Linear completeness of trajectories in Sobolev spaces and the symmetrised polydisk

We establish a framework to determine the linear completeness of families of non-linear trajectories in Hilbert spaces, which relies on an infinite analytic block Toeplitz operator formulation. By means of this approach, we show the linear completeness in Sobolev spaces of two families of classical functions. One is the moving family of dilated Weierstrass functions. The other is the family of eigenfunctions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with trapping potential in an infinite square well. Our results provide a new insight on the formulation of general methods to examine this intriguing concept, bridging classical non-linear analysis and linear approximation theory.

Models of holomorphic functions on the symmetrized skew bidisc

The purpose of this paper is to develop the theory of holomorphic functions with modulus bounded by $1$ on the symmetrized skew bidisc \[ \mathbb{G}_{r} \stackrel{\rm def}{=} \Big\{( \lambda_{1}+r\lambda_{2} ,r\lambda_{1}\lambda_{2}): \lambda_{1}\in \mathbb{D}, \lambda_{2}\in\mathbb{D}\Big\}, \] for a fixed $r \in (0,1)$. We show the existence of a realization formula and a model formula for such holomorphic functions.

Hilbert space models and Blaschke frames

For a finite Blaschke product $B$ and for an isometry $V$ on an infinite-dimensional separable complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ we study a sequence $(b_m)_{m=1}^\infty$ of vectors in $\mathcal{H}$, defined by $b_m = B(V^*)e_m$, where $(e_m)_{m=1}^\infty$ is an orthonormal basis in $\mathcal{H}$. We call $(b_m)_{m=1}^\infty$ a Blaschke frame for $B$ with isometry $V$ on $\mathcal{H}$. We show how instrumental the use of Hilbert space models are in frame theory by completely solving the question of redundancy for a Blaschke frame, that is, what vectors can be removed from the frame $(b_{m})_{m=1}^{\infty}$ such that $(b_{m})_{m\neq k}$ is still a frame? Using the Wold decomposition, we prove that a Blaschke frame can have no redundant vectors (a Riesz basis), have some redundant vectors, or every vector is redundant (a fully insured frame). These unique cases depend on the choice of finite Blaschke product and which isometry one chooses in the construction of a Blaschke frame.

Boundary behavior of functions in the Schur-Agler class of the polydisc

We describe a generalization of the notion of a Hilbert space model of a function $\varphi$ in the Schur-Agler class of the polydisc. This generalization is well adapted to the investigation of boundary behavior of $\varphi$ at a mild singularity $\tau$ on the $d$-torus. We prove the existence of a generalized model with an enhanced continuity property at such a singularity $\tau$. We use this result to prove the directional differentiability of a function $\varphi$ in the Schur-Agler class at a singular point on the $d$-torus for which the Carath\'eodory condition holds and to calculate the corresponding directional derivative. The results of this paper extend to the polydisc $\mathbb{D}^d$ results of Agler, McCarthy, Tully-Doyle and Young which generalized to the bidisc the classical Julia-Wolff-Carath\'{e}odory theorem about analytic self-maps of $\mathbb{D}$.

Direct Iterative Reconstruction of Multiple Basis Material Images in Photon-counting Spectral CT

In this work, we perform direct material reconstruction from spectral CT data using a model based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) approach. Material concentrations are measured in volume fractions, whose total is constrained by a maximum of unity. A phantom containing a combination of 4 basis materials (water, iodine, gadolinium, calcium) was scanned using a photon-counting detector. Iodine and gadolinium were chosen because of their common use as contrast agents in CT imaging. Scan data was binned into 5 energy (keV) levels. Each energy bin in a calibration scan was reconstructed, allowing the linear attenuation coefficient of each material for every energy to be estimated by a least-squares fit to ground truth in the image domain. The resulting $5\times 4$ matrix, for $5$ energies and $4$ materials, is incorporated into the forward model in direct reconstruction of the $4$ basis material images with spatial and/or inter-material regularization. In reconstruction from a subsequent low-concentration scan, volume fractions within regions of interest (ROIs) are found to be close to the ground truth. This work is meant to lay the foundation for further work with phantoms including spatially coincident mixtures of contrast materials and/or contrast agents in widely varying concentrations, molecular imaging from animal scans, and eventually clinical applications.
