$L^p$ isomorphisms for the fractional Laplacian on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and their application

A classical theory of Amrouche, Girault and Giroire (1994) resolves the Laplace equation on $\mathbb{R}^n$ through an isomorphism between weighted Sobolev spaces. Inspired by their framework, we develop the corresponding $L^p$ theory for the fractional Laplacian: we introduce weighted fractional Sobolev spaces $\Lambda^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, gauged at top order by $\|(-\triangle)^{\frac{s}{2}}u\|_{L^p}$, and prove that $(-\triangle)^{\frac{s}{2}}:\Lambda^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)/\mathcal P_{[s-n/p]}\to L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is an isomorphism for all $s\in(0,2)$ and $p\in(1,\infty)$; thus $(-\triangle)^{\frac{s}{2}}u=f$ is solvable for every $f\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$, uniquely modulo an explicit finite-dimensional space of polynomials. More generally, extending the scale by duality to negative orders, the fractional Laplacians of the appropriate orders map its spaces isomorphically onto one another and compose exactly. A key ingredient is a family of weighted Hardy and Poincar\'e inequalities adapted to $\|(-\triangle)^{\frac{s}{2}}u\|_{L^p}$, established here for $1\le s<2$ by a reduction to the gradient. Since these inequalities hold a priori only on a dense class, while the density of $C_{\mathrm{c}}^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in $\Lambda^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is itself nontrivial, we first prove the isomorphism on the closure of the Schwartz class, which coincides with $\Lambda^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ since the difference of two solutions is an entire $s$-harmonic function, hence a polynomial; the density follows as a by-product. As an application, we obtain existence and uniqueness, with explicit kernels and compatibility conditions, for the fractional Stokes system in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Asymptotic Expansions of the Fundamental Solution for a Mixed Local-Nonlocal Operator

In this paper, we study the fundamental solution of the mixed local-nonlocal operator $ -\Delta+(-\Delta)^s,$ $ 0<s<1. $ We derive precise asymptotic expansions of the fundamental solution and its gradient, up to the first nontrivial correction term, both near the origin and at infinity. The expansions describe the transition between the local and nonlocal diffusion scales and include the critical regimes in which logarithmic terms occur. As applications of these asymptotics, we establish a distributional B\^ocher-type theorem for nonnegative supersolutions with an isolated singularity. We further obtain quantitative positive and antisymmetric maximum principles on punctured balls.

Classification of global solutions to the singular equation $-\Delta u=f(X)\cdot u^{-\gamma}$ in a Lipschitz epigraphical cone

We construct and classify all global solutions to the singular equation $$-\Delta u=f(X)\cdot u^{-\gamma}$$ supported in a general Lipschitz epigraphical cone, where $f(X)$ is a locally Dini continuous function with $0<\lambda\leq f(X)\leq\Lambda$. The existence and non-existence of a global solution is solely determined by the exponent $\gamma$ of the equation and the ``frequency" of the cone. Moreover, in order to classify all global solutions, we introduce several new methods. First, we use the local data to estimate the global growth rate, which in turn establishes the boundedness of the ``asymptotic slope" of the global solution. Second, by establishing a nonlinear variant of Kemper's boundary Harnack principle, we classify all global solutions through an ``oscillation reduction" argument on the ``asymptotic slope".

Liouville Theorems for the Lane-Emden Equation Involving a Mixed Local-Nonlocal Operator

In this paper, we investigate the existence of positive supersolutions for the following mixed local-nonlocal Lane-Emden type equation: $$ -\Delta u+(-\Delta)^s u=u^q\quad\text{in }\mathbb R^n, $$ where $n\geq 3$, $s\in(0,1)$, and $q>1$. More precisely, we prove that the equation admits positive distributional supersolutions if and only if $q>\frac{n}{n-2s}$. In the process, we establish several novel properties of mixed local-nonlocal operators, including sharp asymptotic estimates for the fundamental solution, a maximum principle in the distributional sense, and an equivalent integral inequality for supersolutions.

A convergence result for the master operator

In this paper, we establish a convergence result for the fully fractional heat operator $\ma{s}$, also known as the master operator, stated as follows: \[\mbox{If\ }u_i\to u\ \mbox{in}\ C^{2,1}_{x,t,loc}(\R^n\times\R),\ \mbox{then}\ \ma{s} u_i\to \ma{s}u-b\ \mbox{a.e. in}\ \R^n\times\R,\] for some nonnegative constant $b$. This result addresses a fundamental question in the blow-up and rescaling analysis, which are essential for establishing a priori estimates for solutions of master equations. Additionally, we present examples demonstrating that in certain cases, the constant $b$ can indeed be positive. This highlights a key distinction between nonlocal and local operators: for a local heat operator, such as $\partial_t - \lap$, it is well-known that $b \equiv 0$.

Methods in studying qualitative properties of fractional equations

In this paper, we systematically review a series of effective methods for studying the qualitative properties of solutions to fractional equations. Beginning with the pioneering extension method and the method of moving planes in integral forms, we introduce a variety of direct methods, including the direct method of moving planes, the method of moving spheres, blow-up and rescaling techniques, the sliding method, regularity lifting, and approaches for interior and boundary regularity estimates. To elucidate the core ideas behind these methods, we employ simple examples that demonstrate how they can be applied to investigate qualitative properties of solutions. We also provide a comparative discussion of their respective strengths and limitations. It is our hope that this paper will serve as a useful handbook for researchers engaged in the study of fractional equations.

Boundary regularity and a priori estimates for fractional equations on unbounded domains

In this paper, we study the boundary H\"older regularity for solutions to the fractional Dirichlet problem in unbounded domains with boundary \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} (-\Delta)^s u(x) = g(x),&\text{in } \Omega, u(x)=0, &\text{in } \Omega^c. \end{cases} \end{equation*} Existing results rely on the global $L^{\infty}$ norm of solutions to control their boundary $C^s$ norm, which is insufficient for blow-up and rescaling analysis to obtain a priori estimates in unbounded domains. To overcome this limitation, we first derive a local version of boundary H\"older regularity for nonnegative solutions in which we replace the global $L^{\infty}$ norm by only a local $L^{\infty}$ norm. Then as an important application, we establish a priori estimates for nonnegative solutions to a family of nonlinear equations on unbounded domains with boundaries.

Boundary regularity theory of the singular Lane-Emden-Fowler equation in a Lipschitz domain

We study the singular Lane-Emden-Fowler equation \begin{equation} -\Delta u=f(X)\cdot u^{-\gamma} \end{equation} in a bounded Lipschitz domain $\Omega$, with the Dirichlet boundary condition and a positive, bounded function $f(X)$. A distinguishing feature is that the vanishing boundary condition introduces a singularity in the equation. We focus on the well-posedness of the equation and the growth rate of solutions near the boundary. The key is to classify the limiting cone of a boundary point into three categories based on its "frequency", and obtain distinct growth rate estimates for each case. Additionally, we discuss the boundary Harnack principle for the singular Lane-Emden-Fowler equation, which is essential in deriving the boundary growth rate estimate. To our knowledge, the boundary Harnack principle we derive is the first Kemper-type estimate for singular semi-linear equations. It notably differs from the classical one for linear equations, in particular, the boundedness of the ratio \(u/v\) does not imply its continuity. To address the lack of a suitable upper barrier, we introduce new techniques, including constructing upper barriers iteratively. We also construct a subharmonic auxiliary function $V(X)$ related to the solution $u$ in the limiting cone. The growth rate of $u(X)$ is then obtained inductively from the growth rate of the auxiliary function $V(X)$. Our results and methods offer novel insights into the behavior of singular elliptic equations in non-smooth domains.

Regularity of solutions for fully fractional parabolic equations

In this paper, we study the fully fractional heat equation involving the master operator: $$ (\partial_t -\Delta)^{s} u(x,t) = f(x,t)\ \ \mbox{in}\ \mathbb{R}^n\times\mathbb{R} , $$ where $s\in(0,1)$ and $f(x,t) \geq 0$. First we derive H\"{o}lder and Schauder estimates for nonnegative solutions of this equation. Due to the {\em nonlocality} of the master operator, existing results (cf. \cite{ST}) rely on global bounds of the solutions $u$ to control their higher local norms. However, such results are inadequate for blow-up and rescaling analysis aimed at obtaining a priori estimates for solutions to {\em nonlocal } equations on unbounded domains, as the global norms of the rescaled functions may diverge. This limitation raises to a natural and challenging question: {\em Can local bounds of solutions replace global bounds to control their higher local norms?} Here, we provide an affirmative answer to this question for nonnegative solutions. To achieve this, we introduced several new ideas and novel techniques. One of the key innovations is to use a {\em directional perturbation average} to derive an important estimate for the fully fractional heat kernel, as stated in Lemma \ref{key0}. We believe this estimate, along with other new techniques introduced here, will serve as powerful tools in regularity estimates for a wide range of nonlocal equations. Building on this breakthrough, we employ the blow-up and rescaling arguments to establish a priori estimates for solutions to a broader class of nonlocal equations in unbounded domains, such as $$(\partial_t -\Delta)^{s} u(x,t) = b(x,t) |\nabla_x u (x,t)|^q + f(x, u(x,t))\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^n\times\mathbb{R}.$$ Under appropriate conditions, we prove that all nonnegative solutions, along with their spatial gradients, are uniformly bounded.

Refined regularity for nonlocal elliptic equations and applications

In this paper, we establish refined regularity estimates for nonnegative solutions to the fractional Poisson equation $$ (-\Delta)^s u(x) =f(x),\,\, x\in B_1(0). $$ Specifically, we have derived H\"{o}lder, Schauder, and Ln-Lipschitz regularity estimates for any nonnegative solution $u,$ provided that only the local $L^\infty$ norm of $u$ is bounded. These estimates stand in sharp contrast to the existing results where the global $L^\infty$ norm of $u$ is required. Our findings indicate that the local values of the solution $u$ and $f$ are sufficient to control the local values of higher order derivatives of $u$. Notably, this makes it possible to establish a priori estimates in unbounded domains by using blowing up and re-scaling argument. As applications, we derive singularity and decay estimates for solutions to some super-linear nonlocal problems in unbounded domains, and in particular, we obtain a priori estimates for a family of fractional Lane-Emden type equations in $\mathbb{R}^n.$ This is achieved by adopting a different method using auxiliary functions, which is applicable to both local and nonlocal problems.

The direct moving sphere for fractional Laplace equation

This paper works on the direct method of moving spheres and establishes a Liouville-type theorem for the fractional elliptic equation \[ (-\Delta)^{\alpha/2} u =f(u) ~~~~~~ \text{in } \mathbb{R}^{n} \] with general non-linearity. One of the key improvement over the previous work is that we do not require the usual Lipschitz condition. In fact, we only assume the structural condition that $f(t) t^{- \frac{n+\alpha}{n-\alpha}}$ is monotonically decreasing. This differs from the usual approach such as Chen-Li-Li (Adv. Math. 2017), which needed the Lipschitz condition on $f$, or Chen-Li-Zhang (J. Funct. Anal. 2017), which relied on both the structural condition and the monotonicity of $f$. We also use the direct moving spheres method to give an alternative proof for the Liouville-type theorem of the fractional Lane-Emden equation in a half space. Similarly, our proof does not depend on the integral representation of solutions compared to existing ones. The methods developed here should also apply to problems involving more general non-local operators, especially if no equivalent integral equations exist.

A localized criterion for the regularity of solutions to Navier-Stokes equations

The Serrin-Prodi-Ladyzhenskaya type $L^{p,q}$ criteria for the regularity of solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are fundamental in the study of the millennium problem posted by the Clay Mathematical Institute about the incompressible N-S equations. In this article, we establish some localized $L^{p,q}$ criteria for the regularity of solutions to the equations. In fact, we obtain some a priori estimates of solutions to the equations depend only on some local $L^{p,q}$ type norms. These local $L^{p,q}$ type norms, are small for reasonable initial value and shall remain to be small for global regular solutions. Thus, deriving the smallness or even the boundedness of the local $L^{p,q}$ type norms is necessary and sufficient to affirmatively answer the millennium problem. Our work provides an interesting and plausible approach to study the millennium problem.

Uniqueness and some related estimates for Dirichlet problem with fractional Laplacian

For the fractional Laplace equation, a surprising observation is the non-uniqueness for the basic Dirichlet type problems. In this paper, a somewhat sharp uniqueness condition for the fractional Laplace equation is established. We derive the $L^p$-estimate for fractional Laplacian operators to better understand this phenomena. Several weighted fractional Sobolev spaces appear naturally. We then establish the embedding relations between these spaces. These existence-uniqueness conditions and the spaces we introduce here are intrinsically related to the fractional Laplacian. These are basic properties to the fractional Laplace equations and can be useful in the study of related problems.

Analysis on the steady Euler flows with stagnation points in an infinitely long nozzle

A recent prominent result asserts that steady incompressible Euler flows strictly away from stagnation in a two-dimensional infinitely long strip must be shear flows. On the other hand, flows with stagnation points, very challenging in analysis, are interesting and important phenomenon in fluids. In this paper, we not only prove the uniqueness and existence of steady flows with stagnation points, but also obtain the regularity of the boundary of stagnation set, which is a class of obstacle type free boundary. First, we prove a global uniqueness theorem for steady Euler system with Poiseuille flows as upstream far field state in an infinitely long strip. Due to the appearance of stagnation points, the nonlinearity of the semilinear equation for the stream function becomes non-Lipschitz. This creates a challenging analysis problem since many classical analysis methods do not apply directly. Second, the existence of steady incompressible Euler flows, tending to Poiseuille flows in the upstream, are established in an infinitely long nozzle via variational approach. A very interesting phenomenon is the regularity of the boundary of non-stagnant region, which can be regarded as an obstacle type free boundary and is proved to be globally $C^1$. Finally, the existence of stagnation region is proved as long as the nozzle is wider than the width of the nozzle at upstream where the flows tend to Poiseuille flows.

A note on the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality in a bounded domain

The classical Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality was established in $\mathbb{R}^n$. An extension to a bounded domain was given by Gagliardo in 1959. In this note, we present a simple proof of this result and prove a new Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality in a bounded Lipschitz domain.

Maximum principles for Laplacian and fractional Laplacian with critical integrability

In this paper, we study maximum principles for Laplacian and fractional Laplacian with critical integrability. We first consider the critical cases for Laplacian with zero order term and first order term. It is well known that for the Laplacian with zero order term $-\Delta +c(x)$ in $B_1$, $c(x)\in L^p(B_1)$($B_1\subset \mathbf{R}^n$), the critical case for the maximum principle is $p=\frac{n}{2}$. We show that the critical condition $c(x)\in {L^{\frac{n}{2}}(B_1)}$ is not enough to guarantee the strong maximum principle. For the Laplacian with first order term $-\Delta +\vec{b}(x)$($\vec{b}(x)\in L^p(B_1)$), the critical case is $p=n$. In this case, we establish the maximum principle and strong maximum principle for Laplacian with first order term. We also extend some of the maximum principles above to the fractional Laplacian. We replace the classical lower semi-continuous condition on solutions for the fractional Laplacian with some integrability condition. Then we establish a series of maximum principles for fractional Laplacian under some integrability condition on the coefficients. These conditions are weaker than the previous regularity conditions. The weakened conditions on the coefficients and the non-locality of the fractional Laplacian bring in some new difficulties. Some new techniques are developed.

A Hopf lemma and regularity for fractional $p-$Laplacians

In this paper, we study qualitative properties of the fractional $p$-Laplacian. Specifically, we establish a Hopf type lemma for positive weak super-solutions of the fractional $p-$Laplacian equation with Dirichlet condition. Moreover, an optimal condition is obtained to ensure $(-\triangle)_p^s u\in C^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for smooth functions $u$.

Singular solutions of linear problems with fractional Laplacian

In this paper, we study singular solutions of linear problems with fractional Laplacian. First, we establish B\^ocher type theorems on a punctured ball via distributional approach. Then, we develop a few interesting maximum principles on a punctured ball. Our distributional approach only requires the basic local L-1 integrability. We also introduce several simple and useful lemmas, which enable us to unify the treatments for both Laplacian and fractional Laplacian. These theorems, lemmas and the methods introduced here can be adapted and applied in other situations.
