Electrical manipulation and detection of perpendicular altermagnetic order via proximitized Dirac semimetal

Altermagnets, which combine antiferromagnetic-like magnetic compensation with ferromagnetic-like broken time-reversal symmetry, hold great promise for high-density and ultrafast spintronic applications. However, the detection and switching of perpendicular altermagnetic order are fundamentally constrained by magnetic symmetry, restricting both fundamental studies and practical implementation. We realize robust electrical reading and deterministic switching of perpendicular altermagnetic order by designing a Dirac semimetal/altermagnet heterostructure of PtTe2/CrSb. This engineered interface enables anomalous Hall readout via altermagnetic proximity effect and delivers efficient spin-orbit torque for manipulating the epitaxial perpendicular Neel vector in CrSb. These findings significantly broaden the functional scope of altermagnetic heterostructures and pave the way for highly scalable altermagnetic memory.

Neutron Reflectometry Reveals Conformational Changes in a Mechanosensitive Protein Induced by an Antimicrobial Peptide in Tethered Lipid Bilayers

Membrane proteins serve a wide range of vital roles in the functioning of living organisms. Compared to other classes of proteins, determining membrane protein structures remains a challenge, in large part due to the difficulty in establishing experimental conditions that can preserve the correct conformation and function of the protein in isolation from its native environment. We investigated the ion channel in lipid vesicles and in a planar lipid bilayer. By using a polymeric tether our planar membrane mimetic was not constrained by the underlying solid substrate, making it sufficiently flexible to allow for increases in bilayer curvature and changes in membrane tension. We used quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), and polarised neutron reflectivity (PNR) to show the formation of MscL containing phospholipid bilayers, tethered with a high density PEG layer onto gold substrates from vesicle rupture. The MscL containing vesicles were separately characterised with small angle neutron scattering (SANS). MscL was expressed into vesicles using cell free protein expression. Analysing these vesicles with small angle neutron scattering, the radius of gyration of the protein was determined to be between 26-29~\AA{}, consistent with the crystal structure of individual MscL channels. The MscL composition of the formed bilayer was 14\%$v/v$, close to the initial composition of the vesicles, and a protein protrusion extending ca. 46~\AA{} into the solvent was determined by PNR. Addition of 1.6 and 3.2 $\mu$M pexiganan resulted in a decrease in the protrusion of MscL (from $\sim$46 to $\sim$38~\AA{}). To our knowledge, these findings represent the first direct experimental evidence of a structural change in the C-terminus containing protrusion of MscL, triggered by an antimicrobial peptide.

Persistent Uncorrelated Magnetic Domains in Fe/Si Multilayers and their suppression by incorporating 11B4C

This study investigates magnetic domains in Fe/Si and Fe/Si + B4C multilayers using spin flip off-specular polarized neutron reflectometry. The results show that Fe/Si multilayers exhibit pronounced spin flip off-specular scattering originating from magnetic domains that are uncorrelated out of plane. With increasing external magnetic field the domains progressively coalesce and their magnetization rotates toward alignment with the applied field, approaching a homogeneous magnetic state at higher fields. In contrast, Fe/Si + B4C multilayers exhibit no detectable spin flip off-specular scattering already at low fields, indicating that the multilayer reaches magnetic saturation at significantly lower applied fields. The scattering patterns are interpreted using distorted wave Born approximation simulations in BornAgain, enabled by our added code for simulating magnetic domains and magnetic ordering. To further probe the magnetic behavior, low-energy mu+SR measurements were performed, representing the first mu+SR investigation of polarizing neutron optics multilayers. Together with comparison to previously reported VSM data, these measurements provide insight into the magnetic behavior across short range, medium range, and long range length scales. The results show that incorporating approximately 15 vol.% B4C makes the magnetic configuration highly responsive to external magnetic fields, with clear sensitivity to both in-plane and out-of-plane field geometries. These results show that B4C suppresses magnetic domains and spin flip off-specular scattering, improving Fe/Si coatings for neutron polarization optics in regards to off-specular scattering, and other applications requiring easy magnetic manipulation.
