Fortuitous ABJM Operators as Black Holes

Given a superconformal gauge theory at a fixed loop order, BPS states can be studied in two ways --- by enumerating cohomology classes of a nilpotent supercharge or by diagonalizing the anomalous dimension matrix. The second one allows for a deeper look at how holographic theories distinguish between operators based on whether they are dual to horizonless geometries or black holes. To this end, we carry out the diagonalization in $\mathrm{U}(N)_k \times \mathrm{U}(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory with $N$ as a formal parameter. This makes it possible to define trajectories of operators and focus on the fortuitous ones which are characterized by being BPS at only finitely many values of $N$. In contrast to $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills, where it has been numerically prohibitive to study more than one of these, ABJM gives us access to 16 such trajectories along with their descendants. We show that they take an especially simple form at large $N$ where they agree with the predictions of integrability. We also show that many of them, as with black holes, can only be dressed by certain types of gravitons and comment on how this exercise in cohomology also has implications for properties of the full operators. Finally, we show that the gap to the first non-BPS state in ABJM theory qualitatively differs from that of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills in the expected way.

Two roads to fortuity in ABJM theory

A recently proposed addition to the holographic dictionary connects extremal black holes to fortuitous operators -- those which are only supersymmetric for sufficiently small values of the central charge. The most efficient techniques for finding them come from studying the cohomology of a nilpotent supercharge. We explore two aspects of this problem in weakly-coupled ABJM theory, where the gauge group is $\mathrm{U}(N) \times \mathrm{U}(N)$ and the Chern-Simons level is taken to be large. Adapting an algorithm which has been used to great effect in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills, we enumerate 244 low-lying fortuitous operators and sort them into multiplets of the centralizer algebra. This leads to the construction of two leading fortuitous representatives for $N = 3$ which are subleading for $N = 2$. In the second part of this work, we identify a truncation of ABJM theory where the action of the one-loop supercharge matches the one in the BMN subsector of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills. This allows a known infinite tower of representatives to be lifted from one theory to the other.

Long-range minimal models

We study a class of nonlocal conformal field theories in two dimensions which are obtained as deformations of the Virasoro minimal models. The construction proceeds by coupling a relevant primary operator $\phi_{r,s}$ of the $m$-th minimal model to a generalized free field, in such a way that the interaction term has scaling dimension $2-\delta$. Flowing to the infrared, we reach a new class of CFTs that we call long-range minimal models. In the case $r=s=2$, the resulting line of fixed points, parametrized by $\delta$, can be studied using two perturbative expansions with different regimes of validity, one near the mean-field theory end, and one close to the long-range to short-range crossover. This is due to a straightforward generalization of an infrared duality which was proposed for the long-range Ising model ($m = 3$) in 2017. We find that the large-$m$ limit is problematic in both perturbative regimes, hence nonperturbative methods will be required in the intermediate range for all values of $m$. For the models based on $\phi_{1,2}$, the situation is rather different. In this case, only one perturbative expansion is known but it is well behaved at large $m$. We confirm this with a computation of infinitely many anomalous dimensions at two loops. Their large-$m$ limits are obtained from both numerical extrapolations and a method we develop which carries out conformal perturbation theory using Mellin amplitudes. For minimal models, these can be accessed from the Coulomb gas representations of the correlators. This method reveals analytic expressions for some integrals in conformal perturbation theory which were previously only known numerically.

Coupled minimal models revisited II: Constraints from permutation symmetry

Coupling $N$ large $m$ minimal models and flowing to IR fixed points is a systematic way to build new classes of compact unitary 2d CFTs which are likely to be irrational, and potentially have a positive Virasoro twist gap above the vaccuum. In this paper, we build on the construction of [1], establishing that, for spins less than 10, additional currents transforming in non-trivial irreducible representations of the permutation symmetry $S_N$ are not conserved at the IR fixed points. Along the way, we develop a finer understanding of the spectrum of these theories, of the special properties of the $N=4$ case and of non-invertible symmetries that constrain them. We also discuss variations of the original setup of [1] some of which can exist for smaller values of the UV central charge.

Mellin amplitudes for $AdS_3 \times S^3$

There are holographic superconformal theories in all dimensions between two and six which allow arbitrary tree-level four-point functions to be fixed by basic consistency conditions. Although Mellin space is usually the most efficient setting for imposing these contraints, four-point functions in two dimensions have thus far been an exception due to their more intricate dependence on the conformal cross-ratios. In this paper, we introduce a simple fix which exploits the relation between a parity-odd conformal block in two dimensions and a parity-even conformal block in four dimensions. We then apply the resulting toolkit to a study of the paradigmatic holographic theory in two dimensions which is the D1-D5 CFT. For correlators involving Kaluza-Klein modes of the tensor multiplet, this analysis reproduces results which were previously obtained using hidden conformal symmetry. With four Kaluza-Klein modes of the graviton multiplet, it yields new results including a compact formula for the correlators of all pairwise identical operators,

Towards Bootstrapping F-theory

We consider type IIB string theory with $N$ D3 branes and various configurations of sevenbranes, such that the string coupling $g_s$ is fixed to a constant finite value. These are the simplest realizations of F-theory, and are holographically dual to rank $N$ Argyres-Douglas conformal field theories (CFTs) with $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ flavor groups, and Minahan-Nemeschansky CFTs with $E_6, E_7$ and $E_8$ flavor groups. We use the Seiberg-Witten curves of these theories to compute the mass deformed sphere free energy $F(m)$ at large $N$ in terms of novel matrix models with non-polynomial potentials. We show how $F(m)$ can be used along with the analytic bootstrap to fix the large $N$ expansion of flavor multiplet correlators in these CFTs, which are dual to scattering of gluons on $AdS_5\times S^3$, and in the flat space limit determine the effective theory of sevenbranes in F-theory. As a first step in this program, we use the matrix models to compute the $\log N$ term in $F(m)$ and thereby fix the logarithmic threshold in the $AdS_5\times S^3$ holographic correlator, which matches the flat space prediction.

Analytic and numerical bootstrap for the long-range Ising model

We combine perturbation theory with analytic and numerical bootstrap techniques to study the critical point of the long-range Ising (LRI) model in two and three dimensions. This model interpolates between short-range Ising (SRI) and mean-field behaviour. We use the Lorentzian inversion formula to compute infinitely many three-loop corrections in the two-dimensional LRI near the mean-field end. We further exploit the exact OPE relations that follow from bulk locality of the LRI to compute infinitely many two-loop corrections near the mean-field end, as well as some one-loop corrections near SRI. By including such exact OPE relations in the crossing equations for LRI we set up a very constrained bootstrap problem, which we solve numerically using SDPB. We find a family of sharp kinks for two- and three-dimensional theories which compare favourably to perturbative predictions, as well as some Monte Carlo simulations for the two-dimensional LRI.

Gluon scattering in AdS at finite string coupling from localization

We consider gluons scattering in Type IIB string theory on AdS$_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ in the presence of D7 branes, which is dual to the flavor multiplet correlator in a certain 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $USp(2N)$ gauge theory with $SO(8)$ flavor symmetry and complexified coupling $\tau$. We compute this holographic correlator in the large $N$ and finite $\tau$ expansion using constraints from derivatives of the mass deformed sphere free energy, which we compute to all orders in $1/N$ and finite $\tau$ using supersymmetric localization. In particular, we fix the $F^4$ higher derivative correction to gluon scattering on AdS at finite string coupling $\tau_s=\tau$ in terms of Jacobi theta functions, which feature the expected relations between the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality and the $SO(8)$ triality of the CFT, and match it to the known flat space term. We also use the flat space limit to compute $D^2F^4$ corrections of the correlator at finite $\tau$ in terms of a non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. At weak string coupling, we find that the AdS correlator takes a form which is remarkably similar to that of the flat space Veneziano amplitude.

Coupled minimal models revisited

We study coupled unitary Virasoro minimal models in the large rank ($m \rightarrow \infty$) limit. In large $m$ perturbation theory, we find two non-trivial IR fixed points which exhibit irrational coefficients in several anomalous dimensions and the central charge. For $N>4$ copies, we show that the IR theory breaks all possible currents that would otherwise enhance the Virasoro algebra, up to spin 10. This provides strong evidence that the IR fixed points are examples of compact, unitary, irrational CFTs with the minimal amount of chiral symmetry. We also analyze anomalous dimension matrices for a family of degenerate operators with increasing spin. These display further evidence of irrationality and begin to reveal the form of the leading quantum Regge trajectory.

Holographic S-fold theories at one loop

A common feature of tree-level holography is that a correlator in one theory can serve as a generating function for correlators in another theory with less continuous symmetry. This is the case for a family of 4d CFTs with eight supercharges which have protected operators dual to gluons in the bulk. The most recent additions to this family were defined using S-folds which combine a spatial identification with an action of the S-duality group in type IIB string theory. Differences between these CFTs which have a dynamical origin first become manifest at one loop. To explore this phenomenon at the level of anomalous dimensions, we use the AdS unitarity method to bootstrap a one-loop double discontinuity. Compared to previous studies, the subsequent analysis is performed without any assumption about which special functions are allowed. Instead, the Casimir singular and Casimir regular terms are extracted iteratively in order to move from one Regge trajectory to the next. Our results show that anomalous dimensions in the presence of an S-fold are no longer rational functions of the spin.

Bootstrapping boundary-localized interactions II: Minimal models at the boundary

We provide evidence for the existence of non-trivial unitary conformal boundary conditions for a three-dimensional free scalar field, which can be obtained via a coupling to the m'th unitary diagonal minimal model. For large m we can demonstrate the existence of the fixed point perturbatively, and for smaller values we use the numerical conformal bootstrap to obtain a sharp kink that smoothly matches onto the perturbative predictions. The wider numerical analysis also yields universal bounds for the spectrum of any other boundary condition for the free scalar field. A second kink in these bounds hints at a second class of non-standard boundary conditions, as yet unidentified.

Gluon Scattering in AdS from CFT

We present a systematic study of holographic correlators in a vast array of SCFTs with non-maximal superconformal symmetry. These theories include 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs from D3-branes near F-theory singularities, 5d Seiberg exceptional theories and 6d E-string theory, as well as 3d and 4d phenomenological models with probe flavor branes. We consider current multiplets and their generalizations with higher weights, dual to massless and massive super gluons in the bulk. At leading order in the inverse central charge expansion, connected four-point functions of these operators correspond to tree-level gluon scattering amplitudes in AdS. We show that all such tree-level four-point amplitudes in all these theories are fully fixed by symmetries and consistency conditions and explicitly construct them. Our results encode a wealth of SCFT data and exhibit various interesting emergent structures. These include Parisi-Sourlas-like dimensional reductions, hidden conformal symmetry and an AdS version of the color-kinematic duality.

More on holographic correlators: Twisted and dimensionally reduced structures

Recently four-point holographic correlators with arbitrary external BPS operators were constructively derived in [1,2] at tree-level for maximally superconformal theories. In this paper, we capitalize on these theoretical data, and perform a detailed study of their analytic properties. We point out that these maximally supersymmetric holographic correlators exhibit a hidden dimensional reduction structure \`a la Parisi and Sourlas. This emergent structure allows the correlators to be compactly expressed in terms of only scalar exchange diagrams in a dimensionally reduced spacetime, where formally both the AdS and the sphere factors have four dimensions less. We also demonstrate the superconformal properties of holographic correlators under the chiral algebra and topological twistings. For $AdS_5\times S^5$ and $AdS_7\times S^4$, we obtain closed form expressions for the meromorphic twisted correlators from the maximally R-symmetry violating limit of the holographic correlators. The results are compared with independent field theory computations in 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and the 6d $(2,0)$ theory, finding perfect agreement. For $AdS_4\times S^7$, we focus on an infinite family of near-extremal four-point correlators, and extract various protected OPE coefficients from supergravity. These OPE coefficients provide new holographic predictions to be matched by future supersymmetric localization calculations. In deriving these results, we also develop many technical tools which should have broader applicability beyond studying holographic correlators.

Bootstrapping boundary-localized interactions

We study conformal boundary conditions for the theory of a single real scalar to investigate whether the known Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are the only possibilities. For this free bulk theory there are strong restrictions on the possible boundary dynamics. In particular, we find that the bulk-to-boundary operator expansion of the bulk field involves at most a `shadow pair' of boundary fields, irrespective of the conformal boundary condition. We numerically analyze the four-point crossing equations for this shadow pair in the case of a three-dimensional boundary (so a four-dimensional scalar field) and find that large ranges of parameter space are excluded. However a `kink' in the numerical bounds obeys all our consistency checks and might be an indication of a new conformal boundary condition.

Bootstrapping the long-range Ising model in three dimensions

The 3D Ising model and the generalized free scalar of dimension at least 0.75 belong to a continuous line of nonlocal fixed points, each referred to as a long-range Ising model. They can be distinguished by the dimension of the lightest spin-2 operator, which interpolates between 3 and 3.5 if we focus on the non-trivial part of the fixed line. A property common to all such theories is the presence of three relevant conformal primaries, two of which form a shadow pair. This pair is analogous to a superconformal multiplet in that it enforces relations between certain conformal blocks. By demanding that crossing symmetry and unitarity hold for a set of correlators involving the relevant operators, we compute numerical bounds on their scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients. Specifically, we raise the minimal spin-2 operator dimension to find successively smaller regions which eventually form a kink. Whenever a kink appears, its co-ordinates show good agreement with the epsilon expansion predictions for the critical exponents in the corresponding statistical model. As a byproduct, our results reveal an infinite tower of protected operators with odd spin.

The unitary subsector of generalized minimal models

We revisit the line of non-unitary theories that interpolate between the Virasoro minimal models. Numerical bootstrap applications have brought about interest in the four-point function involving the scalar primary of lowest dimension. Using recent progress in harmonic analysis on the conformal group, we prove the conjecture that global conformal blocks in this correlator appear with positive coefficients. We also compute many such coefficients in the simplest mixed correlator system. Finally, we comment on the status of using global conformal blocks to isolate the truly unitary points on this line.

Conformal manifolds: ODEs from OPEs

The existence of an exactly marginal deformation in a conformal field theory is very special, but it is not well understood how this is reflected in the allowed dimensions and OPE coefficients of local operators. To shed light on this question, we compute perturbative corrections to several observables in an abstract CFT, starting with the beta function. This yields a sum rule that the theory must obey in order to be part of a conformal manifold. The set of constraints relating CFT data at different values of the coupling can in principle be written as a dynamical system that allows one to flow arbitrarily far. We begin the analysis of it by finding a simple form for the differential equations when the spacetime and theory space are both one-dimensional. A useful feature we can immediately observe is that our system makes it very difficult for level crossing to occur.

A scaling theory for the long-range to short-range crossover and an infrared duality

We study the second-order phase transition in the $d$-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions decreasing as a power of the distance $1/r^{d+s}$. For $s$ below some known value $s_*$, the transition is described by a conformal field theory without a local stress tensor operator, with critical exponents varying continuously as functions of $s$. At $s=s_*$, the phase transition crosses over to the short-range universality class. While the location $s_*$ of this crossover has been known for 40 years, its physics has not been fully understood, the main difficulty being that the standard description of the long-range critical point is strongly coupled at the crossover. In this paper we propose another field-theoretic description which, on the contrary, is weakly coupled near the crossover. We use this description to clarify the nature of the crossover and make predictions about the critical exponents. That the same long-range critical point can be reached from two different UV descriptions provides a new example of infrared duality.
