Sensing-Assisted Eavesdropper Estimation: An ISAC Breakthrough in Physical Layer Security

In this paper, we investigate the sensing-aided physical layer security (PLS) towards Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems. A well-known limitation of PLS is the need to have information about potential eavesdroppers (Eves). The sensing functionality of ISAC offers an enabling role here, by estimating the directions of potential Eves to inform PLS. In our approach, the ISAC base station (BS) firstly emits an omni-directional waveform to search for potential Eves' directions by employing the combined Capon and approximate maximum likelihood (CAML) technique. Using the resulting information about potential Eves, we formulate secrecy rate expressions, that are a function of the Eves' estimation accuracy. We then formulate a weighted optimization problem to simultaneously maximize the secrecy rate and minimize the CRB with the aid of the artificial noise (AN), and minimize the CRB of targets'/Eves' estimation. By taking the possible estimation errors into account, we enforce a beampattern constraint with a wide main beam covering all possible directions of Eves. This implicates that security needs to be enforced in all these directions. By improving estimation accuracy, the sensing and security functionalities provide mutual benefits, resulting in improvement of the mutual performances with every iteration of the optimization, until convergence. Our results avail of these mutual benefits and reveal the usefulness of sensing as an enabler for practical PLS.

NOMA Made Practical: Removing the Receive SIC Processing through Interference Exploitation

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a powerful transmission technique that enhances the spectral efficiency of communication links, and is being investigated for 5G standards and beyond. A major drawback of NOMA is the need to apply successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver on a symbol-by-symbol basis, which limits its practicality. To circumvent this, in this paper a novel constructive multiple access (CoMA) scheme is proposed and investigated. CoMA aligns the superimposed signals to the different users constructively to the signal of interest. Since the superimposed signal aligns with the data signal, there is no need to remove it at the receiver using SIC. Accordingly, SIC component can be removed at the receiver side. In this regard and in order to provide a comprehensive investigation and comparison, different optimization problems for user paring NOMA multiple-input-single-output (MISO) systems are considered. Firstly, an optimal precoder to minimize the total transmission power for CoMA subject to a quality-of-service constraint is obtained, and compared to conventional NOMA. Then, a precoder that minimizes the CoMA symbol error rate (SER) subject to power constraint is investigated. Further, the computational complexity of CoMA is considered and compared with conventional NOMA scheme in terms of total number of complex operations. The results in this paper prove the superiority of the proposed CoMA scheme over the conventional NOMA technique, and demonstrate that CoMA is an attractive solution for user paring NOMA MISO systems with low number of BS antennas, while circumventing the receive SIC complexity.

Low Complexity SLP: An Inversion-Free, Parallelizable ADMM Approach

We propose a parallel constructive interference (CI)-based symbol-level precoding (SLP) approach for massive connectivity in the downlink of multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems, with only local channel state information (CSI) used at each processor unit and limited information exchange between processor units. By reformulating the power minimization (PM) SLP problem and exploiting the separability of the corresponding reformulation, the original problem is decomposed into several parallel subproblems via the ADMM framework with closed-form solutions, leading to a substantial reduction in computational complexity. The sufficient condition for guaranteeing the convergence of the proposed approach is derived, based on which an adaptive parameter tuning strategy is proposed to accelerate the convergence rate. To avoid the large-dimension matrix inverse operation, an efficient algorithm is proposed by employing the standard proximal term and by leveraging the singular value decomposition (SVD). Furthermore, a prox-linear proximal term is adopted to fully eliminate the matrix inversion, and a parallel inverse-free SLP (PIF-SLP) algorithm is finally obtained. Numerical results validate our derivations above, and demonstrate that the proposed PIF-SLP algorithm can significantly reduce the computational complexity compared to the state-of-the-arts.

Integrated Sensing and Communication with mmWave Massive MIMO: A Compressed Sampling Perspective

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has opened up numerous game-changing opportunities for realizing future wireless systems. In this paper, we propose an ISAC processing framework relying on millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Specifically, we provide a compressed sampling (CS) perspective to facilitate ISAC processing, which can not only recover the high-dimensional channel state information or/and radar imaging information, but also significantly reduce pilot overhead. First, an energy-efficient widely spaced array (WSA) architecture is tailored for the radar receiver, which enhances the angular resolution of radar sensing at the cost of angular ambiguity. Then, we propose an ISAC frame structure for time-varying ISAC systems considering different timescales. The pilot waveforms are judiciously designed by taking into account both CS theories and hardware constraints induced by hybrid beamforming (HBF) architecture. Next, we design the dedicated dictionary for WSA that serves as a building block for formulating the ISAC processing as sparse signal recovery problems. The orthogonal matching pursuit with support refinement (OMP-SR) algorithm is proposed to effectively solve the problems in the existence of the angular ambiguity. We also provide a framework for estimating the Doppler frequencies during payload data transmission to guarantee communication performances. Simulation results demonstrate the good performances of both communications and radar sensing under the proposed ISAC framework.

Energy-Efficient Trajectory Design of a Multi-IRS Assisted Portable Access Point

In this work, we propose a framework for energy-efficient trajectory design of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based portable access point (PAP) deployed to serve a set of ground nodes (GNs). In addition to the PAP and GNs, the system consists of a set of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) mounted on man-made structures to increase the number of bits transmitted per Joule of energy consumed measured as the global energy efficiency (GEE). The GEE trajectory for the PAP is designed by considering the UAV propulsion energy consumption and the Peukert effect of the PAP battery, which represents an accurate battery discharge profile as a non-linear function of the UAV power consumption profile. The GEE trajectory design problem is solved in two phases: in the first, a path for the PAP and feasible positions for the IRS modules are found using a multi-tier circle packing method, and the required IRS phase shift values are calculated using an alternate optimization method that considers the interdependence between the amplitude and phase responses of an IRS element; in the second phase, the PAP flying velocity and user scheduling are calculated using a novel multilap trajectory design algorithm. Numerical evaluations show that: neglecting the Peukert effect overestimates the available flight time of the PAP; after a certain threshold, increasing the battery size reduces the available flight time of the PAP; the presence of IRS modules improves the GEE of the system compared to other baseline scenarios; the multi-lap trajectory saves more energy compared to a single-lap trajectory developed using a combination of sequential convex programming and Dinkelbach algorithm.

ISAC from the Sky: UAV Trajectory Design for Joint Communication and Target Localization

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial base stations (BSs) are able to provide not only the communication service to ground users, but also the sensing functionality to localize targets of interests. In this paper, we consider an airborne integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system where a UAV, which acts both as a communication BS and a mono-static radar, flies over a given area to transmit downlink signal to a ground communication user. In the meantime, the same transmitted signal is also exploited for mono-static radar sensing. We aim to optimize the UAV trajectory, such that the performance for both communication and sensing (C$\&$S) is explicitly considered. In particular, we first formulate the trajectory design problem into a weighted optimization problem, where a flexible performance trade-off between C$\&$S is achieved. As a step forward, a multi-stage trajectory design approach is proposed to improve the target estimation accuracy. While the resultant optimization problem is difficult to solve directly, we develop an iterative algorithm to obtain a locally optimal solution. Finally, numerical results show that the target estimation error obtained by the trade-off approach is about an order of magnitude better than a communication-only approach with a slight decrease on communication performance.

Energy Efficient Dual-Functional Radar-Communication: Rate-Splitting Multiple Access, Low-Resolution DACs, and RF Chain Selection

Dual-Functional Radar-Communication systems enhance the benefits of communications and radar sensing by jointly implementing these on the same hardware platform and using the common RF resources. An important and latest concern to be addressed in designing such Dual-Functional Radar-Communication systems is maximizing the energy-efficiency. In this paper, we consider a Dual-Functional Radar-Communication system performing simultaneous multi-user communications and radar sensing, and investigate the energy-efficiency behaviour with respect to active transmission elements. Specifically, we formulate a problem to find the optimal precoders and the number of active RF chains for maximum energy-efficiency by taking into consideration the power consumption of low-resolution Digital-to-Analog Converters on each RF chain under communications and radar performance constraints. We consider Rate-Splitting Multiple Access to perform multi-user communications with perfect and imperfect Channel State Information at Transmitter. The formulated non-convex optimization problem is solved by means of a novel algorithm. We demonstrate by numerical results that Rate Splitting Multiple Access achieves an improved energy-efficiency by employing a smaller number of RF chains compared to Space Division Multiple Access, owing to its generalized structure and improved interference management capabilities.

Vehicular Connectivity on Complex Trajectories: Roadway-Geometry Aware ISAC Beam-tracking

In this paper, we propose sensing-assisted beamforming designs for vehicles on arbitrarily shaped roads by relying on integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) signalling.Specifically, we aim to address the limitations of conventional ISAC beam-tracking schemes that do not apply to complex road geometries. To improve the tracking accuracy and communication quality of service (QoS) in vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) networks, it is essential to model the complicated roadway geometry. To that end, we impose the curvilinear coordinate system (CCS) in an interacting multiple model extended Kalman filter (IMM-EKF) framework. By doing so, both the position and the motion of the vehicle on a complicated road can be explicitly modeled and precisely tracked attributing to the benefits from the CCS. Furthermore, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the array gain through dynamically adjusting the array size and thereby controlling the beamwidth, which takes the performance loss caused by beam misalignment into account.Numerical simulations demonstrate that the roadway geometry-aware ISAC beamforming approach outperforms the communication-only based and ISAC kinematic-only based technique in the tracking performance. Moreover, the effectiveness of the dynamic beamwidth design is also verified by our numerical results.

Practical Interference Exploitation Precoding without Symbol-by-Symbol Optimization: A Block-Level Approach

In this paper, we propose a constructive interference (CI)-based block-level precoding (CI-BLP) approach for the downlink of a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system. Contrary to existing CI precoding approaches which have to be designed on a symbol-by-symbol level, here a constant precoding matrix is applied to a block of symbol slots within a channel coherence interval, thus significantly reducing the computational costs over traditional CI-based symbol-level precoding (CI-SLP) as the CI-BLP optimization problem only needs to be solved once per block. For both PSK and QAM modulation, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the minimum CI effect over the block subject to a block- rather than symbol-level power budget. We mathematically derive the optimal precoding matrix for CI-BLP as a function of the Lagrange multipliers in closed form. By formulating the dual problem, the original CI-BLP optimization problem is further shown to be equivalent to a quadratic programming (QP) optimization. Numerical results validate our derivations, and show that the proposed CI-BLP scheme achieves improved performance over the traditional CI-SLP method, thanks to the relaxed power constraint over the considered block of symbol slots.

Block-Level Interference Exploitation Precoding without Symbol-by-Symbol Optimization

Symbol-level precoding (SLP) based on the concept of constructive interference (CI) is shown to be superior to traditional block-level precoding (BLP), however at the cost of a symbol-by-symbol optimization during the precoding design. In this paper, we propose a CI-based block-level precoding (CI-BLP) scheme for the downlink transmission of a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system, where we design a constant precoding matrix to a block of symbol slots to exploit CI for each symbol slot simultaneously. A single optimization problem is formulated to maximize the minimum CI effect over the entire block, thus reducing the computational cost of traditional SLP as the optimization problem only needs to be solved once per block. By leveraging the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions and the dual problem formulation, the original optimization problem is finally shown to be equivalent to a quadratic programming (QP) over a simplex. Numerical results validate our derivations and exhibit superior performance for the proposed CI-BLP scheme over traditional BLP and SLP methods, thanks to the relaxed block-level power constraint.

An Experimental Proof of Concept for Integrated Sensing and Communications Waveform Design

The integration of sensing and communication (ISAC) functionalities have recently gained significant research interest as a hardware-, power-, spectrum- and cost- efficient solution. This experimental work focuses on a dual-functional radar sensing and communication framework where a single radiation waveform, either omnidirectional or directional, can realize both radar sensing and communication functions. We study a trade-off approach that can balance the performance of communications and radar sensing. We design an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based multi-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) software-defined radio (SDR) testbed to validate the dual-functional model. We carry out over-the-air experiments to investigate the optimal trade-off factor to balance the performance for both functions. On the radar performance, we measure the output beampatterns of our transmission to examine their similarity to simulation based beampatterns. On the communication side, we obtain bit error rate (BER) results from the testbed to show the communication performance using the dual-functional waveform. Our experiment reveals that the dual-functional approach can achieve comparable BER performance with pure communication-based solutions while maintaining fine radar beampatterns simultaneously.

A Memory-Efficient Learning Framework for SymbolLevel Precoding with Quantized NN Weights

This paper proposes a memory-efficient deep neural network (DNN) framework-based symbol level precoding (SLP). We focus on a DNN with realistic finite precision weights and adopt an unsupervised deep learning (DL) based SLP model (SLP-DNet). We apply a stochastic quantization (SQ) technique to obtain its corresponding quantized version called SLP-SQDNet. The proposed scheme offers a scalable performance vs memory tradeoff, by quantizing a scale-able percentage of the DNN weights, and we explore binary and ternary quantizations. Our results show that while SLP-DNet provides near-optimal performance, its quantized versions through SQ yield 3.46x and 2.64x model compression for binary-based and ternary-based SLP-SQDNets, respectively. We also find that our proposals offer 20x and 10x computational complexity reductions compared to SLP optimization-based and SLP-DNet, respectively.

Integrated Sensing and Communications for V2I Networks: Dynamic Predictive Beamforming for Extended Vehicle Targets

We investigate sensing-assisted predictive beamforming schemes for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication by exploiting the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) functionalities at the roadside unit (RSU). The RSU deploys a massive multi-input-multi-output (mMIMO) array and operates at millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies. The pencil-sharp mMIMO beams and fine range resolution achieved at mmWave, implicates that the point target assumption is impractical in such V2I networks, as the volume and shape of the vehicles become essential for beamforming. Simply pointing a beam to the vehicle may result in the communication receiver (CR) never lying in the beam, even when the vehicle's trajectory is accurately tracked. To tackle this problem, we consider the extended vehicle target with two novel beam tracking schemes. For the first scheme, the beamwidth is adjusted in real-time to cover the entire vehicle, followed by an extended Kalman filtering (EKF) algorithm to predict and track the position of CR according to the resolved high-resolution scatterers. An upgraded scheme is further proposed by splitting each transmission block into two stages. The first stage is exploited for ISAC transmission, where a wide beam is adopted for both communication and sensing. Based on the sensed results at the first stage, the second stage is dedicated to communication by adopting a pencil-sharp beam, yielding a significant improvement of the achievable rate. We further reveal the inherent tradeoff between the two stages in terms of their durations, and develop an optimal time allocation strategy that maximizes the average achievable rate. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the superiorities of proposed schemes over the state-of-the-art methods.

Pre-scaling and Codebook Design for Joint Radar and Communication Based on Index Modulation

This paper develops an efficient index modulation (IM) approach for the joint radar-communication (JRC) system based on a multi-carrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. The communication information is embedded into the transmitted radar pulses by selecting the corresponding indices of the carrier frequencies and antenna allocations, providing two degrees of freedom. Our contribution involves the development of a novel codebook based minimum Euclidean distance (MED) maximization and a constellation randomization pre-scaling (CRPS) scheme for efficient IM-JRC transmission. It can be inferred that the IM approach integrating the CRPS scheme followed by the codebook design maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio gain. The numerical results support the effectiveness of the proposed approach and show enhanced bit error rate performance when compared to the existing baseline.

Learning-Based Symbol Level Precoding: A Memory-Efficient Unsupervised Learning Approach

Symbol level precoding (SLP) has been proven to be an effective means of managing the interference in a multiuser downlink transmission and also enhancing the received signal power. This paper proposes an unsupervised learning based SLP that applies to quantized deep neural networks (DNNs). Rather than simply training a DNN in a supervised mode, our proposal unfolds a power minimization SLP formulation in an imperfect channel scenario using the interior point method (IPM) proximal `log' barrier function. We use binary and ternary quantizations to compress the DNN's weight values. The results show significant memory savings for our proposals compared to the existing full-precision SLP-DNet with significant model compression of ~21x and ~13x for both binary DNN-based SLP (RSLP-BDNet) and ternary DNN-based SLP (RSLP-TDNets), respectively.

An Unsupervised Deep Unfolding Framework for robust Symbol Level Precoding

Symbol Level Precoding (SLP) has attracted significant research interest due to its ability to exploit interference for energy-efficient transmission. This paper proposes an unsupervised deep-neural network (DNN) based SLP framework. Instead of naively training a DNN architecture for SLP without considering the specifics of the optimization objective of the SLP domain, our proposal unfolds a power minimization SLP formulation based on the interior point method (IPM) proximal `log' barrier function. Furthermore, we extend our proposal to a robust precoding design under channel state information (CSI) uncertainty. The results show that our proposed learning framework provides near-optimal performance while reducing the computational cost from O(n7.5) to O(n3) for the symmetrical system case where n = number of transmit antennas = number of users. This significant complexity reduction is also reflected in a proportional decrease in the proposed approach's execution time compared to the SLP optimization-based solution.

An Unsupervised Learning-Based Approach for Symbol-Level-Precoding

This paper proposes an unsupervised learning-based precoding framework that trains deep neural networks (DNNs) with no target labels by unfolding an interior point method (IPM) proximal `log' barrier function. The proximal `log' barrier function is derived from the strict power minimization formulation subject to signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint. The proposed scheme exploits the known interference via symbol-level precoding (SLP) to minimize the transmit power and is named strict Symbol-Level-Precoding deep network (SLP-SDNet). The results show that SLP-SDNet outperforms the conventional block-level-precoding (Conventional BLP) scheme while achieving near-optimal performance faster than the SLP optimization-based approach.

MIMO-OFDM Dual-Functional Radar-Communication Systems: Low-PAPR Waveform Design

In this paper, we explore a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system for achieving integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). The technique of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is leveraged to overcome the frequency-selective fading of the wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with one multi-antenna DFRC base station (BS) and multiple single-antenna user equipment (UEs). In order to restrain the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signals, we aim to jointly design low-PAPR DFRC MIMO-OFDM waveforms. This is done by utilizing a weighted objective function on both communication and radar performance metrics under power and PAPR constraints. The formulated optimization problems can be equivalently transformed into standard semi-definite programming (SDP) and can be effectively solved by semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method, where we prove that globally optimal rank-1 solution can be obtained in general. We further develop a low-complexity method to solve the problems with much reduced overheads. Moreover, the practical scenario with oversampling on OFDM signals is further considered, which has a significant effect on the resulting PAPR levels. The feasibility, effectiveness, and flexibility of the proposed low- PAPR DFRC MIMO-OFDM waveform design methods are demonstrated by a range of simulations on communication sum rate, symbol error rate as well as radar beampattern and detection probability.
