Recent progress on electron- and magnon-mediated torques

The growing demand for artificial intelligence and complex computing has underscored the urgent need for advanced data storage technologies. Spin-orbit torque (SOT) has emerged as a leading candidate for high-speed, high-density magnetic random-access memory due to its ultrafast switching speed and low power consumption. This review systematically explores the generation and switching mechanisms of electron-mediated torques (including both conventional SOTs and orbital torques) and magnon-mediated torques. We discuss key materials that enable these effects: heavy metals, topological insulators, low-crystal-symmetry materials, non-collinear antiferromagnets, and altermagnets for conventional SOTs; 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals for orbital torques; and antiferromagnetic insulator NiO- and multiferroic BiFeO3-based sandwich structures for magnon torques. We emphasize that although key components of SOT devices have been demonstrated, numerous promising materials and critical questions regarding their underlying mechanisms remain to be explored. Therefore, this field represents a dynamic and rapidly evolving frontier in spintronics, offering significant potential for advancing next-generation information storage and computational technologies.

Signatures of Valley Kondo Effect in Si/SiGe Quantum Dots

We report measurements consistent with the valley Kondo effect in Si/SiGe quantum dots, evidenced by peaks in the conductance versus source-drain voltage that show strong temperature dependence. The Kondo peaks show unusual behavior in a magnetic field that we interpret as arising from the valley degree of freedom. The interplay of valley and Zeeman splittings is suggested by the presence of side peaks, revealing a zero-field valley splitting between 0.28 to 0.34 meV. A zero-bias conductance peak for non-zero magnetic field, a phenomenon consistent with valley non- conservation in tunneling, is observed in two samples.

Laser and Microwave Excitations of Rabi Oscillations of a Single Nitrogen-Vacancy Electron Spin in Diamond

A collapse and revival shape of Rabi oscillations of a single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center electron spin has been observed in diamond at room temperature. Because of hyperfine interaction between the host 14N nuclear spin and NV center electron spin, different orientation of the 14N nuclear spin leads to a triplet splitting of the transition between the ground ms=0 and excited states ms=1. Microwave can excite the three transitions equally to induce three independent nutations and the shape of Rabi oscillations is a combination of the three nutations. This result provides an innovative view of electron spin oscillations in diamond.
