The Flavor Group Delta(6n^2)

Many non-Abelian finite subgroups of SU (3) have been used to explain the flavor structure of the Standard Model. In order to systematize and classify successful models, a detailed knowledge of their mathematical structure is necessary. In this paper we shall therefore look closely at the series of finite non-Abelian groups known as Delta(6n^2), its smallest members being S3 (n = 1) and S4 (n = 2). For arbitrary n, we determine the conjugacy classes, the irreducible representations, the Kronecker products as well as the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients.

Anomaly Conditions for Non-Abelian Finite Family Symmetries

Assuming that finite family symmetries are gauged, we derive discrete anomaly conditions for various non-Abelian groups. We thus provide new constraints for flavor model building, in which discrete non-Abelian symmetries are employed to explain the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern in the lepton sector.

Discrete gauge symmetries and proton stability in the U(1)'-extended MSSM

The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with conserved R-parity suffers from several fine-tuning problems, e.g. the mu-problem and the problem of proton decay through higher dimension operators. Both of these problems can be avoided by replacing R-parity with a non-anomalous U(1)' gauge symmetry which is broken at the TeV scale. The new gauge symmetry does not necessarily forbid all renormalizable R-parity violating interactions among the MSSM fields, and may allow for either lepton number or baryon number violation at the renormalizable level. However, the proton decay problem resurfaces with the introduction of new TeV-scale exotic fields which are required for gauge anomaly cancellations. In this paper we investigate the issue of proton stability in the presence of TeV-scale exotics. We show that there are large classes of models in which TeV exotics do not destabilize the proton. We classify the viable models according to the residual discrete symmetries after U(1)' and electroweak symmetry breaking. In some of our examples the residual U(1)' discrete gauge symmetry within the MSSM sector alone ensures that the proton is absolutely stable, for any exotic representations. In other cases the proton can be sufficiently long-lived, depending on the U(1)' and hypercharge discrete charge assignments for the exotic fields. Our analysis outlines a general scheme for ensuring proton stability in the presence of light exotics with baryon and lepton number violating interactions.

Quintics with Finite Simple Symmetries

We construct all quintic invariants in five variables with simple Non-Abelian finite symmetry groups. These define Calabi-Yau three-folds which are left invariant by the action of A_5, A_6 or PSL_2(11).

Simple Finite Non-Abelian Flavor Groups

The recently measured unexpected neutrino mixing patterns have caused a resurgence of interest in the study of finite flavor groups with two- and three-dimensional irreducible representations. This paper details the mathematics of the two finite simple groups with such representations, the Icosahedral group A_5, a subgroup of SO(3), and PSL_2(7), a subgroup of SU(3).

Proton Hexality from an Anomalous Flavor U(1) and Neutrino Masses - Linking to the String Scale

We devise minimalistic gauged U(1)_X Froggatt-Nielsen models which at low-energy give rise to the recently suggested discrete gauge Z_6 symmetry, proton hexality, thus stabilizing the proton. Assuming three generations of right-handed neutrinos, with the proper choice of X-charges, we obtain viable neutrino masses. Furthermore, we find scenarios such that no X-charged hidden sector superfields are needed, which from a bottom-up perspective allows the calculation of g_string, g_X and G_SM's Kac-Moody levels. The only mass scale apart from M_grav is m_soft.

Tri-Bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and the Family Symmetry Z_7 x Z_3

The Non-Abelian finite group PSL_2(7) is the only simple subgroup of SU(3) with a complex three-dimensional irreducible representation. It has two maximal subgroups, S_4 which, along with its own A_4 subgroup, has been successfully applied in numerous models of flavor, as well as the 21 element Frobenius group Z_7 x Z_3, which has gained much less attention. We show that it can also be used to generate tri-bimaximal mixing in the neutrino sector, while allowing for quark and charged lepton hierarchies.

Baryon Triality and Neutrino Masses from an Anomalous Flavor U(1)

We construct a concise U(1)_X Froggatt-Nielsen model in which baryon triality, a discrete gauge Z_3 symmetry, arises from U(1)_X breaking. The proton is thus stable, however, R-parity is violated. With the proper choice of U(1)_X charges we can obtain neutrino masses and mixings consistent with an explanation of the atmospheric and solar neutrino anomalies in terms of neutrino oscillations, with no right-handed neutrinos required. The only mass scale apart from M_grav is m_3/2 ~ m_soft.

The Flavor Group Delta(3n^2)

The large neutrino mixing angles have generated interest in finite subgroups of SU(3), as clues towards understanding the flavor structure of the Standard Model. In this work, we study the mathematical structure of the simplest non-Abelian subgroup, Delta(3n^2). Using simple mathematical techniques, we derive its conjugacy classes, character table, build its irreducible representations, their Kronecker products, and its invariants.

What is the Discrete Gauge Symmetry of the MSSM?

We systematically study the extension of the Supersymmetric Standard Model (SSM) by an anomaly-free discrete gauge symmetry Z_N. We extend the work of Ibanez and Ross with N=2,3 to arbitrary values of N. As new fundamental symmetries, we find four Z_6, nine Z_9 and nine Z_18. We then place three phenomenological demands upon the low-energy effective SSM: (i) the presence of the mu-term in the superpotential, (ii) baryon-number conservation upto dimension-five operators, and (iii) the presence of the see-saw neutrino mass term LHLH. We are then left with only two anomaly-free discrete gauge symmetries: baryon-triality, B_3, and a new Z_6, which we call proton-hexality, P_6. Unlike B_3, P_6 prohibits the dimension-four lepton-number violating operators. This we propose as the discrete gauge symmetry of the Minimal SSM, instead of R-parity.
