An efficient and robust fifth-order HWENO scheme with gradient reconstruction for compressible Navier--Stokes equations

In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust fifth-order finite-volume Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) scheme with gradient reconstruction for the compressible Navier--Stokes equations. The key idea is to construct weak-derivative moments for each dissipative variable by taking the arithmetic average of two HWENO interface traces, which are then processed componentwise through the standard scalar nonlinear HWENO reconstruction formula, with only the input moments differing from those used in the convective reconstruction, thereby supplying the gradients needed for the viscous fluxes. This reconstruction achieves fifth-order accuracy using only candidate polynomials of degree at most four, avoids the order reduction that would result from direct differentiation, and introduces negligible additional computational cost. To ensure robustness, especially in extreme test cases involving strong shocks or low densities, we apply a positivity-preserving limiter to the conservative states while retaining the nonlinear HWENO reconstruction for the viscous gradients. This combination is essential for stable computations in flows with strong gradients. Both the conservative and gradient reconstructions share the same compact stencils and candidate-polynomial structure, enabling a single implementation routine without introducing additional algorithmic complexity. Numerical results confirm that the proposed scheme delivers fifth-order accuracy and high resolution, offers competitive computational efficiency, and robustly resolves challenging finite-Reynolds-number Navier--Stokes flows in which the positivity-preserving limiter is actively engaged.

Provably realizability-preserving finite volume method for quadrature-based moment models of kinetic equations

Quadrature-based moment methods (QBMM) provide tractable closures for multiscale kinetic equations, with diverse applications across aerosols, sprays, and particulate flows, etc. However, for the derived hyperbolic moment-closure systems, seeking numerical schemes preserving moment realizability is essential yet challenging due to strong nonlinear coupling and the lack of explicit conservative-to-flux maps. This paper proposes and analyzes a provably realizability-preserving finite-volume method for five-moment systems closed by the two-node Gaussian-EQMOM and three-point HyQMOM. Rather than relying on kinetic fluxes, we recast the realizability condition into a nonnegative quadratic form in the moment vector, reducing the original nonlinear constraints to bilinear inequalities amenable to analysis. On this basis, we construct a tailored Harten--Lax--van Leer (HLL) flux with rigorously derived wave speeds and intermediate states that embed realizability directly into the flux evaluation. We prove sufficient realizability-preserving conditions under explicit Courant--Friedrichs--Lewy (CFL) constraints in the collisionless case, and for BGK relaxation, we obtain coupled time-step conditions involving a realizability radius; a semi-implicit BGK variant inherits the collisionless CFL. From a multiscale perspective, the analysis yields stability conditions uniform in the relaxation time and supports stiff-to-kinetic transitions. A practical limiter enforces strict realizability of reconstructed interface states without degrading accuracy. Numerical experiments demonstrate the accuracy, robustness in low-density regions, and realizability for both closures. This framework unifies realizability preservation for solving hyperbolic moment systems with complex closures and extends naturally to higher-order space--time discretizations.

High-Order Oscillation-Eliminating Hermite WENO Method for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws

This paper proposes high-order accurate, oscillation-eliminating Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (OE-HWENO) finite volume schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws. The OE-HWENO schemes apply an OE procedure after each Runge--Kutta stage, dampening the first-order moments of the HWENO solution to suppress spurious oscillations without any problem-dependent parameters. This OE procedure acts as a filter, derived from the solution operator of a novel damping equation, solved exactly without discretization. As a result, the OE-HWENO method remains stable with a normal CFL number, even for strong shocks producing highly stiff damping terms. To ensure the method's non-oscillatory property across varying scales and wave speeds, we design a scale- and evolution-invariant damping equation and propose a dimensionless transformation for HWENO reconstruction. The OE-HWENO method offers several advantages over existing HWENO methods: the OE procedure is efficient and easy to implement, requiring only simple multiplication of first-order moments; it preserves high-order accuracy, local compactness, and spectral properties. The non-intrusive OE procedure can be integrated seamlessly into existing HWENO codes. Finally, we analyze the bound-preserving (BP) property using optimal cell average decomposition, relaxing the BP time step-size constraint and reducing decomposition points, improving efficiency. Extensive benchmarks validate the method's accuracy, efficiency, resolution, and robustness.

A moment-based Hermite WENO scheme with unified stencils for hyperbolic conservation laws

In this paper, a fifth-order moment-based Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme with unified stencils (termed as HWENO-U) is proposed for hyperbolic conservation laws. The main idea of the HWENO-U scheme is to modify the first-order moment by a HWENO limiter only in the time discretizations using the same information of spatial reconstructions, in which the limiter not only overcomes spurious oscillations well, but also ensures the stability of the fully-discrete scheme. For the HWENO reconstructions, a new scale-invariant nonlinear weight is designed by incorporating only the integral average values of the solution, which keeps all properties of the original one while is more robust for simulating challenging problems with sharp scale variations. Compared with previous HWENO schemes, the advantages of the HWENO-U scheme are: (1) a simpler implemented process involving only a single HWENO reconstruction applied throughout the entire procedures without any modifications for the governing equations; (2) increased efficiency by utilizing the same candidate stencils, reconstructed polynomials, and linear and nonlinear weights in both the HWENO limiter and spatial reconstructions; (3) reduced problem-specific dependencies and improved rationality, as the nonlinear weights are identical for the function $u$ and its non-zero multiple $\zeta u$. Besides, the proposed scheme retains the advantages of previous HWENO schemes, including compact reconstructed stencils and the utilization of artificial linear weights. Extensive benchmarks are carried out to validate the accuracy, efficiency, resolution, and robustness of the proposed scheme.
