Feedback Particle Filter on Matrix Lie Groups

This paper is concerned with the problem of continuous-time nonlinear filtering for stochastic processes on a connected matrix Lie group. The main contribution of this paper is to derive the feedback particle filter (FPF) algorithm for this problem. In its general form, the FPF is shown to provide a coordinate-free description of the filter that automatically satisfies the geometric constraints of the manifold. The particle dynamics are encapsulated in a Stratonovich stochastic differential equation that retains the feedback structure of the original (Euclidean) FPF. The implementation of the filter requires a solution of a Poisson equation on the Lie group, and two numerical algorithms are described for this purpose. As an example, the FPF is applied to the problem of attitude estimation - a nonlinear filtering problem on the Lie group SO(3). The formulae of the filter are described using both the rotation matrix and the quaternion coordinates. Comparisons are also provided between the FPF and some popular algorithms for attitude estimation, namely the multiplicative EKF, the unscented quaternion estimator, the left invariant EKF, and the invariant ensemble Kalman filter. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the comparisons.

Quantum capacitance anomalies of two-dimensional non-equilibrium states under microwave irradiation

We report our direct study of the compressibility on ultrahigh mobility two-dimensional electron system ($μ_{e} \sim 1 \times 10^{7}$ cm$^{2}$/Vs) in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells under microwave (MW) irradiation. The field penetration current results show that the quantum capacitance oscillates with microwave induced resistance oscillations (MIRO), however, the trend is opposite with respect to the compressibility for usual equilibrium states in previous theoretical explanations. The anomalous phenomena provide a platform for study on the non-equilibrium system under microwave, and point to the current domains and inhomogeneity induced by radiation. Moreover, the quantum capacitance indication for multi-photon process around $j = 1/2$ is detected under intensive microwave below 30 GHz.

Photovoltage Detection of Edge Magnetoplasmon Oscillations and Giant Magnetoplasmon Resonances in A Two-Dimensional Hole System

In our high mobility p-type AlGaAs/GaAs two-dimensional hole samples, we originally observe the B-periodic oscillation induced by microwave (MW) in photovoltage (PV) measurements. In the frequency range of our measurements (5 - 40 GHz), the period (ΔB) is inversely proportional to the microwave frequency (f). The distinct oscillations come from the edge magnetoplasmon (EMP) in the high quality heavy hole system. In our hole sample with a very large effective mass, the observation of the EMP oscillations is in neither the low frequency limit nor the high frequency limit, and the damping of the EMP oscillations is very weak under high magnetic fields. Simultaneously, we observe the giant plasmon resonance signals in our measurements on the shallow two-dimensional hole system (2DHS).

Question Retrieval for Community-based Question Answering via Heterogeneous Network Integration Learning

Community based question answering platforms have attracted substantial users to share knowledge and learn from each other. As the rapid enlargement of CQA platforms, quantities of overlapped questions emerge, which makes users confounded to select a proper reference. It is urgent for us to take effective automated algorithms to reuse historical questions with corresponding answers. In this paper we focus on the problem with question retrieval, which aims to match historical questions that are relevant or semantically equivalent to resolve one s query directly. The challenges in this task are the lexical gaps between questions for the word ambiguity and word mismatch problem. Furthermore, limited words in queried sentences cause sparsity of word features. To alleviate these challenges, we propose a novel framework named HNIL which encodes not only the question contents but also the askers social interactions to enhance the question embedding performance. More specifically, we apply random walk based learning method with recurrent neural network to match the similarities between askers question and historical questions proposed by other users. Extensive experiments on a large scale dataset from a real world CQA site show that employing the heterogeneous social network information outperforms the other state of the art solutions in this task.

Cross Domain Knowledge Transfer for Person Re-identification

Person Re-Identification (re-id) is a challenging task in computer vision, especially when there are limited training data from multiple camera views. In this paper, we pro- pose a deep learning based person re-identification method by transferring knowledge of mid-level attribute features and high-level classification features. Building on the idea that identity classification, attribute recognition and re- identification share the same mid-level semantic representations, they can be trained sequentially by fine-tuning one based on another. In our framework, we train identity classification and attribute recognition tasks from deep Convolutional Neural Network (dCNN) to learn person information. The information can be transferred to the person re-id task and improves its accuracy by a large margin. Further- more, a Long Short Term Memory(LSTM) based Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) component is extended by a spacial gate. This component is used in the re-id model to pay attention to certain spacial parts in each recurrent unit. Experimental results show that our method achieves 78.3% of rank-1 recognition accuracy on the CUHK03 benchmark.

A single strontium Rydberg ion confined in a Paul trap

Trapped Rydberg ions are a promising new system for quantum information processing. They have the potential to join the precise quantum operations of trapped ions and the strong, long-range interactions between Rydberg atoms. Technically, the ion trap will need to stay active while exciting the ions into the Rydberg state, else the strong Coulomb repulsion will quickly push the ions apart. Thus, a thorough understanding of the trap effects on Rydberg ions is essential for future applications. Here we report the observation of two fundamental trap effects. First, we investigate the interaction of the Rydberg electron with the quadrupolar electric trapping field. This effect leads to Floquet sidebands in the spectroscopy of Rydberg D-states whereas Rydberg S-states are unaffected due to their symmetry. Second, we report on the modified trapping potential in the Rydberg state compared to the ground state which results from the strong polarizability of the Rydberg ion. We observe the resultant energy shifts as a line broadening which can be suppressed by cooling the ion to the motional ground state in the directions orthogonal to the excitation laser.

Spin Injection and Inverse Edelstein Effect in the Surface States of Topological Kondo Insulator SmB6

There has been considerable interest in exploiting the spin degrees of freedom of electrons for potential information storage and computing technologies. Topological insulators (TI), a class of quantum materials, have special gapless edge/surface states, where the spin polarization of the Dirac fermions is locked to the momentum direction. This spin-momentum locking property gives rise to very interesting spin-dependent physical phenomena such as the Edelstein and inverse Edelstein effects. However, the spin injection in pure surface states of TI is very challenging because of the coexistence of the highly conducting bulk states. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the spin injection and observe the inverse Edelstein effect in the surface states of a topological Kondo insulator, SmB6. At low temperatures when only surface carriers are present, a clear spin signal is observed. Furthermore, the magnetic field angle dependence of the spin signal is consistent with spin-momentum locking property of surface states of SmB6.

3D Single-port Labyrinthine Acoustic Metamaterial

In this paper, we report on the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a 3D single-port labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial. By using curled perforations with one end closed and with appropriate loss inside, the proposed metamaterial can perfectly absorb airborne sounds in a low frequency band. Both the position and width of the band can be tuned flexibly. A tradeoff is uncovered between the relative absorption bandwidth and thickness of the metamaterial. When the relative absorption bandwidth is as high as 51%, the requirement of deep subwavelength thickness (0.07λ) can still be satisfied.

On weakly $sigma$-permutable subgroups of finite groups

Let G be a finite group and σ = {σ_i, i \in I} be a partition of the set of all primes \mathbb{P}. A set \mathcal{H} of subgroups of G with 1 \in \mathcal{H} is said to be a complete Hall σ-set of G if every non-identity member of \mathcal{H} is a Hall σ_i-subgroup of G. A subgroup H of G is said to be σ-permutable if G possesses a complete Hall σ-set \mathcal{H} such that HA^x = A^xH for all A \in \mathcal{H} and all x \in G. We say that a subgroup H of G is weakly σ-permutable in G if there exists a σ-subnormal subgroup T of G such that G = HT and H \cap T \leq H_σG. where H_σG is the subgroup of H generated by all those subgroups of H which are σ-permutable in G. By using this new notion, we establish some new criterias for a group G to be a σ-soluble and supersoluble, and also we give the conditions under which a normal subgroup of G is hypercyclically embedded.

Attitude Estimation with Feedback Particle Filter

This paper presents theory, application, and comparisons of the feedback particle filter (FPF) algorithm for the problem of attitude estimation. The paper builds upon our recent work on the exact FPF solution of the continuous-time nonlinear filtering problem on compact Lie groups. In this paper, the details of the FPF algorithm are presented for the problem of attitude estimation - a nonlinear filtering problem on SO(3). The quaternions are employed for computational purposes. The algorithm requires a numerical solution of the filter gain function, and two methods are applied for this purpose. Comparisons are also provided between the FPF and some popular algorithms for attitude estimation on SO(3), including the invariant EKF, the multiplicative EKF, and the unscented Kalman filter. Simulation results are presented that help illustrate the comparisons.

Input Aggregated Network for Face Video Representation

Recently, deep neural network has shown promising performance in face image recognition. The inputs of most networks are face images, and there is hardly any work reported in literature on network with face videos as input. To sufficiently discover the useful information contained in face videos, we present a novel network architecture called input aggregated network which is able to learn fixed-length representations for variable-length face videos. To accomplish this goal, an aggregation unit is designed to model a face video with various frames as a point on a Riemannian manifold, and the mapping unit aims at mapping the point into high-dimensional space where face videos belonging to the same subject are close-by and others are distant. These two units together with the frame representation unit build an end-to-end learning system which can learn representations of face videos for the specific tasks. Experiments on two public face video datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network.

Signatures of the Adler-Bell-Jackiw chiral anomaly in a Weyl Fermion semimetal

Weyl semimetals provide the realization of Weyl fermions in solid-state physics. Among all the physical phenomena that are enabled by Weyl semimetals, the chiral anomaly is the most unusual one. Here, we report signatures of the chiral anomaly in the magneto-transport measurements on the first Weyl semimetal TaAs. We show negative magnetoresistance under parallel electric and magnetic fields, that is, unlike most metals whose resistivity increases under an external magnetic field, we observe that our high mobility TaAs samples become more conductive as a magnetic field is applied along the direction of the current for certain ranges of the field strength. We present systematically detailed data and careful analyses, which allow us to exclude other possible origins of the observed negative magnetoresistance. Our transport data, corroborated by photoemission measurements, first-principles calculations and theoretical analyses, collectively demonstrate signatures of the Weyl fermion chiral anomaly in the magneto-transport of TaAs.

Effective Clipart Image Vectorization Through Direct Optimization of Bezigons

Bezigons, i.e., closed paths composed of Bézier curves, have been widely employed to describe shapes in image vectorization results. However, most existing vectorization techniques infer the bezigons by simply approximating an intermediate vector representation (such as polygons). Consequently, the resultant bezigons are sometimes imperfect due to accumulated errors, fitting ambiguities, and a lack of curve priors, especially for low-resolution images. In this paper, we describe a novel method for vectorizing clipart images. In contrast to previous methods, we directly optimize the bezigons rather than using other intermediate representations; therefore, the resultant bezigons are not only of higher fidelity compared with the original raster image but also more reasonable because they were traced by a proficient expert. To enable such optimization, we have overcome several challenges and have devised a differentiable data energy as well as several curve-based prior terms. To improve the efficiency of the optimization, we also take advantage of the local control property of bezigons and adopt an overlapped piecewise optimization strategy. The experimental results show that our method outperforms both the current state-of-the-art method and commonly used commercial software in terms of bezigon quality.

Incidental Scene Text Understanding: Recent Progresses on ICDAR 2015 Robust Reading Competition Challenge 4

Different from focused texts present in natural images, which are captured with user's intention and intervention, incidental texts usually exhibit much more diversity, variability and complexity, thus posing significant difficulties and challenges for scene text detection and recognition algorithms. The ICDAR 2015 Robust Reading Competition Challenge 4 was launched to assess the performance of existing scene text detection and recognition methods on incidental texts as well as to stimulate novel ideas and solutions. This report is dedicated to briefly introduce our strategies for this challenging problem and compare them with prior arts in this field.

TrueTop: A Sybil-Resilient System for User Influence Measurement on Twitter

Influential users have great potential for accelerating information dissemination and acquisition on Twitter. How to measure the influence of Twitter users has attracted significant academic and industrial attention. Existing influential measurement techniques, however, are vulnerable to sybil users that are thriving on Twitter. Although sybil defenses for online social networks have been extensively investigated, they commonly assume unique mappings from human-established trust relationships to online social associations and thus do not apply to Twitter where users can freely follow each other. This paper presents TrueTop, the first sybil-resilient system to measure the influence of Twitter users. TrueTop is firmly rooted in two observations from real Twitter datasets. First, although non-sybil users may incautiously follow strangers, they tend to be more careful and selective in retweeting, replying to, and mentioning other Twitter users. Second, influential users usually get much more retweets, replies, and mentions than non-influential users. Detailed theoretical studies and synthetic simulations show that TrueTop can generate very accurate influence measurement results and also have strong resilience to sybil attacks.

Feedback Particle Filter on Matrix Lie Groups

This paper is concerned with the problem of continuous-time nonlinear filtering for stochastic processes on a compact and connected matrix Lie group without boundary, e.g. SO(n) and SE(n), in the presence of real-valued observations. This problem is important to numerous applications in attitude estimation, visual tracking and robotic localization. The main contribution of this paper is to derive the feedback particle filter (FPF) algorithm for this problem. In its general form, the FPF provides a coordinate-free description of the filter that furthermore satisfies the geometric constraints of the manifold. The particle dynamics are encapsulated in a Stratonovich stochastic differential equation that preserves the feedback structure of the original Euclidean FPF. Specific examples for SO(2) and SO(3) are provided to help illustrate the filter using the phase and the quaternion coordinates, respectively.

Tracking of colloids close to contact

The precise tracking of micron sized colloidal particles - held in the vicinity of each other using optical tweezers - is an elegant way to gain information about the particle-particle pair interaction potential. The accuracy of the method, however, relies strongly on the tracking precision. Particularly the elimination of systematic errors in the position detection due to overlapping particle diffraction patterns remains a great challenge. Here we propose a template based particle finding algorithm that circumvents these problems by tracking only a fraction of the particle image that is insignificantly affected by nearby colloids. Under realistic experimental conditions we show that our algorithm significantly reduces systematic errors compared to standard tracking methods. Moreover our approach should in principle be applicable to almost arbitrary shaped particles as the template can be adapted to any geometry.

Energy-efficient population coding constrains network size of a neuronal array system

Here, we consider the open issue of how the energy efficiency of neural information transmission process in a general neuronal array constrains the network size, and how well this network size ensures the neural information being transmitted reliably in a noisy environment. By direct mathematical analysis, we have obtained general solutions proving that there exists an optimal neuronal number in the network with which the average coding energy cost (defined as energy consumption divided by mutual information) per neuron passes through a global minimum for both subthreshold and superthreshold signals. Varying with increases in background noise intensity, the optimal neuronal number decreases for subthreshold and increases for suprathreshold signals. The existence of an optimal neuronal number in an array network reveals a general rule for population coding stating that the neuronal number should be large enough to ensure reliable information transmission robust to the noisy environment but small enough to minimize energy cost.
