Pressure and temperature relaxation limit for a one-velocity Baer-Nunziato model

The dynamics of two-phase flows out of mechanical and thermal equilibrium are described by a partially dissipative first-order quasilinear system with stiff interaction terms associated with fast relaxation scales. In this paper, we analyze from a mathematical point of view the resulting pressure and temperature relaxation singular limit problem for a one velocity Baer-Nunziato model. This leads to a singular limit problem involving two small parameters. We propose a uniform symmetrization of this system which allows us to justify the strong relaxation limit and to establish a convergence rate for classical solutions.

A variational approach to the derivation of reduced models for bubbly flows

In this paper, we derive reduced models for the motion of gas bubbles in an ambient inviscid liquid, using Hamilton's least action principle. We first explain how to recover from this principle the classical sharp interface model, in which the pressure is continuous across the surfaces of the bubbles. We then show how to reduce the complexity of the model, by simplifying the description of those surfaces. Namely, we impose them to evolve within a subclass of hypersurfaces described by a finite number of parameters (the simplest example being spheres, that is neglecting deviation of the bubbles from sphericity). The difficulty from a mathematical and modeling point of view is to determine the interface conditions that substitute to pressure continuity. We complete the derivation of the reduced models by some well-posedness analysis, in the case of curl-free liquid flow and homogeneous pressure in the bubbles.

On the relaxation towards mechanical equilibrium for two-pressure compressible flows

We introduce a symmetrization of a one-velocity two-pressures Baer-Nunziato type model for mixtures of barotropic compressible fluids. It allows us to justify the zero compaction viscosity limit and to recover a solution of the so-called Kapila model. On the other hand, the symmetrization highlights a pressure-induced stabilization mechanism which allows us to recover a global-in-time existence result for initial data close to constant states.

Weak solutions of a viscous model for fluid-bubbles interaction

We present a system of Navier-Stokes type that describes the dynamics of several spherical bubbles of gas in a liquid. It is derived from a more complete model, where the bubbles are seen as inclusions of gas of homogeneous barotropic pressure with free surfaces. The usual condition of continuity of the stress is relaxed in order to preserve the sphericity of the bubbles through time. We construct weak solutions \`a la Leray for this relaxed system, up to collision between the bubbles. Although these solutions are reminiscent of weak solutions for fluid-solid interaction systems, accounting for the compression/dilation of the bubbles creates new and significant mathematical difficulties.

Discontinuous shear-thickening asymptotic for power-law systems related to compressible flows

In this paper we study the convergence of a power-law model for dilatant compressible fluids to a class of models exhibiting a maximum admissible shear rate, called thick compressible fluids. These kinds of problems were studied previously for elliptic equations, stating with the work of Bhattacharya, E. DiBenedetto and J. Manfredi [Rend. Sem. Mat. Univ. Politec. Torino 1989], and more recently for incompressible fluids by J.F. Rodrigues [J. Math. Sciences 2015]. Our result may be seen as an extension to the compressible setting of these previous works. Physically, this is motivated by the fact that the pressures generated during a squeezing flow are often large, potentially requiring the consideration of compressibility, see M. Fang and R. Gilbert [Z. Anal. Anwend 2004]. Mathematically, the main difficulty in the compressible setting concerns the strong hyperbolicparabolic coupling between the density and velocity field. We obtain two main results, the first concerning the one-dimensional non-stationary compressible power-law system while the second one concerns the semi-stationary multi-dimensional case. Finally, we present an extension in onedimension for a viscous Cauchy stress with singular dependence on the shear rate.

Weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations for steady compressible non-Newtonian fluids

We prove the existence of weak solutions to steady, compressible non-Newtonian Navier-Stokes system on a bounded, two- or three-dimensional domain. Assuming the viscous stress tensor is monotone satisfying a power-law growth with power $r$ and the pressure is given by $\varrho^\gamma$, we construct a solution provided that $r>\frac{3d}{d+2}$ and $\gamma$ is sufficiently large, depending on the values of $r$. Additionally, we also show the existence for time-discretized model for Herschel-Bulkley fluids, where the viscosity has a singular part.

Concentration in an advection-diffusion model with diffusion coefficient depending on the past trajectory

We consider a drift-diffusion model, with an unknown function depending on the spatial variable and an additional structural variable, the amount of ingested lipid. The diffusion coefficient depends on this additional variable. The drift acts on this additional variable, with a power-law coefficient of the additional variable and a localization function in space. It models the dynamics of a population of macrophage cells. Lipids are located in a given region of space; when cells pass through this region, they internalize some lipids. This leads to a problem whose mathematical novelty is the dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the past trajectory. We discuss global existence and blow-up of the solution.

Extension of the Hoff solutions framework to cover Navier-Stokes equations for a compressible fluid with anisotropic viscous-stress tensor

This paper deals with the Navier-Stokes system governing the evolution of a compressible barotropic fluid. We extend D. Hoff's intermediate regularity solutions framework by relaxing the integrability needed for the initial density which is usually assumed to be $L^{\infty}$. By achieving this, we are able to take into account general fourth order symmetric viscous-stress tensors with coefficients depending smoothly on the time-space variables. More precisely, in space dimensions $d=2,3$, under periodic boundary conditions, considering a pressure law $p(ρ)=aρ^γ$ whith $a>0$ respectively $γ\geq d/(4-d)$) and under the assumption that the norms of the initial data $\left( ρ_{0}-M,u_{0}\right) \in L^{2γ}\left(\mathbb{T}^{d}\right) \times(H^{1}(\mathbb{T}^{d}))^{d}$ are sufficiently small, we are able to construct global weak solutions. Above, $M$ denotes the total mass of the fluid while $\mathbb{T}$ with $d=2,3$ stands for periodic box. When comparing to the results known for the global weak solutions à la Leray, i.e. constructed assuming only the basic energy bounds, we obtain a relaxed condition on the range of admissible adiabatic coefficients $γ$.

Global Existence of Weak Solutions for the Anisotropic Compressible Stokes System

In this paper, we study the problem of global existence of weak solutions for the quasi-stationary compressible Stokes equations with an anisotropic viscous tensor. The key element of our proof is the control of a particular defect measure associated to the pressure which avoids the use of the eective ux. Using this new tool, we solve an open problem namely global existence of solutions {à} la Leray for such a system without assuming any restriction on the anisotropy amplitude. It provides a exible and natural way to treat compressible quasilinear Stokes systems which are important for instance in biology, porous media, supra-conductivity or other applications in the low Reynolds number regime.

Vanishing capillarity limit of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system in one dimension with degenerate viscosity coefficient and discontinuous initial density

In the first main result of this paper we prove that one can approximate discontinious solutions of the 1d Navier Stokes system with solutions of the 1d Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system as the capilarity parameter tends to 0. Moreover, we allow the viscosity coefficients $μ$ = $μ$ ($ρ$) to degenerate near vaccum. In order to obtain this result, we propose two main technical novelties. First of all, we provide an upper bound for the density verifing NSK that does not degenerate when the capillarity coefficient tends to 0. Second of all, we are able to show that the positive part of the effective velocity is bounded uniformly w.r.t. the capillary coefficient. This turns out to be crucial in providing a lower bound for the density. The second main result states the existene of unique finite-energy global strong solutions for the 1d Navier-Stokes system assuming only that $ρ$0, 1/$ρ$0 $\in$ L $\infty$. This last result finds itself a natural application in the context of the mathematical modeling of multiphase flows.

Physical Relaxation Terms for Compressible Two-Phase Systems

In this note, we propose the first mathematical derivation of a macroscopic Baer-Nunziato type system for compressible two-phase flows allowing two pressure state laws depending on the different phases. By doing so, we extend the results obtained by the first author and M. Hillairet (Annales ENS 2019) to cover this important physical situation. A relaxation term in the mass fraction equation is obtained without closure assumptions contrarily to theoretical-physics literature dedicated to mixture theory, see for instance "Thermo-Fluid dynamics of Two Fluid Flows" by M. Ishii. The relaxation parameter is linked to the viscosities of the different fluids (which may be small for applications) and the relaxed quantity is linked to the laws chosen at interfaces of the two-fluid system at a mesoscale.

Weak Solutions for the Stationary Anisotropic and Nonlocal Compressible Navier-Stokes System

In this paper, we prove global existence of weak solutions for the stationary compressible Navier-Stokes equations with an anisotropic and nonlocal viscous term in a periodic domain. This gives an answer to an open problem important for applications in geophysics or in microuidics. The main idea is to adapt in a non-trivial way the new idea developped by the authors in a previous paper, see [2] which allowed them to treat the anisotropic compressible quasi-stationary Stokes system.

New effective pressure and existence of global strong solution for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with general viscosity coefficient in one dimension

In this paper we prove the existence of global strong solution for the Navier-Stokes equations with general degenerate viscosity coefficients. The cornerstone of the proof is the introduction of a new effective pressure which allows to obtain an Oleinik-type estimate for the so called effective velocity. In our proof we make use of additional regularizing effects on the velocity which requires to extend the technics developed by Hoff for the constant viscosity case.

Discrete energy estimates for the abcd-systems

In this article, we propose finite volume schemes for the $abcd$-systems and we establish stability and error estimates. The order of accuracy depends on the so-called BBM-type dispersion coefficients $b$ and $d$. If $bd>0$, the numerical schemes are $O(\Delta t+(\Delta x)^2)$ accurate, while if $bd=0$, we obtain an $O(\Delta t+\Delta x)$ -order of convergence. The analysis covers a broad range of the parameters $a,b,c,d$. In the second part of the paper, numerical experiments validating the theoretical results as well as head-on collision of traveling waves are investigated.

Lagragian methods for a general inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with variable capillarity and viscosity coefficients

We study the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system endowed with a general capillary term. Thanks to recent methods based on Lagrangian change of variables, we obtain local well-posedness in critical Besov spaces (even if the integration index p is different from 2) and for variable viscosity and capillary terms. In the case of constant coefficients and for initial data that are perturbations of a constant state, we are able to prove that the lifespan goes to infinity as the capillary coefficient goes to zero, connecting our result to the global existence result obtained by Danchin and Mucha for the incompressible Navier-Stokes system with constant coefficients.

Optimal well-posedness for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with general viscosity

In this paper we obtain new well-possedness results concerning a linear inhomogenous Stokes-like system. These results are used to establish local well-posedness in the critical spaces for initial density $ρ_{0}$ and velocity $u_{0}$ such that $ρ_{0}-ρ\in\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac{3}{p}}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$, $u_{0}\in\dot{B}_{p,1}^{\frac{3}{p}-1}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$, $p\in\left( \frac{6}{5},4\right) $, for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with variable viscosity. To the best of our knowledge, regarding the $3D$ case, this is the first result in a truly critical framework for which one does not assume any smallness condition on the density.

Long time existence results for bore-type initial data for BBM-Boussinesq systems

In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to BBM-type Boussinesq systems of equations which are asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface water waves. As opposed to previous papers devoted to the long time existence issue, we consider initial data with nontrivial behaviour at innity which may be used to model bore propagation.

New long time existence results for a class of Boussinesq-type systems

In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to some asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface waves. We generalize some of the results that can be found in the literature devoted to the study of Boussinesq systems by implementing an energy method on spectrally localized equations. In particular, we obtain better results in terms of the regularity level required to solve the initial value problem on large time scales.
