Global center of polynomial Newton system and its non-isochronicity

Using a new compactification (toroidal compactification) and desingularization, we obtain a complete characterization of monodromy at infinity for polynomial Newton system of arbitrary degree, in which we establish an equivalence between the monodromy and the non-existence of 1/2-fractional formal invariant curves. Combining the complete characterization with either Darboux integrability or algebraic reducibility of local centers, we obtain conditions for all cases of global center. Furthermore, investigating the asymptotic behavior of the period function of orbits near infinity, we prove the non-isochronicity for the global center, which consequently solves an open problem proposed by Conti.

Liouvillian integrability of vector fields in higher dimensions

We consider complex rational vector fields in dimension $n>2$ (equivalently, differential forms of degree $n-1$ in $n$ variables) which admit a Liouvillian first integral. Extending a classical result by Singer for $n=2$, our main result states that there exists a first integral which is obtained by two successive integrations from one-forms with coefficients in a finite algebraic extension of the rational function field. The proof uses Puiseux series in a novel way to simplify computations. We also apply this method to give elementary proofs of Singer's theorem for rational one-forms, and of the Prelle-Singer theorem on elementary integrability of rational vector fields.

Liouvillian integrability of rational vector fields: The case of algebraic extensions

As shown in a previous paper, whenever a rational vector field on $\mathbb C^n$, $n>2$, is Liouvillian integrable, then it admits a first integral obtained by two successive integrations from a one-form with coefficients in a finite algebraic extension $L$ of the rational function field $K$. In the present work we discuss and characterize exceptional vector fields in this class, for which -- by definition -- the choice $L=K$ is not possible. In particular we show that exceptional vector field exist, giving explicit constructions in dimension three.

On elementary integrability of rational vector fields

We consider complex rational vector fields that admit a first integral whose logarithmic derivative lies in a finite extension of the rational function field $K$. In view of the Prelle-Singer theorem, these are the rational vector fields that admit an elementary first integral. Elementary integrable vector fields which are not Darboux integrable -- thus the extension field is necessarily a proper extension of $K$ -- may be called exceptional by an observation in an earlier paper by Christopher et al. For dimension two we characterize all possible algebraic extension fields underlying the exceptional cases, provide a construction of all exceptional vector fields, and obtain some criteria that restrict the degree of $L$.

Liouvillian integrability of three dimensional vector fields

We consider a three dimensional complex polynomial, or rational, vector field (equivalently, a two-form in three variables) which admits a Liouvillian first integral. We prove that there exists a first integral whose differential is the product of a rational 1-form with a Darboux function, or there exists a Darboux Jacobi multiplier. Moreover, we prove that Liouvillian integrability {in any dimension $n\geq 3$} always implies the existence of a first integral that is obtained by two successive integrations from one-forms with coefficients in a finite algebraic extension of the rational function field.

Local Integrability and Linearizability of Three-dimensional Lotka-Volterra Systems

We investigate the local integrability and linearizability of three dimensional Lotka-Volterra equations at the origin. Necessary and sufficient conditions for both integrability and linearizability are obtained for (1,-1,1), (2,-1,1) and (1,-2,1)-resonance. To prove sufficiency, we mainly use the method of Darboux with extensions for inverse Jacobi multipliers, and the linearizability of a node in two variables with power-series arguments in the third variable.

On the trigonometric moment problem

The trigonometric moment problem arises from the study of one-parameter families of centers in polynomial vector fields. It asks for the classification of the trigonometric polynomials $Q$ which are orthogonal to all powers of a trigonometric polynomial $P$. We show that this problem has a simple and natural solution under certain conditions on the monodromy group of the Laurent polynomial associated to $P$. In the case of real trigonometric polynomials, which is the primary motivation of the problem, our conditions are shown to hold for all trigonometric polynomials of degree 15 or less. In the complex case, we show that there are a small number of exceptional monodromy groups up to degree 30 where the conditions fail to hold and show how counter-examples can be constructed in several of these cases.

The moduli space of germs of generic families of analytic diffeomorphisms unfolding a parabolic fixed point

In this paper we describe the moduli space of germs of generic families of analytic diffeomorphisms which unfold a parabolic fixed point of codimension 1. In [MRR] (and also [R]), it was shown that the Ecalle-Voronin modulus can be unfolded to give a complete modulus for such germs. The modulus is defined on a ramified sector in the canonical perturbation parameter $\eps$. As in the case of the Ecalle-Voronin modulus, the modulus is defined up to a linear scaling depending only on $\eps$. Here, we characterize the moduli space for such unfoldings by finding the compatibility conditions on the modulus which are necessary and sufficient for realization as the modulus of an unfolding. The compatibility condition is obtained by considering the region of sectorial overlap in $\eps$-space. This lies in the Glutsyuk sector where the two fixed points are hyperbolic and connected by the orbits of the diffeomorphism. In this region we have two representatives of the modulus which describe the same dynamics. We identify the necessary compatibility condition between these two representatives by comparing them both with their common Glutsyuk modulus. The compatibility condition implies the existence of a linear scaling for which the modulus is 1/2-summable in $\eps$, whose direction of non-summability coincides with the direction of real multipliers at the fixed points. Conversely, we show that the compatibility condition (which implies the summability property) is sufficient to realize the modulus as coming from an analytic unfolding, thus giving a complete description of the space of moduli.

Monodromy and Tangential Center Problems

We consider families of Abelian integrals arising from perturbations of planar Hamiltonian systems. The tangential center focus problem asks for the conditions under which these integrals vanish identically. The problem is closely related to the monodromy problem, which asks when the monodromy of a vanishing cycle generates the whole homology of the level curves of the Hamiltonian. We solve both these questions for the case when the Hamiltonian is hyperelliptic. As a side-product, we solve the corresponding problems for the "0-dimensional Abelian integrals" defined by Gavrilov and Movasati.
