Learning Concepts, Not Tokens: Self-Supervised Semantic Alignment for Language Models

The next-token prediction (NTP) objective trains language models to predict a single token at each step, even though many continuations can express the same meaning. For example, in the sentence ``this sticker can be placed here'', positioned, attached, or put are all plausible alternatives. While standard NTP training treats these alternatives as mutually exclusive targets, we explore a self-supervised framework that encourages models to predict concepts, approximated as sets of semantically equivalent tokens. Models trained with this concept supervision align better with human similarity judgments, improve classification, clustering, and reranking performance, and achieve comparable or stronger downstream reasoning. These gains come with lower perplexity on semantically meaningful words (Section 3.2) and only minimal increases in global perplexity, suggesting that concepts enhance semantic alignment while preserving language modeling quality. MLIP Arena: Advancing Fairness and Transparency in Machine Learning Interatomic Potentials via an Open, Accessible Benchmark Platform

Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have revolutionized molecular and materials modeling, but existing benchmarks suffer from data leakage, limited transferability, and an over-reliance on error-based metrics tied to specific density functional theory (DFT) references. We introduce MLIP Arena, a benchmark platform that evaluates force field performance based on physics awareness, chemical reactivity, stability under extreme conditions, and predictive capabilities for thermodynamic properties and physical phenomena. By moving beyond static DFT references and revealing the important failure modes of current foundation MLIPs in real-world settings, MLIP Arena provides a reproducible framework to guide the next-generation MLIP development toward improved predictive accuracy and runtime efficiency while maintaining physical consistency. The Python package and online leaderboard are available at https://github.com/atomind-ai/mlip-arena.

Towards EMG-to-Speech with a Necklace Form Factor

Electrodes for decoding speech from electromyography (EMG) are typically placed on the face, requiring adhesives that are inconvenient and skin-irritating if used regularly. We explore a different device form factor, where dry electrodes are placed around the neck instead. 11-word, multi-speaker voiced EMG classifiers trained on data recorded with this device achieve 92.7% accuracy. Ablation studies reveal the importance of having more than two electrodes on the neck, and phonological analyses reveal similar classification confusions between neck-only and neck-and-face form factors. Finally, speech-EMG correlation experiments demonstrate a linear relationship between many EMG spectrogram frequency bins and self-supervised speech representation dimensions.
