On local energy decay for solutions to the b-family of peakon equations

This work is concerned with the long time behavior of solutions to the $b$-family of peakon equations. We prove local energy decay of global solutions under suitable hypotheses. Assuming the global bound of the $H^1(\mathbb R)$ norm, we show local energy decay along sequences of time in an expanding region around the origin. If we assume nonnegativity for an initial momentum, $m_0(x) = (u - \partial_x^2 u)(0,x)$, we show strict decay on a similar region. Moreover, we show decay in an exterior region given the same nonnegativity condition.

On special properties of solutions to Camassa-Holm equation and related models

We study unique continuation properties of solutions to the b-family of equations. This includes the Camassa-Holm and the Degasperi-Procesi models. We prove that for both, the initial value problem and the periodic boundary value problem, the unique continuation results found in \cite{LiPo} are optimal. More precisely, the result established there for the constant $c_0=0$ fails for any constant $c_0\neq 0$.

On Special Properties of Solutions to the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony Equation

This work is concerned with the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation. This model was deduced as an approximation to the Korteweg-de Vries equation in the description of unidirectional propagation of long waves. Our goal here is to study unique continuation and regularity properties on solutions to the associated initial value problem and initial periodic boundary value problems.

Bayesian Model Calibration and Sensitivity Analysis for Oscillating Biological Experiments

Understanding the oscillating behaviors that govern organisms' internal biological processes requires interdisciplinary efforts combining both biological and computer experiments, as the latter can complement the former by simulating perturbed conditions with higher resolution. Harmonizing the two types of experiment, however, poses significant statistical challenges due to identifiability issues, numerical instability, and ill behavior in high dimension. This article devises a new Bayesian calibration framework for oscillating biochemical models. The proposed Bayesian model is estimated relying on an advanced Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique which can efficiently infer the parameter values that match the simulated and observed oscillatory processes. Also proposed is an approach to sensitivity analysis based on the intervention posterior. This approach measures the influence of individual parameters on the target process by using the obtained MCMC samples as a computational tool. The proposed framework is illustrated with circadian oscillations observed in a filamentous fungus, Neurospora crassa.
