A stabilized scheme satisfying the discrete maximum principle for a time fractional convection-diffusion-reaction equation

We study a time fractional convection-diffusion-reaction equation in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. A stabilized numerical scheme satisfying a discrete maximum principle is constructed by combining the conforming linear finite element method with the algebraic flux correction method. The resulting semi-discrete scheme is nonlinear, and its well-posedness is established. Assuming nonsmooth initial data, we derive error estimates for the semi-discrete scheme using energy arguments. For the temporal discretization, we employ the L1 method, obtaining a fully discrete scheme for which we prove well-posedness and the discrete maximum principle. We also present numerical experiments that validate the order of convergence as well as we test our schemes to solutions that possess layers.

Error analysis of a backward Euler positive preserving stabilized scheme for a Chemotaxis system

For a Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis in two spatial dimensions we consider a modification of a positivity preserving fully discrete scheme using a local extremum diminishing flux limiter. We discretize space using piecewise linear finite elements on an quasiuniform triangulation of acute type and time by the backward Euler method. We assume that initial data are sufficiently small in order not to have a blow-up of the solution. Under appropriate assumptions on the regularity of the exact solution and the time step parameter we show existence of the fully discrete approximation and derive error bounds in $L^{2}$ for the cell density and $H^{1}$ for the chemical concentration. We also present numerical experiments to illustrate the theoretical results.

Numerical analysis of a stabilized scheme for an optimal control problem governed by a parabolic convection--diffusion equation

We consider an optimal control problem on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2,$ governed by a parabolic convection--diffusion--reaction equation with pointwise control constraints. We follow the optimize--then--discretize approach, in which the state and co-state variables are discretized using the piecewise linear finite element method. For stabilization, we apply the algebraic flux correction method. Temporal discretization is performed using the backward Euler method. The discrete control variable is obtained by projecting the discretized adjoint state onto the set of admissible controls. The resulting stabilized fully--discrete scheme is nonlinear and a fixed point argument is used to prove its existence and uniqueness under a mild condition between the time step $k$ and the mesh size $h,$ e.g., $k = \mathcal{O}(h).$ Furthermore, assuming sufficient regularity of the exact solution, we derive error estimates in the $L^{2}$ and energy norms with respect to the spatial variable, and in the $\ell^\infty$ norm with respect to time for the state and co-state variables. For the control variable, we also derive an $L^{2}$-norm error estimate with respect to space and an $\ell^\infty$-norm estimate in time. Finally, we present numerical experiments that validate the the order of convergence of the stabilized fully--discrete scheme based on the algebraic flux correction method. We also test the stabilized fully--discrete scheme in optimal control problems that governed by a convection--dominant equation where the solution possesses interior layers.

Error analysis of an Algebraic Flux Correction Scheme for a nonlinear Scalar Conservation Law Using SSP-RK2

We consider a scalar conservation law with linear and nonlinear flux function on a bounded domain $Ω\subset{\R}^2$ with Lipschitz boundary $\partialΩ.$ We discretize the spatial variable with the standard finite element method where we use a local extremum diminishing flux limiter which is linearity preserving. For temporal discretization, we use the second order explicit strong stability preserving Runge--Kutta method. It is known that the resulting fully-discrete scheme satisfies the discrete maximum principle. Under the sufficiently regularity of the weak solution and the CFL condition $k = \mathcal{O}(h^2)$, we derive error estimates in $L^{2}-$ norm for the algebraic flux correction scheme in space and in $\ell^\infty$ in time. We also present numerical experiments that validate that the fully-discrete scheme satisfies the temporal order of convergence of the fully-discrete scheme that we proved in the theoretical analysis.
