spacing could enable the realization of low-cost dual-comb spectroscopy systems affordable to more applications.

Search for hadronic transition $\chi_{cJ}\to\eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ and observation of $\chi_{cJ}\to K\bar{K}\pi\pi\pi$

Hadronic transitions of $\chi_{cJ}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ (J=0, 1, 2) are searched for using a sample of $1.06\times 10^{8}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The $\etac$ is reconstructed with $K_{S}^{0}K^{+}\pi^{-}+c.c.$ and $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0}$ final states. No signals are observed in any of the three $\chi_{cJ}$ states in either $\etac$ decay mode. At the 90% confidence level, the upper limits are determined to be $\BR(\chi_{c0}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})<0.07%$, $\BR(\chi_{c1}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})<0.32%$, and $\BR(\chi_{c2}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})<0.54%$. The upper limit of $\BR(\chi_{c1}\to \eta_{c}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ is lower than the existing theoretical prediction by almost an order of magnitude. The branching fractions of $\chi_{cJ}\to K_{S}^{0}K^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}+c.c.$, $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$, $\omega K^{+}K^{-}$ and $\phi\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ (J=0, 1, 2) are measured for the first time.

Observation of $e^{+}e^{-} \to \eta J/\psi$ at center-of-mass energy $sqrt{s}=4.009$ GeV

Using a 478 pb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.009$ GeV, the production of $e^{+}e^{-}\to \eta J\psi$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of greater than $10\sigma$. The Born cross section is measured to be $(32.1\pm 2.8 \pm 1.3)$ pb, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Assuming the $\eta J\psi$ signal is from a hadronic transition of the $\psi(4040)$, the fractional transition rate is determined to be ${\cal B}(\psi(4040)\to \eta J\psi)=(5.2\pm 0.5\pm 0.2\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first, second, and third errors are statistical, systematic, and the uncertainty from the $\psi(4040)$ resonant parameters, respectively. The production of $e^{+}e^{-} \to \pi^0 J\psi$ is searched for, but no significant signal is observed, and ${\cal B}(\psi(4040)\to \pi^0 J\psi) < 2.8 \times 10^{-4}$ is obtained at the 90% confidence level.

First observation of $\eta(1405)$ decays into $f_{0}(980)\pi^0$

The decays $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \pi^0\pi^0\pi^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $\eta(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)\pi^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decay rates for three-pion decays of the $\eta'$ are also measured precisely.

Observation of $\chi_{c1}$ decays into vector meson pairs $\phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$, and $\omega\phi$

Decays of $\chi_{c1}$ to vector meson pairs $\phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$ and $\omega\phi$ are observed for the first time using $(106\pm4)\times 10^6$ $\psip$ events accumulated at the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions are measured to be $(4.4\pm 0.3\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-4}$, $(6.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}$, and $(2.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-5}$, for $\chi_{c1}\to \phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$, and $\omega\phi$, respectively. The observation of $\chi_{c1}$ decays into a pair of vector mesons $\phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$ and $\omega\phi$ indicates that the hadron helicity selection rule is significantly violated in $\chi_{cJ}$ decays. In addition, the measurement of $\chi_{cJ}\to \omega\phi$ gives the rate of doubly OZI-suppressed decay. Branching fractions for $\chi_{c0}$ and $\chi_{c2}$ decays into other vector meson pairs are also measured with improved precision.
