Electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and viscosity of Fe-H alloys at Earth's core conditions

The transport properties (electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and viscosity) of iron-hydrogen alloys are of great significance in the stability and evolution of planetary magnetic fields. Here, we investigate the thermal transport properties of iron doped with varying hydrogen content as functions of pressure (P) and temperature (T) for the top and bottom of Earth's outer core and beyond, corresponding to pressures of about 130 to 300 GPa and temperatures of 4000 to 7000 K. Using first-principles density functional theory molecular dynamic simulations (FPMD), we verify that crystalline FeH$_x$ is superionic with H diffusing freely. We find a low frequency viscosity of 10-11 mPa$\cdot$s for liquid Fe-H alloys at Earth's outer core conditions. We find saturation of electrical resistivity with increasing temperatures in liquid iron at outer core conditions. The effect of H on electrical and thermal transport we find is small, so that the exact H content of the core is not needed. The primary effect of H is on the equation of state, decreasing the density at constant P and T. We find the Lorenz number is smaller than the ideal value, and obtain for X(H)= 0.20, or 0.45 wt% H , thermal conductivity $κ$ of $\sim$105 and $\sim$190 $Wm^{-1}K^{-1}$, respectively, at conditions near the core-mantle and inner-outer core boundary.

Optimizing and reducing stochastic resonance by noise color in globally coupled bistable systems

We investigate the collective signal response of two typical nonlinear dynamical models, the mean-field coupled overdamped bistable oscillators and the underdamped Duffing oscillators, with respect to both the additive Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise and the weak periodical stimulus. Based on the linear response theory, we theoretically derive the dependences of the ensemble signal response on the noise intensity and driving frequency of both systems. Furthermore, we theoretically demonstrate that the noise color monotonically weakens the strength of stochastic resonance in the overdamped situation, but nonmonotonically strengthens it in the underdamped counterpart. Such a result goes against the conventional wisdom that the color of the additive noise impairs the magnitude of stochastic resonance. Finally, we perform the numerical integration to verify our theoretical results and discuss potential connections with the functional significance of 1/f noise.

PsyPlay: Personality-Infused Role-Playing Conversational Agents

The current research on Role-Playing Conversational Agents (RPCAs) with Large Language Models (LLMs) primarily focuses on imitating specific speaking styles and utilizing character backgrounds, neglecting the depiction of deeper personality traits.~In this study, we introduce personality-infused role-playing for LLM agents, which encourages agents to accurately portray their designated personality traits during dialogues. We then propose PsyPlay, a dialogue generation framework that facilitates the expression of rich personalities among multiple LLM agents. Specifically, PsyPlay enables agents to assume roles with distinct personality traits and engage in discussions centered around specific topics, consistently exhibiting their designated personality traits throughout the interactions. Validation on generated dialogue data demonstrates that PsyPlay can accurately portray the intended personality traits, achieving an overall success rate of 80.31% on GPT-3.5. Notably, we observe that LLMs aligned with positive values are more successful in portraying positive personality roles compared to negative ones. Moreover, we construct a dialogue corpus for personality-infused role-playing, called PsyPlay-Bench. The corpus, which consists of 4745 instances of correctly portrayed dialogues using PsyPlay, aims to further facilitate research in personalized role-playing and dialogue personality detection.

Ellipticities of Galaxy Cluster Halos from Halo-Shear-Shear Correlations

We report the first detection of the halo ellipticities of galaxy clusters by applying the halo-shear-shear correlations (HSSC), without the necessity of major axis determination. We use the Fourier\_Quad shear catalog based on the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey and the group catalog from the DESI Legacy Surveys for the measurement of group/cluster lensing and HSSC. Our analysis includes the off-centering effects. We obtain the average projected ellipticity of dark matter halos with mass $13.5 < {\rm log} (M_G h/ M_\odot) < 14.5$ within 1.3 virial radius to be $0.48^{+0.12}_{-0.19}$. We divide the sample into two groups based on mass and redshift, and we find that halos with higher mass tend to exhibit increased ellipticity. We also reveal that high-richness halos have larger ellipticities, confirming the physical picture from numerical simulation that high-richiness halos have a dynamical youth and more active mass accretion phase.

Characterization of silicon photomultipliers for their application in muon scattering tomography

Muon scattering tomography is a non-destructive technique used to image different materials by utilizing natural cosmic ray muons. Typically it requires position-sensitive detectors with a sub-millimeter resolution to effectively distinguish high-$Z$ materials in a compact system. The plastic scintillating fiber detector is a feasible candidate and is currently being designed with one-dimensional silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout. In this work, we constructed experimental setups to characterize three different SiPMs from the NDL, SensL, and HPK manufacturers for optimal performance of the scintillating fiber detector. The breakdown voltage, temperature compensation factor, dark noise, and photodetection efficiency of each SiPM are evaluated and summarized. Among the SiPMs tested, the HPK SiPM demonstrated the lowest dark count rate and crosstalk probability while exhibiting the best photodetection efficiency response at the emission wavelengths of the scintillating fibers. This makes the HPK SiPM particularly well-suited to meet the requirements of the detector and serves as a reference for further customization of the one-dimensional SiPM array.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Job Scheduling and Resource Management in Cloud Computing: An Algorithm-Level Review

Cloud computing has revolutionized the provisioning of computing resources, offering scalable, flexible, and on-demand services to meet the diverse requirements of modern applications. At the heart of efficient cloud operations are job scheduling and resource management, which are critical for optimizing system performance and ensuring timely and cost-effective service delivery. However, the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of cloud environments presents significant challenges for these tasks, as workloads and resource availability can fluctuate unpredictably. Traditional approaches, including heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms, often struggle to adapt to these real-time changes due to their reliance on static models or predefined rules. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has emerged as a promising solution to these challenges by enabling systems to learn and adapt policies based on continuous observations of the environment, facilitating intelligent and responsive decision-making. This survey provides a comprehensive review of DRL-based algorithms for job scheduling and resource management in cloud computing, analyzing their methodologies, performance metrics, and practical applications. We also highlight emerging trends and future research directions, offering valuable insights into leveraging DRL to advance both job scheduling and resource management in cloud computing.

EmotiveTalk: Expressive Talking Head Generation through Audio Information Decoupling and Emotional Video Diffusion

Diffusion models have revolutionized the field of talking head generation, yet still face challenges in expressiveness, controllability, and stability in long-time generation. In this research, we propose an EmotiveTalk framework to address these issues. Firstly, to realize better control over the generation of lip movement and facial expression, a Vision-guided Audio Information Decoupling (V-AID) approach is designed to generate audio-based decoupled representations aligned with lip movements and expression. Specifically, to achieve alignment between audio and facial expression representation spaces, we present a Diffusion-based Co-speech Temporal Expansion (Di-CTE) module within V-AID to generate expression-related representations under multi-source emotion condition constraints. Then we propose a well-designed Emotional Talking Head Diffusion (ETHD) backbone to efficiently generate highly expressive talking head videos, which contains an Expression Decoupling Injection (EDI) module to automatically decouple the expressions from reference portraits while integrating the target expression information, achieving more expressive generation performance. Experimental results show that EmotiveTalk can generate expressive talking head videos, ensuring the promised controllability of emotions and stability during long-time generation, yielding state-of-the-art performance compared to existing methods.

Transferable Adversarial Attacks against ASR

Given the extensive research and real-world applications of automatic speech recognition (ASR), ensuring the robustness of ASR models against minor input perturbations becomes a crucial consideration for maintaining their effectiveness in real-time scenarios. Previous explorations into ASR model robustness have predominantly revolved around evaluating accuracy on white-box settings with full access to ASR models. Nevertheless, full ASR model details are often not available in real-world applications. Therefore, evaluating the robustness of black-box ASR models is essential for a comprehensive understanding of ASR model resilience. In this regard, we thoroughly study the vulnerability of practical black-box attacks in cutting-edge ASR models and propose to employ two advanced time-domain-based transferable attacks alongside our differentiable feature extractor. We also propose a speech-aware gradient optimization approach (SAGO) for ASR, which forces mistranscription with minimal impact on human imperceptibility through voice activity detection rule and a speech-aware gradient-oriented optimizer. Our comprehensive experimental results reveal performance enhancements compared to baseline approaches across five models on two databases.

Hi-SAM: Marrying Segment Anything Model for Hierarchical Text Segmentation

The Segment Anything Model (SAM), a profound vision foundation model pretrained on a large-scale dataset, breaks the boundaries of general segmentation and sparks various downstream applications. This paper introduces Hi-SAM, a unified model leveraging SAM for hierarchical text segmentation. Hi-SAM excels in segmentation across four hierarchies, including pixel-level text, word, text-line, and paragraph, while realizing layout analysis as well. Specifically, we first turn SAM into a high-quality pixel-level text segmentation (TS) model through a parameter-efficient fine-tuning approach. We use this TS model to iteratively generate the pixel-level text labels in a semi-automatical manner, unifying labels across the four text hierarchies in the HierText dataset. Subsequently, with these complete labels, we launch the end-to-end trainable Hi-SAM based on the TS architecture with a customized hierarchical mask decoder. During inference, Hi-SAM offers both automatic mask generation (AMG) mode and promptable segmentation (PS) mode. In the AMG mode, Hi-SAM segments pixel-level text foreground masks initially, then samples foreground points for hierarchical text mask generation and achieves layout analysis in passing. As for the PS mode, Hi-SAM provides word, text-line, and paragraph masks with a single point click. Experimental results show the state-of-the-art performance of our TS model: 84.86% fgIOU on Total-Text and 88.96% fgIOU on TextSeg for pixel-level text segmentation. Moreover, compared to the previous specialist for joint hierarchical detection and layout analysis on HierText, Hi-SAM achieves significant improvements: 4.73% PQ and 5.39% F1 on the text-line level, 5.49% PQ and 7.39% F1 on the paragraph level layout analysis, requiring $20\times$ fewer training epochs. The code is available at https://github.com/ymy-k/Hi-SAM.

Crystal Structure Prediction and Phase Stability in Highly Anharmonic Silver-Based Chalcohalide Anti-Perovskites

Silver-based chalcohalide anti-perovskites (CAP), Ag$_{3}$BC (B = S, Se; C = Cl, Br, I), represent an emerging family of energy materials with intriguing optoelectronic, vibrational and ionic transport properties. However, the structural features and phase stability of CAP remain poorly investigated to date, hindering their fundamental understanding and potential integration into technological applications. Here we employ theoretical first-principles methods based on density functional theory to fill this knowledge gap. Through crystal structure prediction techniques, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and quasi-harmonic free energy calculations, we unveil a series of previously overlooked energetically competitive phases and temperature-induced phase transitions for all CAP. Specifically, we identify a new cubic $P2_{1}3$ structure as the stable phase of all CAP containing S both at zero temperature and $T \neq 0$ K conditions. Consequently, our calculations suggest that the cubic $Pm\overline{3}m$ phase identified in room-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments is likely to be metastable. Furthermore, for CAP containing Se, we propose different orthorhombic ($Pca2_{1}$ and $P2_{1}2_{1}2_{1}$) and cubic ($I2_{1}3$) structures as the ground-state phases and reveal several phase transformations induced by temperature. This theoretical investigation not only identifies new candidate ground-state phases and solid-solid phase transformations for all CAP but also provides insights into potential stability issues affecting these highly anharmonic superionic materials.

Transition time of a bouncing drop

Contact time of bouncing drops is one of the most essential parameters to quantify the water-repellency of surfaces. Generally, the contact time on superhydrophobic surfaces is known to be Weber number-independent. Here, we probe an additional characteristic time, \emph{transition time} inherent in water drop impacting on superhydrophobic surfaces, marking a switch from a predominantly lateral to an axial motion. Systematic experiments and numerical simulations show that the transition time is also Weber number-independent and accounts for half the contact time. Additionally we identify a Weber-independent partition of volume at the maximum spreading state between the rim and lamella and show that the latter contains 1/4 of the total volume of the drop.

BOXR: Body and head motion Optimization framework for eXtended Reality

The emergence of standalone XR systems has enhanced user mobility, accommodating both subtle, frequent head motions and substantial, less frequent body motions. However, the pervasively used M2D latency metric, which measures the delay between the most recent motion and its corresponding display update, only accounts for head motions. This oversight can leave users prone to motion sickness if significant body motion is involved. Although existing methods optimize M2D latency through asynchronous task scheduling and reprojection methods, they introduce challenges like resource contention between tasks and outdated pose data. These challenges are further complicated by user motion dynamics and scene changes during runtime. To address these issues, we for the first time introduce the C2D latency metric, which captures the delay caused by body motions, and present BOXR, a framework designed to co-optimize both body and head motion delays within an XR system. BOXR enhances the coordination between M2D and C2D latencies by efficiently scheduling tasks to avoid contentions while maintaining an up-to-date pose in the output frame. Moreover, BOXR incorporates a motion-driven visual inertial odometer to adjust to user motion dynamics and employs scene-dependent foveated rendering to manage changes in the scene effectively. Our evaluations show that BOXR significantly outperforms state-of-the-art solutions in 11 EuRoC MAV datasets across 4 XR applications across 3 hardware platforms. In controlled motion and scene settings, BOXR reduces M2D and C2D latencies by up to 63% and 27%, respectively and increases frame rate by up to 43%. In practical deployments, BOXR achieves substantial reductions in real-world scenarios up to 42% in M2D latency and 31% in C2D latency while maintaining remarkably low miss rates of only 1.6% for M2D requirements and 1.0% for C2D requirements.

Toward a Predictive eXtended Reality Teleoperation System with Duo-Virtual Spaces

Extended Reality (XR) provides a more intuitive interaction method for teleoperating robots compared to traditional 2D controls. Recent studies have laid the groundwork for usable teleoperation with XR, but it fails in tasks requiring rapid motion and precise manipulations due to the large delay between user motion and agent feedback. In this work, we profile the end-to-end latency in a state-of-the-art XR teleoperation system and propose our idea to optimize the latency by implementing a duo-virtual spaces design and localizing the agent and objects in the user-side virtual space, while calibrating with periodic ground-truth poses from the agent-side virtual space.

Visual SLAM with 3D Gaussian Primitives and Depth Priors Enabling Novel View Synthesis

Conventional geometry-based SLAM systems lack dense 3D reconstruction capabilities since their data association usually relies on feature correspondences. Additionally, learning-based SLAM systems often fall short in terms of real-time performance and accuracy. Balancing real-time performance with dense 3D reconstruction capabilities is a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a real-time RGB-D SLAM system that incorporates a novel view synthesis technique, 3D Gaussian Splatting, for 3D scene representation and pose estimation. This technique leverages the real-time rendering performance of 3D Gaussian Splatting with rasterization and allows for differentiable optimization in real time through CUDA implementation. We also enable mesh reconstruction from 3D Gaussians for explicit dense 3D reconstruction. To estimate accurate camera poses, we utilize a rotation-translation decoupled strategy with inverse optimization. This involves iteratively updating both in several iterations through gradient-based optimization. This process includes differentiably rendering RGB, depth, and silhouette maps and updating the camera parameters to minimize a combined loss of photometric loss, depth geometry loss, and visibility loss, given the existing 3D Gaussian map. However, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) struggles to accurately represent surfaces due to the multi-view inconsistency of 3D Gaussians, which can lead to reduced accuracy in both camera pose estimation and scene reconstruction. To address this, we utilize depth priors as additional regularization to enforce geometric constraints, thereby improving the accuracy of both pose estimation and 3D reconstruction. We also provide extensive experimental results on public benchmark datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods in terms of pose accuracy, geometric accuracy, and rendering performance.

Advancements in Translation Accuracy for Stereo Visual-Inertial Initialization

As the current initialization method in the state-of-the-art Stereo Visual-Inertial SLAM framework, ORB-SLAM3 has limitations. Its success depends on the performance of the pure stereo SLAM system and is based on the underlying assumption that pure visual SLAM can accurately estimate the camera trajectory, which is essential for inertial parameter estimation. Meanwhile, the further improved initialization method for ORB-SLAM3, known as Stereo-NEC, is time-consuming due to applying keypoint tracking to estimate gyroscope bias with normal epipolar constraints. To address the limitations of previous methods, this paper proposes a method aimed at enhancing translation accuracy during the initialization stage. The fundamental concept of our method is to improve the translation estimate with a 3 Degree-of-Freedom (DoF) Bundle Adjustment (BA), independently, while the rotation estimate is fixed, instead of using ORB-SLAM3's 6-DoF BA. Additionally, the rotation estimate will be updated by considering IMU measurements and gyroscope bias, unlike ORB-SLAM3's rotation, which is directly obtained from stereo visual odometry and may yield inferior results when operating in challenging scenarios. We also conduct extensive evaluations on the public benchmark, the EuRoC dataset, demonstrating that our method excels in accuracy.

MIMONet: Multi-Input Multi-Output On-Device Deep Learning

Future intelligent robots are expected to process multiple inputs simultaneously (such as image and audio data) and generate multiple outputs accordingly (such as gender and emotion), similar to humans. Recent research has shown that multi-input single-output (MISO) deep neural networks (DNN) outperform traditional single-input single-output (SISO) models, representing a significant step towards this goal. In this paper, we propose MIMONet, a novel on-device multi-input multi-output (MIMO) DNN framework that achieves high accuracy and on-device efficiency in terms of critical performance metrics such as latency, energy, and memory usage. Leveraging existing SISO model compression techniques, MIMONet develops a new deep-compression method that is specifically tailored to MIMO models. This new method explores unique yet non-trivial properties of the MIMO model, resulting in boosted accuracy and on-device efficiency. Extensive experiments on three embedded platforms commonly used in robotic systems, as well as a case study using the TurtleBot3 robot, demonstrate that MIMONet achieves higher accuracy and superior on-device efficiency compared to state-of-the-art SISO and MISO models, as well as a baseline MIMO model we constructed. Our evaluation highlights the real-world applicability of MIMONet and its potential to significantly enhance the performance of intelligent robotic systems.

Genie: Smart ROS-based Caching for Connected Autonomous Robots

Despite the promising future of autonomous robots, several key issues currently remain that can lead to compromised performance and safety. One such issue is latency, where we find that even the latest embedded platforms from NVIDIA fail to execute intelligence tasks (e.g., object detection) of autonomous vehicles in a real-time fashion. One remedy to this problem is the promising paradigm of edge computing. Through collaboration with our industry partner, we identify key prohibitive limitations of the current edge mindset: (1) servers are not distributed enough and thus, are not close enough to vehicles, (2) current proposed edge solutions do not provide substantially better performance and extra information specific to autonomous vehicles to warrant their cost to the user, and (3) the state-of-the-art solutions are not compatible with popular frameworks used in autonomous systems, particularly the Robot Operating System (ROS). To remedy these issues, we provide Genie, an encapsulation technique that can enable transparent caching in ROS in a non-intrusive way (i.e., without modifying the source code), can build the cache in a distributed manner (in contrast to traditional central caching methods), and can construct a collective three-dimensional object map to provide substantially better latency (even on low-power edge servers) and higher quality data to all vehicles in a certain locality. We fully implement our design on state-of-the-art industry-adopted embedded and edge platforms, using the prominent autonomous driving software Autoware, and find that Genie can enhance the latency of Autoware Vision Detector by 82% on average, enable object reusability 31% of the time on average and as much as 67% for the incoming requests, and boost the confidence in its object map considerably over time.

Cross-modulated Attention Transformer for RGBT Tracking

Existing Transformer-based RGBT trackers achieve remarkable performance benefits by leveraging self-attention to extract uni-modal features and cross-attention to enhance multi-modal feature interaction and template-search correlation computation. Nevertheless, the independent search-template correlation calculations ignore the consistency between branches, which can result in ambiguous and inappropriate correlation weights. It not only limits the intra-modal feature representation, but also harms the robustness of cross-attention for multi-modal feature interaction and search-template correlation computation. To address these issues, we propose a novel approach called Cross-modulated Attention Transformer (CAFormer), which performs intra-modality self-correlation, inter-modality feature interaction, and search-template correlation computation in a unified attention model, for RGBT tracking. In particular, we first independently generate correlation maps for each modality and feed them into the designed Correlation Modulated Enhancement module, modulating inaccurate correlation weights by seeking the consensus between modalities. Such kind of design unifies self-attention and cross-attention schemes, which not only alleviates inaccurate attention weight computation in self-attention but also eliminates redundant computation introduced by extra cross-attention scheme. In addition, we propose a collaborative token elimination strategy to further improve tracking inference efficiency and accuracy. Extensive experiments on five public RGBT tracking benchmarks show the outstanding performance of the proposed CAFormer against state-of-the-art methods.
