Learning from What You Retrieve: Online RL Fine-Tuning for Semantic Retrieval

In large-scale e-commerce retrieval, dual-encoder retrievers are op- timized for contrastive similarity, whereas downstream rerankers capture finer-grained relevance preferences; this objective mis- match limits end-to-end retrieval quality. Reinforcement Learning offers a way to use reward-model feedback for retriever adaptation, but we observe that standard policy-gradient updates can degrade embedding geometry, especially when the document index must remain frozen due to industrial constraints. To address this, we propose PAO (Positive-Advantage-Only), a selective RL optimization method. Our analysis reveals that in- discriminate penalization of negative samples (pushing away) in a frozen high-dimensional space disrupts pre-trained semantic man- ifolds. PAO selectively applies gradient updates only to retrieved items with positive advantages, effectively pulling query embed- dings toward high-reward regions while preserving global topo- logical stability. Experiments on both a massive industrial dataset and public benchmarks demonstrate that PAO significantly outper- forms standard RL and distillation baselines.

Hybrid Bit and Semantic Communications for UAV-Enabled Wireless Power Transfer Networks: A Decision-Assisted Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

Semantic communications which can significantly reduce spectrum consumption in wireless networks, have recently become a popular research area. When combined with wireless power transfer (WPT), semantic communications can help achieve high spectral efficiency for energy-limited devices in wireless communications. In energy-constrained and link budget-limited scenarios such as UAV networks, the integration of semantic communications and WPT enables highly energyefficient transmission mechanisms. In this paper, we investigate semantic communications in UAV-enabled WPT networks. To achieve adaptability to varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and task requirements, we introduce a multi-layer hybrid bit and semantic communication framework. We adopt a semantic communication efficiency metric and aim to maximize it by jointly optimizing UAV trajectory, energy harvesting base station (EHBS) selection, user association, semantic mode selection, and energy harvesting time allocation. To address this complex longterm optimization problem, we introduce the distributional soft actor-critic (DSAC) algorithm and introduce a decision assistant to further enhance the convergence performance of DSAC. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and framework and demonstrate that our algorithm can achieve superior long-term optimization performance in dynamic network environments.

Deep Mixture of Experts Network for Resource Optimization in Aerial-Terrestrial CF-mMIMO Systems under URLLC

As a critical component of sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) is expected to support real-time and reliable information exchange in low-altitude environments. However, achieving URLLC often incurs significant resource overhead, including increased bandwidth consumption, higher transmit power, and denser access point (AP) deployment, which pose significant challenges to both spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Besides, existing iterative optimization algorithms are computationally intensive and struggle to meet the latency requirements of URLLC. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid aerial-terrestrial cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) network to support diverse services, along with a channel prediction network and a deep mixture of experts (MoE) network for uplink optimization. First, we design a channel prediction network (CP-Net) to mitigate channel aging caused by high-mobility user equipment (UE). CP-Net employs three Transformer-based sub-networks for aged channel state information (CSI) prediction, while a channel quality-aware loss function is introduced to improve the prediction accuracy of weak links. Based on the predicted CSI, we develop a deep MoE network (MoE-Net) for power allocation comprising three expert models targeting different objectives. Then, we introduce a weighted gating network (WT-Net) to learn an efficient adaptive combination of expert outputs. The proposed framework better captures heterogeneous UE requirements and improves communication performance under URLLC constraints. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Major Geomagnetic Storm in 2024 October Linked to Sympathetic CME--Prominence Eruptions

Improving predictions of the geomagnetic impact of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) requires understanding how solar source properties relate to in-situ measurements at Earth. However, major geomagnetic storms frequently arise from interacting CMEs, complicating the link back to their solar origins. We analyze a CME interaction event that caused a major geomagnetic storm in 2024 October 10-11 (D$_{st}$ $\sim$-333 nT). Multiviewpoint observations reveal that the storm was related to a sympathetic eruption involving a quiescent filament and an active-region CME. The coronagraph on board the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory clearly shows that this sympathetic eruption resulted in two distinct CMEs. Due to the overlap of the CMEs in the coronagraph field of view (FOV), a spheroid shock model was used to fit the observed shock. Kinematic analysis indicates that the interacting CMEs had completed their impulsive acceleration phase before entering the coronagraph FOV, with a slow deceleration continuing beyond 100 R$_\odot$. In-situ measurements indicate that the enhanced southward magnetic fields, arising from compression during CME interactions, were the primary driver of the storm. Compared to photospheric fields, the in-situ magnetic fields suggest that the trailing CME maintained flux-rope-like signatures consistent with the source region. In contrast, the compressed leading CME displayed varying magnetic configurations between Wind and STEREO-A, featuring distorted flux-rope signatures and inconsistent inferred axis orientations. Our study bridges solar source dynamics to in-situ multipoint measurements, providing key insights for space weather prediction. Nevertheless, the direct linkage between source-region magnetic field configurations and these measurements remains tentative and requires further investigation.

Semantic Transmission Framework in Direct Satellite Communications

Insufficient link budget has become a bottleneck problem for direct access in current satellite communications. In this paper, we develop a semantic transmission framework for direct satellite communications as an effective and viable solution to tackle this problem. To measure the tradeoffs between communication, computation, and generation quality, we introduce a semantic efficiency metric with optimized weights. The optimization aims to maximize the average semantic efficiency metric by jointly optimizing transmission mode selection, satellite-user association, ISL task migration, denoising steps, and adaptive weights, which is a complex nonlinear integer programming problem. To maximize the average semantic efficiency metric, we propose a decision-assisted REINFORCE++ algorithm that utilizes feasibility-aware action space and a critic-free stabilized policy update. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher semantic efficiency than baselines.

Flexible Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Covert Communications in UAV Networks

In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a key role in wireless communication networks due to their flexibility and dynamic adaptability. However, the openness of UAV-based communications leads to security and privacy concerns in wireless transmissions. This paper investigates a framework of UAV covert communications which introduces flexible reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (F-RIS) in UAV networks. Unlike traditional RIS, F-RIS provides advanced deployment flexibility by conforming to curved surfaces and dynamically reconfiguring its electromagnetic properties to enhance the covert communication performance. We establish an electromagnetic model for F-RIS and further develop a fitted model that describes the relationship between F-RIS reflection amplitude, reflection phase, and incident angle. To maximize the covert transmission rate among UAVs while meeting the covert constraint and public transmission constraint, we introduce a strategy of jointly optimizing UAV trajectories, F-RIS reflection vectors, F-RIS incident angles, and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) power allocation. Considering this is a complicated non-convex optimization problem, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm-based optimization solution. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed framework and optimization method significantly outperform traditional benchmarks, and highlight the advantages of F-RIS in enhancing covert communication performance within UAV networks.

As satellite communications play an increasingly important role in future wireless networks, the issue of limited link budget in satellite systems has attracted significant attention in current research. Although semantic communications emerge as a promising solution to address these constraints, it introduces the challenge of increased computational resource consumption in wireless communications. To address these challenges, we propose a multi-layer hybrid bit and generative semantic communication framework which can adapt to the dynamic satellite communication networks. Furthermore, to balance the semantic communication efficiency and performance in satellite-to-ground transmissions, we introduce a novel semantic communication efficiency metric (SEM) that evaluates the trade-offs among latency, computational consumption, and semantic reconstruction quality in the proposed framework. Moreover, we utilize a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm group relative policy optimization (GRPO) to optimize the resource allocation in the proposed network. Simulation results demonstrate the flexibility of our proposed transmission framework and the effectiveness of the proposed metric SEM, illustrate the relationships among various semantic communication metrics.

QoE Optimization for Semantic Self-Correcting Video Transmission in Multi-UAV Networks

Real-time unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) video streaming is essential for time-sensitive applications, including remote surveillance, emergency response, and environmental monitoring. However, it faces challenges such as limited bandwidth, latency fluctuations, and high packet loss. To address these issues, we propose a novel semantic self-correcting video transmission framework with ultra-fine bitrate granularity (SSCV-G). In SSCV-G, video frames are encoded into a compact semantic codebook space, and the transmitter adaptively sends a subset of semantic indices based on bandwidth availability, enabling fine-grained bitrate control for improved bandwidth efficiency. At the receiver, a spatio-temporal vision transformer (ST-ViT) performs multi-frame joint decoding to reconstruct dropped semantic indices by modeling intra- and inter-frame dependencies. To further improve performance under dynamic network conditions, we integrate a multi-user proximal policy optimization (MUPPO) reinforcement learning scheme that jointly optimizes communication resource allocation and semantic bitrate selection to maximize user Quality of Experience (QoE). Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed SSCV-G significantly outperforms state-of-the-art video codecs in coding efficiency, bandwidth adaptability, and packet loss robustness. Moreover, the proposed MUPPO-based QoE optimization consistently surpasses existing benchmarks.

Link Priority Buffer-Aided Relay Selection with Energy Storage from Energy Harvest

This paper proposes a novel relay selection scheme for buffer-aided wireless networks with relays equipped with both data buffers and energy storage. While buffer-aided relay networks have demonstrated significantly improved performance, energy harvesting has become an attractive solution in many wireless systems, garnering considerable attention when applied to buffer-aided relay networks. It is known that state-dependent selection rules must be used to achieve full diversity order in buffer-aided relay networks, requiring link priorities for data transmission to be set based on system states. This task becomes challenging when both data buffers and energy storage are involved. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for setting link priorities, which forms the basis for a new selection rule. The outage probability of the proposed selection scheme is derived. The simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed algorithm which achieves full diversity in buffer-aided relay selection with energy storage, and consistently outperforms baseline approaches across various metrics.

Widely Linear Augmented Extreme Learning Machine Based Impairments Compensation for Satellite Communications

Satellite communications are crucial for the evolution beyond fifth-generation networks. However, the dynamic nature of satellite channels and their inherent impairments present significant challenges. In this paper, a novel post-compensation scheme that combines the complex-valued extreme learning machine with augmented hidden layer (CELMAH) architecture and widely linear processing (WLP) is developed to address these issues by exploiting signal impropriety in satellite communications. Although CELMAH shares structural similarities with WLP, it employs a different core algorithm and does not fully exploit the signal impropriety. By incorporating WLP principles, we derive a tailored formulation suited to the network structure and propose the CELM augmented by widely linear least squares (CELM-WLLS) for post-distortion. The proposed approach offers enhanced communication robustness and is highly effective for satellite communication scenarios characterized by dynamic channel conditions and non-linear impairments. CELM-WLLS is designed to improve signal recovery performance and outperform traditional methods such as least square (LS) and minimum mean square error (MMSE). Compared to CELMAH, CELM-WLLS demonstrates approximately 0.8 dB gain in BER performance, and also achieves a two-thirds reduction in computational complexity, making it a more efficient solution.

The Communication and Computation Trade-off in Wireless Semantic Communications

Semantic communications have emerged as a crucial research direction for future wireless communication networks. However, as wireless systems become increasingly complex, the demands for computation and communication resources in semantic communications continue to grow rapidly. This paper investigates the trade-off between computation and communication in wireless semantic communications, taking into consideration transmission task delay and performance constraints within the semantic communication framework. We propose a novel tradeoff metric to analyze the balance between computation and communication in semantic transmissions and employ the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to minimize this metric, thereby reducing the cost associated with balancing computation and communication. Through simulations, we analyze the tradeoff between computation and communication and demonstrate the effectiveness of optimizing this trade-off metric.

Multi-scale Energy Release Events in the Quiet Sun: A Possible Source for Coronal Heating

The coronal heating problem remains one of the most challenging questions in solar physics. The energy driving coronal heating is widely understood to be associated with convective motions below the photosphere. Recent high-resolution observations reveal that photospheric magnetic fields in the quiet Sun undergo complex and rapid evolution. These photospheric dynamics are expected to be reflected in the coronal magnetic field. Motivated by these insights, our research aims to explore the relationship between magnetic energy and coronal heating. By combining observations from Solar Orbiter and SDO with a magnetic field extrapolation technique, we estimate the magnetic free energy of multi-scale energy release events in the quiet Sun. Interestingly, our results reveal a strong correlation between the evolution of free energy and the integrated intensity of extreme ultraviolet emission at 171 \AA~in these events. We quantitatively assess the potential energy flux budget of these events to evaluate their contribution to coronal heating. Our study implies a link between photospheric magnetic field evolution and coronal temperature variations, paving the way for further research into similar phenomena.

Deep Learning-Based Traffic-Aware Base Station Sleep Mode and Cell Zooming Strategy in RIS-Aided Multi-Cell Networks

Advances in wireless technology have significantly increased the number of wireless connections, leading to higher energy consumption in networks. Among these, base stations (BSs) in radio access networks (RANs) account for over half of the total energy usage. To address this, we propose a multi-cell sleep strategy combined with adaptive cell zooming, user association, and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to minimize BS energy consumption. This approach allows BSs to enter sleep during low traffic, while adaptive cell zooming and user association dynamically adjust coverage to balance traffic load and enhance data rates through RIS, minimizing the number of active BSs. However, it is important to note that the proposed method may achieve energy-savings at the cost of increased delay, requiring a trade-off between these two factors. Moreover, minimizing BS energy consumption under the delay constraint is a complicated non-convex problem. To address this issue, we model the RIS-aided multi-cell network as a Markov decision process (MDP) and use the proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm to optimize sleep mode (SM), cell zooming, and user association. Besides, we utilize a double cascade correlation network (DCCN) algorithm to optimize the RIS reflection coefficients. Simulation results demonstrate that PPO balances energy-savings and delay, while DCCN-optimized RIS enhances BS energy-savings. Compared to systems optimised by the benchmark DQN algorithm, energy consumption is reduced by 49.61%

In this paper, we introduce a novel framework consisting of hybrid bit-level and generative semantic communications for efficient downlink image transmission within space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs). The proposed model comprises multiple low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and ground users. Considering the limitations in signal coverage and receiver antennas that make the direct communication between satellites and ground users unfeasible in many scenarios, thus UAVs serve as relays and forward images from satellites to the ground users. Our hybrid communication framework effectively combines bit-level transmission with several semantic-level image generation modes, optimizing bandwidth usage to meet stringent satellite link budget constraints and ensure communication reliability and low latency under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. To reduce the transmission delay while ensuring reconstruction quality for the ground user, we propose a novel metric to measure delay and reconstruction quality in the proposed system, and employ a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based strategy to optimize resource allocation in the proposed network. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework in terms of communication resource conservation, reduced latency, and maintaining high image quality, significantly outperforming traditional solutions. Therefore, the proposed framework can ensure that real-time image transmission requirements in SAGINs, even under dynamic network conditions and user demand.

The space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) has become a crucial research direction in future wireless communications due to its ubiquitous coverage, rapid and flexible deployment, and multi-layer cooperation capabilities. However, integrating hierarchical federated learning (HFL) with edge computing and SAGINs remains a complex open issue to be resolved. This paper proposes a novel framework for applying HFL in SAGINs, utilizing aerial platforms and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites as edge servers and cloud servers, respectively, to provide multi-layer aggregation capabilities for HFL. Moreover, we address the efficiency issue of hybrid action spaces in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) through a decoupling and recoupling approach, and design a new dynamic adjusting reward function to ensure fairness among multiple tasks in federated learning. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed algorithm, consistently outperforming baseline approaches and offering a promising solution for addressing highly complex optimization problems in SAGINs.
