Inertial manifolds for the nonlocal parabolic problem

This paper provides an abstract framework for studying inertial manifolds associated with a class of nonlocal parabolic problems. In particular, by suitably modifying the nonlocal term outside the absorbing ball and changing the scale of time, we derive a corresponding spectral gap condition. As applications, we establish the existence of inertial manifolds for two classes of two-dimensional modified nonlocal parabolic equations on a square domain, whose diffusion coefficients depend on the $L^2$-norm of the solution and of its gradient, respectively.

On the attractor of the semi-dissipative Boussinesq equations revised

In this paper, we continue investigate the structure of the weak $\sigma$-attractor $\mathcal{A}$ for the 2D Boussinesq equations with viscosity and without heat diffusion. Specifically, we show that the projection of the attractor $\mathcal{A}$ onto the temperature component is surjective, i.e., $P_{\theta}\mathcal{A}=L^2$; and, for any $r>0$, the projection of $\mathcal{A}_r$ onto the velocity component contains a infinite-dimensional Hilbert ellipsoid, which implies $P_u\mathcal{A}_r$ is infinite dimensional immediately.

Smoothness of Inertial Manifold for the Burgers Equation

This paper establishes a ${C^{n,\varepsilon }}$-smooth extension of the inertial manifold for the one-dimensional Burgers equation, which demonstrates that its long-time behavior can be completely determined by explicit smooth first-order ODEs. We first devise a new framework for an abstract equation with two nonlinear terms, where one preserves regularity and the other reduces regularity, and derive sufficient conditions for constructing the ${C^{n,\varepsilon}}$-smooth extension of the IM by treating these two nonlinear terms separately.

Non-concentration phenomenon for one dimensional reaction-diffusion systems with mass dissipation

Reaction-diffusion systems with mass dissipation are known to possess blow-up solutions in high dimensions when the nonlinearities have super quadratic growth rates. In dimension one, it has been shown recently that one can have global existence of bounded solutions if nonlinearities are at most cubic. For the cubic intermediate sum condition, i.e. nonlinearities might have arbitrarily high growth rates, an additional entropy inequality had to be imposed. In this article, we remove this extra entropy assumption completely and obtain global boundedness for reaction-diffusion systems with cubic intermediate sum condition. The novel idea is to show a non-concentration phenomenon for mass dissipating systems, that is the mass dissipation implies a dissipation in a Morrey space $\mathsf{M}^{1,δ}(Ω)$ for some $δ>0$. As far as we are concerned, it is the first time such a bound is derived for mass dissipating reaction-diffusion systems. The results are then applied to obtain global existence and boundedness of solutions to an oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky system, which satisfies cubic intermediate sum condition but does not fulfill the entropy assumption. Extensions include global existence mass controlled systems with slightly-super cubic intermediate sum condition.

Analysis of mass controlled reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinearities having critical growth rates

We analyze semilinear reaction-diffusion systems that are mass controlled, and have nonlinearities that satisfy critical growth rates. The systems under consideration are only assumed to satisfy natural assumptions, namely the preservation of non-negativity and a control of the total mass. It is proved in dimension one that if nonlinearities have (slightly super-) cubic growth rates then the system has a unique global classical solutions. Moreover, in the case of mass dissipation, the solution is bounded uniformly in time in sup-norm. One key idea in the proof is the Hölder continuity of gradient of solutions to parabolic equation with possibly discontinuous diffusion coefficients and low regular forcing terms. When the system possesses additionally an entropy inequality, the global existence and boundedness of a unique classical solution is shown for nonlinearities satisfying a cubic intermediate sum condition, which is a significant generalization of cubic growth rates. The main idea in this case is to combine a modified Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and the newly developed $L^p$-energy method in \cite{morgan2021global,fitzgibbon2021reaction}. This idea also allows us to deal with the case of discontinuous diffusion coefficients in higher dimensions, which has \blue{only recently been touched} in the context of mass controlled reaction-diffusion systems.

Kolmogorov $\varepsilon$-entropy of the uniform attractor for a wave equation

This paper is concerned with a non-autonomous sup-cubic semilinear wave equation in a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb R^{3}$, using the introduced weak topology entropy, we obtain an upper bound for the $\varepsilon$-entropy of the uniform attractor for the case where the external forces are not translation-compact.

Entropy estimates for uniform attractors of dissipative PDEs with non translation-compact external forces

We study the Kolmogorov's entropy of uniform attractors for non-autonomous dissipative PDEs. The main attention is payed to the case where the external forces are not translation-compact. We present a new general scheme which allows us to give the upper bounds of this entropy for various classes of external forces through the entropy of proper projections of their hulls to the space of translation-compact functions. This result generalizes well known estimates of Vishik and Chepyzhov for the translation-compact case. The obtained results are applied to three model problems: sub-quintic 3D damped wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, quintic 3D wave equation with periodic boundary conditions and 2D Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain. The examples of finite-dimensional uniform attractors for some special external forces which are not translation-compact are also given.

Inertial manifolds for 3D complex Ginzburg-Landau equations with periodic boundary conditions

We prove the existence of an Inertial Manifold for 3D complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with periodic boundary conditions as well as for more general cross-diffusion system assuming that the dispersive exponent is not vanishing. The result is obtained under the assumption that the parameters of the equation is chosen in such a way that the finite-time blow up of smooth solutions does not take place. For the proof of this result we utilize the recently suggested method of spatio-temporal averaging.

Inertial manifolds via spatial averaging revisited

The paper gives a comprehensive study of inertial manifolds for semilinear parabolic equations and their smoothness using the spatial averaging method suggested by G. Sell and J. Mallet-Paret. We present a universal approach which covers the most part of known results obtained via this method as well as gives a number of new ones. Among our applications are reaction-diffusion equations, various types of generalized Cahn-Hilliard equations, including fractional and 6th order Cahn-Hilliard equations and several classes of modified Navier-Stokes equations including the Leray-$α$ regularization, hyperviscous regularization and their combinations. All of the results are obtained in 3D case with periodic boundary conditions.

Reaction-diffusion systems with supercritical nonlinearities revisited

We give a comprehensive study of the analytic properties and long-time behavior of solutions of a reaction-diffusion system in a bounded domain in the case where the nonlinearity satisfies the standard monotonicity assumption. We pay the main attention to the supercritical case, where the nonlinearity is not subordinated to the linear part of the equation trying to put as small as possible amount of extra restrictions on this nonlinearity. The properties of such systems in the supercritical case may be very different in comparison with the standard case of subordinated nonlinearities. We examine the global existence and uniqueness of weak and strong solutions, various types of smoothing properties, asymptotic compactness and the existence of global and exponential attractors.

Infinite energy solutions for weakly damped quintic wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$

The paper gives a comprehensive study of infinite-energy solutions and their long-time behavior for semi-linear weakly damped wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with quintic nonlinearities. This study includes global well-posedness of the so-called Shatah-Struwe solutions, their dissipativity, the existence of a locally compact global attractors (in the uniformly local phase spaces) and their extra regularity.

Pullback Attractors for a Critical Degenerate Wave Equation with Time-dependent Damping

The aim of this paper is to analyze the long-time dynamical behavior of the solution for a degenerate wave equation with time-dependent damping term $\partial_{tt}u + β(t)\partial_tu = \mathcal{L}u(x,t) + f(u)$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under some restrictions on $β(t)$ and critical growth restrictions on the nonlinear term $f$, we will prove the local and global well-posedness of the solution and derive the existence of a pullback attractor for the process associated with the degenerate damped hyperbolic problem.

Inertial manifolds for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

In this article, we devote to the existence of an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ ($d=2,3$). Our results can be summarized as two aspects: Firstly, we construct an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{T}^{2}$; Secondly, we extend slightly the spatial averaging method to the abstract case: $\partial_{t}u+A^{1+α}u+A^αF(u)=f$ (here $0<α<1$, $A>0$ is a self-adjoint operator with compact inverse and $F$ is Lipschitz from a Hilbert space $\mathbb{H}$ to $\mathbb{H}$), and then verify the existence of an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equation with the hyperviscous index $5/4$ in $\mathbb{T}^{3}$.

Deterministic and random attractors for a wave equation with sign changing damping

The paper gives a detailed study of long-time dynamics generated by weakly damped wave equations in bounded 3D domains where the damping exponent depends explicitly on time and may change sign. It is shown that in the case when the non-linearity is superlinear, the considered equation remains dissipative if the weighted mean value of the dissipation rate remains positive and that the conditions of this type are not sufficient in the linear case. Two principally different cases are considered. In the case when this mean is uniform (which corresponds to deterministic dissipation rates), it is shown that the considered system possesses smooth uniform attractors as well as non-autonomous exponential attractors. In the case where the mean is not uniform (which corresponds to the random dissipation rate, for instance, when this dissipation rate is generated by the Bernoulli process), the tempered random attractor is constructed. In contrast to the usual situation, this random attractor is expected to have infinite Hausdorff and fractal dimension. The simplified model example which demonstrates infinite-dimensionality of the random attractor is also presented.

Quasi-geostrophic equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$

Solvability of Cauchy's problem in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for subcritical quasi-geostrophic equation is discussed here in two phase spaces; $L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $p> \frac{2}{2α-1}$ and $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $s>1$. A solution to that equation in critical case is obtained next as a limit of the $H^s$-solutions to subcritical equations when the exponent $α$ of $(-Δ)^α$ tends to $\frac{1}{2}^+$. Such idea seems to be new in the literature. Existence of the global attractor in subcritical case is discussed in the paper. In section 7 we also discuss solvability of the critical problem with Dirichlet boundary condition in bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$, when $\| θ_0 \|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$ is small.

Non-autonomous dynamics of wave equations with nonlinear damping and critical nonlinearity

The authors consider non-autonomous dynamical behavior of wave-type evolutionary equations with nonlinear damping and critical nonlinearity. These type of waves equations are formulated as non-autonomous dynamical systems (namely, cocycles). A sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of pullback attractors is established for norm-to-weak continuous non-autonomous dynamical systems, in terms of pullback asymptotic compactness or pullback $κ-$contraction criteria. A technical method for verifying pullback asymptotic compactness, via contractive functions, is devised. These results are then applied to the wave-type evolutionary equations with nonlinear damping and critical nonlinearity, to obtain the existence of pullback attractors. The required pullback asymptotic compactness for the existence of pullback attractors is fulfilled by some new a priori estimates for concrete wave type equations arising from applications. Moreover, the pullback $κ-$contraction criterion for the existence of pullback attractors is of independent interest.

Uniform attractors for non-autonomous wave equations with nonlinear damping

We consider dynamical behavior of non-autonomous wave-type evolutionary equations with nonlinear damping, critical nonlinearity, and time-dependent external forcing which is translation bounded but not translation compact (i.e., external forcing is not necessarily time-periodic, quasi-periodic or almost periodic). A sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of uniform attractors is established using the concept of uniform asymptotic compactness. The required compactness for the existence of uniform attractors is then fulfilled by some new a priori estimates for concrete wave type equations arising from applications. The structure of uniform attractors is obtained by constructing a skew product flow on the extended phase space for the norm-to-weak continuous process.
